IT’S TIME TO HONOR BOB FOR HIS 50+ YEARS AT THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE! The celebration will take place in three parts, including two activities and a scholarship fundraiser. We invite fans of Dunning's work to make a tax-deductible contribution to endow a scholarship in his name, to be awarded annually to a graduating senior from a DJUSD high school who is considering a career in journalism. Additionally, we invite the community to watch an online celebration on Friday, April 9th, where we will trace the highlights of Bob’s career. Locals are also invited to show Bob some love by participating in a socially distanced vehicle parade planned for Saturday, April 24th.

For details on each of these activities, visit www.smartzgraphics.com/bob-dunning-scholarship.

Agencies team up for vaccines Healthy Davis Together partners with CommuniCare in West Sac BY ANNE TERNUS-BELLAMY Enterprise staff writer When it comes to the health of Yolo County’s most disadvantaged populations, there may be no more important entity than CommuniCare. The federally qualified health center — with clinics in Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento — serves as many as one out of every seven county residents, providing primary, behavioral, dental and prenatal care regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. And it

does so on a shoestring budget stretched thinner than ever during this pandemic. In the weeks and months ahead, CommuniCare will serve as a key conduit for getting vaccines into the arms of the county’s hardest-to-reach populations, including the uninsured, undocumented and low-income residents. The provider’s success so far is evident in a statistic from the Kaiser Family Foundation: nationwide, just 9 percent of people who have been vaccinated so far are Latino. For

CommuniCare’s patient population, it’s 47 percent. And now CommuniCare is getting some much needed assistance from — who else? — Healthy Davis Together. The nationally recognized partnership between the city of Davis and UC Davis has already provided significant benefits in the form of free COVID-19 testing to anyone who lives or works in Davis and an infusion of hundreds of thousands of dollars to support Davis businesses. Now Healthy Davis Together will provide staffing and administration for a CommuniCare vaccination clinic scheduled to open the week of March 8 in West Sacramento, which is

home to some of the most disadvantaged communities in the county. “The city of West Sacramento has graciously given us space at city hall to use as a vaccine clinic,” said Dr. Sheri Belafsky, medical director for Healthy Davis Together. Belafsky said the clinic, which will be operating Monday through Friday, will have the ability to provide upwards of 1,000 doses per week. “It’s an effort to get vaccine out more efficiently and effectively that we hope will both get more shots in arms but also promote health equity in vaccine distribution,” said Dr.

Jennifer Mullin, prevention and wellness manager for the Davis Joint Unified School District, said in an email the inperson extracurriculars starting up on elementary campuses include gardening, dance and sports-related activities. Junior high schools have offered cross country and track team

opportunities already, and are in the process of expanding online clubs to in-person. At the high schools, aside from sports, The Davis Citrus Circuits robotics team has been meeting over the past few weeks to prepare for virtual challenges, and the Da Vinci Charter Academy Black Student Union met on campus to design a logo on Feb. 19. Superintendent John Bowes said in a Feb. 19 post on the district website the district is planning to scale up extracurricular activities over the

coming weeks to give as many students as possible an opportunity to return to campus and have fun with their peers. “These opportunities are being developed each day with input from staff and students,” Mullin said. Much has been said about negative mental health impacts that have occurred while students have been learning remotely for roughly the past year. Mullin said in an email that the goal of opening up oncampus extracurricular activities is to support the mental

The House of Representatives passed the American Rescue Plan, the first coronavirus relief bill since the election of President Joe Biden, in a nearly party-line vote early Saturday morning.
