Vaccines on their way to Solano County Todd R. Hansen

FAIRFIELD — Kaiser Permanente spent Friday installing a special freezer to store Covid-19 vaccines it expects to receive Wednesday or Thursday. Solano County Public Health Administrator Jayleen Richards confirmed the vaccines are expected soon, but could not say exactly when. “We expect the initial allocations to be very limited, and we are working to ensure an equitable distribution based on those health care workers in areas with highest risk for exposure. When we receive our vaccine allo-

cations for health care workers, we are prepared to move quickly to vaccinate groups at greatest risk, as required by public health agencies, and based on our infectious disease leaders’ review of clinical evidence,â€? Michelle Gaskill-Hames, senior vice president, Health Plan and Hospital Operations, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, said in a statement released Monday. “CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and state guidelines have identified health care workers determined to be at greatest risk, along with

FAIRFIELD — Solano County had just 11% of its ICU beds available as of Tuesday afternoon, and the Bay Area region’s capacity was down to 15.8%. “It’s really hard to imagine we will escape another day, Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said in a phone interview. Once the region falls below 15% availability of its intensive care unit capacity, the state will place it in the new stay-at-home order, which prohibits private gatherings of any size while forcing some businesses to close and others to reduce their customer capacity. Matyas said the Covid-19 vaccine, expected in the county Thursday or Friday, should help as hospital staffers are among the first to get inoculated.

He said having more staff available will mean the hospitals can expand their capacities, but it will take some time. Matyas said he hopes that the end of the holiday season will relieve some of the pressure as well, and said he is hopeful there will be enough doses available to help prevent a third surge of novel coronavirus infections. “Even if there is one, I don’t think it will be as bad, Matyas said. The county reported 163 new cases Tuesday, bringing the total to 13,897, while the number of hospitalizations reached a pandemic-high of 118. The number of deaths attributed at least in part to Covid-19 remained stable at 91. The seven-day positivity testing rate dipped to 17.8%, but Matyas said he remains concerned about the number. FAIRFIELD — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday it will distribute close to $227 million in Covid-19 vaccine support. The CDC said the $140 million in vaccine preparedness and almost $87 million for tracking

and testing will be going to 64 jurisdictions, including all 50 states and the various U.S. territories. “States and other public health jurisdictions are vital partners in the Covid-19 response and especially in the plans for distributing safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines, U.S. Health and See Pleads, Page A9

Regs find Moderna vaccine safe, effective ahead of FDA review Tribune Content Agency

Moderna Inc.’s vaccine is safe and effective for preventing Covid-19, U.S. regulators said, clearing the way for a second shot to quickly gain emergency authorization and add to the country’s sprawling immunization effort. The Food and Drug Administration’s staff said in a report on Tuesday that the experimental vaccine is 94.1% effective

at preventing symptomatic Covid-19, confirming earlier results released by the company. The report was posted online ahead of a meeting Thursday of agency advisers who will vote whether to recommend authorization before a final FDA decision. The agency doesn’t have to follow the advice of the independent vaccine experts, though it often agrees with its advisory panels. Last week, the FDA

authorized a similar vaccine from Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE after an advisory panel voted 17-4, with one abstention, to support its authorization. The FDA got a much deeper look at Moderna’s clinical-trial data than the numbers previously released to the public by the company. Notably, the agency was able to review the shot’s See Moderna, Page A8

Thomson earns praise for commitment to Delta, personal humility Todd R. Hansen
