Blain White, Danny Falk, Rich Falk and Zack Falk form a family at Vander Hamm Tire Goodyear in Davis.

Vander Hamm Tire Center Enterprise staff In 1976, Chuck Vander Hamm and his wife Marilyn opened a tire and service store in the small town of Davis — Vander Hamm Tire Center, Inc. Over the years it has become a staple in the Davis community with a loyal following and, at this point, also includes a family legacy — three generations! Their daughter and her husband, Carrie and Rich Falk managed the shop up until 2018 along with their wonderful family of employees that included their six children, who have all worked at the shop at some point over the years. In 2018, the business was passed down to their oldest son, Danny. Danny graduated from the University of Arizona and worked

for the family business while getting his master’s degree at University of San Francisco. His wife, Vibeka, manages the bookkeeping for the business. Vander Hamm’s employees also have been a part of the family for many years. Doug Webster has worked for the company since 1979 — 40 plus years. His sons have previously worked here, too. Blain White has been with the company since 1994 — 25-plus years. “Our community is so important to us and we look forward to many more years of service and memories!” said Vibeka. Vander Hamm Tire Center Goodyear is located at 2222 Fifth St. in Davis. Call them at 530-758-8282 or visit www. vanderhammtirecenter.com.

All in the Family The Avid Reader

Enterprise staff After more than 30 years of ownership by the late Alzada Knickerbocker, The Avid Reader in Davis changed owners to Davis couple and family, Brett and Erin Arnold and their daughter and son, Emelyne and Owen. The Arnolds were “thrilled to be taking over the reins of such a beloved local business.” Erin’s first job was working at a local toy and book shop in high school where she “saw firsthand the infinite value of finding the perfect toy or book for each child.” Erin studied human development at UC Davis and went on to receive a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy. Her work as a developmental specialist, therapist and mentor to young adults, contributed to developing a soft spot for children’s and young adult literature. Thus, she developed a talent to source items to meet a diverse set of needs for the business. She is also an experienced traveller and loves to discover great travel books and resources. After growing up on his family’s peach and almond farm, Brett graduated from UC Davis with a crop science and management degree, then went to graduate school to study theology and, ultimately, law. “I just couldn’t seem to leave the books behind,” he said. He also couldn’t leave the “value of imaginative play by turning sticks found in the orchard into swords, baseball bats or periscopes,” — a trait useful in the management of Avid & Co. which features a unique selection of toys, games, puzzles, arts & crafts and cards. “Toys are, at their most basic, tools for

Erin and Brett Arnold, with their children Owen and Emelyne, are the owners of The Avid Reader and Avid & Co. play,” he said. After first meeting at UC Davis, Brett and Erin returned back to Davis with their two kids, Emelyne, 12 and Owen, 10. “Davis has been a wonderful place to raise our kids,” Erin said. As far as their relationship with The Avid Reader, “Emmie and Owen are the people on our team who know the most about what kids need and want out of toys & books, because they are kids,” Erin said. “Their input and advice cannot be overvalued.” Over the past year, the

Arnolds have also enjoyed their new “extended family” — longtime Avid Reader staff — Bruce Mickle, general manager; Jina Fahrni, store manager; Mike McGrail, bookseller; Arthur Vassar, Active manager, events director and bookkeeper; and Holly Snyder Thompson, events and outreach manager. have some worthy local causes. With the coronavirus pandemic, the real estate market changed dramatically. We are grateful for the new skills we have learned and the clients who rolled with the punches to get their houses sold or bought in a new kind of real estate world. Having a more personal experience via video chats with clients, no matter where they are located has been valuable and a good way to connect, when a phone call or text message is just not going to do it. This will be something we intend to continue using in the future to give our clients a more personal experience. continues to push MAK to be a leader in the building industry for environmental conscious designs and building practices. Ellen described why MAK is involved with these groups saying, “Especially with the strain the last year placed on local nonprofits and arts organizations we’ve been reminded of their vitality to our Davis community. We are thrilled to see them return to full engagement and look forward to continuing to support these important community resources.” Reflecting on the past year Ken said, “The pandemic taught us all a lot, and emphasized that nothing is more important than your family and home. Ellen and I are grateful for both, and for the opportunity to work as a family to help others in our community create spaces that they love.” A unique aspect of MAK is its design and build method behind remodeling and general contract-

ing. MAK guides their clients all the way from conception to completion of their remodeling project, working to ensure that their client’s goals for the remodel are realized in full. As an integrated team, the designers work with the production team to coordinate construction and make sure that every step of the process goes smoothly. This dedication to every detail from start to finish is due in part to Ken and Ellen’s backgrounds in fine art and human development as well as Vivi’s background in social impact programs which all feed into MAK’s process and the ethos of the company. Ken and Ellen continue to grow the business with community impact as a leading principal for their vision of MAK’s future. Enterprise staff Netania and Raphael Moore believe that “The client is the principal and the lawyer is the agent, not the other way around.” The attorneys of Moore & Moore, 413 F St. in Davis, understand that their job is to help clients with their needs, rather than telling them what to do. “We are known for educating clients,” Raphael said. That hasn’t changed with the recent pandemic — the office has remained open, with client meetings continuing by telephone and videoconferencing. As our community opens up, office meetings are scheduled based on client needs. Raphael has been in Davis since 1970, having moved his Sacramento law firm here almost 25 years ago. His wife Netania left her position as a Deputy Attorney General in Sacramento and joined the practice more than 15 years ago. The husband and wife team practice from their downtown Davis office in the Phoenix House, a restored 1934 building. “We resurrected the interior to match the era,” Raphael said. At Moore & Moore, Netania works with each client’s unique goals and priorities to draft estate plans that meet their specific needs. As her schedule allows, she takes on juvenile defense work using her criminal law background. She is also a visiting lecturer at UCD’s law school. The firm was the first Davis prac-

As business clients needed their personal matters attended to as well, the practice evolved into handling estate plans (wills and trusts), probates and trust administration, in addition to a full immigration practice. Raphael is the principal who handles these legal affairs. Having spent years litigating in federal courts, mostly with the CIA, Raphael has also devoted over a decade volunteering as a temporary judge for Yolo Superior Court, covering traffic, small claims, landlord/tenant matters and juvenile cases. To date he has had more than 17,000 matters calendared before him, and presided over more than 1,300 bench trials. Raphael and Netania are joined by their law clerk of 19 years, Jamie Taylor, and their administrative assistant, Brigid Jimenez, both Woodland residents. The Moores credit their staff with rounding out their office. Together they provide legal work as a team — that is part of their philosophy. Better and more costeffective service can be provided if everyone is involved, providing their unique skills to each project. Besides being partners at work, the couple have two teenage daughters and live on a farm on the outskirts of town, raising alpacas, goats, and chickens. Back in 1981, with two small kids at home and another on the way, Lynn Christensen opened PDQ, a small “hole in the wall” mailbox store. Located on G Street, next to what is now Froggy’s Bar & Grill, the business grew to include UPS, FedEx and USPS shipping, notary public, and Live Scan Fingerprinting. Enterprise staff When Jeff and Anita Boone opened Patio29 Spirits Co. with their two sons, Adam and Eric Boone, two years ago, they seized on a recent boom in the popularity of craft distilleries in California. According to the family, there were 184 distilleries licensed in California by the end of 2019, compared to just 25 distilleries licensed in the state a decade prior. The family was well-prepared to enter the industry. “Our family went through years of training and learning before we distilled our first spirits,” Eric Boone said. “Some of this included training through the American Distillers Institute Conferences, UCD’s Brewmaster program, and extensive handson workshops with distilleries up and down the west coast.” Patio29 specializes in making farm-to-glass spirits using locally grown grains and fruit. The Winters craft distillery currently produces 12 different in-house spirits, including

All in the Family Patio29 Spirits Company vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, bourbon, rye, grappa and a number of flavored whiskeys, all of which can be tasted or purchased at the company’s tasting room. The distillery also gives tours every Saturday, which include an educational walkthrough of its production facility and a private tasting with the head distiller. The business has also benefited from Winters’ vibrant food culture. “Being a part of the already established and renowned food and drink scene in Winters is a blessing,” Boone said. “The community has been very supportive since we first opened our doors in August of 2019.” Like many local businesses, Patio29 adapted to the pandemic in unique ways. “During the pandemic, we produced roughly 1,150 gallons of hand sanitizer to help combat the national shortage of sanitizer products,” Boone said. “The agencies and businesses that purchased it made it possible for us to donate to nonprofits and the medical community.”

THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE

All in the Family 3rd Street Jeweler

FRIDAY, JULY 9, 2021 C15

Enterprise staff 3rd Street Jeweler has been a retail gem in downtown Davis for 15 years now. Owner Frank Acosta, assisted by his mother, Carmen, and niece, Nevaeh, says the whole team focuses on customer service, but it is Carmen who “makes sure the store looks and smells fabulous.” Acosta got his start in the business working for DeVon’s Jewelers in Sacramento before transferring to the DeVon’s in Davis. When that store closed, Acosta decided to stay and launch his own business. Custom designs are the store’s specialty but there is plenty of ready-to-buy jewelry as well.

Services also include ring sizing, stone setting and re-setting, repairs and more. They’ll switch out a watch battery, change watch bands and remove links, as well. 3rd Street Jeweler relocated in 2019 from its location on Third Street to 130 G St., Suite C. But everything else remains the same: a focus on quality service with integrity and offering the best selections. After nearly a year and half weathering the pandemic and its shut-downs, 3rd Street Jeweler is happily welcoming back customers. “We are here and we are open to serve,” said Acosta. “To our loyal customers, thank you.”
