Fairfield council to consider retail marijuana permits Todd R. Hansen

FAIRFIELD — The approval of two cannabis retail permits will be considered by the City Council when it meets virtually at 6 p.m. Tuesday. There are five applicants for the two permits. The two potential vendors that scored the highest in the application steps were Responsible & Compliant Retail Fairfield LLC, which proposes a location of 180 Serrano, Suite A, and East of Eden North Bay LLC, which proposes a location at 1740 Travis Blvd. The other applicants are Element 7 Fairfield LLC (2320 Courage Drive); FWC Inc.

(150 Alaska Ave.); and Authentic Fairfield LLC (2470 Martin Road). All five applicants scored above 91% on the city’s evaluation scale. “If the city were to issue the two retail and one manufacturing commercial cannabis business permits available, the anticipated tax revenue generated is estimated to be between $265,000 to $385,000 annually. This estimate assumes an average of $3 million in gross receipts for two retailers and $1 million for a manufacturer,” the staff report to the council states. However, the action before the council does not mention the manufacturer’s permit. Among the other issues before the council is a zoning change

request, from limited industrial to neighborhood commercial, on two parcels located at the southwest corner of Peabody and Cement Hill roads. The public session follows a closed session at 5 p.m., during which the council will conduct a performance evaluation of the city manager, will be updated on labor negotiations, and will review a potential matter of litigation and a workers’ compensation matter in litigation. NEW YORK — Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine was cleared for use in the U.S., making a third shot available that could plug gaps in the nation’s immunization campaign as concern grows over an influx of virus variants. The Food and Drug Administration said in a statement on Saturday that it had granted an emergency-use authorization for the single-dose vaccine for people 18 and older. The decision comes after the U.S. hit a sad milestone with 500,000 Americans dead from the virus, and at a time when health officials are raising alarms that recent declines in the number of new cases may be stalling. The J&J shot is highly

FAIRFIELD — What cities and other local jurisdictions have made in cannabis-related taxes is not part of the nearly $2.1 billion collected by California since 2018. The state Department of Tax and Fee Administration reported Friday that the state collected $236.4 million from the pot industry in the final three months of 2020, though that number is expected to go up when late reporting allowed due to Covid-19 comes in. That fourth-quarter figure rep-

resents $123.4 million in excise tax, $31.6 million in cultivation tax and $81.4 million in sales tax, the agency reported. Overall, the state has collected $2.07 billion since 2018. “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all but the largest taxpayers were given a three-month extension to file their fourth quarter 2020 tax returns with (California Department of Tax and Fee Administration),” the agency said in a statement. “These returns are now due on April 30, 2021. Revisions to fourth quarter 2020 data are expected in mid-May after the

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden called on lawmakers to quickly approve his $1.9 trillion Covid-19 aid package, which passed the House of Representatives early Saturday and heads to the Senate. “It’s time to act,” Biden said in brief remarks Saturday at the White House, adding that an “overwhelming” percentage of the Americans support the legislation. “We have no time to waste,” Biden said. “If we act now, decisively, quickly and boldly, we can finally get ahead of this virus, we can finally get our economy
