The traditional live community tree lighting events in downtown Davis will not be held this year due to public-health restrictions. The city of Davis, however, is honoring the annual tree lighting festivities with a virtual online program at www.cityofdavis.org. A decorated live tree will once again light up the E Street Plaza. The tree lights will be turned on for public viewing every night through the holidays. For information, contact Bob Bowen at bbowen@cityofdavis.org or Carrie Dyer at cdyer@cityofdavis.org.

The Davis City Council stuck largely to the recommendations of its twomember subcommittee Tuesday night as it named new members to various city commissions. The council appointments of 43 individuals to 12 different commissions followed lengthy public comment from both applicants and members of the public, a number of whom objected to the subcommittee’s recommendations. In particular, the recommendation not to reappoint three commissioners who have been particularly critical of council actions of late, and opposed the Davis Innovation and Sustainability Campus, drew accusations of retaliation. The three commissioners, Todd Edelman, Alan
Pryor and Matt Williams had all sought reappointment to PARTIDA their respective commissions — Edelman to the Bicycling, Transportation and Street Safety Commission; Pryor to the Natural Resources Commission; and Williams to the Utilities Commission. They were among more than 20 current city commissioners who were seeking reappointment and while the others were recommended for reappointment, the council subcommittee of Mayor Gloria Partida and Councilman Dan Carson did not recommend reappointments for Edelman, Pryor and Williams. Pryor and several members of the public contended Tuesday night that

Since UC Davis announced plans in September to terminate its physical education program, faculty have protested, students circulated a petition and drafted a student government resolution, and a California State legislator weighed in, all urging the school to reconsider. But with PE lecturers set to be laid off in two weeks, campus leaders are moving ahead with their decision to end the program. Created before World War I, UC Davis’ PE program has produced leaders in sports psychology, coaching and other specializations. Recently, the
campus has offered dozens of PE courses per year, ranging from kickboxing to aquatics to women’s self-defense, as well as lecture courses on subjects like “Healthful Living” and “Sport in American Society.” The courses are largely taught by current and former coaches of UC Davis’ athletics teams, an arrangement the campus’ Academic Senate insisted on preserving as a condition of UC Davis’ 2003 move to Division 1 athletics. As a result, the program has represented for many a unique commitment to collaboration and mentorship. “The elimination of the PE Program would be a significant
