FA I R F I E L D — January marked the 50th anniversary of the devastating oil spill that fouled the San Francisco Bay, killing thousands of seabirds. It was a tragic event that spawned the creation of a new branch of environmental science that continues to evolve today here in Solano County. Two Standard Oil tankers – the Arizona Standard and the Oregon Standard – collided in the bay near the Golden Gate Bridge on an early foggy morning, Jan. 18, 1971. The collision resulted in 800,000 gallons of caustic, sticky crude staining the bay and surrounding beaches and in
Solano urges state to go to risk-based Covid response county Asks for transmission data Daily Republic Staff

FAIRFIELD — Solano County this week sent a letter to the governor’s office and the state Department of Public Health seeking a “risk-based Covid-19 response – especially when it comes to local businesses. It is the third letter the county has sent to the governor – the first in July, the second in September – discussing the negative impacts on businesses and the lack of any evidence that businesses are spreading the disease. Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, also has reported the county has repeatedly made its position clear during discussions with the state. Since then and now, if anything, the state’s response tightened the grip on businesses and put more at risk of closing permanently. The latest letter begins by expressing the county’s appreciation for ending the stay-at-home order, which was based on intensive care unit capacity in state-drawn regions, and returning to the color-based tier system that relies on daily case and sevenday positivity testing rates. The letter states that returning Solano County to the purple
its wake, created a wildlife emergency like no other that led to the formation of International Bird Rescue in Berkeley. Only about 300 birds were successfully a nd rehabi l itated released – in part given the lack of established oiled bird rehabilitation practices at the time. Jay Holcomb, Bird Rescue’s longtime director – who died in 2014 – told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2012, “No one knew what to do. It was as horrible as you can imagine. . . . It was then that we realized there needs to be an organized attempt for their care. The spill affected at least 7,000 birds. Nearly See Rescue, Page A9
Trump’s trial to be held with signs of siege all around Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump’s Senate trial will be enveloped by a thick security cordon of razorwire-topped fencing, National Guard troops and armed police officers protecting lawmakers – a stark reminder of the violent assault on the Capitol that touched off his unprecedented second impeachment. Walkways and green spaces around the Capitol and adjacent congressional office buildings that are normally plied by tourists and joggers have been off limits since the Jan. 6 riot. Instead, there are rifletoting National Guard
troops – part of a contingent of several thousand assigned to assist with security – stationed with Capitol police at a checkpoints for entry to the grounds. In addition there are 500 members of the District of Columbia National Guard on standby as a quick reaction force. “It’s surreal, said Rep. Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat. “I’ve worked in a lot of tough areas before, it is very intense to see this level of structure with such a massive perimeter put forward. Scenes from the siege that triggered the extra security will play a major part in Trump’s Senate See Trial, Page A9

Some California churches will reopen Sunday after Supreme Court lifts ban Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — Some California churches on Saturday said they planned to reopen their doors this weekend after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the state’s ban on indoor worship services during the pandemic, ruling that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s strict orders appear to violate the Constitution’s protection of the free exercise of religion.
Bishop Arthur Hodges, senior pastor of South Bay United Pentecostal Church in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista, called the ruling “a major victory. “We are thrilled and excited to go back to church without legal threat of fines or arrest, Hodges said in a television interview broadcast on Fox 5. “And it opens up churches in the entire state of California. So this is a win for every church, every house of worship and
