Spreading season’s joy (And only joy ...) BY LAUREN KEENE Enterprise staff writer The coronavirus pandemic has brought significant changes to how Davis celebrates the holidays this year. But some time-honored traditions will continue, despite a little tweaking. That holds true for the Davis Food Coop’s 35th annual Christmas Eve holiday meal, a free event enjoyed by as many 700 people who otherwise would not have a place to get one. While this usually festive sit-down meal will be to-go only due this year to current health guidelines, it carries on nonetheless. “Traditions were made to stand the test

of time and persevere, even in the most difficult of circumstances,” Co-op marketing manager Vince Marchese said in a blog post about the Dec. 24 event.

“They bring people together to accomplish a common goal of upholding the values and beliefs that are passed on through each generation. For each tradition there is a story to tell, and many more stories to come, about the positive impact that it has had on the people who take part in it,” Marchese wrote.

The Co-op also is accepting clothing donations to be made available for those picking up meals. Clothes may be dropped off until Dec. 23 at the Co-op, which also has information about dessert donations and volunteer opportunities for the event.

Meals will be distributed from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Veterans Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th St. Offerings include turkey or a vegan bake, stuffing, mashed

Any leftover food from the holiday meal will be promptly donated to the Yolo Food Bank, while leftover clothing will go to HOPE at Davis, an organization of UC

COVID-19 cases in Yolo County are rising at rates never before seen, the county’s two hospitals are full and nine new deaths were reported on Tuesday. The only spot of good news: the promise of a vaccine, which is expected to arrive in limited numbers in Yolo County later this week. Asked to sum up what lies ahead for the county, Dr. Aimee Sisson, the county health officer, SISSON cited Dickens. County health officer “The opening line of A Tale of Two Cities, ‘the best of times and the worst of times’ is where we are at right now,” Sisson told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning. “We are probably about to enter one of the darkest times of the coronavirus pandemic so far, based on the rise in cases, the rise in hospitalizations, and the predicted continued rise in hospitalizations that may exceed our healthcare system’s capacity. “Yet at the same time, we have a vaccine now available, but in small

WEATHER Thu Thursday: Ea Early showers. Hi High 57. Low 39.

Possible sports competition between high schools in California has now been pushed back to at least Jan. 25, 2021, by the state Department of Public Health as new guidelines were issued as to when prep and youth teams are able to reconvene for certain activities. The timing of the late Monday announcement by Gov. Gavin Newsom came as a surprise to many in public schools. The new state guidelines, according to one Sac-Joaquin Section official, weren’t expected “until after the first of the year.”
