El Dorado Hills Town Center hosted its tree lighting event Saturday with Santa and Mrs. Claus leading the crowd in the countdown moments before the shopping center’s signature tree was illuminated thanks to a little magic glitter. Many El Dorado Hills neighborhoods are also lit up with spectacular holiday displays. Want to see your decorated home featured in Village Life? he Oak Ridge High School marching band recently took home a staggering list of awards along with nabbing the Super Sweepstakes for best overall performance scores at the Lincoln Review of Champions in Stockton, cementing its position as one of the elite ensembles in the region. Out of 26 bands in the parade competition, Oak Ridge took first in division for both color guard and marching plus sweepstakes for parade drumline and music. Junior Alex Thompson earned an individual third overall for military drum major. The jazz ensemble also took first place in division. The field show, out of 20 bands, took first place and the High Brass award in division. Schools traveled from the Bay Area, Central and North Valleys for the Nov. 20th event. “We were screaming for The Lincoln Review is one of a solid minute from our five competitions accomplishment this the band entered this semester. The season, with all our hard lineup, which includes Del Oro, work finally paying off.” Oakmont, Folsom and Napa, is one — Sophomore Mason Ciampi that Director of Instrumental Music Paul Varoff has attended ever since he began leading the band 27 years ago. “We’ve always been a very active organization,” he said. “These band kids work pretty darn hard and a lot of people don’t realize it. “We don’t go to these things trophy hunting,” Varoff added, though Oak Ridge typically does bring home its fair share. “To me, it’s more about the experience — the exposure for the students to other programs and receiving feedback and critique.” Despite a stellar showing, Varoff encountered a number of challenges with students unable to play together since COVID-19 restrictions began in March 2020 and at least half the band lacking any marching experience at all.
