Hospitals stretched by COVID surge By Anne Ternus-Bellamy Enterprise staff writer

Davis artist Wes Horn created this bench at G Street Plaza to honor Bob Bowen.

Bowen is depicted on the front of the bench riding a high wheel bike as he has done for many years in the UC Davis Picnic Day parade. The project resulted from community members wanting to recognize Bowen’s retirement from the city of Davis and to honor his contributions over multiple decades to city culture. COVID-19 hospitalizations in Yolo County have reached their highest point since last winter’s surge, with 25 patients in the county’s two hospitals on Tuesday. The last time that many COVID-19 patients were at Sutter Davis and Woodland Memorial hospitals was in early February of 2021. The county saw a sharp increase in just the last six days, with hospitalizations nearly doubling from 13 last Thursday to 25 on Tuesday. All but five of the 25 patients are unvaccinated. On Tuesday, the county had no ICU beds available in its two hospitals and just two medical/surgical beds, according to county data. Yolo County Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson warned last week that hospitalizations would likely increase over the next week or two given the extremely high rate of COVID-19 transmission in the county over the

Benchmark: Downtown art honors Bowen By Anne Ternus-Bellamy Enterprise staff writer A new mosaic bench has been installed in G Street Plaza in honor of Bob Bowen. Bowen, this year’s Citizen of the Year, spent 43 years working for the city of Davis in both public relations and community service before his retirement in 2021. The bench was completed by local artist Wes Horn. And while the city will not be

holding a dedication ceremony due to the pandemic, members of the public are invited to view the bench when visiting downtown. The significance of the G Street Plaza as a place for the bench lies in the city’s history. “The town of Davisville was founded in 1868 and two of the first businesses, the Empire Saloon and the American Hotel, were established a few years later at the corner of 3rd and G Streets,” said Bowen. “G Street

Plaza is located in one of the first developed parts of downtown. It’s an honor to have a bench in a place with so much historical significance.” The bench features signature Davis locations like the Varsity Theatre and the Rainbow City playground and iconic community images significant to Bowen, such as unofficial city mascot Hamburger Patty, the Davis Children’s Nutcracker and the Davis High School Blue Devils.

Adventures in the Caribbean and locally

e had a risky, challenging nature adventure in December, our family of nine, adult kids and partners and grandkids. We flew to the Caribbean where we rented a boat captained by my husband, Alan Jackman, loaded up groceries for a week, scuba gear for all, and set sail in the British Virgin Islands. Our daughter, Kristen Andersen, choreographed it all as she fears it is a last chance for a total family trip since her oldest soon graduates and heads east for a career. In the past, we’ve had our best times together doing this trip.

Many things have changed since we traveled there eight years ago. In 2017, Hurricane Irma hit, a Category 5 with sustained winds of 185 mph and gusts of over 220 mph. Two weeks later, Hurricane Maria, hit St. John. Two thirds of the homes were destroyed and
