Therapy Stores’ downtown permit appealed Thomas Frey Staff writer The Placerville Downtown Association and Friends of Historic Hangtown have appealed the Placerville Planning Commission’s Dec. 1 decision to grant Therapy Stores a conditional use permit to open its business in the city’s historical district. Therapy Stores owners Jing Chen and Wayne Whelan own 11 locations around Northern California and are looking to open the 12th at 339 Main St. — the home of Combellack’s for more than
a century before it closed earlier this year. Attorney Patrick Soluri with the Sacramento law firm Soluri Meserve filed the Dec. 10 appeal on behalf of the PDA and FOHH, listing several reasons why the Placerville City Council should reverse the Planning Commission’s decision at the appeal hearing set for 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 11 Soluri listed four concerns: • The project is inconsistent with the character of Placerville’s Central Business District. • The project may result in business closures and urban decay.
Christmas joy with baby boy Audrey French and Brandon Derieux of Placerville received a very special Christmas present, welcoming their son into the world on Christmas Day at Marshall Hospital in Placerville. Finn Orion French Derieux was born at 8:49 p.m., weighing 7 pounds, 6.7 ounces and measuring 20 1/2 inches long.
• The city may not lawfully approve the project because it has not adequately complied with the California Environmental Quality Act. • The decision may have been the result of an unfair hearing. “Some or all of the Planning Commissioners may have impermissibly prejudged the matter.” Due to being considered a formula business with more than five locations, Therapy Stores applied for and was awarded a conditional use permit n

Ian Book leads Notre Dame to College Football Playoff Thomas Frey Staff writer Each year, only four quarterbacks in all of college football lead a team to the College Football Playoff to determine the national champion. This year, Oak Ridge High School graduate Ian Book quarterbacked the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to that elite level by leading the team to a 10-1 record. It’s his second time doing this. When Book runs on to the Matrix Turf at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on New Year’s Day, his name will be etched in history, joining Jalen Hurts, Deshaun Watson, Baker Mayfield and Trevor Lawrence as the only quarterbacks in college football history to lead their teams to multiple college football playoffs appearances. In 2018 Notre Dame reached the playoff before losing to Clemson. This year, Notre Dame will take on the top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide with the winner taking home the Rose Bowl trophy and heading to the national championship game against the winner of Ohio State v. Clemson. “He’s certainly a dual-threat guy that presents a lot of problems for
us and we’re going to have to be very disciplined in terms of the way we play and everyone doing their job if we’re going to have a chance to be successful against Ian Book and Notre Dame’s offense,” said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. The Rose Bowl is traditionally played in Pasadena, but due to COVID-19 the game was moved to AT&T Stadium — the 105,000-seat cathedral that houses the Dallas Cowboys. It’s the first time the Rose Bowl hasn’t been played in Pasadena since 1942, when the game was moved to Durham, N.C., after the federal government prohibited large gatherings on the West Coast less than a month after the Pearl Harbor attack. But in a year of uncertainty, Book has played some of the best football of his life. The senior from El Dorado Hills has thrown 15 touchdowns and only two interceptions (by far the best touchdown-to-interception ratio of his career) and has done it a year after his top two pass receivers — Cole Kmet and Chase Claypool — left for the NFL. Claypool has 10 touchdowns with the Pittsburgh Steelers while Cole Kmet now plays for the Chicago Bears. Since Book took over Notre Dame’s starting quarterback job during the
2017 season, he has won 88.2% of the 34 games he has started. In his first year as a full-time starter in 2018, he threw for 2,628 yards and 19 touchdowns to help lead Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff where the Irish fell to Clemson. “We’ve just got a good program
