Former police sergeant admits embezzlement

WOODLAND — A former Davis police officer charged with embezzling funds from the Davis Police Department struck a plea deal Wednesday that resulted in a misdemeanor conviction.

“No contest, your honor,” Trevor Anthony Edens, 46, said when Yolo Superior Court Judge David Reed asked for his plea to the misdemeanor embezzlement count, reduced from the felony charge originally filed against him last summer.

The resolution also calls for Edens, who appeared in court virtually via Zoom, to serve 45 days in county jail — or an alternative custody program — and one year of informal probation.

Edens’ attorney, Julia Fox, tried to have California’s common searchand-seizure clause withdrawn from her client’s sentence, noting his lack of a prior criminal record and calling the current case “an anomaly.”

“I don’t think that Mr. Edens poses a significant enough community risk to justify a search condition,” Fox said.

Changes to city noise ordinance tabled for now California to simplify its

By Anne Ternus-Bellamy Enterprise staff writer A proposal to amend the city’s noise ordinance without commission review or much in the way of public notice was pulled from the City Council’s agenda Tuesday evening.

City Manager Mike Webb recommended removing the proposal from consideration, saying, “simply put, I think more work needs to be done on this item to provide greater context and to articulate the intent and purpose of the contemplated ordinance changes.”

Currently, the city’s noise ordinance sets a maximum decibel level of 55 dBA during daytime hours in resi-

dential areas, dropping to 50 dBA at night. City staff are recommending the ordinance be amended to change the standard to average hourly noise level rather than maximum.

Critics have said that would allow someone to set off fireworks or blow an air horn repeatedly provided the average sound level over the course of an entire hour remained below 50 or 55 dBA. Why the proposed change?

City staff say the standards contained in the current ordinance “do not reflect a reasonable noise threshold for an urbanized area.”

A new survey finds tenants are having a hard time accessing the state’s $2.6 billion emergency rent relief, which is contributing to the slow distribution of California’s marquee program to thwart a potential statewide eviction tsunami.

Briefly ‘UC Davis LIVE’ talks reentry As pandemic restrictions are lifted, people face returning to workplaces and activities with a mixture of anxiety and elation.

PEN WIDE THE GRADUATION GATE ... Now that just about anyone who wants to be vaccinated has been vaccinated, it’s time for Davis School District administrators to allow more than a handful of family members into next week’s graduation ceremonies.

Davis Senior High School’s graduation has been split into two evenings, with half the alphabet graduating on Thursday night and the other half on Friday night.

Which is all well and good, considering there was no in-person graduation at all last June.

Each graduate has been allotted four tickets, which sometimes doesn’t even cover immediate family members, not to mention aunts, uncles, grandma, grandpa, best friends and Aunt Mary from Vacaville.

When that policy was put in place, vaccines were hard to come by and it seemed the prudent thing to do. Now, however, you can get vaccinated at any one of a dozen spots without a reservation.

I propose that the Davis High graduation at the school’s football stadium open up a section for people who have been vaccinated and are willing to wear a mask. Call it a reward for good citizenship.

The students will still have their four tickets to pass out as they please. But an area for the vaccinated — a concept that is already being successfully used in major league sports venues — would accommodate many more souls who would dearly like to be there.

And it would serve our graduates well after a long and trying final year.

Yes, it’s short notice, but for the 2021 graduates, this is their one and only graduation.

It’s not too late to do the right thing by all these kids, who, over the last 15 months, have endured so much to earn the right to proudly wear their deep blue caps and gowns as they march onto the field in front of family and friends.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY ... I heartily agree with a recent letter to the

editor from Davis High parent Joy Klineberg who offered great praise for the effort that went into The Enchanted Forest Senior Ball May 22 at Heringer Estates winery in Clarksburg.

Wrote Klineberg, noting that 435 seniors from Davis High, Da Vinci, King and DSIS attended, “A team of more than 100 adult volunteers made up of parents and community members filled 118 volunteer shifts over the course of the event.

This was the best of Davis coming together to support each other and our children. Many parents of seniors had tears of joy as we watched our kids enjoy a day of ‘normal.’ ” Indeed, there were tears of sadness a few months ago when it seemed as if there would be no Senior Ball, but a group of dedicated parents (Supporting Our Seniors) who wouldn’t take no for an answer forged ahead undeterred to create magical memories for our super seniors from several Davis high schools.

Added Klineberg, “I am grateful that DHS PTA understands the value of connections both in and outside of the classroom between students, teachers and parents.

Our school culture is created by

the structure of relationships and communication between the various groups invested in DHS.” The reviews from the students themselves were glowing. Indeed, it was a night to remember.

State Senate approves Dodd’s recycling bill Special to The Enterprise SACRAMENTO — The California Senate approved legislation from state Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that would divert more solid waste from landfills by expanding the types of beverage containers that can be recycled and by improving bottle collection services.

Senate Bill 451 would bring much-needed improvements to the state’s more than 30-year-old Bottle Bill Program. In recent years, it has suffered by declining recycling rates and the closure of recycling centers.

Recycling rates have dropped from 85% in 2013 to 76% in 2018.

Glass container recycling has

declined to 66%. The problem has worsened with the coronavirus pandemic.

SB 451 would expand the eligibility of recycling to wine and spirits bottles. It also would launch a pilot collection program aimed at increasing the bottle recycling rate to 80%.

Additionally, it would enhance

industry stewardship of recycling efforts.

The bill, which passed the Senate late Tuesday on a unanimous vote, is supported by Elders Climate Action, the California Association of Local Conservation Corps, the National Stewardship Action Council, the Wine Institute, the American Beverage Association.

St. James Catholic Church honors fathers Learning CPR in school Special to The Enterprise St. James Catholic Church extends a warm invitation to all community members to join in several celebrations honoring fathers during the month of June.

As part of the parish celebration of the Year of St. Joseph, the Rev. Rey Bersabal and the Rev. Rene Jauregui invite all fathers, fathers-to-be, grandfathers and fatherly mentors to join them for a morning of reflection on the journey of fatherhood. What does it mean to be an earthly father and serve the family much like St. Joseph, with charity and humility,

quietly protecting his family, and interceding for them? The morning sessions will be offered in English and Spanish and will be followed by a bilingual Mass and blessing at 10 a.m. June 12.

In addition, all fathers, fathers-to-be, grandfathers and fatherly mentors will be honored at special Father’s Day Masses during the weekend of June 19.

There will be a special recognition of fathers at all Masses which will include a blessing and gift from the parish. There is a Vigil Mass at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, an 8 and 10 a.m.

English Masses on Sunday, and a Spanish Mass at

noon Sunday.

It is with great joy that the St. James community also recognizes the 30th anniversary of priesthood for current pastor, Bersabal, and the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Dan Looney, former pastor of St. James, at the 5:30 p.m.

Mosquitos tested positive for West Nile Special to The Enterprise ELK GROVE — The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District confirmed on June 1 that the first mosquito samples of the season have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The two mosquito samples were collected from central Galt.

“As we expected, the very warm weather we’ve had recently increased the number of mosquitoes and accelerated virus activity,” said Gary Goodman, district manager. “It’s important for residents to take these findings seriously and do everything they can to protect themselves,” Goodman added.

Just last week, three birds picked up from Galt also tested positive for the virus. To date, this is the only area within district boundaries where the virus has been detected. Last year in California, there were 231 confirmed human cases of the disease, including 11 fatalities. The detection is evidence that the disease is present and the public should take proper precautions to stay protected. “The summer season is around the corner and as more people enjoy outdoor activities it’s important to remember that the best protection against mosquito bites is an effective insect repellent,”

Goodman said. Residents are also encouraged to continue reporting dead birds, neglected pools and other mosquito problems.

As a response to the finding of WNV, the district will increase its mosquito trapping and monitoring in the area to find sources where mosquitoes may be

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in young athletes and 2,000 children and teens in the U.S. die from it every year.

The latest episode of “Timeout Radio” is about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a lifesaving emergency procedure that gets blood flow back to the heart and brain.

About 90% of people who have a cardiac arrest die before they reach the hospital because they did not get CPR treatment in time, before paramedics arrive.

Finding our feet again as the world turns D M A T he past several weeks have seen a transformation in my personal calendar, with some in-person meetings among vaccinated individuals beginning to crowd out the endless slew of Zooms.

This is a welcome development, but I’ve learned I’m not alone in possession of a sense that I may have to relearn how to be with other people “in real life.”

It’s June and we’re rapidly moving towards exiting the pandemic. That is the episode title of a recent “In the Studio” interview I did with Dr. Aimee Sisson, Yolo County’s public health officer.

We discuss the disconnect between the CDC’s masking announcement and the timeline the state and county are following, how we’re doing with vaccinations in Yolo County and Davis, and what moving forward looks like.

I appreciated Dr. Sisson’s candor about the state of public health funding and how she hopes the pandemic has some lasting impact there. You can

Finally, I am beyond thrilled to announce that KDRT 95.7 FM has received a 2021 Hometown Media Award from the

Washington, DC-based Alliance for Community Media (ACM) Foundation. Station representatives will accept the award for “Overall Excellence in Community Radio” at a virtual ceremony June 30.

KDRT is a project of DMA, which is the only nonprofit community media center in Yolo County and carries out a mission of providing alternatives to commercial media through partnerships across Yolo County.

DMA’s predecessor, Davis Community Television, was the first public access channel in the nation to launch a Low-Power FM (LPFM station). Small in wattage but big in impact, these hyper-local stations are designed to focus on a small geographical area, such as a neighborhood or a community.

KDRT’s impact has been incredible locally, but its reach broader than any of the original founders could have envisioned.

The low-power radio station — whose motto is “Where the Grassroots Grow” — launched in

2004 and has been broadcasting from the DMA facility at 1623 Fifth Street 24/7 ever since.

With 34 local programmers, the station provides an eclectic mix of music and public affairs programming, with live streaming and podcasts available, and listeners in more than 30 countries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of its volunteer programmers learned how to record from home, keeping the community well connected despite distance and isolation.

We’re deeply honored by the award, and hope we’ve done Davis proud with it.

number of changes to simplify the application process and get more money out the door faster.

“This is a once-in-ageneration crisis, and we need to treat it like one,” said Melissa Jones, executive director of the Bay Area Regional Health

Inequities Initiative, one of the report’s sponsors.

Their concerns echo complaints from tenants who were unable to receive rental relief via either first-come, first-serve or lottery systems.

“The state is telling me they value the roof over my head far more than they

value my life,” said Jaylynn Bailey, a Pasadena film and television writer who has fallen behind on rent during the pandemic.

“We are at risk of displacement now, and we have been for every day since April 2020.”

Bailey said that, despite

her access to a printer and scanner, and a successful application for unemployment insurance payments, she struggled with the rental relief application in Los Angeles County and had to ask a local resource center for help. In the meantime, she believes her landlord has

hired a private detective to monitor her activity.

“Now we’re just waiting for the (eviction order) coming on July 1,” Bailey said.

Obituaries Mark Rivera

June 10, 1971 — May 22, 2021 On May 22, 2021, Mark Rivera passed away at the age of 49 in Davis.

Mark was born on June 10, 1971, in Denver and grew up in Littleton, Colo., with his mother (Shirley), father (Robert), sister (Adrienne) and brother (David).

From a young age, Mark showed great creativity and artistic talent. He was never one to fit into the standard mold that society expected. He will forever be associated with his love of scooters and fedoras as well as the punk hairstyles of his youth (although he does not want to be defined by that phase)!

As an adolescent, Mark’s home life was shaken by his parent’s divorce and his sister’s bout with cancer.

Always one to deeply care and empathize with others,

Mark experienced these events in a more intense way than others. These events and grief shaped his life — initially with anger and then hope. This raw exposure to life-changing events at a young age resulted in the profound and emotive expressions that came through in Mark’s work and relationships.

Art and emotion intertwined for Mark. He channeled himself through different mediums, ultimately settling on ceramics, terrazzo and mosaics; these became his “Mosaic Marks.”

He was drawn to working on public works of art that were large and impactful.

He started with public art in Denver and decided to make the big move in 2000 to Davis for additional

opportunities to grow as an artist. He continued with pieces around Davis that RIVERA reflected the evolution of his soul — having a daughter (Jessica), becoming an uncle (to Josie and Allie) and losing his father.

His soul and his spirit shined from him and was witnessed by all who met him, leaving an everlasting impact.

A celebration of life is planned for Thursday, June 10, in Central Park in Davis — preceded by an Art Procession from the CO-OP at 4:30 p.m. The celebration of Mark’s life will start in the Central Park gardens at 6 p.m. for a sharing of stories by those who experienced various aspects of his life.

Mary Agnes Araujo died peacefully on May 7, 2021.

She had suffered from Alzheimer’s dementia for many years and she did “go gentle into that good night.”

She taught for 35 years at Birch Lane in Davis and

had many former students who remember her well.

She leaves behind her husband, Frank P. Araujo, her two daughters and seven grandchildren.

The wide variety of rocks rock

C

ollectors of all ages have always been interested in rocks and the minerals that make them up. They come in countless shapes, sizes and colors. There are three main types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. All three types have different ways they form and even have their own separate classifications.

Sedimentary rocks are formed by layering sand, mud, silt, organic matter, or a combination of several of those. Erosion is a major part of forming sedimentary rocks. As forces such as wind or water wear down rocks, they create sand and other small particles. The particles settle, forming layers and after compaction will form different types of sedimentary rocks. There are three classifications of sedimentary rocks: clastic, biologic and chemical.

Clastic sedimentary rocks are formed by other types of rocks, such as sandstone or conglomerates.

Biologic sedimentary rocks are formed around something biologic in origin, such as plants, shells or animals. Examples of biologic sedimentary rocks are coal or chert.

Metamorphic rocks result from intense alteration of any previously existing rocks by heat , pressure or chemical changes.

Igneous rocks are formed by volcanic processes. Igneous rocks come in two main varieties, intrusive or extrusive.

Intrusive igneous rocks are formed when magma cools inside of the Earth. The magma cools slowly, allowing large crystals to form making rocks such as granites or gabbros.

Extrusive igneous rocks are those that are cooled on the surface of the earth after a volcanic eruption.

Eruptions cause the lavas to cool quickly and form finer-grained rocks such as basalts and pumice.

Metamorphic rocks are when a sedimentary or igneous rock undergoes changes due to high temperatures and pressures within the Earth.

Metamorphic rocks come in foliated and nonfoliated varieties. When exposed to intense pressures, minerals can align and form unique shaped layers called foliation.

Examples of foliated metamorphic rocks are gneiss and schists. Nonfoliated metamorphic rocks also go through changes due to increased temperatures and pressures but do not form the foliated layers. Examples include marbles and quartzites.

All three rock types interact with each other and can interchange. This is called the rock cycle.

Igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks can erode to form other sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks can melt, become magma, and turn into more igneous rocks.

Sedimentary and igneous

rocks change to metamorphic rocks when exposed to intense temperatures and pressures, even metamorphic rocks can continue to change into different metamorphic rocks.

Campers in our Earth Explorations camp observed different types of rocks and learned about how they are formed.

Campers also learned about other forces that shape our earth including wind, glaciers, earthquakes, volcanoes and more!

“The defendant embezzled public monies. I think given these proclivities he can do well to have a search clause for the next year” while on probation, Sequeira said. Reed ultimately obliged, including the condition in Edens’ sentence.

Edens’ plea resolves a criminal probe that began in November 2018, when the then-sergeant was assigned to supervise the Yolo County Narcotics Enforcement Team (YONET), a now-defunct task force that investigated major drug-related offenses countywide, Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel previously told The Davis Enterprise.

Pytel disclosed new details on Thursday, saying several YONET detectives under Edens’ supervision back then contacted their assigned administrator “and said that he may have

been having a relationship that would not be appropriate for that position.

Based upon what they said, we put him on administrative leave while we investigated what they were saying.”

As the YONET sergeant, Edens had control of cash from adjudicated cases as well as a cash fund used by agents to make undercover drug purchases, according to Pytel. Department officials conducted an immediate audit of the fund as part of their investigation “and we found that there was $1,040 missing,” he said.

Pytel said the money was taken from the fund just hours before the audit, and while others had access to it, Edens “was accountable for it.” Officials also learned that Edens contacted someone in an attempt to replace the funds, an indication he was the person responsible for the theft.

At that point, the Davis Police Department contacted the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office to request an independent criminal investigation to parallel its internal probe.

As those were underway, Edens fully resigned from the agency on June 7, 2019, with no benefits extended to him, Pytel said. He had been with the department since September 2002.

Following the conclusion of its investigation, the Yolo County DA’s Office submitted its case to the Solano County District Attorney’s Office for review and potential handling of the prosecution should charges be filed. That agency filed a criminal complaint in Yolo County on July 23.

Pytel previously called Edens’ conduct “inexcusable and entirely incompatible with being a police officer and supervisor.”

“The agents involved all did exactly what they were supposed to do under the circumstances,” Pytel said.

“Clearly, this was an inappropriate act, and the criminal action was the right thing to do under the circumstances.”

“It is a usual practice by other urbanized cities in California to have an adopted hourly average noise level,” the staff report also said. In comments to the council Tuesday, Webb said the proposal was intended to be a “clean-up” item.

But others believe the proposed amendments are a significant change in policy deserving of more comprehensive review.

The proposal, contained in the council agenda released Friday evening, immediately provoked concerns among residents both over the recommended changes to the noise ordinance as well as what some saw as a lack of vetting by city commissions and members of the public.

Among those weighing in on social media as well as in emails were residents living near city parks who have raised concerns about noise in the past, particularly when the city proposed converting the tennis courts at Slide Hill Park to pickleball courts (where the rackets and

balls used produce more noise than tennis does) as well as the Sky Track zip lines installed at Arroyo Park in 2019.

During a city Recreation and Park Commission meeting two years ago, 10 city residents, including two former parks commissioners, raised concerns about both the noise emanating from Arroyo Park zip track as well as the public noticing that did or did not occur before they were installed.

Former commission chair Lorraine Hwang called the zip lines “a noise nuisance” and said a zip line installed at Sycamore Park years ago was ultimately removed after neighbors complained.

Among the most prominent of those seeking resolution from the city are former Davis Mayor Joe Krovoza and his family who live close to the equipment.

Other Arroyo neighborhood residents echoed that.

“I think the best remedy, because of the noise

factor… is for the city to remove the zip line to a better location and have a city planning process start from the beginning,” said David Johnson.

The zip lines remained at Arroyo Park, but the city began having an employee lock the equipment at night — and unlock it in the morning — to alleviate concerns about the nighttime noise.

During much of the pandemic, the equipment was locked around the clock. In late April, the Recreation and Park Commission voted in favor of immediately reopening the zip lines and leaving them unlocked 24 hours a day.

At that same meeting, city staff presented options to the commission that included moving the equipment to another area of the park further away from residences, but commissioners voted to leave it where it is, citing the results of a sound report commissioned by the city to measure the noise of the zip lines.The wThewsadf;l iasjdf;lsai;ldfjs;ljdf

e all know that our smartphones can take photos, send text messages, check email, and make video (“FaceTime”) calls. But living quietly in your smartphone are a host of other apps and features you may not yet have discovered.

Some of these features might best be classified as “odd jobs” while others can simplify the activities of daily living in meaningful ways. Here are just 10 of the cool things you can do with your smartphone: Shine a light on it: Can’t find your keys in your purse? Walking to your car late at night? Learn how to easily access your phone’s flashlight for situations like these.

Magnify it: Our students are delighted when we show them how to use the magnifier feature on their smartphone. This little tool is incredibly handy when you’re trying to read a menu in a dark restaurant, or the teeny tiny print on a medicine or supplement bottle. Hang a straight picture: Is that photo on the wall looking a little crooked?

T

he Artery presents “Impressions,” a mixedmedia fiber-art and photography show by Gary and Cathy Cederlind. They use photography and fiber art to illuminate the world as they see it. The show runs from today to June 28, at the gallery, 207 G St. in downtown Davis.

Cathy Cederlind is known for her bead embroidery that she transforms into wearable art.

During COVID lockdown, however, she experimented with the Korean paper-making technique of Joomchi. She seals several layers of mulberry paper with water to form one strong, texturized sheet.

She then takes the paper and felts it. Her technique allows the felted Joomchi to do what it will.

At this point, she can use any combination of acrylics, pastels, silk cocoon, tyvek and hand stitching to enhance each sheet.

When the paper is embellished the result is layered mixedmedia fiber art.

Through photographs, Gary Cederlind reinterprets what he sees in the world around him. To him, the question is “what if?”

Yolo Branch Library seeks proposals for public art installations Special to The Enterprise Professional artists in Northern California with experience in the design, fabrication and installation of public artworks are invited to submit qualifications and design proposals for a permanent public art installation at the Yolo Branch Library, which serves the rural communities of Yolo, Zamora and Dunnigan.

The library is being rebuilt and replacing the previous 100-year-old Carnegie building.

The groundbreaking for the new construction of the Yolo Branch Library is planned for sometime in July and will provide a community room for library programs; public access computers; meeting space; adult literacy tutoring; childhood literacy programs and homework help; social activities for adults and seniors; a variety of classes; and access to community services.

The project is expected to be completed in the early summer of 2022.

Three publicly accessible areas of the new facility have been identified by the Art Advisory Committee for public art enhancements within the budget guidelines of this project.

These are considered the most suitable for the placement of artwork to aesthetically enhance the project for the patrons of the facility. Artist proposals can address one or all three locations.

Lauma Akmene will perform organ and piano music at Davis Lutheran Church for the “Music Conversations” series performed on Sunday afternoons at the church beginning June 13. with Hans-Ola Ericsson at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University in Montreal and theology and church music at the Luther Academy in Riga. She also studied organ and piano at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

She has attended masterclasses in performance, improvisation and choral conducting with wellknown teachers in Europe and Canada (e.g. Olivier Latry, Jürgen Essl and James O’Donnell).

She has participated in numerous concert series and festivals in Europe

and Canada, including “XV Latvian Festival of Song and Dance in Canada” in Toronto and has commissioned and premiered compositions by the Latvian composers Vineta Lice and Oskars Herlinš.

‘Spirit Untamed’: This is a hobbled horse Pointless sequel is saddled with poor production values

By Derrick Bang Enterprise film critic Although little girls probably will embrace this film, the rest of the viewing demographic will be unimpressed.

Unlike the first film in this franchise — 2002’s “Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron,” which is a lush, hand-drawn production with genuine heart — this new entry is soulless, coldly calculated product. The simplistic script —

by Aury Wallington, Kristin Hahn and Katherine Nolfi — does little beyond rebooting the origin story from Wallington’s 2017-19 TV series offshoot, “Spirit Riding Free.”

A scant effort is made to individualize most of the primary characters, who aren’t much more than stereotypical tics and hiccups. Goodness, the villain of the piece — voiced by Walton Goggins — isn’t even granted a name.

Co-directors Elaine Bogan and Ennio Torresan bring nothing to the party.

Even the CGI animation is flat and uninspired. The entire production has the bland, lazy, slapdash and cloyingly sweet atmosphere of something that was rushed to market, with minimal concern for quality. It’s an overlong TV episode with delusions of grandeur: not quite “My Little Pony” territory, but darn close.

Miradero, a small town (this from the press notes) “on the edge of the wide-open frontier.” Ergo, figure mid-19th century American West. Although Lucky has grown up on the more “civilized” East Coast, she has her mother’s rebellious streak and love of danger.

This greatly concerns her Aunt Cora (Julianne Moore), who decides to move them back to Miradero, where Lucky’s father, Jim (Jake Gyllenhaal), may have better luck controlling the girl.

Although initially out of place in this raucous railroad town, Lucky soon becomes best buds with Abigail Stone (McKenna Grace) and Pru Granger (Marsai Martin). Each is bonded to a horse — Boomerang and Chica Linda, respectively — which proves useful when Lucky becomes infatuated with a newly captured wild mustang she dubs Spirit.

This mustang also catches the eye of a heartless horse wrangler

A scant effort is made to individualize most of the primary characters, who aren’t much more than stereotypical tics and hiccups.

Goodness, the villain of the piece — voiced by Walton Goggins — isn’t even granted a name.

(Goggins), who hopes to capture both Spirit and the extensive herd that he led in the wild. The girls, in turn, are determined to stop him.

That’s it for plot.

Forget about supporting characters; Moore and Gyllenhaal do nothing to turn Aunt Cora and Jim into actual people … although, in fairness, the script gives them nothing to work with.

Andre Braugher is a bit more fortunate as Pru’s father, Al, the local stable owner; he has something approaching a credible personality.

Goggins’ horse wrangler is simply The Bad Guy; he has no personality whatsoever. Snidely Whiplash, Dudley Do-Right’s foil way back in the day, was far more entertaining.

Why hire actors as talented as Goggins, Moore, Braugher and Gyllenhaal, if they’re not given any opportunity to contribute?

The film’s minimal dramatic heft rests entirely on the shoulders of Lucky, Abigail and Pru. Yes, it’s nice to see a story focused so closely on girl power, and Merced, Grace and Martin make them engaging; they’re plucky,

clever and devoted to each other.

The mild perils they face in the untamed landscape, as they pursue the wrangler, are suspenseful enough to edge the film into PG territory, but I doubt any viewer — even the youngest — will worry.

R. Orlando Duenas’ editing is reasonably tight, and we can be grateful that the film runs only 87 minutes. Amie Doherty’s score favors sweeping, inspirational themes that link the bond between Lucky and Spirit, with that of the girl and the memory of her mother; that’s a nice touch.

And, yes, I’m also grateful that — aside from its central anthem, “Fearless” — the film isn’t burdened with forgettable songs.

All things considered, though, I simply don’t understand why this movie exists. It adds nothing new to the franchise, merely rehashes territory covered far better in a TV series that’s only a few years old, and pales when compared to its two-decades-old ancestor.

It’s time to let Spirit run truly wild again, free of any further interference by lowest-commondenominator filmmakers.

Art patrons create new exhibitions endowment at museum

In their first major commitment to UC Davis, philanthropists Kellie and Jeff Hepper, ’79, have pledged $1 million to create the Hepper Family Exhibition Fund, an endowed gift to support the core exhibition work of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. This is the largest gift made to the museum by an alumnus, and it will help create public exhibitions and exhibition-related programming for all to enjoy at the Manetti Shrem Museum.

“Kellie and Jeff Hepper embody the spirit of UC Davis: They are serious about playful creativity, and it shows in their wonderful contemporary art collection,” said Rachel Teagle, founding director of the Manetti Shrem Museum.

“They are dedicated to the student experience, and

their gift empowers the museum to deliver joyful art experiences to our students for generations to come,” she added.

The Heppers, who split their time between Houston and Southern California, are avid art enthusiasts with an extensive collection that includes pieces by UC Davis professor emeritus Wayne Thiebaud, Andy Warhol and Mary Heilmann. With art playing such an important role in their lives, they wanted it to have a similar impact on the community of Davis.

“Art can add so much dimension and joy to people’s lives,” said Kellie Hepper, who graduated from UCLA in 1979 with a degree in art history.

“Going to museums and seeing artwork makes people happy, so I just hope our gift will help encourage people to come see the exhibits and for everyone to have a little part of art in their lives.”

from UC Davis in 1979, and went on to have a distinguished 30-year career in the oil business. The couple began collecting contemporary art after his retirement in 2009, and it has become one of their favorite activities to do together, along with discovering new museums.

When asked about their favorite artist at the Manetti Shrem Museum, Kellie Hepper answered, “Wayne Thiebaud, definitely. In fact, his work is one of the main reasons why we became so passionate about the Manetti Shrem Museum. When I stepped inside the first Thiebaud exhibition there, the colors and images of food made it such a happy experience.”

Reignited connection When the Heppers visited the Manetti Shrem Museum, they had not been to Davis for a long time. They fell in love with the museum during that first visit, and it played a large part in re-connecting them to campus.

“I’m very passionate about the Manetti Shrem Museum. I think it’s wonderful not only for the students but for the whole community of Davis and surrounding areas,” Kellie Hepper added. In 2018, she became a member of the Manetti Shrem Advisory Board.

In recent years, the couple has built close ties to UC Davis by visiting campus and hosting regional UC Davis alumni events at their home in Houston. Jeff Hepper is also a member of the Regional Campaign

Twisting voter registration stats

I

A tale of togetherness E ach passing day feels like another step toward normalcy in Davis.

More and more of us are vaccinated.

We remain committed to following public health guidelines, including regular testing.

The reward is that family and friends are reuniting. We are beginning to enjoy life outside of the pandemic bubble.

One of the key reasons we’ve made it this far is because of Healthy Davis Together. This joint initiative between UC Davis and the city of Davis is keeping our community safe through widespread testing, contact tracing and vaccine clinics. Public health messaging has also been critical. Through Healthy Davis Together, our university and town are national role models for how higher education, innovation and civic leadership come together.

It takes a remarkable amount of teamwork to run a program like Healthy Davis Together — HDT for short. You need civic leaders who value communication and collaboration, especially in working with the university. You need a community that’s eager to participate and keeps public health at top of mind.

And you can’t have HDT without UC Davis.

Our university’s Genome Center has been at the heart of Healthy Davis Together since it launched in late 2020. The program’s rapid saliva-based testing is thanks to the innovation of plant-sciences professor Richard Michelmore and his team at the UC Davis Genome Center.

They repurposed machines that are more commonly used in agricultural genetics.

These array-tape machines can run thousands of tests a day, far more than machines built specifically for medical diagnostics. The Genome Center has since processed more than 400,000 saliva samples.

Our efforts to support students in alignment with public health guidelines was led by Dr. Cindy Schorzman, the medical director of Student Health and Counseling Services. She was on the front lines from the first days of the pandemic and remains a key leader in our ongoing work.

f Republicans are banking on the fall recall election against Gov. Gavin Newsom as the key to eventually recovering their status as a major force in California’s public affairs, perhaps they had better guess again.

That’s the clear implication of the latest voter registration figures released the other day by the state’s top election official, the appointed Secretary of State Shirley Weber.

The numbers do show a bit of a bounce for the GOP, up 0.6 percent — that’s threefifths of a percentage point — from 2019, the state’s last year without a scheduled general election.

But that slight gain — the first for Republicans in many years — did not come at the expense of Democrats, who gained 3 percent in the latest numbers, fully five times as many new registrants as the GOP. Rather, the Republican gain stems from a decline in voters refusing to state a party preference, now at 23.7 percent of all California voters, a drop from their previous 28 percent.

The results of registration drives by both major parties leave the Democrats at 46.2 percent of all those registered, the party coming closer to majority status than it has in generations.

Slight as they appear, these changes carry vast

implications for the recall because they involve many thousands of voters. Republicans became less popular in California than ever before, even if they did pick up a few more registrants.

As a result, the GOPinspired recall would need an almost unanimous yes vote among all non-Democratic voters to reach a majority.

That’s very unlikely, when noparty-preference (NPP) voters in past elections broke sharply toward the Democrats and against Republicans.

The numbers also emphasize the need for Newsom and his allies to keep all major Democratic figures in line and off the list of potential replacement governors that will be part of the twoquestion recall vote: one question will ask whether voters want Newsom dumped, the other who should replace him in case voters approve an ouster.

Also clear from the registration numbers is that the 2020 election, for the most part a

referendum on then-President Donald Trump, saw more voters take sides between the big parties, rather than gravitating toward the middle as many did over the 10 years since California adopted open primary elections allowing all voters to back any candidate they like for a given office, regardless of party.

With a smattering of American Independent, Peace and Freedom and Green party adherents among the non-Democrats now registered, Republicans would likely need a strong turnout of their own voters going unanimously prorecall, while also getting virtually all NPP nods in order for the recall to fly. Plus at least some Democrats.

Those eventualities appear unlikely just now.

et, there are Republican strongholds in California that strongly favor the recall. Lassen County in Northern California is one. The GOP gained 6 percent in registration there over the last two years, now holding a 3-1 margin. But that county has just under 31,000 residents, many of whom signed Newsom recall petitions.

This gives Lassen less than half the electoral clout of the small Los Angeles County city of Bellflower, for just one example, and demonstrates

why Republican dominance of rural areas never gives them much of a policy voice.

All of which means Newsom is probably safe in this fall’s vote, and likely will emerge even stronger for his probable 2022 reelection run.

Even though almost all Republicans detest Newsom, few fear him in the way Democrats and some others were terrified in 2020 of a second Trump term when he would know he would never again need to face the voters.

That fear was one significant reason why a fair number of formerly NPP voters declared a choice between the parties.

There is no such factor at work in the recall, and the presence of Republicans only on the replacement governor list would likely make it certain that almost no one but registered Republicans votes to fire Newsom.

Which is why the latest voter registration figures bode poorly for the GOP not only this year, but for many more to come.

r. Brad Pollock and his team viewed the COVID-19 crisis through the scientific lens of a public health crisis.

They studied missteps at other universities.

They were adamant to not make those same mistakes.

Dr. Pollock is professor of epidemiology, chairman of the department of public health sciences and associate dean for public health sciences at the UC Davis School of Medicine.

He told The New York Times, “What does it mean to keep your campus well when everyone else is getting sick around you? The university is part of the community.” This statement epitomizes how UC Davis thought about HDT from the beginning of COVID19.

We are grateful to our students for their commitment to keeping themselves and the community safe. They demonstrated this by participating in “staycation” activities that were supported through HDT grants during Halloween and spring break.

HDT continues to focus on keeping the broader community top of mind. In recent weeks, HDT has expanded into other communities in Yolo County, including vaccination clinics in West Sacramento and Woodland.

Will all this said, there’s no doubt that it’s been a year of loss and sacrifices. Many of us have experienced personal trauma in a number of ways because of the pandemic. It’s been hard and recovery will take time.

However, the partnership between UC Davis and the city is stronger than ever. We’ve come together during the greatest public health crisis of our times, kept our community as safe as possible and communicated like never before.

As we look ahead to turning a big corner this month, please get vaccinated and continue to get tested regularly. We have much to celebrate in June, including graduation, Father’s Day, PRIDE Month and Juneteenth.

We’ve come a long way together. We’re better prepared than ever to handle future challenges together.

Letters COVID funds for stormwater enhancements I would appreciate if The Enterprise would report on how this pandemic relief funding from the Biden Administration is planned to be used for the proposed waste-water treatment enhancements, instead of increasing our taxes.

plan is going off the rails, the first step to yelling “halt” is to ask for a “pause” to freeze funding and undertake a broader review of the issue. Our congressman, John Garamendi, recently asked for such a “pause” in a speech to the Arms Control Association.

What needs to be “paused”? The Pentagon seeks to develop, test and deploy a new fleet of 400 land-based, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) called Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD). Do good and live good A wise teaching states: One good deed leads to another good deed, while one misdeed leads to another misdeed.

For many years, I have seen Davis people, sometimes parents escorting small children, blow through traffic controls. I now see automobiles blowing through stop signs and stop lights.

There are probably other examples of misdeeds and my imagination is not up to pointing out what may come next.

Our misdeeds, both small and large, are growing and can grow worse and worse. I hope we will all do better and better and then better again, in all ways.

The wisdom teaching further says: The reward for a good deed is another good deed and the reward for a misdeed is another misdeed.

I would say all actions come around to us, so if rewards and punishments speak to you — do good and live good. And may your heart follow!

Blue Devil squads drop league twinbill Enterprise staff

It was a rough Wednesday night on the courts for the Davis High boys and girls volleyball teams.

Both local teams dropped their Delta League matches to their cross-causeway rivals, Jesuit and St. Francis, respectively.

In straight sets, the Marauders topped the fellas, while the Lady Devils stole a point before falling,

Girls Grace Heringer worked her tail off.

The Devil opposite hitter was a dig machine, diving left, right, forward and back as she tallied a season-high 21.

“That was the most competitive we’ve played against them in a while,” Heringer told The Enterprise. The UC Davis-bound senior added eight kills in the outing.

“Taking a set and keeping it really close, we played great defense and really kept them on their toes, so they couldn’t just run their best plays all the time.”

In the opening game, DHS leaned on the hot hand of Kate Nelson. The junior spearheaded a ninepoint service streak before a handful of unforced errors let the Troubies claw their way back.

Heringer had an eightpoint service streak of her own in the following game, as DHS stole the set. Setter Nicole Risch (17 digs) factored heavily into the momentum swing, along with key kills via Emma Thompson, who finished with a team-high 15, and Emily Wells (four).

DHS never let the Troubies ahead by more than five points for the remainder of the contest, taking a momentary 14-12 lead in set three.

“Close games like those are tiring,” added Heringer, who along with Nelson also played lacrosse for the Blue Devils this spring.

“But that’s why we play.

Heringer added eight kills in the match, while Nelson finished with seven. Risch tallied six and Lena Sundin finished the night out with four. In the ace department, Nelson smacked down three and Risch accounted for a pair.

Davis returns to the North Gym Friday for a 5 p.m. Senior Night match against Elk Grove.

Boys The Davis boys volleyball team fell in straight sets to dominant rival Jesuit on Wednesday night, 25-10, 25-8, 25-12.

Head coach Chris Sortor was pleased for the most part with his squad’s performance against the talented Marauders.

“I feel like they started off with a lot of energy and were talking a lot in the beginning,” noted Sortor. “They had some good hype going into the game, it just kind of trickled off at the end. Overall, I think they did a good job and had lots of effort. They shut down one of (Jesuit’s) best hitters consistently which was really impressive to me.”

Rowan Keller and Marcus Blewett ran the front line for the Devils, notching four and three kills, respectively. Rookie Liam Langley was a defensive

Despite the positive takeaways from the evening matchup, Sortor is still looking for improvement from his squad. The first-year coach is hoping for effort over all else in the team’s final outing of the season.

“On Friday, it’s our senior night, I just want them to go all out as much

as they can. We have three people who it will be their last game. I want them to play their hearts out, play the best they can. I know they can do a lot better than what I saw tonight.

Throughout the season they’ve been working for this last game.”

Sortor’s squad is 2-4 overall and 2-3 in Delta League play going into Friday’s home match against Elk Grove. The team will honor seniors Hein-Gilley, Keller and Colin Reeve before the game.

DHS senior Bercutt off to Olympic Swimming Trials Local roundup

Enterprise staff Davis High senior Natalie Bercutt will hit the water in Omaha, Neb., this weekend at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at CHI Health Center.

The Blue Devil breaststroke standout, who trains locally with the Davis Aquamonsters, is set to compete in the event’s Wave I competition in both the 100meter breaststroke on Saturday and BERCUTT 200 breast this Headed to upcoming MonOlympic day.

Swim Trials Bercutt, who will swim collegiately at Wisconsin post-graduation, set a CIF State record in 2018 as a member of the Lady Devils’ 200 medley-relay team (1:41.31). While competing for DHS at the 2019 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, Bercutt, then a sophomore, swam to an SJS title in the 100-yard breast (1:03.75).

DHS will finish the season Friday when Jesuit visits Arroyo Pool at 6:30 p.m.

UCD field hockey Senior UC Davis midfielder Madison Theodore earned

The Bakersfield native started all 57 games for UCD in 2021, posting a team-best .313 batting average, .864 on-base percentage, .476 slugging percentage and scored 46 runs.

UCD finished last in the Big West this season, 11th, with a 14-43 overall record.

UCD football The Aggies had a pair of players named to Phile Steele’s FCS All-America Teams, announced Thursday. Named to the firstteam, punter Daniel Whelan collected his third All-America honor of the spring, while defensive back Jordan Perryman earned a third-team defense nod.

Eastern Washington quarterback Eric Barriere was named the Offensive Player of the Year,

a title he also holds from the FCS Athletic Directors Association and Big Sky Conference.

UCD women’s water polo Junior center Noelle Wijnbelt has earned third-team AllAmerica honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.

This is the third straight award for the human development major from Tustin, as she garnered third-team distinction in 2019, then made the second team after the shortened 2020 season.

Wijnbelt led both UCD and the Big West Conference with 35 goals, shooting a team-leading .593 (35-for-59). She also drew 21 exclusions and three 5-meter fouls, while totaling six hat tricks for the year.

The Aggies went 11-8 during the delayed 2021 season and ranked as high as No. 9 in the weekly CWPA Top 25 poll during the year.

DHS soccer nixed Thursday’s Davis High boys and girls soccer matches were canceled. After holding graduation ceremonies last week, Sheldon did not have enough athletes available to play.

The Blue Devil boys end the spring 7-3-2 overall. The DHS girls close out the season at 7-3-1.

The time I’ve had to grow here in Davis as a professional, they’ve allowed me to make some mistakes along the way too, but grow from them each and every step of the way. I will be forever indebted to all the people in both the school and in athletics that have helped me get to this point.”

River City competes in the Metro League along with Kennedy, Burbank, Laguna Creek, Monterey Trail, Grant and McClatchy.

Athletes and the media

I

t may come as a surprise, but I am not shocked that not everyone likes to talk to the media.

Sure, as children, many athletes may have stared into a mirror and held their own postgame press conference for nailing the winning basket or launching a walk-off home run.

However, it’s a lot different when instead of seeing their own reflection they stare out at a sea of strangers asking all sorts of questions. And on top of that, their words are then broadcast and put in print for the world to hear and read.

Working for The Enterprise, I’ve covered athletes from 8 to 88 years old. All of them have their quirks.

Interviewing kids after a Little League game is always entertaining. They sound like mini-Major Leaguers.

“It’s a team win. We all put in the work. It feels great.”

I haven’t even asked a question.

“You’re with the paper, right? Is that guy your photographer? Did he get my catch?”

Still haven’t been able to say a word.

“Man! This is a great win! A great win!”

I finally pull out my notebook and turn to the coach as the young center fielder runs off.

“He pretty much answered all my questions, Coach, but do you have anything to add?”

H

igh-schoolers at least wait for me to ask questions.

These athletes also taught me the most about interview technique — what works, what doesn’t.

This was the age level where I learned that the star athlete is not necessarily the star quote nor do they want to be.

The same ice-in-their-veins athlete would freeze at being the center of a one-woman press corps.

Luckily for me and newspaper readers, these athletes also had amazing teammates, who stepped up and lauded them with the proper praise.

It’s also helpful that I was able to cover the same teams for years and develop a trust and, eventually, that athlete would start to feel comfortable and do interviews.

College athletes are easiest to interview, but the hardest to get an authentic answer. They have classes for freshmen on how to deal with the media. And now that UC Davis is Division I, there is typically a sports-information staff member present at all interviews to monitor student-athlete answers.

Sometimes, I long for the Division II days when I could just wander the halls and fields and chat up coaches and student-athletes.

In the end, my job takes me a little bit longer. Some of my stories have amazing quotes, which is great, and some don’t have any quotes, which is less great, but still OK because not everyone sits in front of a mirror.

Devilish duo Baron, Looney to play together at Chico St.

By Will Wyman Enterprise staff writer It wasn’t the Senior Night they wanted. But it was the one they got.

The Davis High girls soccer team had its final sendoff of the season on Thursday night in the form of a junior varsity-varsity scrimmage. The squad’s scheduled matchup against Sheldon was wiped off the schedule after the Huskies were unable to field a roster. The Devils trounced Sheldon 8-0 on Tuesday 8-0, concluding their season. Sara Stone’s squad finished the year with a 6-3-1 record.

So the team honored its players in a less traditional fashion, with the usual pregame ceremony honoring the soon-to-be graduates before the unusual Davis-on-Davis clash.

While Senior Nights can be emotional for players sharing the field together for the final time, graduating Devils Megan Looney and Summer Baron don’t have to say their bitter goodbyes to each other quite yet. The pair will be joining forces next year for the Chico State Wildcats.

Although they won’t miss each other, they say they'll still sorely miss their Davis team.

“My favorite part of the season was the group of girls we had,” admitted Baron. “I think this year especially we were really able to bond throughout the grade levels, which isn’t something that always happens.

"We did a lot of social things outside of the games, too. That’s what makes high school special.”

The time away from the pitch, interestingly, brought the team together.

“I was definitely disappointed because I didn’t get to play as much, especially for club,” noted Looney, who along with each of the Devils' five other graduating seniors has played club ball for Davis Legacy. “And for high school we didn’t get to go to sections.

"But I think through all of it, the highschool team is a closer team because of it.”

The two players have experienced tremendous spells at the varsity level for Stone, making an impact even as underclassmen.

“My favorite memory was probably scoring the winning goal at the section championships my sophomore year, my first year on varsity,” recalled Looney.

“That's also one of my favorite memories,” agreed Baron. “I think the blackout games are also super fun. Just getting a big crowd in the stands and having all of your friends come and cheer you on.”

The decision to continue with Chico State at the next level came down to the two feeling at home in their new community.

“I didn’t think I had the opportunity to play in college up until my freshman year when my club coach told me that Chico was looking at me,” Looney told The Enterprise. “At first, I was unsure about it, but I met the team and met the coach and that changed everything ... the team, the coaches, and just how much of a family they are.”

Baron echoed her longtime teammates’ sentiment: “At the end of the day, I visited Chico, and it really wasn’t a tough decision at all. Like

Megan said, the community there is like no other and I’m so excited to spend my next four years there.”

The varsity captains will also be rooming together for their freshman campaign, an arrangement that they are both looking forward to.

“Super special to be going in — even if Megan weren’t going with me — to the soccer team and already having a group of friends,” concluded Baron. “It’s just even more special to have my best friend going to the same school as me and playing on the soccer team.

That’s a super unique experience and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Hiring of new DHS football coach could be on the horizon

By Owen Yancher Enterprise sports editor With summer training sessions fast approaching, a new Davis High football coach should be in place by the end of June, according to Blue Devil athletic director Jeff Lorenson.

The varsity coaching position opened up last month when Steve

Smyte concluded his final season with the Blue Crew. The veteran Devil mentor had been a staple on the local sidelines over the past decade, serving two threeyear stints as head coach.

According to Lorenson, DHS received nearly 10 applicants.

Some of those applying are Davis schools employees.

“We’re looking for a coach that

can lead the program and also enrich the student-athlete experience,” Lorenson says.

The Davis school district gives hiring preference first to certificated employees and second to classified applicants, and also considers “three years head coaching … five years assistant varsity or junior varsity experience” and National Federation of High

Schools online coaching certificates, among other hiring criteria.

Lorenson says a hiring committee has been organized and is expected to meet in the coming days to interview candidates.

From there, once the committee provides a recommendation, Lorenson and DHS Principal Tom McHale will present it to district administrators with the
