FAIRFIELD — John Gilbertson goes to work at Travis Air Force Base every day. “My job is to help families in their time of need; basically to make sure they are getting the benefits they are entitled to,” said Gilbertson, who spent 24 years in the U.S. Army. He has attended more than 300 military funerals, though funeral benefits is only one

aspect of his work. “I’ve buried some Army buddies, too,” Gilbertson said. His wife, Mariana, is an Army veteran as well, and so is one of his two daughters. They live in Fairfield. Part of Gilbertson’s military time was spent in Bosnia where part of his job was to help pinpoint and map out mass graves. He also helped identify possible land mine sites for disposal. ayne Steinberg never expected to see his Marine Recruiters School sabre again, but he never stopped hoping to get it back. Every year since the sword was stolen from his apartment, he would call up the Daly City Police DepartINSIDE ment in hopes the sword had been found. “When I attended Recruiters School back in 1981, I was awarded the sword for being No. 1 in my class,” said Steinberg, 62, who is the Facility, Fleet, Safety and Security A special section manager for US Foods in honoring our local Phoenix, Arizona, not far veterans on from his home in Anthem. He served in the Marine Corps from 1976 to 1987. “And in 1997, I was living in Daly City at the time, my apartment was broken into and it was stolen, along with all the ribbons and badges I had,” Steinberg said. But the Daly City police did not have the sword. Actually, for 15 years, Scott Marty had it. A customer of his had purchased a container for $100 as part of an auction and the sword was there.

BENICIA — Ulysses S. Grant, Edward Ord and Joseph Hooker – each a Civil War general – were stationed at the Benicia Arsenal during their Army careers. The post was a staging location for troops during the Civil War and has a significant history linked to the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II. The arsenal also was home to the short-lived Army Camel Corps, and it was the Army’s primary

ordnance facility on the West Coast for more than a century. Founded as the Benicia Barracks in 1849, it was designated the Arsenal in 1852 when Gen. Percifer F. Smith pushed for the placement of what became the first ordnance depot on the West Coast. While the dates seem to vary, it was at that time that a cemetery was founded as well. The Benicia Arsenal Post Cemetery came under the authority of the National Cemetery See Benicia, Page A9

Supes OK new hemp ordinance, with cautions Todd R. Hansen thansen@dailyrepublic.net

FAIRFIELD — Dixon High School is less than a mile from the new Solano County hemp growing zone, but staff assured the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that the permitting procedure will keep actual operations farther away. Ellen Fawl raised the high school proximity issue, as well as concerns

about the lack of nursery regulations, chemical and carbon dioxide use during processing, traffic and how the remaining plant material will be disposed of once the oil is extracted. The board approved the ordinance on a unanimous vote. It goes into effect in 30 days. A violation of the ordinance would be considered a misdemeanor. Assistant Administra-

tor Bill Emlen said the county was aware that the Midway Road boundary for the growing zone was close to the high school and always intended to use the permitting application procedures to address that issue. He said that same permitting process will address other issues, such as nursery regulations, while the ordinance
