Solano reports just 46 new cases

WASHINGTON — After a widely panned opening-day performance by the legal team of former President Donald Trump, the Senate voted Tuesday that the Constitution allows for his impeachment trial to proceed for actions he committed while in office. The 56-44 vote clears the path for up to four days of arguments on whether Trump should be convicted for inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. House impeachment managers begin their case Wednesday.

The first day of the nation’s fourth presidential impeachment trial was dominated by the question of whether the proceeding was constitutional, since Trump is no longer in office. House Democrats argued that the Constitution gives the Senate authority to hold the trial of a former president because he is being tried for crimes allegedly committed while in office and because the House impeached him during his term. the county comes back Wednesday with a report of 150 cases, the two-day average would be 100. He said if there is going to be a spike from the Super Bowl, it will show up at the end of this week and into early next week. If the county can post a five-day daily case average below 110 cases, schools can reopen classes from transitional kindergarten to the sixth grade. “We have had a number of schools submit requests, but none of the big public (districts), Matyas said.

FAIRFIELD — Solano County had the lowest daily increase of confirmed novel coronavirus cases since Oct. 25 when the count was just below 41. It was 47 the next day. The reported number of new cases Tuesday was 46, taking the total since the Covid-19 pandemic started to 29,040. Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said the number is likely a reporting glitch from the state, but even if

He said the larger districts are still working out agreements with their teachers before they will open up the classrooms. Benicia Mayor Steve Young requested that the county make teachers a priority for vaccinations so the schools can open up sooner, but still safely. Matyas said the county is planning another mass vaccination event for the weekend at the fairgrounds in Vallejo, but the target population remains individuals See Cases, Page A10

Benicia mayor asks supervisors to move teachers to front of vaccination line Todd R. Hansen thansen@dailyrepublic.net

FAIR F IELD — Benicia Mayor Steve Young asked the Solano County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to move teachers to the front of the vaccination line so schools can open quickly and safely. “And the key, as I see it, and absolutely to do that, is being able to vaccinate each teacher and member of the (schools’)

staff, Young said. Educators are scheduled as part of the first tier of Phase 1B, the same as residents who are 65 to 74, agriculture workers, as well as child Young care and adult care workers. The county is currently working through the groups in the final tier of Phase 1A. Dr. Bela Matyas, the

county public health officer, said the next group of seniors need to be the top priority since 80% of the county’s Covidrelated deaths are residents who are 65 or older. “So if we want to make a dent in our fatalities, we have to focus on (residents) 65 and older, Matyas said in a phone interview after the board meeting. gressional Democrats had explored curtailing that benefit to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for married couples, a position embraced by Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a conservative Democrat. The broadening of stimulus check eligibility among middle class households is the latest sign that Democrats are moving ahead without Republican support on President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion economic relief package, which See Stimulus, Page A10
