Local officials wary of state’s reopening By Anne Ternus-Bellamy

This is the scene from a wooden bridge along the Jedediah Smith Memorial bike trail. The trail runs 32 miles along the American River Parkway.

Enterprise staff writer Yolo County’s health officer warned Tuesday that with the increase in the more infectious UK variant locally, indoor gatherings and events approved by the state last week are still risky and the state’s timing “poor.” However, the county will not be more restrictive than the state, Dr. Aimee Sisson told the Board of Supervisors. “Yolo County, of course, could opt to be stricter than the state,” she said, “but it’s important to remember that Yolo County is not an island. We’re surrounded by counties that will be following the state’s lead and allowing these higher-risk activities. To be stricter than the state would most likely only harm Yolo businesses without protecting Yolo residents who will simply travel across county lines to participate in these activities.” Rather than restricting activities, Sisson said Yolo County is advising residents and businesses about the risks and strongly recommending that entities hosting higher-risk indoor events limit them to those who are fully vaccinated or have proof of a recent negative COVID test.

A new regional adventure C

are for a little adventure? Get a bike carrier, load up your bikes, take them to Sacramento’s Discovery Park, and start biking on the 32-mile Jedediah Smith Memorial Bicycle Trail along the American River Parkway. Or you could walk it or ride on a horse on parallel trails. You can access it at many points between Discovery Park and Folsom Lake. The trail is named after the famous beaver trapper, Jedediah Smith, the first American explorer to stand at the junction of the

American and Sacramento Rivers. I can’t believe how long it took for me to discover this precious gem. For years, I rafted down the American

River, but it took me 33 years to discover the bike trail. You might want to spend $15 and buy "Biking and Hiking the American River Parkway" (fourth edition) which is a mile-by-mile guide of natural and cultural history along the Trail with maps, access points, photographs and rich history. You can purchase it from the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, which is another beautiful place to visit on the American River where you will feel serene and in the wilds.

You will travel over the former site where 500 Nisenan lived until 1830; a portion of the Pony Express trail; the site where John Sutter landed near mile four in 1839 to found New Helvetia and his employee, James W. Marshall, discovered the gold that brought people in search of it from around the world; pass through John Fremont and Kit Carson’s campsite; pass gold tailings. There’s signage to read and

The students’ names initially were disclosed in a Davis Joint Unified School District email sent Sunday afternoon to district families, offering support services to students and families affected by news of the tragedy.

The Davis schools community is mourning the loss of a Davis High School senior killed in a solo-vehicle crash Saturday night in rural Solano County. Ayush Shrestha, 18, died at the scene of the 9:30 p.m. collision along Tremont Road east of Buckley Road, where two Davis High juniors, Jasper Eerkens and Sophia Durgin, along with a third teen who does not attend school in Davis, suffered major injuries, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. Prior to attending Davis High, Shrestha was a student at North Davis Elementary School and Holmes Junior High School. A GoFundMe page launched Monday has raised about $15,000 to cover medical expenses for Durgin and her cousin Gabby, a student at Pioneer

Others may feel the need and desire to share their emotions and seek support,” Dr. John Bowes, Davis school superintendent, wrote in the email.
