B2 THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2020

It’s time to pose for your UC Davis cutout Enterprise staff They’re everywhere ... cardboard cutouts of fans at sporting events. Most pop up on television, frequently at far-off places. But as the college basketball season fast approaches this month, UC Davis has found a way for its faithful to attend — even if humans aren’t allowed in The Pavilion right away. Interested in having you, your family members or pets immortalized in paper? The price is right and ordering is pretty simple ... For students, cutouts cost $25 and, when games are streamed, they’ll be a new-wave opportunity to say hello to your friends and family back home. For everybody else, your season-long seat is assured for $50. UCD Athletics says there are discounts for the purchase of three of more cutouts, and, should you decide to make a group purchase (hint, hint: maybe your entire office staff or family wants to go cheer on the Aggies), you can call the campus Ticket Office at 530-752-2471 for deeper discounts.

Gunrock Gallop Registration for the inaugural UC Davis Gunrock’s Gallop — a

LOCAL ROUNDUP virtual 5-kilometer run — and support The Pantry, a free resource for Aggie students that addresses food insecurity by providing fresh food, basic necessities and ensures that no student ever misses a meal due to financial reasons. Under the banner “Your Course — Run to Feed the Aggies,” Gunrock’s Gallop will take place on Dec. 5 with participants asked to find a time that is most convenient to walk, run, bike or even swim a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). To participate, head to ucdavisaggies.com. Adults are $40, UC Davis students are $30 and youth participants (ages 3-13) are $25; a rate of $30 per person is available for groups of 10 or more from the same organization. A race T-shirt, medal and bib are included. Registration must take place by Dec. 1 to guarantee the delivery of packets before race day.

En garde, Davis Join the fundraising window to raise money in support of the Berry Athletic Foundation and Team USA Pentathlon/Multisport (USAPM).

The anniversary events will begin with a week of virtual silent auction activity culminating with a live online auction on Nov. 14 (5 p.m.), followed by a virtual party with members of USAPM. “We have over 70 items up for bid, from family pizza nights to a VIP stay at the Olympic Training Center,” Simon Pitfield, founder of DFA, noted. The event is free to attend, however, it does require registration. More information and a sign-up link can be found at davispentathlon.wordpress.com/ auction.

Local golf The foursome of Bill Muller, Matt Muller, Ted Villanueva and Don Pappa won the Northern California Golf Association’s zone qualifier at Davis Golf Club earlier this year. The quartet shot a two-day total of 219 strokes. Finishing second with 220 strokes were Don Feryance, Joe Vigil, Dan Herrin and Sean Miller. In third place were Terry Chase, Scott Callahan, Mark Hornbuckle and Todd Hornbuckle with 222 strokes. Carding a 232, good for fourth, were Bret Wedow, Alan Aceves, Dick Hale and Ed Johnson.

BOSS: Turner set to compete in Omaha From Page B1 “They’ve helped me achieve all my goals along the way, and even when I’m not wrestling for the high school, I can always (contact) them for a workout plan or when I’m talking to colleges.” And about those colleges ... Turner isn’t sure where she’s headed next summer, but there’s no doubt she’s on almost every next-level map. Turner said she would like to qualify for an Olympic berth, but knows she can

wrestle with that later. The Devil dandy says she’s leaning toward sports management or business once in college. First things first. Next week, Turner will head to another USAW event in Omaha, Neb. Then there’s her final prep season. She’s proud of what she accomplished. Turner says being a female wrestler hasn’t caused any sideways looks, and opportunities seem to be opening up for female participants in the sport.

“I’ve gotten a lot of support,” said the daughter or Adam and Heather Turner. “I’ve never had a problem with anyone that’s said anything to me about (wrestling as a girl). “But I do know, that with girls wrestling ... there’s still some contradictions about whether we should have the same opportunities as the boys — whether that’s Division I in college or (at the high-school) level. “Personally, I haven’t experienced anything (negative).” Notes: Adrienne’s and

Evangeline’s dad Adam is a mechanic at UC Davis, and mom Heather is an administrative assistant at the Davis public schools central office. ... Regarding Adrienne’s three straight Delta League titles, Rosendale earlier in the year reported: “Women’s wrestling in California is growing, so it’s an amazing thing to say that Adrienne has won (Delta) three years in a row. I don’t think I’m embellishing when I say she is the best wrestler in the history of Davis High.”

reminds her of Davis and is looking forward to the day she can safely venture even farther from campus. And Ochoa isn’t about to let her love of playing softball die. “Another manager is a club player and is trying to convince me to join them when they’re able to play again,” the new Happy Valley resident noted. “So honestly, I’m not really sure what my future in softball holds, I’m just so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the team in any way I can.” — Reach DE sports editor Bruce Gallaudet at bgallaudet41@gmail.com or call 530-320-4456. DUNNING: That KELLY: Midseason report card for the NFL is all for now From Page B1

From Page B1 also had to head for the locker room, which is about as bad as it gets. Not only was he permanently out of the game, he also had to suffer a humiliating walk back to the locker room as 90,000 fans mocked him along the way. It’s one thing to be penalized for a foul. It’s another thing to be treated like a common criminal. Thank heavens the NCAA finally saw fit to allow the player to stay on the bench and cheer his teammates, even if he could no longer join them on the field. I have a few more complaints about college football, but I’m feeling better now, so I’ll save them for another day. — Reach Bob Dunning at bdunning@ davisenterprise.net.

ANNOUNCEMENT

won’t be until 2022 as presently scheduled. The 2018 game was supposed to be at Davis, but unsafe, smoky air conditions forced a last-minute move to Reno. Six years is a long time not to host your traditional rival. An email request to the Big Sky Conference office for clarification — wondering if the 2021 fall schedule would be reworked to bring the Hornets to Davis next November — was not returned. ■ When the Houston Texans take the field today, 41-year-old Josh McCown will be the Texans’ third QB. Rick Nelson’s long-ago tune, “Travelin’ Man,” fits McCown to the letter. Houston is the 11th NFL team to issue him a regular-season uniform. Previous employers include Philadelphia, N.Y.

Hope he’s kept all his jerseys over the years ... ■ Observations at the halfway point of the NFL season: It’s virtually impossible for defenses to cover speedy wideouts one-on-one; game officials are adhering to the “clear-and-obvious” directive in calling fouls; teams projected to be good aren’t; teams projected to be not-so-good are; the NFC East is easily the league’s worst division; Tom Brady may well get to age 45 as a starting QB (he’s 43); and Seattle’s Russell Wilson is the frontrunner for MVP. ■ The Power Five college conferences have each had to adjust, and in several cases, cancel games due to COVID-19.
