FA I R F I E L D — A spokesman for the VA Northern California Health Care System said there is no decision yet about whether the pharmacies at the Fairfield and Mare Island clinics will be closed. Jason Dominguez, chief of Public Affairs, also denied any rumors that the clinics would be shuttered. “There are no plans to close the Fairfield and Mare Island VA Clinics,” Dominquez wrote in an email response to the Daily Repub-
lic’s inquiries. The newspaper had been informed by multiple veterans advocates and other sources close to the clinics that the pharmacies are going to be closed. “There are ongoing discussions with our labor partners about the pharmacies at the Mare Island and Fairfield VA Clinics. However, no final decisions have been made at this time,” Dominguez wrote. Dedrick Waterford, the Veterans Experience coordinator for the See Future, Page A7

VALLEJO — The Bay Area Stage flea market has not only helped the theatrical organization survive during the Covid-19 pandemic, it has also made for some interesting experiences for BAS co-founder Stacey Loew, who operates the sale. Loew also credits the landlords from Sir Winston Financial Services telling Bay Area Stage to pay
what they can in rent. The flea market would not exist without that blessing, Loew said. “We would have had to close our doors for good,” she shared in an email to the Daily Republic. “We would have to sell off everything because storage fees would have been too great.” Sales from the flea market and patron donations have kept Bay Area Stage in good standing with all utilities, insurance and some of the rent.
“BAS has remained in good standing and debt-free, which is a tremendous relief,” Loew wrote. By remaining active and open, new people have come to discover the theater, she wrote. Loew recognizes some will not return to see performances. “Many will,” she wrote. “And that is another huge plus.” Donations have run the gamut from clothes and kitchenware to a

WASHINGTON — Republicans may be ready to support limited infrastructure spending in President Joe Biden’s spending proposal, which would require scaling back the $2.25 trillion plan by more than twothirds, a senior GOP senator said. With Biden’s Americans Jobs Plan on the table for less than a week, administration officials and Senate Republicans took to the Sunday news shows to lay out opposing positions. I’ve when I first read it, but I know never read the third book in I got it from the Camp Allen the trilogy, “Ralph S. Mouse,” Elementary School library in for a couple of reasons. First, Norfolk, Virginia. I also know it came out in 1982 when I was that I checked it out and read a senior in high school and it more than once because I had much more sophisticated remember seeing my name reading tastes (Playboy and numerous times on the little Mad magazines). For those who have never read “The Mouse and the Motorcycle,” well, shame on you. I could include a brief synopsis here, but I won’t. I mean, you can read a long one on Wikipedia, but those never do an actual story justice. It has excitement, plot twists, danger, humor and heart. To honor Clearly, I wanted to read my favorite book of hers again. I looked it up at the Solano County Library and while they did have copies of it, I didn’t want to read the ones they had. I know this is going to sound rather silly, but the reason is because they are later printings and do not have the iconic cover that I remembered and revered. The illustrations by Louis Darling in the book were fabulous and added to the engaging text, and I wanted the real shebang or nothing. But I relented and compromised on listening to the audio version through Hoopla. Now being read to – which I love – is not the same as reading yourself, but fortunately, the voice actor was fabulous and I was transported back to childhood for the two hours it took to go
on an adventure with Ralph and his human friend Keith Gridley. I found that Cleary’s writing did the exact same thing to 57-year-old me that it did to prepubescent me: played a movie in my head that was compelling, funny and well-told. One thing I didn’t remember – and she doesn’t beat you over the head with it – is that there is a moral center to the story. Keith and Ralph identify with each other when Ralph screws up and loses the motorcycle in the linen. Keith is mad, but still wants to be friends and admits that he sometimes does things without thinking them through as well. Prepubescent me can definitely fist bump that concept. Heck, middle-aged me can, too, truth be told. I loved “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” so much that when I home-schooled my daughter Kaci years ago I made her read it even though it wasn’t really her thing. I also made her watch the 1986 “ABC Afterschool Special” adaptation and then write a paper comparing and contrasting the two. For the record, the movie, which features an animatronic or weirdly
Bright, dark outlooks on making daylight saving time permanent The Washington Post Very early in the morning of March 14, time moved forward for most Americans. When they got out of bed that Sunday they had “lost” an hour because of daylight saving time (DST). This “loss” has been going on every spring in the United States since 1966. (Although it first happened in 1918 during World War I.) We “gain” an hour in November when we turn our clocks back an hour and return to “standard” time. Lots of people have strong opinions about this time-shifting. Including Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, U.S. senators from Florida. They introduced a bill with other colleagues that would prevent a return to standard time this fall. They say always being on DST will make us safer because there will be fewer car accidents. And healthier because we will be less depressed. Changing clocks back and forth gets us more daylight in the evening when it is spring and summer in the Northern Hemisphere. And more daylight in the morning when it is winter (and sooooo hard to get up for school and work). This was an energy-saving measure when we used to burn coal. But we don’t save much energy from this practice anymore. Opposite to what Rubio is asking for, some states
Jonathan Petersson/Pexels
Some experts agree that changing time can be dangerous. and territories never observed DST. Hawaii, Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation), Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands are all DST-free. In places closer to the equator, the amount of daylight is pretty much the same in summer and winter. So there is not much benefit from DST. In fact, in very hot places, some people like to have an extra hour of darkness during their waking hours! Should we stay forever in standard time, like Hawaii? Or always in DST, as Rubio wants? Some experts agree that changing time can be dangerous. It can make us more sleepdeprived. And sleepiness can lead to all kinds of bad results. Fifteen states, including Florida, have voted not to change time back and forth within their borders. But they can’t do that permanently unless the federal government changes the law to allow it. We wondered what kids thought about whether we should get rid of DST (or
standard time). F o u r t e e n -y e a r - o l d Harry Dennison from Brooklyn in New York City is against fiddling with the way things work now. “Having daylight saving is tradition, and I like tradition,” he says. Evan Juris (age 10) from Fanwood, New Jersey, also prefers to keep things as they are, but for another reason. “If we take away daylight saving then we would be walking to work and school in the dark,” he says. In the Washington, D.C., area, for example, sunrise would be after 8 a.m. for almost 2 1/2 months beginning at the end of November. For Leo Cieri, a 13-yearold from Queens in New York City, there are pros and cons to DST. “My body has a certain time when it wants to wake up (so) for me, (DST) best lines up with my sleep schedule,” he says. But on the other hand, “We often get messed up because of these time changes. It is like jet lag, just without the traveling.”

animated Ralph with a grating voice, was dreadful and the magic that Cleary spun in her book was absent. I don’t revisit the books I loved as a child that often – “Charlotte’s Web” being the exception that proves the rule – but I can see a definite through-line between “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” and books I am currently reading. Those include “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett, “His Truth is Marching On: John Lewis and the Power of Hope” by Jon Meacham and “Here Comes the Night: The Dark Soul of Bert Berns and the Dirty Business of Rhythm and Blues” by Joel Selvin. While there is seemingly no connection between any of those, it is the magical, almost telepathy, of writers capturing ideas on paper and then the reader silently decoding them that I am talking about. It is the love of reading, pure and simple. Thank you, Beverly Cleary, and rest in peace. Reach Fairfield writer Tony Wade at toeknee weighed@gmail.com.

Michael Gamino Correa, 5, plays with a toy after completing his school Zoom class with his mom Rosario Correa, 34, at home in Sacramento, March 18. The single Latina mother changed her work schedule to a night shift to help supervise her three children’s schooling during the day.
Why child care strains Latino families more than most during Covid Tribune Content Agency SACRAMENTO — After the Covid-19 pandemic forced schools across California to close, Rosario Correa took a closing shift at a fast food restaurant partly so that she could monitor her children’s in-home learning during the day. Each night, she arrives home from work at 2 a.m. Five and a half hours later, she wakes up to get her kids ready for online school. Prior to the pandemic, Correa worked as a housekeeper at a Sacramento hotel during the day while her children attended school and after-school programs. Now, more than half of her paychecks go toward paying a babysitter to watch over her three children – ages 5, 12 and 15 – while she works. “I hardly sleep,” Correa, 34, said in Spanish. “It’s been very difficult.” The pandemic has disrupted the lives and routines of millions of California parents. But child care and poverty experts say it especially strained low-income Latino workers with young children. Latinos, who are “less likely than other workers to have jobs that can be done remotely,” account for 38% of the state’s workforce, according to a Legislative Analyst’s Office report. More than 3 million children in California under age 12 are Latino, according to a California Budget & Policy Center analysis. That’s about half of the state’s population in that age group.
“Many families are forced between paying the bills and caring for the children right now, which is a horrible place that no parent should ever have to be,” said Kristin Schumacher, a senior policy analyst at the budget center. Latino workers in California account for half of the state’s essential workforce and are mostly employed in personal care, food and recreational sectors, the Legislative Analyst’s Office report says. Latinos working in the hospitality sector could have a particularly hard time finding child care, according to Kevin Ferreira van Leer, an assistant professor of child and adolescent development at California State University, Sacramento. It’s an industry known for not offering set work hours or providing schedules in advance. “Many families are used to this balancing act,” he said. That constant juggling, he said, can lead to economic consequences for Latino families, like missing a workday and pay for not showing up to work due to child care breakdowns. Latinos are also younger on average and are most likely to have children living at home than other groups. About 54% of California public school students in grades K-12 are Latino, according to a California School Boards Association analysis. See Latino, Page A8

Some students not ready to go back to school
Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — High school senior Isabell Diaz has a routine. She rolls out of bed half an hour before her 9 a.m. class at Los Angeles High School. On breaks, she steps away from the screen to eat breakfast or complete chores. She has learned how to navigate online assignments and virtual club meetings. So when she learned that her school would open in late April, she had mixed emotions. “My initial thought wasn’t ‘oh my gosh, yay.’ It was ‘OK, are we sure about this? How is this going to work?’ ” the 17-year-old said. Then fear set in – she saw how Covid-19 crept into her home in early December and knocked down her father and two sisters. When she realized she would take all her classes online while stuck in one classroom all day, she knew her answer: No. High school students have trudged through a year of isolation as their school lives morphed before their eyes. Theirs is a year of lost milestone experiences – missed proms, sports games and friendship bonds. Studies have pointed to increasing mental health problems. And yet it is high school students, more than any others, who are opting to finish the year online. In the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest in the nation, 84% are staying at home. Moderate to high numbers are also seen across other area school districts. In interviews with high school students throughout Los Angeles County, many said they have come to terms with the fact they would not return to the same campus experience they left behind. And while returning may assuage some of the isolation and difficulties of distance learning, they said it’s not worth the health risks when weighed against a vastly diminished schedule.
“We kind of have to accept what’s going on right now and try to keep everyone safe until this is all over,” Isabell said. “We’ve made it this far; we can make it another two and a half months.” To date, 20% of California high school students have an option to return to school. Complex high school schedu l ing, w it h student movement through different classes – as well as their age, which increases the risk of developing Covid – has made for slower and more cautious reopenings. In L.A. County, 25 school districts are planning to bring back at least one grade level between seventh and 12th in April, according to the L.A. County Office of Education. Three more districts plan to reopen in May. L.A. Unified high school students, who are on spring break this week, said they understand conditions are improving, but the pandemic is not over. There are still risks, they said, if they go back to school. Some worry about whether classmates will follow safety protocols, like mask-wearing and social distancing. Many of them have settled, finally, into a routine with distance learning. For LAUSD students, they say the Zoom-in-school format is not worth adapting to an entirely new schedule. Others said they can’t shake off the unpredictability of the virus – cases could spike again. Kahlila Williams, a senior, misses her school’s Black Student Union meetings. She misses her friends at the Girls Academic Leadership Academy, which shares a campus with L.A. High. But, she asked, what really is there left to salvage of her high school career in the time that remains? “For me being a senior, I personally feel

You’ll draw it today. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Aside from Stretch Armstrong and Jell-O, very few things, once moved, will revert to their original state. That’s what makes it so remarkable today when a relationship resumes as though nothing happened.

A MAJORITY OF CARDS COULD WORK WELL Who made this comment? “We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” When you are the declarer in a suit contract, it is usually a case of the bigger your trump majority, the better. Similarly, when you are on defense against a no-trump contract, normally you do best to attack the suit where your side has the most cards. You hope

by Phillip Alder to drain declarer of cards in that suit, get back in and run the remainder. In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest spade two. How should East plan the defense? With a balanced hand, count 2 points for each ace and 1 for every king. A normal two-no-trump opening contains 7 points – exactly as this South hand does. West’s lead was debatable. It was too likely that South would have the ace-queen and that a trick would be lost. But it was all right here until East, after winning the first trick, returned his second spade, following the standard practice of leading back partner’s suit in no-trump. Declarer just plugged away at spades, losing three tricks in the suit, but giving himself two spades, three hearts, one diamond and four clubs. At trick one, East should have realized that South had five spades to West’s four. It was time to try elsewhere. If East had shifted to the diamond five, declarer would have been doomed. The diamond queen would have lost to West’s king, and West would have returned the diamond 10. South could not have done better than take his eight winners. Piers Morgan to sit down with Carlson Los Angeles Times Fresh from walking off the set of “Good Morning Britain” and fueling the drama that ended with Sharon Osbourne leaving CBS’ “The Talk,” Piers Morgan is sitting down for an interview Monday with Fox News opinion host Tucker Carlson. It will be the first major interview given by the noted doubter of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, since he quit his “GMB” hosting gig amid a heated discussion about race and the royals on March 9. The bulk of the chat, which airs Monday afternoon, will appear on “Tucker Carlson Today,” a new video podcast that runs three times a week on Fox Nation, the network’s subscription streaming service. A portion of it will air
on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” which is regularly the top-rated show in cable news. Morgan will air his thoughts on the reaction to Meghan and Prince Harry’s CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey and on the current state of media. In a video Thursday pitching the paperback edition of “Wake Up,” Morgan called his newest book a “clarion call” for freedom of speech and the right to have an opinion and for the end of “this ridiculous cancel culture that is wrecking society. “Let’s go back to what made Britain great: The ability to disagree with each other and then go and have a pint in the pub – not try to wreck each other’s lives for a difference of opinion,” he said in the clip.

HR 1 not a home run
I
t is obvious that the authors of House Resolution 1 are severely lacking in the knowledge and wisdom of the Founding Fathers as discussed in Federalist Papers Nos. 59-60. The consistent basic philosophy of the Founders was that government must be as close to the people as possible and therefore all powers of government are limited to states with the exception of specifically enumerated powers. “The times, places, and manner of holding elections . . . shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature.” The Constitution, “authorizes the national legislature to regulate in the last resort,” as Hamilton stated in Federalist No. 59. The last Earl Heal resort is defined as collusionary action by state legislatures to interfere with the federal government. Federalist No. 60 defines other potential issues but judges the possibilities as insignificant. The alleged justification for HR 1, “Congress finds that it has broad authority to regulate the time, place, and manner of congressional elections under the Elections Clause of the Constitution, Article I, Section 4, Clause 1,” is obviously contrary to the Constitution’s intent. The authors of HR 1 disregarded the intent of the Constitution. What follows are some of many changes to election laws in HR 1. The first shock of HR 1 is its governance by the elite few and illustrates no faith in our republic. It requires “any action . . . to challenge . . . this Act . . . shall be filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and an appeal . . . may be taken to the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. These courts and the Supreme Court of the United States . . . shall have exclusive jurisdiction.” This is wrong. Does anybody not recognize this liberal bias? Voter registration formerly meant a visit to the county registrar and proving one’s identity. As proposed in HR 1, any individual who has given personal information to designated government agencies, (e.g. DMV, a public university or a social service agency) will, unless he/she declines, be automatically registered as a voter with his/ her county registrar without verifying identity or citizenship. As Californians have learned, our political party affiliation is sometimes listed erroneously without our input. HR 1 mandates no-fault absentee and mailed ballots and prohibits “requiring an individual to provide any form of identification as a condition of obtaining an absentee ballot.” This provision would do away with witness signature or notarization requirements for absentee ballots. Surely this is the dumbest requirement (or smartest for those wanting to corrupt the vote). Give me a hundred ballots and I will find a hundred voter names to apply. I cannot name another country that releases millions of ballots into the public and does not check voter identity. HR 1 provides a strong incentive, called the Freedom From Influence Fund, for those who are unconcerned to leave a large national debt for our grandchildren to settle. For each dollar a citizen wishes to donate to a candidate’s campaign fund, the amount contributed will be matched with six U.S. Treasury dollars for a total of $1,200 taxpayer dollars for each $200 donor contribution limit. However, this is subject to corruption. Thirty-four states have voter ID requirements and others are considering this. HR 1 would cancel those laws. Democratic Party reasoning is that ID requirements suppress voting, but that is based not on data, it is only a repeated lie. Georgia and Kansas recorded increased voting when ID requirements were increased. States normally offer free photo ID when implemented. HR 1 is a brazen power grab to cancel well-developed voter integrity laws of 50 states. Overlooked is that every illegal vote cancels a legal vote. sluggish economy and public schools on the premise that expanded vaccinations will stave off a Covid-19 resurgence here. Whether motivated by science or politics, the reopenings address the angst that has fueled the recall petition drive. However, should California experience the Covid-19 resurgence happening elsewhere, Newsom might be forced to reimpose restrictions, which would send unemployment, which is still too high, shooting upward again, rekindle criticisms of his performance and light a new fire under the recall. Moreover, Covid-19 is not the only potential pitfall for the governor. The state is experiencing drought, which means cutbacks in water supplies to farmers and perhaps households and could result in another horrendous wildfire season. Last year’s brief power blackouts reminded us that the state’s electrical supplies are marginally sufficient, a faint echo of Davis’ energy crisis. As Davis learned the hard way 18 years ago, in politics six months is an eternity. He failed to dampen popular discontent in 2003 and paid the price. Newsom now has six months to succeed or fail. The situation at the border has been in the news for weeks, and media organizations have repeatedly appealed for access to border facilities. Politico Playbook attempted March 24 to cast some perspective on the Biden border blockade against the media. “This is one instance where the media-bashing Trump was on the side of the press – and Biden, despite his supposed respect for the role of journalism, is not,” argued the newsletter. There were indeed moments when the Trump administration invited media organizations to tour border facilities, but reporters pounded Playbook with examples of Trump appointees hassling reporters on immigration stories. Playbook later ceded some ground: “We should have noted that although reporters were at times allowed to report from inside detention facilities, in other instances access was sharply limited or denied during Trump’s term.” Comparisons between the Trump administration and normal administrations don’t work. Nor, in this case at least, do we need them: After running on an immigration policy that reflects “our highest values as a nation,” Biden is keeping the press from reporting on whether his administration is meeting that promise. And that’s an outrage. Erik Wemple, The Washington Post’s media critic, focuses on the cablenews industry. Before joining The Post, he ran a short-lived and much publicized local online news operation, and for eight years served as editor of Washington City Paper.

1 dead after police pursuit, crash in Vallejo Daily Republic Staff VALLEJO — A man is dead after police said he led them on a brief chase Saturday in the city and crashed into a tree. The man who died was identified as a 32-yearold Contra Costa County resident. His name was withheld pending family notification, police report. Members of the Solano County Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a portion of the incident since the fatal crash happened during a police pursuit. The incident began just after 6 a.m. when Vallejo police officers responded to a call from a community member who reported seeing a man slumped over the wheel of an idling car that was parked in the area of Redwood Street and Chenin Blanc Place. Officers approached the vehicle, spoke with the man and identified themselves, police spokeswoman Brittany K. Jackson said Saturday night in a press release. The man drove off and fled from officers at a high rate of speed, Jackson reports in the
press release. The officers began pursuing the car, which reached an estimated speed of more than 85 mph in a 40 mph zone on Columbus Parkway. The pursuit lasted less than one minute and covered just over a mile before it ended when the man’s car hit a tree. Officers approached the vehicle and attempted to provide aid, but were unable to safely remove the man from the vehicle, Jackson reports. Paramedics arrived and determined the man was dead. Further investigation revealed the man was a wanted parolee and was driving a vehicle that was reported stolen out of Walnut Creek, Jackson reports. The Police Department initiated the Solano County Officer Involved Fatal Incident Protocol, handing the investigation over to the Solano County Major Crimes Task Force, Jackson reports in the press release. The California Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is leading the collision investigation.
Future: Uncertain From Page One Patient Experience Office of the VA Northern California Health Care System, said he is not in a position to comment on the matter. However, he said if the service is eliminated or reduced, there would be an impact. He also emphasized that there would be steps taken to deal with any fallout. “At any level of service, when that service is reduced, especially if (clients) believe that service has been helpful . . . (clients) would not be happy with that (decision),” Waterford said. Andre Williams, a patient advocate at Mare Island, said if the pharmacies are closed, it could be the homeless veterans who are hardest hit. The clinics allow them
to come to a single location to get their exams and other medical needs, and then go directly to the pharmacy for their medications. In-mail and other alternative services would not be working options for those specific veterans. Those veterans who do not have access to computers may also have difficulties in some cases. Waterford, a veteran himself, also noted that veterans can go to any community urgent care outlet and get a 14-day supply of medications to tide them over as needed. He said he could not say at this time what role other pharmacies in the communities could play if the clinic pharmacies are shuttered. “I’m sure there will be a plan in place,” Waterford said.
Plan: Battle brews From Page One Deese said on “Fox News Sunday,” adding that “we have a long way to go” to restore U.S. employment to pre-pandemic levels in the shorter term. Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican, said he could envisage bipartisan support on improving facilities like roads and airports, and possibly water systems and expanding broadband access – if the administration pared the package to something like $615 million. “You’d still be talking about less than 30% of this entire package and it’s an easily doable 30%, I think,” he said on Fox. “When people think about infrastructure, they’re thinking about roads, bridges, ports and airports.” The very meaning of “infrastructure” needs a
21st century makeover, said Cecilia Rouse, chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. “It’s important that we upgrade our definition of infrastructure, one that meets the needs of a 21st century economy, and that means we need to be funding and incentivizing those structures that allow us to maximize our economic activity,” Rouse said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Republicans portrayed Biden’s bid to cover the cost of the package by raising the corporate income tax to 28% from 21%, a reversal from former President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cut, as a non-starter that would kill jobs. “Let me just tell you, that’s going to cut job creation in the United States of America,” Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Rosario Correa, 34, and her son Michael Gamino Correa, 5, participate in his school Zoom class at home in Sacramento.
Latino From Page A3 Mary Ignatius, a statewide organizer at Parent Voices, a grassroots organization that aims to make child care accessible and affordable, said she knows some parents who quit their jobs in order to stay at home during the pandemic to assist their kids with in-home learning. She said low-income L atino households, who are disproportionately impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, often face language and digital barriers. Correa, the mother of three, fears her children are falling behind in school. She wishes she could do more to help them with their schoolwork, but said she is not fully profi-
cient in English. “In the mornings, I have to make sure they are at school,” she said. “I would like for them to be learning in school and that things could go back to how they were.” It’s not uncommon for Latino parents to turn to family members, like an aunt or grandmother, to take care of their children, according to Ferreira van Leer, while they are at work. In some cases, older siblings are asked to take care of younger siblings. “We don’t know what in the pandemic that’s looking like, but most likely it’s probably some mix of those things,” he said. Schumacher said many child care providers have permanently closed their doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, further limiting child care options for families. “We know that even
prior to the pandemic, 6 in 10 Californians were already living in a child care desert. If we lose even more providers that means it’s going to be even harder for families to access care,” Schumacher said, citing data from the Center for American Progress. “These child care deserts are concentrated in low- and middle-income communities, and also in Black and Latinx communities.” Currently, the state offers subsidized child care and preschool for 415,000 children through va r ious progra ms, according to a separate Legislative Analyst’s Office report. Sacramento City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby said many families in Sacramento feel disconnected from subsidized child care services in the city. One organiza-
tion she recommends is Child Action, Inc., which helps low-income families afford child care. She recommends working-class families enroll their children in after-school or summer programs provided by public schools. “Most people turn to their own families, their own neighbors and their own parents,” Ashby said. “That has really put people in a corner.” One report by the National Research Center on Hispanic Children & Families found that Hispanic families have historically “underutilized government assistance programs aimed at serving families who experience poverty, reporting that they do not need them or do not have knowledge of the assistance available or eligibility requirements.”
return. In her class of 30, five students said they would go back. Because her friends are not returning, the experience would still feel isolating, she said. “I’d rather be alone in my pajamas,” she said. Farther east, the Covina-Valley Unified School District is preparing for an April 12 high school return under a schedule where students attend in-person classes twice a week then online at home. The school district is 78% Latino. Across all secondary schools in the district, about 54% of students will return for in-person learning, according to survey results. Naia Pizarro, a student at Northview High School, said she was surprised to see how quickly her school was moving to reopen. “I just don’t feel prepared to go back,” the senior said. Feeling safe, she said, would include vaccines for herself and classmates. In one class of 13 students, she said, three students plan to go back. Ultimately, Naia supports her family decision to keep her and her two siblings in distance learning. “If there’s three of us, it’s kind of three times the chance to bring Covid back,” Naia said. “You’re kind of risking a lot.” Still, some students are embracing their return to campus. Campbell Hall High School junior JJ Hoffman recently visited campus for the first time in about a year. The private Episcopal school with annual high school tuition of $42,690 has moved quickly to bring students
back. About 45% of students in grades nine through 12 returned in March for a trial hybrid schedule, a school administrator said. JJ said he was underwhelmed by the return: The library where he used to hang out with his friends remained closed. And because his school split the cohorts by last name, most of his friends attend on different days. Yet JJ plans to finish the school year in person. He said he feels safe with the masking requirements and plexiglass barriers on outdoor tables. “As long as it goes pretty smoothly, and they figure out how to make it as best as they can,” he said, “I think I’ll be happy in hybrid learning the rest of the year.” Kayla Coulter is one of 719 students who plan to return to Long Beach Unified’s Cabrillo High School, which serves 1,979. Seniors, like Kayla, will start on April 19. Unlike LAUSD, Long Beach Unified is permitting students to move from classroom to classroom. Kayla started her second semester off with two failing grades in classes she never thought she would fail: English and AVID, a college prep course. She can sleep in thanks to the later start time of online classes, but she has to put in extra hours to better grasp the material she learns in class. She hasn’t yet heard if her friends will return as well, but was surprised that only about a third of students have said yes so far. “I thought everybody would be back.” Still, she is excited, even if it’s just a few days a week on campus. She is still trying to figure out what she’ll wear on her last first day of school. “I can’t wait to go back.”

Stanford women win third national title San Francisco Chronicle Nearly three decades after the program won its second national title, the Stanford women’s basketball team has earned its third. Head coach Tara VanDerveer and the Cardinal withstood a strong defensive effort from Arizona to pull out a 54-53 decision in the championship game in San Antonio on Sunday. The Wildcats had a chance to win it at the end. After Stanford’s 21st turnover the game, Arizona inbounded the ball near midcourt with 6.1 seconds left.
Pac-12 Player of the Year Aari McDonald got the ball and she got swarmed by Anna Wilson, Lexie Hull and Cameron Brink. McDonald lofted a 3-point attempt that was off the mark, and Stanford had escaped with its second straight one-point win. The Cardinal prevailed 66-65 over South Carolina in the Final Four on Friday after the Gamecocks missed two pointblank shots in the final seconds. VanDerveer and the Cardinal won titles in 1990 and 1992. Stanford (31-2) finished this season on a 20-game winning streak. Stanford led by nine early
in the fourth quarter, but after McDonald knocked down a three with 3 1/2 minutes to go, Arizona (21-6) had cut the deficit to 51-50. It was still the same score a minute later. That’s when Haley Jones maneuvered into the lane and somehow got her shot to fall despite getting fouled. Jones, named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, made the ensuing free-throw try to give Stanford a four-point edge. Turnovers, which plagued the Cardinal all game, led to three foul shots by McDonald that set up the dramatic final seconds. McDonald had a game-
high 22 points but was 5-for-20 from the floor. Jones, an alum of Mitty, led Stanford with 17 points. Hull had 10 points and 10 rebounds as Stanford owned a 47-29 edge on the glass. Not only is this Stanford’s first national title since 1992, it’s the first for any West Coast team since then. Stanford won both regular-season meetings with the Wildcats, 81-54 in Tucson on New Year’s Day and 62-48 at Maples Pavilion on Feb. 22. The Cardinal ran off 12 straight points to go up
14-3 midway through the first quarter. Ashten Prechtel capped the run with an excellent feed to a cutting Jones for two. Turnovers then began plaguing the Cardinal, helping Arizona answer with a 16-4 spurt that put the Wildcats on top 21-20. A turnover led to the go-ahead basket as Shaina Pellington stole an errant Lacie Hull pass and converted the miscue into a layup. Stanford responded with an 11-0 stretch that began with Brink follow shot off her miss. Hull enjoyed the rare four-point

Relocation negotiation MLB could honor Negro Leagues by moving All-Star Game to Kansas City Jack Harris
LOS ANGELES TIMES

OS ANGELES — To celebrate a gamechanging century, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum was planning to have a “game-changing” year in 2020. That’s how Bob Kendrick, president of the Kansas City-based museum, described it – a year-long long celebration of the Negro Leagues’ 100th anniversary that was to feature events in ballparks across the country, in
ANALYSIS front of fans across the sport, but would always be centered in Kansas City, where the first official Negro League was founded a century before. “We were off and running, we were off to a flying start,” Kendrick said, speaking from his office during the summer. “Then, just like that, everything comes to a screeching halt.” The Covid-19 pandemic, of course, was to
blame, disrupting not only the 2020 Major League Baseball season but all the centennial celebration events the Negro Leagues Museum was planning to stage around it. “A year of planning and anticipating had to be extinguished almost in the blink of an eye,” Kendrick said. “It was going to be a gamechanger for the museum, in terms of the platform, the national and international platform that the celebration was going to create.”
Maybe, one year and millions of Covid-19 vaccinations later, that celebration can still take place. Perhaps Kansas City should host the relocated 2021 All-Star Game. ere is an early reaction, maybe an overreaction, to the Oakland A’s first four losses of the season: The Astros look more than ready to reclaim the American League West division title from the A’s this year. Granted, the first four games of the season don’t even begin to tell whole story. But this opening series did not paint the prettiest picture for the A’s, who suffered their first four-games sweep at the Astros’ hands since June 2017. Culminating in a 9-2 loss on Easter Sunday, this was just the second four-game loss to Houston in franchise history. “We don’t feel good about it. A little bit embarrassing,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We played really poorly and they played great.” And this 2021 A’s team is no A’s 2017 team. This roster has been restocked and revitalized to not only contend for the postseason for
ANALYSIS a fourth-straight year, but make a deep run that’s eluded the franchise for decades. Oakland isn’t off to the best start against a team also jockeying for a deep postseason run, and they’re not out of the clouds yet as the defending world champion Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Coliseum for three games next and the travel to Houston for three more away. This is the first time the A’s have lost more than three straight to start the season since they went 0-5 in 1987. It’s the first time the A’s have been on the receiving end of a four-game sweep since July 2017 against the Blue Jays in Toronto. That’s the scope of a disappointing start to this fvull season for the A’s, rife with higher expectations. What’s going wrong, exactly? The A’s aren’t executing on any front. Houston outscored the A’s 35-9 in the series.
Sean Manaea had the start Sunday and pitched well. His breaking ball was falling out of the zone and he was working the outer half of the zone with his low-90mph sinker. The Astros may thrive off mistakes, but they don’t need an opposing pitcher to make one. The Astros collected five runs off Manaea. Kyle Tucker’s firstinning home run came on a decent sinker. Jason Castro didn’t get all of an outside pitch, but hit it 101 mph off the bat for an opposite field two-run home run. Jose Altuve knocked a two-strike slider at his feet for a double that charged a three-run rally in the third. Manaea struck out four batters and walked three through 4 2/3 innings while throwing 101 pitches. Houston wore him down, just like they did every other A’s starter. Through the first four games, the A’s starters have a 7.65 ERA. See A’s, Page B8
Two days after suffering the third-worst loss in franchise history, the Warriors resolved to come out Sunday in Atlanta with renewed energy and focus. And though the Warriors got Stephen Curry (37 points) back from another tailbone-related absence and an admirable defensive performance, old problems cropped up in their 117-111 loss to the Hawks at State Farm Arena. The Warriors (23-27) used timely rotations, hard close-outs and valiant team-rebounding to hold the Hawks (26-24) to 43.2% shooting (37.5% from 3-point range), but went 10-for-40 from 3-point range themselves, turned the ball over 16 times and committed 26 fouls that led to 35 points at the freethrow line for Atlanta. These things have plagued the Warriors throughout the season,
and tilted the result in the opposite direction Sunday night. “I thought the whole group competed and everybody played hard and together,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “But the lack of discipline killed us. That’s the bottom line.” Unlike Friday’s 53-point blowout loss to the Raptors in Tampa, Fla., this game featured 17 lead changes and came down to the final minutes. Curry’s 30-foot moon shot at the end of the third quarter gave the Warriors an 82-79 lead heading into the fourth, but the second unit gave up the lead as Danilo Gallinari (25 points) and Lou Williams (15 points) led Atlanta’s fourth-quarter push. Williams’ jumper punctuated a 12-4 run that gave the Hawks a 105-98 lead with five minutes remaining. Even after Curry checked back in with See Warriors, Page B8
Success makes Gonzaga shine Los Angeles Times Amid the torrent of tributes that Jalen Suggs received after sinking the shot of a lifetime to beat UCLA and preserve Gonzaga’s unbeaten season – former NBA star Dwyane Wade tweeting that it made him jump onto his kitchen table – one could have only come from teammate Joel Ayayi. Ayayi, the guard from Bordeaux, France, who grew up learning what he described as “British English,” lavished some of that lingo on Suggs following his 40-footer at the overtime buzzer that banked through the net and the Bruins’ hearts. “I fancy you,” Ayayi told him as they came off the court following the Bulldogs’ 93-90 overtime victory in an NCAA tournament national semifinal. That sentiment could double as the mantra of the increasingly talented high school prospects
and transfers who have helped Gonzaga, a small private school in Eastern Washington, bludgeon bigger basketball powers on the way to becoming a national recruiting brand. The Bulldogs (31-0) will face Baylor (27-2) on Monday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in the national championship game having beaten out not only the Pac-12 schools in their geographic footprint but also far bigger threats for the talent that has positioned them on the verge of college basketball’s first unbeaten season in 45 years. Derek Chauvin trial brings Court TV to a new generation Los Angeles Times, When cameras in courtrooms emerged in the 1990s, Court TV was the groundbreaking cable network that gave the viewers a front-row seat to the notorious trials of William Kennedy Smith, O.J. Simpson and the Menendez brothers. But as courtroom coverage became a common staple of cable news and true-crime programming, Court TV strayed from its mission and eventually receded from the media landscape under the ownership of WarnerMedia (then called Time Warner). The network became a reality-based entertainment channel and was renamed truTV. In May 2019, Court TV was revived by Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps as a new programming service, acquiring the iconic brand name and the original network’s library of past trial coverage. Viewers are rediscovering the channel as the country focuses on the trial of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer charged with the May 2020 killing of George Floyd, which sparked a national uprising over race relations and law enforcement. “Without a doubt this is the most important and high-profile trial that we’ve covered since the relaunch,” said Scott Tufts, senior vice president for Court TV. “It may go down as being one of the biggest and most important trials in U.S. history to air on television. This is going to be a really good opportunity for people to find us again.” Atlanta-based Court TV is the only national broadcast outlet providing gavel-to-gavel coverage of Chauvin’s trial, the first time cameras have been allowed in a Minnesota courtroom. The network has provided uninterrupted coverage of the case for three weeks before the trial began on Monday, including pretrial hearings and jury selection. Viewing for the total day is up 30% over that time, according to Nielsen data. Livestreaming has risen from 3 million minutes a week to 13.5 million, a jump of 346%. Court TV is available to 112 million homes across the U.S. on digital sub-channels, the additional over-the-air stations broadcasters received when they converted to digital highdefinition signals in 2009. It’s also available on cable systems across the country where the stations have carriage agreements. The channel also can be livestreamed for free through the Court TV website, a mobile app and on advertiser-supported streaming services such as Pluto TV and Roku. The business plan for the new Court TV is what Tufts calls “platform-agnostic.” As the universe of cable and satellite diminishes with cord-cutting, Court TV is positioned to reach viewers in all of the ways they consume video. “I have three children in their late 20s and they watch on their phones and iPads,” said Tufts. “My mom who is in her 70s watches us on linear TV.” E.W. Scripps is banking on more viewers turning to free over-the-air antennas to receive programming as the number of subscription streaming services proliferates and prices increase. Recent Nielsen figures show that nearly 50 million American U.S. households – about 40% of homes with TV – owned antennas in 2020, up from 29% in 2019. Court TV is sold to adver-
tisers as part of a package of over-the-air networks, which include Bounce, which caters to Black viewers; Grit, which airs classic TV shows and Western movies; Newsy, a news channel that targets millennials; and the recently acquired ION, which offers repeats of such popular dramas as “Law & Order.” “They are building a hybrid through broadcast, cable and streaming to aggregate impressions for advertisers,” said Bill Hague, executive vice president of Magid, a media consulting firm. “The overall network strategy is interesting.” Tufts said Scripps saw an opportunity in Court TV as cable news channels like CNN, which once feasted on highprofile court cases such as the Casey Anthony murder trial, shifted more to politics over the decade. The focus on Washington became even more intense once former president Donald Trump proved to be a reliable ratings magnet for cable news. The new Court TV looks a lot like the old one, with correspondents and anchors who have practiced law or hold law degrees. The bulk of the action comes from static camera shots in the courtroom and feeds of video evidence shown to the jury. The analysis during the Chauvin trial, which has extended into prime time, deals exclusively with legal tactics, not the political or social aspects of the case. The channel gathers social media comments from viewers on what they have seen and presents them in the evening. “It’s really in the tradition of what Court TV has always done,” Tufts said. “This gives us a chance in this really polarizing news climate to offer a product that is strictly based on facts and the law.”

by Phillip Alder showed some 18-20 high-card points and at least a five-card suit. This was a slight overbid because the red-suit honors rated not to be pulling their full weight, and South had a six-loser hand when North assumed five. West leads the diamond 10, high-low with a doubleton. East wins with his queen (bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high), then cashes the diamond ace. But what does he do next? Knowing that declarer still has a diamond and that partner is out, there is a natural reaction to lead a third diamond. Surely West can ruff higher than dummy’s spade six. Then, in a perfect world, West will play a heart to his partner’s ace, and another diamond will produce a trump promotion for down two, West having started with king-eight-doubleton in spades. Fine, except that West cannot ruff higher than the board, and declarer collects an overtrick. At trick three, East should cash the heart ace (denying the king after trick one). Here, West will signal enthusiastically with the eight, and a second heart will defeat the contract. But if West doesn’t have the heart king and does have a spade higher than dummy’s six, he will discourage in hearts. If there are two chances to defeat a contract, try both – if possible. Chinese egg tarts evoke sweet memories, fusion cuisine
Marian Liu
The Washington Post
B
aking has always been my source of stress relief, especially now when I’m stuck at home due to the pandemic. Instead of taking it out on a punching bag, I find myself mixing everything by hand, working it out with the dough. I also use that time to find recipes to reconnect to my roots, evoking memories of childhood, like egg tarts. Going to the Chinese supermarket with my family was a weekly pilgrimage, and the reward was always egg tarts. As the evil older sibling, I convinced my brother that they were disgusting, so I could have his share. I kept this charade going until college when he reluctantly bit into one and realized just how heavenly they are. More recently, when I moved to Hong Kong for work, I feasted on egg tarts on the regular. It became a favorite afternoon pastime to wash down a few with coffee and people-watch at a cafe. “Egg tarts have a long history in Hong Kong, they are indispensable, and they are completely integrated into the lives of Hong Kong people,” said Siu Yan Ho, a former chef who teaches at the Department of Chinese at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Now back in the states, I’ve used quarantine time to figure out how to make them at home. It’s not easy, especially for a pastry newbie like me, but it’s definitely worth the time and effort. Even before the pandemic, it was hard to find a Chinese bakery in Washington, much less one with freshly baked egg tarts. “While it is possible to make egg tarts at home, due to its delicacy, there is a lot of work and preparation involved,” said Janice Wong, corporate manager of Kee Wah Bakery in Los Angeles and granddaughter of its founder, who started the bakery in Hong Kong in 1938. “Be patient, as it may take many trials and errors before a satisfactory result is reached.” It took me six batches to get it right. For the first try, I used a pie tin, which I don’t recommend. As a full-size pie, the egg tart simply had too much filling. It’s like an Oreo cookie – the filling-to-crust ratio has to be just right. I like to take my time eating an egg tart, nibbling around the crust before devouring down the middle. The dessert is a representative of Hong Kong’s fusion cuisine. There are variations with flaky or cookie crusts, caramelized or glossy tops, and even with Hokkaido cheese or green tea. But, my favorite has always been the flaky crust with a simple, delicate egg filling. The flaky crust with a puffy pastry is from Guangzhou, China, an open port like Hong Kong, Ho said. It was created in the 1920s with lard when restaurants were coming up with new combinations of dim sum. Many of these restaurants had branches in Hong Kong. The cookie crust, however, is made with butter and derived from a custard tart during the

Chinese Egg Tarts are heavenly fresh out of the oven, but they do not keep well past a day. British colonization of Hong Kong, Ho said. But instead of the more expensive cream and milk filling, Hong Kong bakeries used eggs, sugar and water. This is similar to a Chinese-style stewed egg dessert, he said, which is much softer and smoother. Basically, it’s like a flan or a creme brulee, said Dave Lazaro, marketing manager for one of my favorite Taiwanese bakeries, 85 Degrees, which has 65 locations in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Texas. The egg tart is also one of their top selling items out of 50-some types of bread and pastries. “It’s just that subtle combination,” Lazaro said. “It’s not overly sweet. So when you eat it, you don’t feel like it’s too heavy or too rich, and then it has that texture where it’s just right.” After testing multiple batches of egg tarts, here are mistakes to avoid. First off, invest in 3-inch wide, fluted metal – not disposable – tart tins. (The throwaway types are too shallow for a proper ratio of filling to crust.) The ruffled edges give you crispy, pretty finish. Lightly grease the tins with cooking spray. Second, make sure to work out the large lumps of butter in the dough. Small chunks are OK, but bigger ones will result in a crust that sticks to the tins. Third, don’t skip the multiple kneading, folding and refrigeration steps. Although extremely tedious, following through will ensure the crust will be easier to handle and super flaky. One more tip, while the tarts are heavenly fresh out of the oven, they do not keep well past a day. If your household can’t eat a dozen, you can bake them in batches. Place the dough in the tart tins, cover them tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate
them overnight or freeze them for up to a month. The filling can be mixed and refrigerated for up to two days. That way, you can bake a half-dozen at a time and make the happiness last longer. Chinese Egg Tarts Active time: 1 hour | Total time: 5 hours 15 minutes 6 servings (2 tarts) Writer Marian Liu makes her egg tarts the traditional way, with a multistep, homemade pastry dough that turns the process into a weekend baking project. If you want to cut the preparation time, you can use a flaky pie crust, a press-in cookie dough recipe (see related recipes), or storebought puff pastry dough, which will get your closest to Liu’s homemade dough. One 9 1⁄2 -by-10-inch sheet of puff pastry (about 10 ounces) works, but you may need to re-roll scraps for a few of the tart tins. You will need tins that are about 3 inches wide by about 1-inch deep. You also need a 3 1⁄4 -inch cookie cutter. These tarts taste best fresh from the oven. If you do not plan to serve all 12 at once, make the filling and press the dough into the tart molds. Then refrigerate the filling and the tart tins, tightly covered, for up to 2 days. Then, fill and bake the tarts as needed. Make Ahead: The filling can be refrigerated for up to 2 days, but must be rewhisked before using. The dough can refrigerated, tightly wrapped in plastic, for up to 3 days. It also can be rolled out and molded into the tins, then frozen, tightly wrapped in plastic, for up to 1 week. Storage Notes: The baked tarts are best the day they are made; they do not store well. For the filling: 1 ⁄4 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar 1 ⁄2 cup (120 milliliters) hot water 1 large egg, at room temperature 1 ⁄4 cup (60 milliliters) evaporated milk 1 ⁄4 teaspoon vanilla extract For the butter dough: 1 stick (4 ounces/113 grams) very cold unsalted
butter, cubed ⁄4 cup (30 grams) allpurpose flour Pinch of salt For the egg dough: 3 ⁄4 cup (85 grams) all-purpose flour, plus more as needed 1 large egg, at room temperature 1 tablespoon water, at room temperature Pinch of salt Cooking spray or vegetable oil, for greasing the tins Make the filling: In a medium bowl, dissolve the sugar in the hot water, then refrigerate until the syrup is cool to the touch, 30 to 45 minutes. In another medium bowl, whisk the egg with the evaporated milk and vanilla until combined. Whisk in the cooled syrup until combined. Using a fine-mesh strainer, pass the filling through several times, so it is completely smooth. Refrigerate until well chilled, 20 minutes. Make the butter dough: In the bowl of a food processor, combine the butter, flour and salt and pulse until it clumps into a ball. (Alternatively, you can work the butter into the flour by hand until it becomes a ball.) Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap, shape into a 1-inch (2.5-centimeter) thick rectangle, wrap tightly and refrigerate until cold, at least 1 hour and up to 1 day. Make the egg dough: When the butter dough is sufficiently cold, in a medium bowl, combine the flour, egg, water and salt and mix until not overly sticky to the touch. Dust the counter with additional flour and roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch (about 3 millimeters) thickness. If the dough sticks to the counter, use a thin spatula or bench scraper to release it and add more flour to the surface. Unwrap the butter dough and place it in the middle of the egg dough. Wrap the butter dough in the egg dough – first folding top and bottom and then right and left – as if wrapping a present. Generously flour your work surface and dust your rolling pin and the dough with the flour. Roll 1
out the dough to a large, 1⁄4 -inchthick rectangle; you may need to rotate the dough a quarter-turn every now and then and dust with a little more flour as you go. Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter, and then fold the shorter side in half, creating a compact rectangle. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour. Repeat rolling out, folding and chilling of the dough two more times. Try to keep the dough in a neat rectangle as you roll and re-roll it. Once the dough has chilled for the last hour, position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees. On a generously floured counter, roll out the dough to about 1⁄16-inch (2-millimeter) thickness. Using a 3 1⁄4 -inch round cookie cutter, cut out circles for the crust. You can re-roll the dough scraps twice, as needed. Lightly grease each tin with cooking spray or oil and place a circle of dough into each tin. Press the dough into the bottom and up the sides of the tin and, using a fork, prick the bottom and sides of the crusts. Chill the crusts for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and place the tins on top. Fill each tin to about two-thirds of the way with the filling, about 2 tablespoons. Bake the tarts for 15 minutes, then decrease the oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake for an additional 7 to 10 minutes, or until the crust is light golden and a toothpick inserted in the center of a tart can stand up on its own without falling over, or the center is set, but still slightly jiggly. Transfer the egg tart tins to a wire rack and let cool completely before serving, about 20 minutes. Remove the cooled tarts from the tins and serve at room temperature. Refrigerate cream liqueurs, but it’s OK if you leave others out The Washington Post The Washington Post Food staff recently answered questions about all things edible. Here are edited excerpts from that chat. Q: My spouse and I rarely buy liqueurs, but have on hand triple sec and Drambuie. I discovered online that Drambuie is supposed to be refrigerated after opening. Seriously? Apparently, I’ve
been doing it wrong for decades! If true, does that apply to the triple sec, as well? A: I think this is a little bit of a myth. While there may be some benefits to refrigerating some liqueurs, and you absolutely should refrigerate cream-based liqueurs like Bailey’s and wine-based aperitifs like vermouth, sherry, port and assorted quinquinas, generally liqueurs do not require refrigeration. If I had infi-
nite fridge space, would I chill them? Yes, but more so they’re nice and chilly when I need to mix with them. We have [blush] three refrigerators at our house, and there’s not a liqueur in the bunch. Including my Drambuie, which has been sitting happily on a shelf at room temp for a couple of years. — M. Carrie Allan
Q: I am confused about how to use the white and green parts of scallions. I have been putting the
white parts in salads. Is that wrong? A: Not wrong at all! Honestly you can use them however you like to eat them. I scoff at recipes that say “white and light green parts,” as if you’re supposed to avoid the dark green parts like the plague. Honestly, I find it to be an issue that we trim off too much of our veg anyhow. — Joe Yonan
Q: Is it really possible to sharpen kitchen
scissors by cutting aluminum foil with them? At least one cooking show and many Internet sites claim it works, but it doesn’t work for me so far. If it is a real sharpening method, please explain how to do it correctly. Might the brand of foil matter? A: I’ve never done this, but it seems to me that for dull scissors, this would only make them more dull. I have a pair of serrated kitchen scissors
that I never sharpen and another that I get sharpened or sharpen at the same time as I sharpen my knives. I used to live in a neighborhood where a knife sharpening truck would drive up to each block and ring a bell and we’d all rush out of our apartments to get our knives and scissors sharpened! I’m no longer there, so now I use a sharpening stone and honing steel instead. — Daniela Galarza

If a Bidder is unable to obtain the full 3% participation by one or more DVBEs, then the bid may be found responsive only if it establishes “good faith efforts” to meet the goal. The requirements for good faith efforts are set forth in Special Provisions Section 00 8000, Article 4 and the attachments thereto. Section 1.09 The successful Bidder shall be required to pay its workers on this Project a sum not less than the general prevailing rate (applicable at time of bid advertisement date) of per diem wages and not less than the general prevailing rate for holiday and overtime work for work of a similar character in the locality in which the Project is performed, as provided under California Labor Code Sections 1726-1861. Warriors: Fouls added 16 points and Draymond Green, back from a finger sprain that sidelined him Friday, had 11 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and four steals. But the Hawks took 45 total free throws, including 27 in the second half. No matter Curry’s heroics this season and a defense that has, at times, been dominant, the Warriors have ranked near the bottom of the league in fouls committed. “We lost the game because we fouled over and over and over again,” Kerr said. “We talk about it every day, talked about it before the game, talked about it at halftime, but it’s as simple as that.” Over the last few weeks, Kerr has remarked his team is on the precipice of going on a run, believing perhaps the fouling would subside with experience. However, even as defending without fouling is reviewed in film study and drilled in practice, the Warriors cannot shake the constant reaching.

sary of the first women’s college basketball game. On April 4, 1896, Stanford beat Cal 2-1 in San Francisco. ... Arizona went 17-for-59 (28.8%) from the floor. No team shot better than 41.8% against Stanford all season.
“He was going to Gonzaga at one point,” Daniels said of Farmar, “but the new staff came in and kind of changed his mind.” Others who started their careers at Pac-12 schools and finished them with the Bulldogs include Jordan Mathews (California) and Nigel Williams-Goss (Washington). Suggs said he came to Gonzaga to win a national championship but still faces questions about opting for the juggernaut of the West Coast Conference over more established brands. “People always ask me, ‘Why Gonzaga? Why is this a place you want to come, a small city in Washington, a small conference in the WCC?’ “ Suggs said. “It’s not like the Big Ten, the Big 12 or any of that. I mean, for the people and for the culture, that’s why I chose to come here. And I knew coach [Few] had the utmost trust in me and believed in me to make plays at all times.” Michaelson acknowledged that the Pac-12’s having placed UCLA in the Final Four and USC and Oregon State in regional finals could bolster the conference’s recruiting profile. To him, it won’t alter the pecking order when it comes to who’s best in the West. “Our rise has caused us to be able to recruit against anybody,” Michaelson said, “whether that’s the Pac-12 to the blue bloods and to be able to draw the right person to Spokane, but it’s about the right fit and the right kid. That’s never going to change.”
Relocation: May honor centennial mark From Page B1 people of color, few markets present an opportunity as special as Kansas City. Just imagine, an entire week at Kauffman Stadium during which the history of the Negro Leagues is featured front-and-center. Picture the patrons, arriving nationwide, flooding a Negro Leagues Museum that, in its early days, only survived with the financial support of former Negro League players themselves cutting checks to cover the rent. Think of the impact, both on the long-term growth of the museum, and of the message MLB could send – the way it could take an ugly story and make it a

templated attending Duke before transferring to Gonzaga. Gonzaga is also widely considered the front-runner for Chet Holmgren, a 7-footer from Minnesota who’s considered the top high school prospect in the class of 2021. “If they get the Chet Holmgren kid, all bets are off,” Donny Daniels, a former assistant at Gonzaga under Mark Few and at UCLA under Ben Howland, said Sunday by telephone. “I mean, right now, they’re a national destination. So beating the Pac-12? No, they’re beating everybody.” This is no longer that plucky little school that had to scrape together a roster of international finds, regional prospects and transfers. Gonzaga has amassed talent for years, but a symbolic shift occurred in 2016 when forward Zach Collins became the first McDonald’s All-American to sign with the Bulldogs out of high school. He stayed only one year before heading to the NBA. Gonzaga’s current roster features three likely NBA first-round draft picks in Suggs, sharpshooter Corey Kispert and mustache-stroking big man Drew Timme, with more likely on the way. Coaches and players alike tout the family culture and emphasis on development that have been staples of Few’s run that started in 1999, but five consecutive 30-win seasons also tend to be
significant draws. “Definitely over the last six or seven years, I’ve seen an uptick because it’s all these kids know,” Gonzaga assistant coach Brian Michaelson said. “We’ve never missed an NCAA tournament in these kids’ lifetimes. We’re at a point now where these kids being recruited, in their formative years, we’ve never done anything less than win 30 games and be in a Sweet 16 and we’ve been to two Final Fours.” Only two of Gonzaga’s top seven players – Kispert and reserve forward Anton Watson – hail from Pac-12 states. Reserve guard Dominick Harris is the only player on the roster from California. Ayayi, whose jump shot is as smooth as the famed Cabernet Sauvignon from his home region, said he was recruited by a couple of Pac-12 schools but picked Gonzaga because of its small-town feel and history of international players. In recent years, the roster has included Killian Tillie ( France), Rui Hachimura ( Japan) and Jacob Larsen ( Denmark). The Bulldogs’ pipeline to France started with Ronny Turiaf, who would go on to play for the Lakers and Clippers. Gonzaga lured Adam Morrison, who went on to become an All-American, mostly because he was a local kid. Highly coveted point guard Jordan Farmar nearly picked the Bulldogs over UCLA before being wooed by Howland upon his arrival in Westwood.
powerful one. “We didn’t want this celebration to be watered down,” Kendrick said in June 2020, when Covid-19 regulations forced the museum to shut its doors. “I didn’t want to do celebrations in ballparks where there were no people in the stadium. That seemed to be doing a disservice to the magnitude of what this story is all about – both on and off the field.” Wouldn’t it be cool if MLB now decided to give the museum – and the Negro Leagues’ important and influential history on the sport and the country – one of its biggest platforms of all? If it provided a forum for all those canceled celebrations to be rescheduled
under a national spotlight? “Count me and [Kendrick] in to help in any way!” Kiona Sinks, community engagement and digital strategy manager of the Negro Leagues Museum, tweeted on Friday in response to the idea. “We have hosted the All-Star Game in 2012 before so it would be awesome to have [it] back in KC!” There is a major caveat: Missouri’s state legislature is considering its own controversial voting law that, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, would require
photo IDs and create other restrictions critics fear disproportionately affect people of color and other marginalized communities. If that passes, then MLB would likely have to look toward one of the increasingly few states that hasn’t tried pushing through voting restrictions this year. Yet, Kansas City provides an undeniable opportunity, too, a chance to create in 2021 what couldn’t be done in 2020. Think about it, Rob Manfred. There’s a century-long legacy to consider.

is clicking for the A’s right now. Luckily, they have 158 games left. This is a team that’s trying to shake the trend of getting off to sluggish starts to the season – they’ve started slow in each of their last contending years and been fueled by mid-summer flashes. It may be embarrassing for the A’s, but it’s certainly not the end of the world.
Gonzaga: Visibility helps with recruiting

6:30 to go, the Warriors went more than three minutes without a field goal. However, the defense kept them within striking distance. Down seven with 1:48 to go, Andrew Wiggins’ straight-away 3-pointer cut the deficit to 110-106 with 1:06 remaining, giving the Warriors a chance to steal the game. But Clint Capela’s tip-in with 41 seconds to go, followed by Wiggins’ missed 3-pointer on the next possession put the final stamp on the loss. After Friday’s embarrassing effort, in which Golden State trailed by more than 50 points by third quarter, players and coaches talked about competing until the final buzzer. They did that Sunday. Curry poured in shots from all over the court, going 12-for-23, but 3-for-12 from 3-point range. Kelly Oubre Jr. finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Wiggins

So far, Olson and Lowrie have been the most productive at the plate. Olson is 4-for-14 – he want 0-for-4 on Sunday – and Lowrie is 3-for-11. It’s safe to say nothing
