Actors deftly bring classic to life with just voices By Bev Sykes Enterprise theater critic In a normal year, this would be the month where every theater in the area is presenting some sort of holiday show, from the popular “A Christmas Carol” to more esoteric Christmas shows like “Tuna Christmas.” But the coronavirus has ended all that and theaters are quiet this December. The Woodland Opera House decided to find a way around the virus, to keep their actors working and to continue to entertain the audiences. “It is a challenge to create theater while socially distancing actors and technicians,” said Angela Baltezore, artistic director of the company. The company chose the world premiere of Bob Cooner’s “A Christmas Carol, a Play for Live Radio” (Cooner is also the director). They were looking for a show that did not require actors to interact physically. “Due to socially distancing requirements, we needed to film the show with actors spaced 6 to 10 feet apart,” Baltezore said. “We were looking for a holiday piece and I loved that Bob used this classic work. We all know and love the story. And the radio broadcast style worked well with our distancing limitations.” There is a cast of five (Rodger McDonald, Gil Sebastian, Matthew Abergel, Patricia Glass and Lenore Sebastian) standing at

technician, who gets full screen whenever there are sounds to be made, giving the audience a glimpse at what a 1940s radio show broadcast would look like.

Dean Mora is the organist. “A 1940s audience would gather around their radio in their living rooms and listen to the five actors and sound-effects man create this classic story. Our audiences will gather around their smart TVs, iPads or smartphones and watch this story unfold recorded live on the WOH stage.” The cast rehearsed with playwright and director Cooner via Zoom. They met for two rehearsals on stage in early November and it was recorded live by Mudville Media the following evening. “Adapting Dickens’ tale, which includes dozens of characters, as a radio script for only five actors presented a challenge, but it was a challenge the actors were excited to meet. I wanted to include as much of Charles Dickens’ rich, colorful language as possible — not only the familiar phrases and passages from the original novella, but also a lot of the language that so strongly appeals to the senses,” Cooner said. Each of the actors is able to create his or her character vocally, without the addition of costumes or staging. Gil Sebastian makes a marvelously menacing Marley, while Glass’s Ghost of Christmas Present is so unique it’s difficult to tell which actor is speaking the lines. Lenore Sebastian is wonderfully maternal as Bob Cratchit’s wife. Abergel is the only one of the four who can’t seem to just stand and

PENCE: Nebeker uses colors to show character, emotions From Page B1 dusted with powdered sugar. In addition, the real stars of his show are the early 20th-century artists, most of whom are German or French, and long since departed. We have portraits of many artist couples from the 1910s-’30s, such as Otto and Martha Dix and Paul and Lily Klee, and a few solo artists as well. Nebeker’s faces are painted in the same color palette (and sometimes using the same shapes or theme) as they used in their own art. This period was one in which artists used acid greens, bright orange and violets rather than neutral colors to depict facial features and hair. For them, a person’s character and emotional life was shown by these colors, rather than the simple true colors of their skin, hair and eyes. Thus Nebeker’s portrait of artist Karl Schmidt-Rottloff has a face that is

In all, it’s a fun walk through a period of art-making in European history in which both men and women participated in creative pursuits, and women took a larger role in art schools as teachers, rather than as models.
