LNU Fire zone residents face evacuation as storm nears of Emergency Services issued an evacuation warning shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday for all residents in the Hennessey Fire burn area. The alert warned residents about potential flash flooding and mudslides from the overnight storm that was forecast by the National Weather Service. PLEASANTS VALLEY — Residents forced last summer to flee for their lives as a wildfire bore down on them in the dark of night faced the prospects of another forced evacuation overnight Tuesday and early Wednesday. The cause: Heavy rains that could cause mudslides in the burn zone stripped of its vegetation. The Solano County Office

be coming this way, then an evacuation order could be issued overnight. However, he also noted that it will be up to area residents to be prepared and to leave ahead of the potential flash floods or mudslides, and not to expect emergency crews to come to their homes. That is especially true in areas where there is only a single escape route down the hill, Ryan said. “There is a lot of personal See Evacuation, Page A10

FAIRFIELD — A former candidate for the Vacaville City Council said the District 5 results could be in question due to how ballots were distributed for the Nov. 3 election. Amber Robitaille, who ran for the District 3 seat, told Solano County supervisors Tuesday that she believes as many as 78 voters received the wrong ballots, which could affect an outcome in which the two candidates were separated by 73 votes. Jason Roberts defeated Sherie Mahlberg with 3,668 votes to 3,595 votes,

according to the certified election results. Robitaille’s comments came during a report from the Registrar of Voters Office on some election mapping and ballot concerns she raised at previous board meetings – largely focused on District 3. Robitaille did not challenge the results of that election. But she did want the See Elections, Page A8

FAIRFIELD — A letter calling for the state to allow more Solano County businesses to open and to reduce other restrictions is going to Gov. Gavin Newsom. Despite the state on Monday lifting the regional stay-at-home health order and returning to the color-based tier system, county officials do not think that goes far enough.

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday directed County Administrator Birgitta Corsello to pen a "strongly worded" letter stating the county wants more control over how to manage businesses during the novel coronavirus pandemic. "I think we need to send a very strong message to the governor to stop closing businesses that are not contributing to (the spread of the See Control, Page A8

FAIRFIELD — The local recovery costs for the LNU Lightning Complex Fire is up to $9.76 million, of which $610,200 is Solano County’s share. That is a general fund cost. The county also expects to lose revenues due to waiving or lowering certain permit fees in the recovery and rebuild-

ing stages. For example, there is $28,653 that would have typically been collected for the 53 temporary power poles and 14 temporary emergency dwellings that have been set up. Super v isor Jim Spering said those lost revenues should instead be considered investments into the county. The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday extended See LNU, Page A8

Senate Republicans back effort to declare impeachment trial illegal Los Angeles Times WASHINGTON — Moments after senators were sworn in Tuesday as jurors in former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, Republicans forced a vote on the constitutionality of the process that strongly suggested Democrats won’t be able to get the two-thirds support they will need for an eventual

conviction next month. Forty-five Senate Republicans supported a resolution by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., that said the trial is illegal because Trump is a private citizen and no longer president. Democrats had the votes to table Paul’s motion, with support from five Republicans. But the level of GOP support for Rand’s effort underscored how difficult it will be to get

17 Republicans to vote to convict Trump. “I think it’ll be enough to show that, you know, more than a third of the Senate thinks that the whole proceeding is unconstitutional, which will show that ultimately they don’t have the votes,” Rand told reporters Tuesday before the vote. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said

the theory that the Constitution prohibits a trial of a former official is “flat-out wrong by every frame of analysis.” He pointed to the fact that the Constitution allows the Senate to not only remove an official from office, but also bar him or her from holding future office. “If the framers intended impeachment to merely be a vehicle to remove sitting officials
