County still purple, with record cases

Picnic Day will be virtual again BY CALEB HAMPTON Enterprise staff writer For the second year running, UC Davis’ annual Picnic Day event will be held virtually in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Picnic Day publicity director Alexis Tornero announced Monday in a press release. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 17. “Picnic Day takes almost a whole year to plan, and we want to make the safest decision for all participants and guests,” said Picnic Day Chair Caitlyn Liu. “Having more time to plan a virtual event allows the Picnic Day Board to innovate and think creatively when it comes to reimagining how people experience Picnic Day.” The announcement comes amid promising news about three different coronavirus vaccines, which are expected to take months to roll out, and amid rising case numbers and hospitalizations in Yolo County and across the United States. The first Picnic Day was held in 1909. Before last year, it had been canceled five times. An outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease caused the first cancellation

DoSomething is a global volunteering organization with members in every area code in the U.S. as well as in more than 130 countries. The goal of the organization is to promote young people to advocate for social change.

Schools plan construction BY JEFF HUDSON Enterprise staff writer The Davis school district is embarking on multiple construction projects, funded by the 2018’s Measure M, a local school facilities bond that voters approved by a 74.5 percent margin. Here’s a rundown of the projects in the pipeline: ■ Early Learning Center on the Korematsu Elementary campus. This $7 milion project broke ground a couple of weeks ago, and project completion is expected in spring 2021.

■ New Science Labs at the Emerson/Da Vinci Junior High campus. This $7.6 million project broke ground on Nov. 19, and completion is expected by spring 2021.

Many of the campaigns, which are featured on DoSomething’s website (www.dosomething.org/ us), encourage small acts of positivity that may seem minimal, but, with the group’s 5 million volunteers, creates a big impact. Back in 2015, with the rise of hate crimes targeted at the Muslim community, DoSomething launched a campaign titled “Sincerely, Us.” Volunteers created cards of appreciation for the Muslim community, collectively resulting in enough for every mosque in

the U.S. to get 15 cards each. Last year, DoSomething launched a club program for high schools, allowing high schoolers who are interested in civic action to earn community service hours and leadership opportunities. Dua Hassan, a junior at DHS and the president of the Davis club, had volunteered with DoSomething and other organizations for a long time. The idea for the club came to mind after she

Even with a raging pandemic, Davis Firefighters Local 3494 vowed to continue its annual Thanksgiving food basket program, although it was scaled down to include Safeway gift cards instead of food items along with the 525 turkeys. Major sponsors included Safeway, Coca-Cola, Bobby Coyote, Recology, Good Friends Hawaiian Poke & Ramen and Firefighters First Credit Union, along with local residents who donated money through contact-free methods. Yolo County remains deeply purple in the state’s color-tiered COVID-19 framework with virus cases here continuing to surge, including a record 108 new cases reported on Tuesday alone. Numbers unveiled by the state Tuesday show the county’s adjusted daily new case rate was 20.9 for the week ending Nov. 18, up from 17.4 the week before and more than three times the rate of 6.7 two weeks ago. A daily new case rate of 7 per 100,000 residents is the threshold for entering the purple tier. Meanwhile, the county’s test positivity rate also rose from 6.7 to 7.2 percent. The county’s own data shows both the daily new case rate and the test positivity rate have only increased further since Nov. 18. What’s happening in Yolo County is happening across the state. As of Tuesday, 45 of the state’s 58 counties are now in the purple tier and no counties remain in the least restrictive yellow tier.
