Trial ready to start in Floyd death Tribune Content Agency MINNEAPOLIS — George Floyd pleading for his life under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer has become a defining moment of our time. What began 10 months ago at the corner of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue has transformed into nothing less than an American reckoning on justice, racial equity, the proper role of law enforcement and the historical wrongs society has perpetrated on Black people. Monday morning, that moment leads to the 18thfloor courtroom of the Hennepin County Government Center, where a jury will begin to hear a murder and man-

slaughter case against since-fired police officer Derek Chauvin. The trial itself is about what happened that May evening, but it will also be a vessel into which a splintered society places its rage, anxieties and hopes. Like the trial after Rodney King’s beating, like the trial after Emmett Till’s murder, like the Scottsboro Boys’ trial, this case will be viewed as another chapter – perhaps a turning point – in America’s racial history. “Everything is riding on the outcome of the trial,” said Keith Mayes, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota’s Department of See Trial, Page A8

Bears in Tahoe not exhibiting fear of humans Tribune Content Agency SACRAMENTO — The video of a small bear, its head tilted at an inquisitive angle, caught ambling up to a Tahoe snowboarder was the sort of clueless cuteness guaranteed to go viral. But for scientists, it was just too cute to be true. The bear cub was exhibit ing behavior – fearlessness at being around humans – that’s been popping up in bears around the state, due to a mysterious lethal condition that causes their brains to become dangerously inflamed. Scientists have discovered five new viruses in

some of the bears with the symptoms, but they have no idea whether the viruses are to blame for the disease. Scientists’ suspicions were confirmed when veterinarians gave the Tahoe bear an exam after it was captured not long after the snowboarder filmed it at the Northstar resort in Truckee in 2019. It had encephalitis, which can also be caused by a body’s immune system attacking itself. State veterinarians say that in the past 12 months alone, officials have captured three other bears with the same condiSee Bears, Page A8

FAIRFIELD — A new Capitol Corridor schedule has started, what agency officials said is a step toward restoring service to prepandemic levels. “We cannot wait to welcome our passengers back,” Rob Padgette, managing director of the Capitol Corridor, said in a statement. “There are a lot of variables involved in planning our return to our full, pre-pandemic level of service, including public health conditions, train equipment availability and budget. But now is the time to start moving in that direction, and this schedule puts us in a position to achieve that goal.”

The new schedule, which went into effect Monday, comes almost a year, to the day, after Covid-19 forced the train service to be cut back from as many as 30 trains a day to just 10 trains, seven days a week. A direct, round-trip weekday train between Auburn and San Jose is part of the new schedule, which riders can find at https://images. capitolcorridor.org/wp-content/ uploads/2021/03/Train_Sched-

ules_3.29.2021-2.pdf. “The new schedule features adjustments to departure times so they are more consistent and predictable, sometimes called a ‘pulse schedule,’ and it features a better distribution of trips throughout the day with smaller gaps between morning and midday trains,” the statement said. “The schedule better connects our riders to BART service at the Richmond BART station with enough time to easily transfer to and from BART at the station,” the statement said. “The schedule also includes the return of a sixth round-trip between San Jose and Oakland, which will give riders more travel options between the two cities.”

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — When Rachel Hawley walked into the old Macy’s at Military Square mall to get her first Covid-19 vaccine shot, there were lots of wide eyes. She was 39 weeks pregnant. Hawley was eligible to get the shots, not only because she has an autoimmune disorder, but because she was expecting. So the 38-year-old Norfolk mother signed

Now, Quinn, nearly a month old, may be benefiting from the vaccine, too. Early results from studies around the world are showing that babies may receive Covid-19 antibodies in utero or through breast milk from

Man tackles ‘Rocky’ steps as part of learning to walk again Tribune Content Agency PHILADELPHIA — Chase Friedman awoke inside Thomas Jefferson University Hospital paralyzed from the neck down, wondering whether he’d walk again. Friedman, 25, slipped and fell on his friend’s bathroom floor on New Year’s Day in Philadelphia, a freak accident that severely injured his spine and left him unable to move his arms and legs. Doctors told him his chances of walking again were “50-50,” he said. The Los Angeles resident said he thought “my life was over.” But less than three months later, Friedman climbed the iconic Art Museum steps last Saturday, bringing friends, family, and strangers to tears. After he raised his fists at the top of the steps like Rocky Balboa, the fictional Philadelphia boxer and underdog hero portrayed by Sylvester Stallone in eight films, Friedman told the crowd that “anything is possible.” “I’m glad that people are inspired, because it does prove that you can beat the odds,” Friedman said. His journey up the 72 steps started well before Saturday. After surgeons put titanium pins in his spine, he learned to walk again at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. He practiced on treadmills and stairs, held up by

A gauntlet of supporters had formed to cheer him on, including family and friends who had flown in from his home state of California. a harness or his physical therapist, Erin Freimuth. Meanwhile, his recovery captivated hundreds of thousands of people on TikTok, the social media platform where he would post videos of his progress. A video promoting Saturday’s trek up the Art Museum steps racked up 1.8 million views. “Chase has always been a fighter,” said Jake Posnock, 25, Friedman’s childhood friend from San Diego, who recorded the climb for social media. “I think about it every day. I don’t know if I’d be in such good spirits. It’s really inspiring.” Friedman arrived in

a wheelchair and transitioned to a walker as he approached the steps. The crowd of about a hundred people, who were dancing, exercising, and posing for photos beforehand, fell silent. With the walker gone and Freimuth holding his waist, Friedman took each step slowly. The horns of the Rocky theme song blared from someone’s speaker. The crowd erupted when he reached each landing. The climb took about six minutes. “This is so moving,” said Teresa Jackson, 61, visiting from Richmond, Va., as Friedman neared the top. She said she was close to crying. Friedman, who works for a talent agency, is set to return to California on April 11. He plans to go to Disneyland and “we’re skipping every line,” he joked. At the Art Museum, Friedman was joined by more than a dozen friends and family members. His mom, Ilana Friedman, 56, said she couldn’t see her son for 23 days after the accident because of coronavirus restrictions. When she finally visited, the sight of her child unable to do anything was overwhelming, she said. But seeing him marching up the Art Museum steps on the first day of spring could bring hope for others, she said. “This is definitely a time when everybody in the world needs hope,” she said.

if she asked me, “Are you serious?” I had to tell the truth. Anyway, I would love Fairfield to jump-start this by having an Odessa-like celebration because I don’t actually want to move there as their Wi-Fi may be subpar. Plus that Bee Gees album sucked. If we adopt our own version of Humorina, some of the pranks we could do could include, but not be limited to: n Having Travis Air Force Base play the Jimi Hendrix version of “The Star Spangled Banner” over their loudspeaker in the evenings. n Having armored trucks leave their back doors open and allow replica money to blow out of the back as they drive away. n Having NorthBay Medical Center staff greet patients recovering from being anesthetized by wearing “Planet of the Apes” costumes and being stunned when the patients are able to speak. n Doing simple swaps between two things that are similar but different lends itself to many pranks. For example, Denny’s and Cast Iron Grill

customers could be given each other’s respective menus. While it would be a herculean logistical feat, perhaps the downtown Fairfield sign over Texas Street and the downtown Vacaville sign over Davis Street could be swapped. n Having an addendum put to the carpool lane signs on Interstate 80 that list the operative hours to say: “Mules OK.” n Hosting an Iocane Powder Drink-Off inspired by the movie “The Princess Bride.” Two contestants would engage in a battle of wits and then drink from chalices, one which is poisoned with iocane powder. The one who outsmarts the other and drinks the correct, unpoisoned one will become the champ and dress up as The Dread Pirate Roberts (and receive a stuffed Rodent of Unusual Size). The loser will be dressed up as the Sicilian Vizzini and, well, die. Reach Fairfield writer Tony Wade at toeknee weighed@gmail.com.

‘God is doing something’

The Rev. Mike Schmitz of Duluth is recording the entire Bible in 365 podcast episodes.

Priest’s daily Bible podcast tops charts, reaches millions

Tribune Content Agency DULUTH, Minn. — Sometime last spring, feeling distressed and distracted by all that was going on in the world, the Rev. Mike Schmitz turned to the Bible. “I realized it was grounding me in a unique way,” the Duluth Catholic priest said. “It helped me find a sense of peace.” That gave Schmitz, an avid podcast and audiobook consumer, an idea: If others were seeking similar refuge from the chaos of 2020, why not create a podcast walking them through

the holy book? On Jan. 1, he debuted “The Bible in a Year,” a 365-day series of episodes in which he will read aloud and provide commentary on the entire text by the end of 2021. By the following day, the podcast had soared to the No. 1 spot on Apple’s podcast charts, overtaking well-known true crime shows, comedy bits, political programs and news briefings. “The Bible in a Year” was iTunes’ most popular podcast for 17 consecutive days and has remained on Apple’s Top 15 list ever since. It has been

downloaded more than 33 million times, according to Ascension Press, the Pennsylvania-based Catholic multimedia network in charge of production. “It was a pleasant surprise because I’m literally just reading the Bible,” Schmitz said. “It’s just what people are hungry for, and that was really encouraging.” He teamed up with Twin Cities-based Bible scholar Jeff Cavins, who is featured regularly on the podcast to introduce new Biblical eras and explain upcoming characters and themes. Cavins developed the popular “Great

Adventure Bible Timeline,” which organizes all 73 books into a reading plan centered on the narrative parts of the text. “A lot of people want to read the Bible, but they don’t know how,” Cavins said. “You can’t look at it as a storybook – it’s a library of books.” Both Schmitz and Cavins have years of experience recording other podcasts, which is perhaps why the instant success of “The Bible in a Year” caught them off guard. “I think God is doing something, to be See Priest, Page A4

Some dream – others scheme – to find a vaccine before spring break Fred Mogul

Kaiser Health News

Hawaii, Florida, Seattle and the South of France are on the minds of New York City college students. Those are some of the destinations that undergrads mentioned when asked where they’d go for spring break, if they weren’t grounded by Covid-19. “I’d be getting a house with 10 people, with a pool, and we’d be going crazy in Miami,” said Sile Ogundeyin, 22, a senior economics major at Columbia University, who was sitting on the steps of the library with his friends. “I was supposed to be in London for study abroad this semester, so I probably would’ve gone someplace close to there for spring break – maybe in southern Europe,” said New York University sophomore Aliyah Verdiner, 20, a business major from Brooklyn. “That would’ve been a lot of fun, but I guess not this year.” S ome s t udent s , however, are being more adventurous. Rumors on campus abound about students who are exploiting loopholes and getting vaccinated against Covid in order to party and go on spring break. “She’s going skiing in Vermont with a bunch of friends,” Aliza AbuschMagder said of her roommate, whom she declined to name. “She’s very excited to be going to parties and – how do I say this? – making up for lost time in quarantine.” Abusch-Magder said her roommate was “calling on something in her medical history that doesn’t actually affect her day-to-day, to qualify for the vaccine.” Other young

But she also expressed doubt that such behavior is widespread at Columbia. “I think here it’s an outlier, and I think at some schools it’s standard,” she said, echoing what she’d heard from high school friends on other campuses. “There’s a very high standard of ethics here, and there’s a lot of discourse on it.” It’s impossible to know how often college students are getting vaccinated. Rumors about it happening illegitimately are widespread, but most of the stories appear to be secondhand. And many aren’t so nefarious on closer

examination, because some vaccinated students are actually eligible; they work in labs or health care settings, or they have underlying health issues that put them at high risk for severe Covid. “I put in my height. I put in my weight. And it said I was obese,” said Shira Michaeli, who was sitting on the Columbia library steps, “attending” an online lecture on human rights on her laptop. Obesity qualifies you for early vaccination in at least 29 states. Michaeli is a bit ambivalent, because she feels healthy, and she’s comfortable with her body weight, which she believes is not really a “comorbidity.” But she said she has had breathing problems ever since suffering a bad case of Covid last year. And she also plans to be a camp counselor this summer.

So she feels she qualifies for the vaccine on a few counts, even if her body mass index is what officially qualifies her. “I think, for a while, I was really insecure about it, and then I thought, ‘Listen, for most of my life [my weight] has been bad for me. Clothing hasn’t been my size. People haven’t been . . . ” Michaeli’s voice trailed off. “But for once in my life, it’ll benefit me, instead of hurting me.” The 19-year-old Bronx native was scheduled to receive her first shot the next day, so she was several weeks away from being fully vaccinated. She said it wouldn’t have mattered for spring break, anyway, because she had planned to stay close to her dorm, working on papers, perhaps sleeping in a little more than usual, and getting coffee with friends.

Searching the ocean for one of the world’s rarest whales Tribune Content Agency Crowded into a tiny plane, 1,000 feet above the water off Georgia, the surveyors look down in search of a disturbance – a long splash, or a dark patch amid all that blue. In the aberration, they might see nothing at all, or they could find dolphins, a turtle, a manta ray, some manatees. If they’re lucky, the surveyors will get what they are here for: a glimpse of a North Atlantic right whale, among the rarest in the world. The pilot follows a track line, the last part of the last pass of Dec. 4. There are thought to be fewer than 400 of the right whales alive today, and no more than 100 females that can breed. Human hunters decimated the species. Now this high-stakes game of “I Spy,” including three teams affiliated with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, is one part of an urgent mission to prevent these whales from blinking into extinction. Survivors swim to the Southeast, from the Carolinas to Florida, for calving season. As long as 52 feet, as heavy as 140,000 pounds, they may live up to 70 years unencumbered. The surveyors note each mother and precious calf they see, sending reports from sky to land. Within minutes their dispatches are shared with shipping companies to broadcast out to sea, so captains can be cautious. Boat collisions are deadly, yet more pres-

The four surveyors come from Maine, Rhode Island, Georgia and Florida. All have some background in marine biology. From December to March, they fold themselves into National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Twin Otter planes, any day the weather is fair. They can cover 300 or 400 nautical miles in about six hours, practicing moderate dehydration to avoid using the onboard toilet, which is just a tube. They crane their necks to look out bubble windows and unkink their aching limbs when they’re back on solid ground. They live together at a house in Georgia. When they see a whale, a slick shadow breaking through the Atlantic, one surveyor moves to a special pop-out window at the back of the plane, using a long camera lens to get a clear picture. The pilot traces expert loops to keep them in place. Every North Atlantic right whale has a unique pattern of raised skin on

its head, like calluses. This marking, similar to a fingerprint, allows the surveyors to identify each whale by number – and sometimes a name. They get to know the animals they see regularly: like Nauset, who never stays at the surface, taking one breath before diving for 10 minutes at a time. No paparazzi, they think. Over the months they track not just whales but moments that remind them of the work’s purpose. Marcy Lee, 48, enjoys every first sighting of a mother and calf pair. The conservation project manager, Melanie White, 39, holds onto the day they saw seven pairs, as if for a few hours the whales were everywhere. Ashley Millan Ambert, 30, solemnly recalls the three hours they circled above the first entangled whale they saw, while colleagues on a boat below struggled to free it of fishing gear wrapped around its tail. One calf they had spotted was later hit by a boat and killed, washing up on a beach in Florida. Soon after, they saw its

mother, Infinity, swimming with a propeller wound to her side. They hope for her survival. Saving one whale, they know, counts when there are so few. David Lockwood, 26, had never seen a North Atlantic right whale, his previous trips to the New England coast – their usual feeding and mating grounds – leaving him only with cold fingers. Then came the last few moments of this day in early December, the end of a shift to remember. The surveyors looked down and saw Chiminea, a whale who seems to like floating leisurely at the surface. She lingered. Chiminea was beautiful, Lockwood thought, gentle and graceful. Maybe such a whale just has to be seen to be understood. To be felt. So few people will. White, the team’s leader, tries to describe it. “Think,” she says, “about everything you’re surrounded by. “What do you know that there’s less than 400 of in the entire world?”

“I’m excited to get vaccinated, but I don’t think it’s going to give me any freedom other people don’t have,” Michaeli said. “I think I’ll be a little less anxious, but I don’t think it’s going to change any of my behavior. I think there are plenty of people being unsafe, so I don’t have any wiggle room to be unsafe.” Down in Greenwich Village, at NYU, there’s very little tension among the vaccine haves and have-nots when it comes to spring break – because there isn’t much of a spring break. It’s a single day, added to create a long weekend in March. But that doesn’t keep Simran Hajarnavis from dreaming. “If there wasn’t Covid, and there was a real spring break, I’d probably try to plan something with my friends,” she said, turning to one of them and asking:

Priest From Page A3 honest,” Cavins said. At the beginning of each episode, Schmitz introduces the podcast as a way to “encounter God’s voice and live life through the lens of scripture.” “The main goal was: How do we allow God’s word to speak to us in a small way every single day in such a way that it shapes the way that we see the world?” he said. Schmitz was raised in Brainerd, Minn., and went to college at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., before attending the St. Paul Seminary. The busy priest now juggles the new podcast with his duties as chaplain for the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Newman Catholic Campus Ministries and director of youth ministry for the Duluth diocese, so he often records a few episodes at a time, usually early in the morning or late at night. Each recording is about 20-25 minutes long and avoids mentioning specific dates so listeners can start the series at any time. Ascension also has

“Want to go to Hawaii?” Sitting in Washington Square Park, Hajarnavis and her girlfriends said they’re not too worried about being vaccinated right away, as long as they get their shots in time to study abroad in their upcoming junior year. A few yards away, Aishani Ramireddy said she has already gotten her vaccine, but she’s not doing anything differently from any other student. “It’s definitely weird,” she said. Ramireddy’s mother is a physician in Los Angeles. She said that, when she was home, she got the vaccine at the end of the day, at her mother’s office, because there were unused doses that would have been thrown out. Still, she feels conflicted about it. “It just felt like such a privilege to even have that as an option,” Ramireddy said. Another NYU student, Anna Domahidi, from Chicago, also had an option to get a vaccine, but declined. She doesn’t hold it against her friend Ramireddy, but she does question another friend, who she said talked up his childhood asthma to qualify for a shot. Domahidi still thinks he crossed an ethical line, even though he lives with a parent who’s immunocompromised: “That’s, like, a little better in my mind, but I don’t know.” Kaiser Health News (KHN) is a national health policy news service. It is an editorially independent program of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation which is not affiliated with Kaiser Permanente. a Facebook group with about 40,000 members where those listening to “The Bible in a Year” can connect and reflect on the day’s readings. Schmitz doesn’t know what will happen once he reads the final verses of Revelations at the end of the year, but he’s already mulling ideas for next steps – possibly a podcast diving deeper into specific parts of the Bible, like the Gospels, or one exploring the Catholic catechism, which explains the beliefs of the church. He receives a handful of e-mails and letters each day from listeners around the world sharing feedback and personal experiences linked to the daily passages. Cavins added that the responses aren’t coming from a single demographic – he’s heard from families who listen to the podcast during breakfast, firsttime podcast listeners, educators incorporating the podcast into their curriculum and people of other faiths curious about the Bible. Like millions of others, each is familiar with the steady voice of the Duluth priest, who tells them at the end of his daily recordings: “I cannot wait to see you tomorrow. God bless.”

Citizenship must be earned

B

arack Obama created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, without legislation to prevent deportation of undocumented immigrants who were brought into this country illegally by their parents when they were younger than 16. Approximately 650,000 are enrolled in the program, which protects them from deportation and allows them to work and pay taxes. About another 690,000 are eligible to apply for DACA. DACA does not provide for permanent residency or citizenship. Joe Biden wants Congress to pass legislation to allow for permanent residency for both groups immediately and citizenship after three years. Citizenship has historically required prerequisites to be earned. Congress can equitably solve the problem. Pass a bipartisan law that Roger Oberbeck allows illegal immigrants who have no criminal record, meet physical and mental standards and have a high school education to demonstrate citizenship potential by working for public services, such as the Peace Corps, the National Park Service, a National Civilian Conservation Corps and Disaster Relief for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. As an example, these workers could plant trees in the thousands of acres of national forests that have been burned in forest fires. After the completion of four years of honorable service, these volunteers would be eligible to apply for United States citizenship. This law would give these undocumented immigrants, many of whom have no knowledge of their country of origin and are presently not allowed to get a Social Security number or a driver’s license, a chance to become legal United States citizens. The situation is getting worse daily, as Biden follows his reckless campaign promises of open borders – promises which have encouraged more than 100,000 immigrants to mass at the southern border, with more arriving daily. Is this immigration or invasion? How many of these immigrants have job skills and are capable of supporting themselves? Do they expect United States citizens who work and pay taxes to support them with free medical care and social services? Many of these new arrivals are children. Thirty thousand minors crossed the border in February. Reportedly 87% of the unaccompanied minors are 13 to 17 years old. Some are as young as 6 years old. According to Texas authorities, many of these children are victims of sexual exploitation. How are these children traveling unaccompanied up to a thousand miles to get to the United States border? Who benefits: Politicians, criminal organizations, unscrupulous businesses? Another serious problem is the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants already in this country. Immigration and Customs Enforcement made 103,603 administrative arrests in FY 2020. ICE records identify 90% of those arrested had criminal convictions or pending criminal charges: 1,800 homicides; 1,600 kidnappings; 3,800 robberies; 37,000 assaults, 10,000 sex crimes. For the majority of undocumented immigrants with no criminal record, a path to citizenship should be provided. They should register as aliens, be given a green card, issued a Social Security number, pay federal income tax and be allowed to apply for United States citizenship. After five years of paying federal income tax and Social Security tax, they should be allowed to become United States citizens. Perhaps the United States government should offer aid to Central and South American countries to make their citizen’s home countries more attractive to live in. Rather than just giving them money, we should support building them schools, hospitals, housing and other infrastructure that would provide good, well-paying jobs for their citizens, which would give them an incentive to stay in their own country. This fits with the goals of the HUGE Business Council (Honduras, U.S., Guatemala and El Salvador), which wants to create 1 million jobs in three to five years and build roads, ports, airports and a connecting railroad from Guatemala to our Gulf Coast. If they build it, they will stay. Roger Oberbeck is a Navy veteran, guided missile system engineer, retired Navy nuclear engineer, author and biotech senior validation engineer. Beyond identity politics, Bonta’s ideological positioning is the most important aspect of his selection, because it gives a big boost to those seeking to overhaul California’s criminal justice system to make it less punitive and more restorative. Bonta has championed the cause in the Legislature, including landmark legislation to abolish cash bail that was overturned by voters last year. “Too many Californians have faced unfairness in the many broken parts of our criminal justice system,” Bonta said, “and they deserve more compassion, more humanity and a second chance.” Bonta will be aligned with a small cadre of reform-minded prosecutors, led by George Gascón, who had been district attorney of San Francisco before defeating Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey last year. Gascón and several other likeminded district attorneys founded their own group, the Prosecutors Alliance of California, that iswaging open warfarewith the California District Attorneys Association. Pointedly, the new organization praised Bonta as “a leader that has dedicated his career to protecting and uplifting vulnerable communities.” CALmattersis a public interest journalism venture committed to explaining how California’s state Capitol works and why it matters. think the issue boils to justice: how it works and what it is. The problem is that politics have become a religion, and religion has become politicized. At best, people on each side are talking past one another; at worst, people are really enraging one another. The solution is easy to say but hard to implement: We all have to learn to listen better, and with an open heart, if we expect to be heard ourselves. No one has ever changed someone else’s mind by yelling at that person. ‘Goldbergs’ to air tribute to Segal Tribune Content Agency “The Goldbergs” paid a special tribute to cast member George Segal, who died Tuesday at 87 following complications from bypass surgery. The veteran actor played Albert “Pops” Solomon, the World War II vet and ladies’ man father of Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Beverly Goldberg, on the hit ABC sitcom. Wednesday night’s episode ended with a photo of a Segal smiling, wearing a baseball shirt decorated with the word “Pops” on it. A title card read “In Memoriam 1934-2021.” Segal’s final episode of the show filmed before his death and is set to air April 7. The Oscar-nominated actor played such an integral role on the ’80s-

set sitcom, and sources say it’s possible his death will be addressed in the show, but that has yet to be confirmed. “He was kind, sweet, beyond talented and funny,” the show’s cast noted in a statement released Wednesday, calling the “national treasure” the “true epitome of class and he touched all of our lives so deeply.” They collectively said it was “an honor and a privilege to have him as a colleague and friend all of these years.” A prominent movie actor during the 1960s and 1970, Segal was nominated for an Academy Award in 1967 for his role in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” opposite Elizabeth Taylor. Some of his more notable films during that time period include “The Hot Rock” and “A Touch of Class.”

Feinstein breaks duration barrier

Kathleen Marie Anway de Groot

Los Angeles Times

Loving Wife, Mother and Grandmother Oct. 4, 1945 – March 25, 2021

Katie de Groot was born Kathleen Marie Anway in Palo Alto, California, in 1945 to Margaret and Robert Anway. She attended Nativity School and graduated in 1964 from Holy Cross High School in Mountain View. She married in 1966 and moved to Washington where she earned her B.A. in arts and a B.A. in education in 1968 from Eastern Washington State University. She raised four children while teaching school and moving around the U.S. as an Air Force spouse. She returned to California, earning an M.A. in education in 1993 from California State University, Sacramento, and was well on her way to obtaining her Ph.D. in clinical psychology while teaching special needs children full time. She married Ben de Groot on Sept. 23, 2000, and in each other, found true love. They built a home and a life together in Vacaville, high on a hill and covered the hills with wildflowers. After the house was built, they traveled the country visiting relatives and friends near and far. At home, they square-danced and played pinochle and planted a garden. Katie and Ben were blessed to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary and 75th birthdays in the past year. Katie passed away at home March 25 after a long battle with cancer, peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her loving husband, Ben de Groot; her daughters, Jennifer (George), Charity (Jason) and Katrina; her son, Thomas (Beth); her stepson, Jason (Dawn); her grandchildren, Chelsea, Tyler, Mykayla, Damon, Lily, Elliot, Owen and Rosalind; as well as Jeanette and April, whom she helped raise. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1791 Marshall Road, Vacaville. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery, 522 Elmira Road, Vacaville.

Babies: Hopeful From Page One vaccinated moms. A baby born in South Florida three weeks after her mother received the Moderna vaccine was born with the antibodies, two pediatricians learned when they tested the mother’s cord blood, according to a story in The Miami Herald. Another baby was born with the antibodies in Colorado in February, a few weeks after her mom got the vaccine. A study in Israel of lactating women who received the Pfizer vaccine had promising results. Doctors knew that mothers who previously had the virus could pass antibodies to their newborns, so they were hopeful the protection also would be possible after vaccinating expecting mothers. When the vaccines first received emergency authorization from the Food and Drug Administration, they weren’t tested on pregnant women, so initially, it was unclear if they should get it. But that has since changed. Several organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, the The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and others are supporting vaccination for particularly high-risk pregnant and lactating women, Brenner said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices reported that with the exception of smallpox and yellow fever, vaccines given to lactating mothers have not affected the safety of their breastfeeding. Hawley is breastfeeding Quinn and hoping her baby will get the antibodies as protection. The early results are giving experts in the field hope. Dr. Michelle Brenner, the medical director of The King’s Daughters Milk Bank at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters

has been looking at similar research around the world, including from a group in Norway, where scientists studied antibodies in breast milk samples. “If a mom is vaccinated toward the end of her pregnancy, she is providing immediate protection to that unborn baby, as well as when the infant is born, so the risk of transmission to the infant by someone else in the nursery, or by a family member would be decreased,” said Brenner, also a pediatrician and professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School. “So especially moms who are at high risk, it’s good for them to consider getting vaccinated during pregnancy.” Hawley, originally from upstate New York, wanted to make the best decision for her and her baby. She said when vaccines were first approved, there wasn’t much information available, but within a few months, research indicated it’s better to do it than not. She thought it would be more dangerous to not get vaccinated. “Healthy mom, healthy baby, I guess is the way I think about it,” she said. Dr. Margarita de Veciana, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, likens it to when a woman gets a flu vaccine or a TDAP vaccine in pregnancy, and their body mounts an antibody defense against the diseases. After birth or if they’re breastfeeding their baby, they’re passing along these antibodies. It’s just as if they’ve gotten any other vaccine in pregnancy, so it makes a lot of sense, she said. However, experts don’t know how long the antibodies last or if it’s enough to protect the baby if he or she were exposed to the virus. “All those are questions that remain unanswered and I’m sure there’s going to be studies looking at that, at this point,” de Veciana said.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Sunday became the longest-serving senator in California history, surpassing a record set in the 1940s. The Democratic senator has been in office for 10,372 days, breaking the record set by Hiram Johnson, a former gover-

nor who took office in the Senate in March 1917 and served until his death in August 1945. Feinstein, 87, declined an interview request but said in a statement that she is proud of the work she’s doing and “proud that I’ve been able to make real change over the years, from environmental protection and national security to consumer safety and eco-

nomic opportunity.” She wrote the nation’s first federal assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. As head of the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2014, Feinstein fought both the Obama-era CIA and Republicans to release unclassified portions of a massive government investigation into U.S. use of torture.

First elected in 1992, called “the year of the woman” because four new female senators were elected, Feinstein is the oldest senator and the longest-serving female senator in office. But she is not the longest-serving female senator in history. Feinstein would break that record, held by former Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, late next year.

Bears: Inflamation puzzling scientists From Page One tion, which biologists in California and Nevada have been documenting in the region’s black bears since 2014. Bears normally shy away from humans. Even the densely populated bears in the Tahoe Basin that have lost much of their fear of humans and saunter down residential streets usually still take off when approached. But these sick young bears don’t run away. The most recent bear to come down with the condition was a 21-pound female that biologists captured last fall in Pollock Pines. The sickly, confused bear showed no fear of the humans who took pity on it and began feeding it. At one point, it hopped into an open car trunk, state wildlife officials said. The bear, which should have weighed close to 80 pounds for its age, was covered in ticks when it was eventually captured and taken to the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s wildlife investigation lab. Like almost all of the bears captured with the same symptoms, which include head tremors and a subtle head tilt, the bear was so sickly, veterinarians had to put it down.

People not considered at risk, scientists say The bears with the inflamed brains have been found on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe and as far away as Humboldt County.

Young black bears around California are exhibiting dangerous behavior, like fearlessness around humans, due to a mysterious lethal condition. The new viruses in some of the affected bears don’t appear to pose a risk to people, said Jamie Sherman, a veterinarian at UC Davis’ One Health Institute who’s studied bear diseases. So far, whatever is sickening these bears also seems to have had little effect on California’s growing black bear population, which in 1982 was estimated to be between 10,000 and 15,000 bears, and is now conservatively estimated to be between 30,000 and 40,000 animals. Black bears are not endangered. The Tahoe region has some of the largest bear densities in the nation, and they live year-round alongside the vacation homes and campsites seeking human food and garbage. The bears, which have increasingly been ran-

sacking homes looking for easy meals, have a devoted local fanbase. The bears in Tahoe are so frequently seen, local animal lovers give them names and sometimes hold vigils when they die. Sherman said that could be why many of the bears with brain inflammation are turning up in the Lake Tahoe region – symptomatic bears could simply be spotted and reported to biologists more often, unlike a bear in the woods that gets sick and dies far from people. “What wildlife managers think about a lot is, when you’re in an area where animals are very charismatic, as well as having a high human population that’s invested in that population, the symptoms are more likely to be seen,” she said. But that being said, Sherman did caution that

the way the bears live in the Tahoe Basin – lots of bears living in close proximity, sharing bodily fluids at the same food sources – are the sorts of conditions that allow diseases to spread faster among a population. That they live close to humans also increases the possible risk of a virus jumping the species barrier, a concern that became much more in the public consciousness after early reports linked the virus that causes Covid-19 with Chinese “wet markets,” places where wildlife are bought and sold. But Sherman said a recent study on the bear disease found little risk of that so far. “The viruses that they detected in these bears were not ones particularly known to affect humans,” Sherman said.

Trial: Poses questions about US’s future From Page One African American and African Studies. “Yes, Chauvin is on trial, and it’s about the Floyd murder. . . . But an argument can be made it’s about all the other folks that didn’t receive justice, too. That’s why a conviction is necessary for us to reimagine what a future can look like, because these cases continue to happen until the police are thoroughly reformed.” Still, while some look at Chauvin as emblematic of law enforcement as an institution that’s misguided at best or racist at worst, others see what happened last Memorial Day as an anomaly: that Floyd’s death was the rare exception instead of proof that police are the bad guys. “I try in my head to better understand that broad-brush mentality, but I have a hard time,” said Tim Leslie, the Dakota County sheriff. “If a plumber gets arrested for DUI, are all plumbers drunks? If a pilot crashes a plane, are all pilots incompetent? No. Yet Chauvin does that, he murders somebody, and all law enforcement needs to be reformed. Is that the same?”

History on video When Mayes saw the Floyd video, the 53-year-old professor had a visceral reaction: What if that were me? “You almost see yourself lying on the ground with the police officer’s knee on your own neck,” Mayes said. “You can’t help but … be engulfed in this kind of anger and rage and disappointment in the system that continues to allow this to happen.” Growing up in Harlem, Mayes had two distinct types of interactions with police: One with housing police, who were familiar and respectful, and the other with city police, who were feared. Decades later, even as an author with an Ivy League degree, those feelings linger.

After Floyd’s death, Mayes joined protests and paid respects at 38th and Chicago. That’s how he processed it: by sharing his grief with the grief of the community. He thought about George Floyd, but he also thought about Philando Castile, and Jamar Clark, and Amadou Diallo, the Guinean immigrant killed by New York police while Mayes lived in New York. “I put this incident along this spectrum of other incidents,” he said, “where police either assaulted or killed Black people. And they just get stacked up.”

Heroes or villains For police officers, the national debate about where the profession falls short has often felt jarring and unfair. “We’ve disappointed some of our constituency – that’s the bottom line,” said Leslie, the sheriff in Dakota County. “We have to take a look in the mirror and figure that out.” The past year has been an emotional whirlwind for police. When the Covid-19 pandemic began, they were painted as heroes; after Floyd died, they were painted as villains. Leslie has tried to think deeply about the issues Floyd’s death brought up. He’s read books such as “How to Be an Antiracist” and “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man.” He’s hired a community outreach and equity coordinator, and he’s focused more on deputies’ mental health. But Leslie has been in law enforcement for four decades. He knows innumerable police officers who went into the field for honorable reasons. He knows policing is an emotional profession to begin with: seeing dead bodies, dealing with people in crisis, always remaining on edge. The past year has made it more so.

“We’re in a really tough spot right now,” he said. “We’re supposed to deal with people with mental illness, chemical addiction, all sorts of family drama, poverty, undereducated. These are not police problems. These are social problems. We’re trying to be everything for everyone, and I’m not sure we’re able to do that without disappointing some people sometimes.”

Global impact Chauvin’s knee became a symbol of Black oppression worldwide: in Australia and Japan, in France and Germany, in Kazakhstan and Indonesia. The case “has really become a global indictment of police forces,” said Brenda Stevenson, a professor of history and African American studies at UCLA. “This is now representative of what happens everywhere – at least, that’s what many people believe. . . . People are really watching to see if the U.S. can get it right this time.” Thabi Myeni, a 23-year-old law student in Johannesburg, South Africa, had been to plenty of protests before last spring – mostly over racial equity in tuition fees. When Myeni saw the video of Floyd’s death, she thought it would be another example of racial injustice going unnoticed. “I had no idea it would spark a global movement,” she said. What changed for her was when South Africa’s ruling party decried Floyd’s killing as a “heinous murder.” It struck Myeni as hypocrisy. While Americans protested Floyd’s death, South Africans were protesting the death of a man named Collins Khosa. Khosa lived in Johannesburg’s poor Alexandria township, and he was beaten to death by soldiers who said Khosa had been drinking alcohol in public, a violation of Covid-19 lockdown rules.

Alabama Crimson Tide guard Jaden Shackelford (5) is stripped of a ball by UCLA Bruins guard Johnny Juzang (3) during the Sweet Sixteen round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Sunday.

Turning the tide

Hours after the Giants made three cuts that appeared to firm up their Opening Day roster plans, infielder Tommy La Stella was forced to exit Sunday’s 9-3 exhibition loss against the Oakland A’s shortly after being hit by a pitch. After showing bunt in an 0-1 count, La Stella took a third inning breaking ball from A’s starter Daulton Jeffries off of his lower left leg and hobbled down to first base. The versatile infielder initially stayed in the game, but was removed from the game by manager Gabe Kapler after he was slow to get up following an effort to break up a 6-4-3 double play hit by Donovan Solano.

Kapler said postgame La Stella was diagnosed with a “left knee contusion” and will be listed as day-to-day. “It was sore as he was running and we just wanted to get him out of there,” Kapler said. “He said he could continue playing and my feeling is if you’re not 100%, there’s no reason to continue playing.” If La Stella’s injury turns out to be more serious, the team will have to reconsider what its initial 26-man roster will look like. Solano and Wilmer Flores would likely see more playing time if La Stella misses any regular season games. Prior to Sunday’s game, the Giants optioned outfielder and See Giants, Page B8

UCLA shocks Alabama in overtime Los Angeles Times The runaway finish was set up by some crazy momentum swings, a wild back-and-forth battle that none of the breathless fans wanted to end. UCLA has this game! No, wait, Alabama isn’t going away! In a lopsided overtime, there was no doubt. It was all Bruins. an NCAA tournament East Region semifinal. When it was over, the Bruins on the way to their first regional final since 2008, point guard Tyger Campbell thrust a

finger into the air, shooting guard David Singleton triumphantly flipped away the basketball before leading his teammates in another celebratory dance and coach Mick Cronin

pounded his chest with a clenched fist and pointed at his father Hep high in the stands. Singleton had opened the scoring in overtime with a three-pointer and Campbell followed with a steal and a layup after pump-faking his defender into the air past him. Soon there was a spirited “U-C-L-A!” chant breaking out high in the rafters of the old barn and UCLA was on its way to its deepest run in this tournament since the end of its three consecutive runs of Final Fours in 2008. Stanford women reach Elite 8 San Francisco Chronicle After Stanford topped Oklahoma State by 11 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night, head coach Tara VanDerveer said her team thought it had played its “C” game. What the Cardinal did to Missouri State in the Sweet 16 on Sunday afternoon in San Antonio surely must have represented Stanford’s “A” game, right? Stanford overwhelmed a team that had won its previous 19 games and was the No. 5 seed in the Alamo Region. The Cardinal cruised 89-62, advancing to the Elite Eight for the 21st time. VanDerveer still wouldn’t hand out a top grade. “For our overall team, I would say a ‘B,’” VanDerveer said in her postgame Zoom news conference, “but I thought we had an absolute

‘A’ game from Anna Wilson. An ‘A’ for Anna. I thought she really came to play.” A fifth-year senior guard, Wilson went 5-for-6 from the floor en route to 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and was the prime reason Stanford held Brice Calip, the Missouri Valley Conference’s Player of the Year, to nine points on 3-for-10 shooting. Wilson also wouldn’t deem Stanford’s performance as its best. “I still don’t think we’re playing our best basketball yet,” the sister of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said. “We’re playing really well. We’re clicking in a lot of different ways ... but I think that each player has a lot more to give to the team. I have more to give to the team.” Stanford (28-2), the top overall seed, extended its winning streak to 17 games.

On Tuesday, there will be a Cardinals-Cardinal matchup in the Alamo Region final. Louisville, the 2 seed, got 29 points from Dana Evans to put away sixth-seeded Oregon 60-42. Two years ago, Stanford outlasted Missouri State 55-46 in the Sweet 16 as each team shot 25% from the floor. VanDerveer had described that game as like getting a root canal. On Sunday, Stanford upped its field-goal percentage to 46.5 (33for-71), but the Lady Bears (23-3) still shot 31.3% (20-for-64). “This game was fun,” VanDerveer said. “It was really fun to see people get out in transition. We made it an up-tempo game. I like that. . . . Are there things we could have done better? Yes, but . . . it was not a root canal, for sure.” See Stanford, Page B8

A crewmember cleans the windshield of the #52 Halmar International Toyota, driven by Stewart Friesen during qualifying for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, Saturday.

Rain postpones NASCAR dirt race at Bristol Tribune Content Agency BRISTOL, Tenn. — NASCAR has postponed its Cup Series dirt race at Bristol until 4 p.m. Monday, citing overnight heavy rainfall and local flood warnings, safety concerns and a menacing Sunday forecast at Bristol Motor Speedway. The historic Food City Dirt Race, an event that will mark the first time NASCAR’s Cup Series races on dirt in 51 years, was originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on FOX. The race will be delayed a day and and is scheduled to air on FOX, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

The Truck Series race, the Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt, will now take place before the Cup race on Monday at 12 p.m. That race will be broadcast on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Scattered showers continued around the track Sunday afternoon. Images shared on social media Sunday morning showed significant rainfall around the half-mile speedway in Bristol, Tenn. “This was a small creek yesterday,” Daniel Baldwin said in a video he posted Twitter around 8:30 a.m. Sunday of a flooded speedway parking lot.

US men’s soccer fails to qualify for Olympics – again Los Angeles Times Three times in the leadup to the last three Olympic Games, the U.S. went into its final match of qualifying needing just one goal to keep alive its hopes of playing in the men’s tournament. And for the third time the U.S. came up one goal short Sunday, losing to Honduras 2-1 in a chippy, physical semifinal of the CONCACAF pre-Olympic tournament on a warm 90-degree afternoon in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The win sends Honduras on to the Summer Games for a fourth straight time while the Americans, who haven’t qualified since 2008, will have to wait three years for another chance. “We’re devastated,” U.S. coach Jason Kreis said. Mexico met Canada in the other semifinal Sunday with CONCACAF’s second berth in the Tokyo Olympics on the line. This time the Americans were done in by some of their own, with Juan Carlos Obregón, who was born in New York and

played college soccer in the U.S., and Luis Enrique Palma, who once played for Real Salt Lake’s USL affiliate, scoring Honduras’ goals on either side of half time. Both goals bounced in off U.S. goalkeeper David Ochoa. Jackson Yueill halved the deficit in the 52nd minute with a right-footed strike from distance and the U.S. nearly pulled even 10 minutes after that, but Jonathan Lewis’ header from the center of the box was cleared off the line by defender Wesly Decas.

The qualifying tournament, like the Tokyo Olympics, was delayed a year by COVID-19, giving Kreis an extra 12 months to prepare. It didn’t seem to help as the Americans were outshot in three of their four qualifiers, scored just one first-half goal in the tournament and didn’t even put a shot on target Sunday until Yueill’s goal in the 52nd minute. Honduras, playing for the fourth time in 10 days, opened the scoring four minutes into first-half stoppage time.

Food chat

Blooming greens make for delicious pesto bases The Washington Post The Washington Post Food staff, cookbook author Naz Deravian and her collaborator chef Hanif Sadr of Komaaj in San Francisco recently answered questions about all things edible. Here are edited excerpts from that chat. Q: We’ve just started to grow arugula from seed in our home garden, and after 3 days it’s germinated: I have a feeling this is going to be good! In about a month, we’ll be looking at more arugula than I’ve dealt with before. I can use it in salads, and for garnish in various ways, but it’s not going to stay saladlevel fresh for long, so what else? Arugula . . . pesto? Wilt it and add to pasta? I can treat it a bit like baby spinach, but it’s very peppery. A: All of the suggestions you listed are what I would have recommended. If you find it too peppery, you can try to balance it out with sweetness (sugar, honey, agave, etc.) to see if that works. — Aaron Hutcherson

Q: Jicama wraps were billed as being a substitute for tortillas, but, upon closer inspection, the package says they are like a cross between an apple and a water chestnut. So, other than being round and thin and flexible, that doesn’t seem much like a tortilla. Any recommendations on how to use them? A: They’re not going to taste anything like a tortilla, no, but honestly jicama is delicious and you could definitely still fill them as you would tacos and enjoy. You could also use them as a wrapper for summer rolls instead of rice paper. — Kari Sonde

Q: Other than rinsing and drying right after use, do you have any tips on keeping peelers sharp, or are they just one of those things that you need to replace periodically? A: I am sure there are handy people out there who say they can sharpen peelers, but I’m not one of them. After a while, I do think the best option is to just replace once they start feeling dull and slipping around rather than peeling. Another thing to do is to keep it from banging around against other tools (easier said than done, if you keep them in the miscellany drawer). And hang on to or purchase a plastic sheath for the blade. — Becky Krystal

Q: Hi! Do you have any suggestions for how I can subtly introduce friends or family members to the taste of kashk? I know some picky eaters who otherwise wouldn’t be so adventurous. Thank you. A: You can start with smaller amounts and/or mix it with yogurt to use for dips or soups. — Naz Deravian

A: You can use kashk like a cream in your savory braise or stews.

Earn brownie points

Bananas and peanut butter make the “king” of brownies super tasty without making them greasy.

here are brownies, and then there is the king of brownies. I’m talking about ones with bananas and peanut butter that would get Elvis Presley’s blessings. The signature trademark of a good classic brownie is that it should be chewy, gooey and not overbaked. It does not have to be fancy and topped with swirls or glazes. Nor does it need to feature hard-to-find ingredients. A recipe free of fuss will be just fine. If it has a nice sheen, that’s great. If it is a crackly top, that is great, too. And if it strikes the right balance between chewy, cakey and fudgy and has a deep chocolate flavor, that’s the best. I like a fudgy brownie but not one that is so ridiculously rich that I can’t even get halfway through it. Or I have to wash it down with cold milk or water. At the same time, I am not crazy about thick cakey brownies where the flour dominates. A brownie also needs to be one that is intensely chocolaty but not bitter. One that is sweet but won’t hurt my teeth. And one that can remain moist even after a couple of days. It’s easy to overbake brownies as it is often hard to tell when they are done. The usual visual cues that indicate something is browned enough on top don’t work here because the brownies are already, well, brown. Determining the doneness through the aroma can be tricky, too. The best way to check for doneness is to insert a toothpick or a cake tester in the center of the brownies. If the tester comes out with a few moist crumbs

sticking to it, the brownies are baked perfectly. On the other hand, if it comes out clean, they have been overbaked. The sky’s the limit when it comes to the add-ins. Nuts, chocolate chunks, dried fruits, mint chips, coconut flakes and cream cheese work well when mixed into the batter, and so do pretzels, graham crackers and marshmallows. Salt accentuates the sweetness, so be sure to add a dash of it in the batter. For a hint of spice, a little bit of ancho chili powder or cayenne pepper can do wonders. There are add-ins I avoid at all costs, and curry powder, potato chips and bacon are among them. They are just not my type of flavoring for brownies. Also, when things like matcha are added, I think it is just plain wrong to call it a brownie anymore. In “Flavor for All: Everyday Recipes and Creative Pairings” by James Briscione and Brooke Parkhurst, a recipe that is boldly titled “The King” of Brownies caught my eye. Like the famed Elvis sandwich, the brownies call for bananas and peanut butter that act as both moistening and flavoring agents. Chocolate chips are melted with butter and brown sugar and blended with bananas, flour and cocoa powder. After the batter is poured into a prepared pan, spoonfuls of peanut butter are dropped on top and then dragged with a butter knife to create swirls. After about 25 minutes in a 350degree oven, the brownies turn not chewy, but super soft. And they are rich but not greasy. Although the banana and peanut butter flavors are unmistakable they don’t smack you in your face. They are the kind of brownies you can go bananas or nuts over. And who knows? The king of rock ‘n’ roll might have, too,

if he knew about it. ‘THE KING’ OF BROWNIES Makes 16 brownies The bananas and peanut butter are moistening and flavoring agents here, making the brownies super soft. Then there is the mesmerizing aroma. While the banana-y presence is unmistakable, it does not smack in your face. 2 ripe bananas 1 large egg 1 cup packed light brown sugar, divided 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips ¾ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup creamy peanut butter Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-9-inch baking pan. Combine the banana, egg, ½ cup of brown sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Combine the remaining ½ cup brown sugar and butter in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the sugar has melted. Remove from the heat. Add chocolate chips and stir until smooth. Beat the butter-chocolate mixture into the banana mixture. Add the flour and cocoa and stir to combine. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan. Drop spoonfuls of peanut butter over the top of the batter and then drag a butter knife through it to create swirls. Bake for about 25 minutes, until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out slightly moist. Let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares. Store in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. Q: Whenever I cut almost any veg, a good portion of the freshly cut veg sticks to my knife. What am I doing wrong? Or what am I not doing that I should? A: You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s really just the smooth knife! Some knives have those divots on the side of the blade to try to prevent it, but I’m not a huge fan and not convinced it makes a difference. Just brush off (carefully) what’s stuck and forge on. — B.K.

y father’s favorite soup was potato, and my daughters have inherited his love for it. Every Wednesday when they were in high school, I would buy them a quart of potato soup from a local restaurant. Even today, after they have moved out of the house, I still send them a batch on occasion. (It’s a Mom thing!) This potato soup recipe is perfect for these evenings when there is a chill in the air as we await spring. Even though the soup includes milk and a touch of half-andhalf, there’s enough chicken stock in the broth to make it taste quite light. Soups were made to be garnished, so this recipe has a couple tasty add-ins – crumbled blue cheese for a bit of tang and crispy bacon for a smoky, salty finish. I served it with Irish soda bread in observation of St. Patrick’s Day two weeks ago, but any crusty, high-quality bread will add to your dunking pleasure. It also will help in sopping up the last

Potato soup made with shredded cheddar and Irish Red ale is perfect for any day you want something sumptuous. couple of drops in the bowl. I like to mash half the potatoes before stirring in the milk and cheese. Leftovers can be refrigerated for two days, but it won’t freeze particularly well (the potatoes will turn mushy). POTATO SOUP WITH SHREDDED CHEDDAR Makes 8 servings 4 tablespoons butter, divided 2 cups chopped yellow onion

2 leeks, sliced and washed 8 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 (12-ounce) bottle Irish ale 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 3 tablespoons allpurpose flour 3 cups whole milk ½ cup half-and-half 8 ounces grated sharp cheddar

For optional garnishes Finely minced parsley 4 ounces crumbled blue cheese Crisp cooked bacon, crumbled Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a 6- to 8-quart stockpot. Add onion and leeks. Cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes until the vegetables are barely soft. Add potatoes, ale, stock and a pinch or two of salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, cover, and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 45 minutes. When soft, mash about half of the potatoes with a masher or fork and leave the rest whole. Melt remaining butter in a medium saucepan. Gradually add flour, whisking until smooth. Cook 3 minutes on medium-low heat, stirring constantly, to remove the raw taste. Slowly stir in milk and half-and-half, whisking until hot and thickened. Add cheddar cheese and stir until melted. Stir cheese and milk mixture into potato mixture until well combined. Cook over very low heat for 10 minutes until soup is heated through. Ladle into soup bowls and sprinkle with parsley, blue cheese and bacon, if desired. Adapted from jamesbeard.org.

Claire Danes in “My So-Called Life.”

Reliving ‘My SoCalled Life,’ 1 of best shows ever Neal Justin

Star Tribune, (TNS)

We’re in an era when shows about teenagers are all the rage. That wasn’t always the case. The few series that took a stab at accurately depicting high school – “Room 222,” “The Bronx Zoo,” “Freak and Geeks,” “The White Shadow” – were often critically acclaimed but short-lived. None was better than “My So-Called Life.” The series, which recently became available on Hulu, is best known today for introducing the world to Claire Danes and Jared Leto. But the show’s keen eye for casting wasn’t its only strength. I was out of college when the show premiered on ABC in 1994, but I could still recognize the characters from my own school days: the mopey teen who refused to eat a balanced meal because it would please her mother too much. The nerd next door who’s a whiz in geometry and a dunce in relationships. The rebel who masks her insecurities behind fake bravado and a bottle of booze. Their conversations in the restroom between classes and over landline phones sounded authentic: incoherent babbling with occasional bursts of poetry. (No show has ever used “like” and “whatever” more effectively.) “School is a battlefield,” Danes’ 15-year-old Angela Chase shares in a voice-over from the first episode.

“For your heart.” Much of the series, also available at abc. com, deals with Angela’s obsession with Jordan Catalano, played by Leto. He must have prepared for the role by studying James Dean’s wincing. Her hormones have her alternatively on the verge of tears or laughing with the kind of commitment you wish Leto would have given to the Joker in “Suicide Squad.” Now that I’m old enough to have teenagers of my own, I find myself relating more and more to Bess Armstrong’s character and her relationship with her husband, played by Tom Irwin. They’re so worried about Angela they routinely ignore their younger daughter, who seems destined for a lifetime of psychiatric appointments. They’re also panicked about their marriage, although both are too suburban to say it out loud. In the series finale, Dad appears to be on the verge of an affair. We never learn if he followed through. The show was canceled due to low ratings and Danes’ reluctance to return. But I suspect she also wanted to move on because channeling Chase was just, like, hard. Or whatever. Being a teenager is tough enough. Portraying an authentic one on TV must have been torture. Her pain is our gain. If you’ve never seen “My So-Called Life,” now is the time. It’s a class act.

Jamie Foxx accepts Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for “Just Mercy” onstage during

the 51st NAACP Image Awards, Presented by BET, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Feb. 22, 2020.

NAACP Image Awards have been celebrating Black art for years; Hollywood is just catching up Los Angeles Times Six years ago, the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag shone a light on the lack of recognition and opportunities for artists of color in the film industry. This year, the Oscars had a record number of performers of color nominated in the four acting categories (nine out of 20 nominees). But even if performers of color continue to see gains in representation among the other awards shows, Kyle Bowser, senior vice president of the NAACP Hollywood bureau, says there will never be a substitute for Black art and artists being celebrated by their own community. “I think it’s always going to be important for the African American community to turn inward and pay tribute to the achievements that we make in the arts,” Bowser said. “Other awards shows becoming more inclusive and starting to recognize our contributions is going to be a wonderful thing as well, but I don’t know that it’s going to put us out of business. There’s always going to be a need for us to celebrate our own and that’s really what the Image Awards is about.” Following a year punctuated by a pandemic and worldwide calls for racial equity, the televised portion of this year’s NAACP Image Awards, airing on CBS, BET and several other CBSViacom cable networks Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, will focus on themes of social justice and unity through a hybrid of live and prerecorded content. “In response to the events of 2020, the NAACP has decided to reinforce what has been our historical focus on social justice, civil rights, diversity, equal-

ity and inclusion,” said Bowser. “You will see traces of that in this year’s Image Awards, and it’s a tradition that we plan to continue in years to come.” “It’s been a year like none other,” said NAACP Vice Chair Karen Boykin-Towns. “Quite frankly, it was about trying to bring forth a show that continued to reflect the Black experience, but also gives voice to the experience that we’ve all lived through for the past year. So one of the things you’ll see is some of the categories being announced from some of our most iconic landmarks around the country – from New York, Atlanta, D.C. [and] LA – and so that is a way to sort of bring us together.” This year’s awards proceedings kicked off Monday with a virtual experience that included a virtual red carpet, a web series, panel talks and a nontelevised awards ceremony. The events will conclude with an after party Saturday broadcast live on BET, a robust roster of programming in spite of the technical setbacks created by the pandemic. “As producers of the program, it has been a challenge for us being able to work the logistic within a Covid environment,” said Bowser. “We of course watched other [awards] shows, and we saw some elements that worked really well and some that weren’t as effective and kind of took our own path. But by the time the awards [ceremonies] started to air, we had pretty much already decided the direction we would take, and I think we nailed it.” The show will feature seven competitive categories and pretaped performances from Jazmine Sullivan and Maxwell (the awards presentations them-

selves have been prerecorded, though winners’ reactions will be captured live from their homes). Special honorees include LeBron James, who will take home the President’s Award, and Eddie Murphy, who will be honored with a Hall of Fame trophy. This year’s nominees for best motion picture are “Bad Boys For Life,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night In Miami...,” while films recognized in other categories include “The FortyYear-Old Version,” “Sylvie’s Love,” “The Old Guard,” “Soul,” “The Banker” and the documentary “John Lewis: Good Trouble.” (The Image Awards’ eligibility period spanned the calendar year 2020, which means the February-released best picture Oscar nominee “Judas and the Black Messiah” won’t be eligible until next year.) “Really amazing work was released during challenging circumstances this year,” said Boykin-Towns. “There’s no denying the quality of the work, so [we’re] really looking forward to seeing who the winners are. “Last year was a tremendously tough year, and I think that, particularly for our community which has been disproportionately impacted, to be able to have an evening where we are able to see joy and excellence and realize that we’re still here [is uplifting],” she added. “With Black Twitter being what it is and being able to commune around our social media platforms to really celebrate and cheer on those who are being recognized is really important and something that we really need.”

Failure of the Bidder or a listed Subcontractor to be registered at the time of bidding shall render the Bid nonresponsive and unavailable for award. Belt didn’t make his Cactus League debut until pinch-hitting on Wednesday against San Diego as he was rehabbing a right heel injury while recovering from bouts with Covid-19 and mononucleosis, but he’s reported feeling healthy and has said recently that playing Thursday’s seasonopener in Seattle remains a goal of his. “We feel pretty confident that assuming we don’t have any setbacks, Brandon is going to be on our Opening Day roster and we feel pretty good about that at his point,”

From Page B1 The Bruins (21-9) will need more magic against top-seeded Michigan on Tuesday at Lucas Oil Stadium after dispatching the Crimson Tide (26-7) with tough defense and smart playmaking after some extended cold shooting stretches in the second half. The finish was all preceded by a crazy end to regulation. One moment, Singleton is headed to the free-throw line to give his team a three-point lead and Hep Cronin is shown pumping his fist on the video scoreboard. The next, Alabama’s Alex Reese sinks a three-pointer over the outstretched arm of Cody Riley with four-tenths of a second left, prompting his teammates to swarm him. It looked like the Bruins might be headed to victory in regulation after Campbell drove toward the basket and leaped into the air, passing the ball to Riley for a layup that gave UCLA a one-point lead with 15 seconds left. There was more elation after the Crimson Tide’s Herbert Jones Jr. missed two free throws with 6.8 seconds left. UCLA’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. snagged the rebound and passed to Singleton, who was fouled with 4.2 seconds to go. Alabama had gone ahead, 62-61, with

36 seconds left after Jaquez stepped in front of Herbert Jones and was called for a block. Jones missed the first free throw but made the second to give his team the one-point lead. Riley had given the Bruins a 60-58 lead with less than four minutes left on a putback, and he had a chance to extend the advantage when he rose for a jump hook that bounced out of the rim. But Alabama countered with John Petty’s jump hook and went ahead, 61-60, when Herbert Jones made one of two free throws. Campbell had a chance to put the Bruins back ahead when he was fouled, but the front end of his one-and-one opportunity rolled around the rim before falling off. The Bruins forced a turnover to get the ball back, still down by a point with 1:54 left, but Jaquez missed a tough turnaround jumper on the baseline. Riley got his team another possession when he blocked Juwan Gary’s layup and grabbed the ball, allowing Cronin to call timeout with exactly one minute left to set up a play. His team wouldn’t let him down. Jaquez and Jules Bernard finished with 17 points each to lead the Bruins, who prevailed despite shooting only 27.3% in the second half and making just one of 12 three-pointers.

smartly ran down the clock, then Ashten Prechtel – at the top of the key – found Jump wide open in the lane. Jump converted the layup just before the buzzer. After the game, Wilson was asked if she and her teammates feel pressure to get VanDerveer her third national title and first since 1992. “This is an opportunity for us to do something really special,” Wilson said. “Pressure is people

who are struggling for this past year in regular life, (with) Covid and all of the other viruses that are in our world. “I think for us, it’s really an opportunity to go out there and just finish our season the way that we expect to finish it.” Stanford sophomore Fran Belibi, who dunked in games at Cal and at UCLA in December, had a breakaway early in the fourth quarter, but settled for a layup.

action. A day after righthander Kevin Gausman threw a simulated game for his final spring tuneup, Johnny Cueto followed, giving left-hander Conner Menez an opportunity to face Oakland. “He got through it clean,” Kapler said of Cueto’s outing in which he appeared in six simulated innings. “I’d call it a professional outing.” Kapler has said the Giants like simulated games because they maintain the ability to control how hard their pitchers are working and how many pitches they’re throwing in each inning. The Giants will hold an intrasquad game Tuesday in Scottsdale before departing for Seattle where they will hold an optional workout on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park.

marked the first time Stanford had trailed since its Pac-12 semifinal win over Oregon State on March 5. The Cardinal didn’t trail for long. A turnaround jumper by Cameron Brink and a layup by Lexie Hull made it 4-2, Cardinal. Stanford led the rest of the afternoon. The half ended on a shining example of Stanford’s well-run offense. decisions depend on how Kapler and president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi plan to structure the bullpen. One of their top non-roster hopefuls, right-hander Zack Littell, threw a scoreless inning in Sunday’s game against Oakland. Littell has four consecutive scoreless appearances, but is battling with impressive long relief candidate Nick Tropeano and another righty, hard-throwing veteran Dominic Leone, for the chance to break camp with the team. The Giants may keep more than one of their non-roster invitees, but doing so would require the team to clear multiple 40-man roster spots. Kapler said Sunday. Wade would likely be a top candidate to make the roster if La Stella requires a stint on the injured list, but infielder Jason Vosler may also be a fit if the Giants want someone whose defensive profile resembles what La Stella offers the club. Aside from optioning Wade, the Giants also reassigned pitchers Scott Kazmir and Shun Yamaguchi to minor league camp, leaving San Francisco with 31 players heading into Monday’s final exhibition game. “I certainly feel confident that they are both major league contributors at some point during the season,” Kapler said of the pitchers. The Giants must trim their roster to 26 prior to their first regular season game, and most of their
