El Dorado County has released an alert, warning residents about emerging COVID-19 vaccine scams. “Scammers take advantage of every opportunity. They’re sly, believable and prey on fears,” the release states. The warning reads: 1. Nobody will need to pay anything out of pocket to get the vaccine. 2. No one can pay to put their name higher on the vaccination list. 3. No one can pay to get early access to the vaccine. 4. No one from Medicare or the health department will contact anyone. 5. No one from a vaccine site, healthcare provider or private insurance company will call to ask for a Social Security number, credit card number or bank account information. To report any such scams in the area call the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 621-5655.

Santa comes early to Blackstone villages Sel Richard Staff writer

A project, which started from a resident’s garage, caught the eye of Blackstone Social Committee Chair Indra Klatt and grew into a five-night event that warmed more than a few hearts on chilly nights. “The fact that we had this wonderful volunteer and his family who wanted to do it was priceless,” said Klatt of the man who preferred to remain anonymous. Could it be Santa? He and his elves gave out more than 400 stuffed animals and 1,000 candy canes throughout the five villages in the El Dorado Hills community, driving down every single street for up to three hours a night. Klatt said she has never seen anything like it. “It was such a wonderful

Converter thefts on the rise Dawn Hodson Staff writer Owners of a Toyota Prius or Honda Accord should keep a sharp eye on their vehicles as catalytic converter thefts are on the rise in El Dorado County and those models are on the top of a thief’s shopping list, according to El Dorado County sheriff’s officials. The catalytic converter thefts in El Dorado County are heavily concentrated in El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park. So far this year deputies have responded to a total of 60 reports of catalytic converter thefts, with 32 of them involving a Prius or an Accord, officials warned in a public Facebook post. “Catalytic converters contain precious and valuable metals such as platinum and palladium and are generally easy to steal,” the warning states. “Just a minute or so under your car to cut out your converter can result in significant gains for a thief.”

EDUHSD Superintendent Ron Carruth said COVID-19 community data will be reviewed at the Jan. 12 EDUHSD board meeting, during which trustees will look into the next steps toward moving to full-time, inperson instruction. “Given the recent spike and increase in COVID-19 cases since Thanksgiving, we understand that coming back ... on Jan. 11 would have exposed some significant challenges,” said Union Mine Principal Paul Neville. “We’re currently working through a shortage of substitutes and developing creative ways to safely bring all students back.” Oak Ridge Principal Aaron Palm echoed similar sentiments. “The data that was coming in just wasn’t in our favor. The California Department of Public Health recently released new guidelines for youth sports, further delaying games and competition. The guidelines will again be reassessed Jan. 4. “Competitions between different teams have been associated with multiple outbreaks in California and across the country,” CDPH officials state in a press release. “Competitions are not permitted as they increase the probability of transmission due to mixing of households, traveling and unavoidable physical contact.” Outdoor, low-contact sports like

Replacing a stolen catalytic converter can be quite expensive, costing $2,500 to $3,000. In some cases repairs need to be made at the dealership, officials note. Steps car owners can take to prevent a catalytic converter theft include always park in a well-lit area; park within a fenced area that is secured at night; engrave your license plate number or your VIN on your catalytic converter; park your vehicle in view of a camera surveillance system; have your catalytic converter secured to your vehicle frame; park in a secured garage, close to building entrances or nearest the road in a public lot and be aware of and report any suspicious persons loitering near or under parked vehicles. Football and soccer must wait until the county reaches to the orange tier (2-4.9% positivity) and basketball and cheerleading must wait until the county is in the yellow tier (less than 2% positivity). “It’s been pretty tough on the players and coaches because we have such high hopes for this team,” said Union Mine head football coach Taylor Duncan. “We have been coaching this group of seniors since they were freshmen and we know how hard they have worked for their senior year.” Duncan said his players are upset the season keeps getting delayed but the players continue to work as if they have an upcoming game. “As a group we feel like this time is a great opportunity to come together as a team,” Duncan said. “I keep telling our players to control what they can control. A lot of times in life, things are out of our control. This is a great time to get bigger in the weight room, get fast, maintain good grades and be positive role models for their classmates and teammates.” For a lot of athletes, missing out on their senior seasons could mean they won’t be able to show off their talents to college scouts. After finishing with 48 catches for 714 yards and five touchdowns as a junior last season, Oak Ridge senior wide receiver Brandon Barthel worked extensively over the offseason to prepare for his senior year. He has been able to participate in 7-on-7 tournaments (non-tackle) in Washington and Utah, where he showed how much he has improved since being a key contributor to Oak Ridge’s 2019 section championship. At the Utah event he scored 15 touchdowns and was named tournament MVP. He has since been offered chances to walk-on at Division 1 schools — University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Southern Utah University — but if the county can’t get back into the orange tier, he said he will miss out on the opportunity to play in front of scouts for other top universities interested in Oak Ridge’s athletes.

very American needs to see Angela Marsden’s tearful video as she pours out her frustrations as a small restaurant owner in Los Angeles. Forced to drastically curtail her business during California’s brutal shutdowns, she took out an $80,000 loan to meet all the expensive requirements to move her dining outside and salvage what was left of her life’s work. Instead, authorities arbitrarily changed the rules and shut her down again — a death sentence for her 10-year-old restaurant. Yet the same authorities permitted a film production company to offer the very same outdoor dining across the very same parking lot the day she had to close her business. “I’m losing everything,” she said through her tears. “Everything I own is being taken away from me.” In Staten Island police hauled a restaurant owner away in handcuffs for desperately trying to reopen his establishment just across the tracks from other restaurants where dining was allowed under precisely the same conditions. When asked to explain these capricious standards, California Gov. Gavin Newsom smarmed, “I’m deeply empathetic.” That must be a load off their minds. The Fifth Amendment in our Bill of Rights specifically protects Americans from being deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. Where are those rights today? Congress is now discussing how to provide relief for the thousands of small business owners, their employees and the families that depend on them who have been crushed by these reckless edicts. As usual, politicians measure their empathy by how much they’re willing to spend of other people’s money. But the fine point of the matter is this: government cannot support the economy for any significant time because government does not finance the economy. The economy finances the government — and when you shut down the economy, you shut down the revenues that go to government. The only genuine relief from the COVID-19 lockdowns is to end the lockdowns. Why is that so hard for some people to understand? By now, it should be obvious that the lockdowns have failed to contain this virus. After nine months of this unprecedented experiment in social engi-

neering, the virus continues to spread. Common sense should tell us that the more infectious a virus and the deeper it has already penetrated into a population, the less effective mass isolation will be. The plight of Angela Marsden and countless victims of these policies tell us clearly what we are very effectively accomplishing: we are destroying our society. We have set in motion countless, avoidable deaths by suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, deferred health treatments and health screenings and poverty that will stalk us for years to come. We have cost our youth a year of their educations. Nearly half of American retailers say they are in imminent danger of permanently closing. Forbes magazine reports, “The No. 1 worry on most small business owners’ minds now is the threat of more government mandated business closures.” Eleven million Americans who had jobs in February don’t have them today. Modern science and its many breakthroughs in immunology, epidemiology and virology has given us advanced treatments and vaccines unparalleled in human history. But science is grotesquely incompetent to reorder human societies or to change the laws of human nature. Nor does it give officials the omniscience to know what is best for every person in every circumstance. Nor does it give them the right to wantonly destroy people’s lives and livelihoods. After all, medicine’s most ancient command is “First, do no harm.” We have arbitrarily and indiscriminately destroyed the life’s work and life’s dreams of millions of Americans like Angela Marsden. We have made the most sacred right of Americans to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” into a hollow and bitter mockery. The American people don’t need the governor’s empathy and they don’t need politicians’ handouts. They need a government that protects their right to make a living and to lead their own lives according to their own best judgment. They need their Bill of Rights back. Starting Dec. 10, Californians could opt in to receive COVID-19 notifications informing them if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for the virus. “Throughout this pandemic we have tapped California’s talent pool to fight this virus and that includes working with tech innovators like Apple and Google,” said Newsom. “CA Notify will help slow the spread by alerting those who opt in to receive an alert if they’ve come into contact with someone who has tested positive. The process is private, anonymous and secure, and is one of the many tools in the state’s datadriven approach to help reduce the spread.” CA Notify is a digital tool that protects privacy and security and does not collect device location to detect exposure and does not share a users’ identities, according to Newsom’s press release. When individuals voluntarily activate CA Notify, the tool uses Bluetooth technology to exchange random codes between phones without revealing the user’s identity or location. If a CA Notify user tests positive for COVID-19, they will receive a verification code text from the California Department of Public Health at (855)-976-8462 to plug into the app — if they choose. Any other CA Notify users who have been within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more of the COVID-19 positive individual will get an anonymous notification of possible exposure. They can enter the code into CA Notify, triggering an alert to phones of people who may have been exposed in the previous 14 days. “When combined with other actions like wearing masks and physical distancing, CA Notify can help curb the transmission of COVID-19,” said Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of the California Department of Health and Human Services. “Every day that is saved in alerting others of a possible exposure is a day that a possibly infectious person can begin self-quarantine and reduce the spread. This technology is another way for Californians to take proactive steps to keep themselves, their loved ones and their communities safe.” The state launched a pilot in September for students, staff and faculty at UC San Diego and UC San Francisco, expanding to include five other University of California campuses in mid-November. “Our pilot experience ... showed this technology was effective in identifying exposed individuals early

for quarantine and testing, and helping keep our communities as safe as possible,” said Christopher Longhurst, MD, chief information officer of UC San Diego Health. “This free and reliable smartphone technology can help all Californians. As we enter a new, and hopefully final, surge in the pandemic, now more than ever is the time to put every possible tool to use to slow the spread of the virus.” Given the privacy-first focus of CA Notify, creators of the app do not know how many students, faculty, staff and patients have enabled CA Notify currently, but UC officials estimate more than 250,000 people are utilizing this technology as part of the pilot. CA Notify has helped identify exposed individuals early, allowing them to quickly quarantine and reduce the transmission of the virus. The performance and privacy of CA Notify has been successfully evaluated through the pilot project and similar programs have been launched in other states, according to the governor’s office. “With the rapid surge of COVID-19 cases, we need every tool possible to protect our communities. We applaud the State for expanding this scalable system so all people living in California have another means of being informed of potential exposures as quickly as possible,” said Dr. Carrie L.
