UCD sees rise in COVID cases

County low on shots, urges patience BY ANNE TERNUS-BELLAMY Enterprise staff writer

Test positivity rate remains low

The state made it official on Wednesday that anyone age 65 and older may immediately receive the COVID-19 vaccine, but with limited doses available in Yolo County, officials here are asking for the public’s patience. “The issue is supply,” county spokeswoman Jenny Tan said on Thursday. “We do not have enough vaccines to vaccinate everyone at this time.” What doses the county does have are still being used to vaccinate healthcare workers, including hundreds who received shots at a drive-through clinic on Wednesday and more who will at two other clinics scheduled this week. County Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson said on Tuesday that the county will likely have used up all of its available first doses by the end of the week with thousands more healthcare workers still in line. As of Wednesday night, the county had administered about 4,000 vaccines to individuals in Phase 1A, said Tan, including healthcare workers as well as

to acquire and renovate Stollwood in order to create a new home for the Adult Day Health Center. The $4.6 million project will be funded by a variety of sources, the largest of which are two $1.25 million contributions: one from West Davis Active Adult Community developer David Taormino and the other from the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. Taormino and the county agreed to the contribution not long after the West Davis Active Adult Community was approved by Davis voters in 2018. At the time, there was some discussion that a new, larger adult day

UC Davis reported its highest total of COVID-19 cases last week as students returned from winter break to start the new quarter. From Jan. 3 through Jan. 9, the most recent dates with data reported, 148 students and employees tested positive, according to the campus COVID-19 dashboard. Most of the cases were reported through the campus’ rapid testing program for students and employees who are asymptomatic. While the number of positive results on campus set a one-week record, the asymptomatic test positivity rate remained lower than that of the Davis community at less than 1 percent. Additional cases were reported through the UC Davis Student Health and Wellness Center and the campus’ mandatory selfreporting system. “While the positivity rate on campus remains low,

New digs for YADHC Program will move to closed Stollwood site BY ANNE TERNUS-BELLAMY Enterprise staff writer A scene of much heartbreak and tragedy early in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Stollwood Convalescent Hospital in Woodland will be given new life serving the county’s older residents later this year. Back in April, the pandemic hit the facility located on the grounds of St. John’s Retirement Village hard, taking 17 lives. A decision was made later in the summer to permanently close the convalescent hospital. But from that loss came opportunity.

The Yolo Adult Day Health Center (also located in Woodland) has long been looking for a new home to accommodate the ever growing demand for its services, and the many families languishing on a wait list and become financially sustainable. The center provides a range of services for individuals and families throughout the county facing challenges related to dementia, chronic medical diagnoses, mental illness and brain injury. On Tuesday, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a plan for Dignity Health

During the coming seven days, the Davis school board plans to hold three lengthy meetings to discuss when — and how — local schoolchildren should start returning to classrooms for a portion of their weekly lessons. Agendas for these three meetings are not yet available — the agendas will probably be posted on the district website today,

sometime after 5 p.m. But in a phone conversation, the school district confirmed that the meetings are expected to be held: ■ Saturday, Jan. 16, starting at 10 a.m. This meeting will be available to the public as an online Zoom session. Owing to technical issues and schedule conflicts, the special board meeting will not be carried live on local Davis
