Disrespectful son Dear Annie: Two years ago, I got on my then-17-year-old son for using a very derogatory term for women. I told him that the word should not be a part of his vocabulary, and it would cause great harm to his reputation if he were to use the word in public. He got angry with me. The argument ended with him leaving my home. He went to stay with his mother and didn’t come over to my house for his normal visits for his entire senior year of high school. My son blamed me for the rift and refused to see me. I got married later that summer and even though he said he would attend, he didn’t show up, and neither did my younger son. A year later, I attended his high school graduation and things seemed to be on the mend until, during a discussion, he said he was not sorry for cutting me out of his life for his senior year and doesn’t regret it. His blazon arrogance and narcissistic personality are very much reminiscent of his maternal grandfather, whom he idolizes. This has caused me to not enjoy being around him, and I did not want to spend much time with him the past year. As a parent, should I just ignore the bad behavior and suffer having him around? Or should I continue to refuse to see him until he matures and learns that my wife and I deserve to be treated with respect, requiring him to apologize for his past behavior if he wants to spend time with us? — Dad with Questions Dear Dad with Questions: If you refuse to see your son until the day he wakes up having spontaneously metamorphosized into a mature human being, you might never see him again. But if you silently suffer his bullying behav-

ior, it will poison your relationship. Fortunately, you have other options. Continue to see him as often as is comfortable for you, taking breaks for as long as you need. When you do see him, call out any bad behavior as it arises. If and when he persists in rudeness, firmly (not fiercely) end the visit. It is unlikely that he will become a new man overnight, but he could become a better one over time.
Dreading birthdays Dear Annie: I am approaching my 72nd birthday. I am an only child. My dad died in 1995. My mother was nearly 97 when she died in 2004. Ever since my mom died, I have become very despondent as my birthday approached. The day of my birthday could not go by quickly enough. My wife and my two adult sons walk on eggshells on my birthday. They want to celebrate the day with me, and I want no part of it. I tell them that I would be glad to celebrate the occasion but not until after the actual date has gone by. I was hoping as the years passed since my mom passed away that time would heal. Unfortunately, it has not. Any suggestions? — Dreading the Day Dear Dreading: I hope you don’t mind my saying this, but happy birthday. If you want to celebrate your birthday on a differ-

ent date, then, by all means, go for it. There’s no harm in doing so. In fact, I think it’s a smart compromise: It gives your wife and kids a chance to celebrate you, without causing you undue anxiety. I’d also encourage you to consider seeing a counselor who specializes in grief. Losing a parent is life-altering no matter how or when it happens. The loss of the last parent, in particular, saddles us with not just the devastation of grief but also the disturbing fact of our own mortality. It sounds as though the death of your mom stirred up some feelings in you that never settled. A therapist could help you work through them. ——— Dear Annie: Today, I’m thinking of my parents’ anniversary date, April 3, 1937. What a happy day that must have been for them. I look back and wonder what their plans and dreams were. My mom was just 22, and my dad was 26. The record said that he was a farmer and my mom was “at home.” They are now gone. All of their brothers and sisters are gone. All of their children are gone, too, except for me. After I go, there will be no one left to remember, and April 3 will be just another day. It reminds me of an old empty house you see on a country road; once filled with happiness and laughter, hopes and dreams, but now waiting for the bulldozer. Perhaps heaven is a place where we get to relive our happiest moments. How can such powerful memories just evaporate with time? — Nearing the End Dear Nearing: I wish I had an answer befitting such a big question. All I can offer are a few meager words. Your loved ones

Ex invited to Christmas Dear Annie: My sister passed away in September, and I was really looking forward to spending an evening with her family during Christmas. I’d not really been close with her husband or children in the past, but it’s important to me to spend time with them now. Well, apparently, my ex-husband has been invited to their house, along with his wife of three years. We divorced five years ago, after he verbally and emotionally abused me for 21 years. Admittedly, I left the marriage in a not so great way, with the first person who told me that I was beautiful. This holiday situation has created a lot of tension between me and my children, and it’s heartbreaking. I declined to go, because my ex would be there, and I just don’t want to see him. But I was wondering if you think what my brother-in-law, niece and nephew are doing is right. — Sitting It Out Dear Sitting: I’m so sorry for the loss of your sister. Let’s withhold judgment of her husband and children, who are also deep in grief. Maybe they didn’t even want your ex to come, he just invited himself. That would square with the history of emotionally abusive behavior that you mentioned. Whatever the case, what you are doing is right — because everyone should be sitting out holiday gatherings this year. Fortunately, even from afar, you can still get closer with your niece, nephew and brother-in-law, through video

chats, phone calls or emails. It might take some time to break the ice, but keep chipping away. You will find pieces of your sister in one another. ——— Dear Annie: A few months ago I met a new guy friend, and we have been getting to know each other. However, I do not want a serious relationship with him, and I have informed him of that. I know that he likes me because he calls me “babe” and says things like, “I’m not going anywhere.” So, we were texting one day, and he asked me if I wanted to go get ice cream. I said OK, but when we met up, he said he really didn’t feel like eating; he just wanted to see me. So we drove to my apartment building and sat in the parking lot. We talked for a few hours. Afterward, he told me in a text that he hopes that I will be his girl someday. I know he means that he wants us to be together romantically, but I don’t want to date him because I don’t feel a physical attraction to him. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I don’t want to lead him on, either. In my defense, I already told him that we are friends and that’s all, nothing more. It seems to me that he is not taking no for an answer. Anyway, how do I tell him again gently that we are “just friends” without hurting his feelings so that we can actually remain friends? — Just Friends Dear Just Friends: Sometimes a person can push past attraction to become platonic friends with a former crush. This isn’t one of those times. This man doesn’t want your friendship, and you don’t want his heart. The sooner you accept that you are at cross purposes and go your separate ways, the better for both of you.
