Creating a home office REAL ESTATE 101
More and more people are resetting a room in their home in order to provide dedicated office space. Location matters If the move to remote work has taught us anything, it’s that your home office is a huge part of your everyday life. So don’t cheat yourself out of needed space. Rework your guest room, rather than wedging a small desk into some windowless closet. Also consider ambient noise and foot traffic in your area. If you need peace and quiet to work well, or if clients will be stopping by, that should factor into your plans, too.
Form vs. function
Tame those wires
Focus on your workflow when arranging the furniture so everything you need is at hand, but don’t let the home office become the new version of your boring old cubicle. Make selections that complement the rest of your decor, and add pieces like a loveseat to make it feel more like home. Forgo the traditional office beige for a paint color that motivates you.
Even with nearly universal Wi-Fi, cords remain a fact of (work) life. Consider investing in a management system, which can be as simple as an everyday twist tie. Higher-end versions offer a more elegant look and feel, which can be particularly important if you have set up shop in a shared area or walkthrough space.
Get a great chair Ergonomically correct chairs are a great investment, considering the amount of time you’ll spend parked there. Look for options that have adjustable heights, armrests and backrest, as well as a 360-degree swivel base and built-in lumbar support. Position it so you can view something other than a wall or door. Natural light is a great mood enhancer, and we’re often inspired by the outdoors. If you don’t have access to a window, consider hanging an inspirational framed picture or painting.
Organize vertically, too Most home offices put space at a premium, meaning there’s only so much area to be found on horizontal surfaces like a desk. Don’t forget to that you can file and store things vertically, as well. We’re taught to be take a series of precautions when we’re out and about, often overlooking the every-day dangers lurking around our kitchens and bathrooms. Here’s how to keep safe at home.
Fires
Poisoning
Be sure to have operational smoke alarms in every room of your home, and test them regularly. Most people do not have a fire plan in place, with safety protocols and an agreed upon meeting place. To reduce your risk a house fires, clear away clutter, in particular flammable matter like newspapers, magazines and old boxes. Have a professional regularly inspect your electrical systems. Call an electrician if you find loose or frayed wires.
Many common household items carry with them the risk of poisoning, in particular for young children and pets. Cleaning supplies, medications and fuel for lawn equipment are among the chief dangers. Keep them out of reach or locked away so they won’t be accidentally ingested. Carbon monoxide poisoning is particularly dangerous, because it’s difficult to smell. Install a detector to keep your family safe. Remember to keep up with regular maintenance on any tool or appliance that might leak fuel or fumes.
Drowning Pools should be properly secured, and closely monitored. The same goes for bath time for younger children. This water-related hazard is often overlooked. Around 90 children drown inside their home every year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Two-thirds of those deaths happened in the bathtub.
Choking Make sure you cut your good into small enough bites that you don’t risk choking. This is especially important if you’re feeding younger children. Remember to pair a drink with your meals, since that’s an important aid in chewing. Small objects can also cause choking in kids and animals.
Falls Secure rugs and carpeting, and remove clutter and tripping hazards like power cords. The CDC reports about 36 million falls among older adults annually, with more than 32,000 deaths. About 3 million elderly U.S. citizens require emergency-room treatment for fall injuries each year. But unintentional injuries — including falls, but also drug overdoses, car crashes, and drowning — are actually the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 1 and 44 years old. —HomeWise
