FAIRFIELD — NorthBay Healthcare reported Friday that all 24 intensive care unit beds at its Fairfield hospital were full as of about noon. That left the county with nine available ICU beds Saturday, the state reports. Steve Huddleston, vice president of public affairs for NorthBay, said the ICU is open at its Vacaville facility, but the hospital does not have enough staff to cover those six beds. “We are struggling to staff ICU beds at both hospitals. . . . It really is changing by the hour, Huddleston said in a phone interview. America will be getting a huge shot in the arm starting on Monday. Military leaders overseeing the massive effort to distribute hundreds of millions of Covid-19 vaccines vowed to start shipping the Pfizer shots within hours of winning approval. Gen. Gustave Perna invoked the spirit of World War II, calling Saturday “D-Day for the effort to end the deadly coronavirus pandemic. “D-Day was the beginning of the end . . . and that’s where we are today, the leader of Operation Warp Speed told reporters. The first doses will roll out of a Pfizer facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Sunday and will arrive in roughly 150 designated centers on Monday. Another 400 or so centers across the nation will receive their first doses Tuesday. The massive operation will continue for months as officials deliver vaccines to hundreds of millions of Americans in every corner of the nation. Fairfield, Vacaville push Solano case count past 12,700 Todd R. Hansen
thansen@dailyrepublic.net
FAIRFIELD — Sixty-two new cases Friday in Vacaville and 60 in Fairfield made up more than half of the 200 confirmed Covid-19 cases the Public Health Division reported. The new cases bring the county total to 12,733. Vallejo added 47 cases to close in on 4,000 for the novel coronavirus pandemic. The city now sits at 3,965, the matyas county reported. Fairfield has 3,782 cases, while Vacaville’s count is 2,696. But case numbers are only the statistical blocks of the bigger question, which is, when will Solano County be placed in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s more See Count, Page A12
