Going back to her roots

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden on Sunday issued an executive order mandating federal departments and agencies increase efforts to help Americans register to vote, as the White House looks for ways to offset Republican efforts to toughen voting standards. The executive action taken Sunday directs federal facilities to accept requests from states – which run their own voter processes – to become registration sites, and calls for a modernization of the Vote.gov website. The effort aims “to make it easier for eligible voters to register to vote, and improve access to voting,” Biden said in taped remarks to the annual See Voting, Page A8

Armijo grad returns as Tolenas’ winemaker

Amy Maginnis-Honey

She returned to Suisun Valley six years ago and now serves as lead winemaker at Tolenas Winery. The house she grew up in – her parents are Steve and Linda Tenbrink – sits next to the winery. A Grape Collective study in 2011 found only 10% of California wineries had a woman who held the lead position. Another study last year found a modest increase to 14%. The Suisun Valley had changed upon Howard's return.

SUISUN VALLEY — Lisa Howard wanted to run away as fast and as far as she could after finishing up at Armijo High School. She went to Cal Poly and earned an engineering degree. She ended up in Arizona building large irrigation systems for farmers. It was then her husband told her she was a "fish out of water."

There was a strategic plan in place and wine grapes had replaced the stone fruit. Under the guidance of her parents, Howard and her husband, Cliff Howard, began to make wine, making them the second generation to do so. "Growing up surrounded by farmland, we knew the hardship and sacrifice that cultivating grapes required," they share on the winery's website. "Nevertheless, we felt driven to abandon the safety of our

careers for a chance to cultivate our shared passion here, among the hills of the Suisun Valley. Just like Lisa, our three kids are learning the land as they grow alongside the grapes in the Tolenas vineyards." There are many women winemakers, Howard said. Not all earn the honor of being the lead winemaker, she said. Female winemakers can pick up more flavors and See Roots, Page A8
