vaccinating employees with the Moderna vaccine,” said Chad Hatfield, chief pharmacy officer at UC Davis Health. The Moderna vaccine is also given in two doses, the second taken 28 days after the first. Clinical trials found that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are both safe and about 95% effective against COVID-19. They cannot be mixed, however. If your first dose is the Moderna vaccine, for example, the second dose must also be the Moderna vaccine. The same goes for the Pfizer vaccine.

Moderna shot arrives at UCD Health BY CALEB HAMPTON Enterprise staff writer On Tuesday, UC Davis Health received its first batch — about 4,300 doses — of a COVID-19 vaccine made by the pharmaceutical company Moderna, the health system announced this week in a press release. The shipment arrived just days after the vaccine received emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration. The Moderna vaccine is the second COVID-19 vaccine to arrive at UC Davis Health. Last week, as part of a nationwide rollout of the country’s first

FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine, the medical center received 4,875 doses of a vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech. Since then, UC Davis Health hasn’t wasted time. According to the press release, the health system has already given more than 4,000 employees their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The employees will need to get a second dose 21 days after their first. “A working group from UC Davis Health has spent several weeks developing tiers to determine an equitable process for vaccine administration for employees who choose to be

inoculated,” the health system said last week in a press release. “Under this tiered approach, staff and employee vaccinations will be based on the risk of COVID-19 infection associated with the work functions being performed.” Among those in the highest priority group At UC Davis Health are Emergency Department physicians, nurses, first responders, custodial workers and clerks. UC Davis Health said it expects to use up the rest of its initial supply of the Pfizer vaccine this week. “When that happens, we expect to begin

ages 0-16 were distributed to 783 children while Santa and a few superheros were on hand to greet them from a distance. “This year, with the unprecedented times our staff and our clients have experienced, it was especially important for us to host our annual holiday toy distribution event,” said Katie Villegas, executive director of the children’s alliance. “Many of the families that we serve have lost significant amounts of their

Sat Saturday: Chance of showers. Hi High 57. Low 37.

In a strange and tumultuous year, 2020 delivered this paradox for Gov. Gavin Newsom: As Californians endured enormous suffering amid devastating wildfires and a deadly pandemic, their governor accumulated an unusual trove of power to shape Democratic politics for years to come. Newsom filled two major positions Tuesday — naming Secretary of State Alex Padilla to the U.S. Senate

seat held by incoming Vice President Kamala Harris, and tapping Assemblywoman Shirley Weber to replace Padilla as California’s top elections official. The governor will likely fill one more elected office early next year, naming an attorney general to replace Xavier Becerra, whom President-elect Joe Biden has nominated to his cabinet. It’s a spate of political christenings California hasn’t seen in nearly 70
