THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE
Anxiety after loss Dear Annie: My husband passed away in April after suffering for many years from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I was his caregiver for over a year, along with hospice. It was very hard on me. Since he passed, I have been lost, depressed and have a lot of anxiety. I don’t have much of a support system because my family members have all passed away. I stay at home, grieving terribly. I have suffered from depression for many years. Now the depression and anxiety feel overwhelming. I have been unable to get my meds right, which is very difficult to say the least. I want to get a job so I can get out of the house and have contact with people, but I stress terribly about looking for a job every time I even think about it. I have a lot of insecurities, and I have had trouble with the interview questions on those occasions when I reached out. I just want to get back to a somewhat normal life. My husband was always there for me when I went through difficult times, and now he’s not, of course. I never had anxiety like this, and it’s getting worse. In the past, it was just nervousness. Any suggestions? — Grieving Widow Dear Grieving Widow: I am so sorry for your loss. You have every right to feel sad and anxious. You just lost your partner and best friend. Speaking harshly to yourself about your insecurities is not going to help. Instead, praise yourself for what an amazing wife you were to your husband. Getting your medications right and having the right therapist to support you during
this difficult transitional time of life is very important. Take each day one at a time. Once you get the proper treatment for your anxiety and depression, you can join a grief support group, where you will start to feel better. In time, there is a good chance that you will find a job that will help you “get back to a somewhat normal life.” But we must learn to walk before we can run.
Dear Annie: The letter you printed from “To Let It Go or Not,” about an old friend’s bringing up the time years before when he accidentally walked in on the letter writer’s husband with a naked girl, really burned my buns. Believe me, the “friend” didn’t just accidentally let that info slip. Chances are he deliberately brought up the undesirable incident of the past to throw a monkey wrench into their happy marriage. I have seen this done hundreds of times by family members who bring up wrongdoings of other siblings in front of their children, by co-workers who can’t wait to expose a mistake that otherwise would have gone unnoticed by others, by friends who embarrass others under the guise of joking. It makes me sick to think that these people are so inwardly miserable and insecure that they need to rain on someone else’s happiness. Shame on this “friend” for stooping so low as to try to deliberately hurt their mar-

riage. Shame on the wife for permitting him to steal their happiness. At least now they can recognize this “friend” for what he really is: a jerk! — Living Happily Without Those Kinds of Friends Dear LHWTKF: Well, that’s an aspect of that letter I hadn’t considered. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’d like to think there aren’t that many false friends and saboteurs out there, but you never know. ——— Dear Annie: I have been married for nearly three years. I am not happy, and I am pretty sure my wife isn’t either. Our communication is terrible, especially on my end because I tend to shut down when I am upset. Marriage has not been fun for me. My wife is very insecure and jealous, and she doesn’t want me to have any female friends. I really just want out without breaking her or her 8-year-old son’s heart. How can I break it to her that I want a divorce? A year ago, I mentioned divorce to her, but I took it back because I felt sorry when I saw her crying. I just want to move on with my life. — Unhappy Dear Unhappy: If you keep shutting down when you are upset rather than trying to have open communication with your wife, there is no hope for your marriage. Would it make sense to try family counseling so you could analyze your need for female friends and your wife’s jealousy issues? I would suggest that you try, if only to relieve your feelings of guilt. However, if counseling does not work, then by setting yourself free, you will be setting her free. She doesn’t deserve to be married to a man who doesn’t want to be married to her. It may hurt her temporarily, but in the end, when she and her son find someone who really

loves her and communicates with her, she will be much better off and glad you ended it. You can’t fit a square peg into a round hole, and right now, it sounds like you two don’t fit. But give family counseling a try before calling it quits. You may find the love and happiness that you both felt when you were married. Dear Annie: Our grandson is getting married at a resort that only allows 40 guests. His wife has decided they need to invite friends instead of family. However, her family members are included. We are his only living grandparents, so our feelings are hurt. We are not estranged from him; we see him occasionally. We have not even received an announcement. My husband doesn’t think we should even send a gift. I don’t know how to handle this. — Hurt Grandmother Dear Hurt Grandmother: The bride is practicing a double standard by keeping your grandson’s family away. That is not a recipe for a happy life. You have every right to feel hurt. At the end of the day, it is her decision. Whether you send a gift is up to you. If you feel moved to and there is something you want your grandson to have on his wedding day, then, by all means, don’t be petty, and send him the gift.
Solve your own relationship issues Dear Annie: My wife “Monica” has been having a mostly texting affair with “Mike” for almost two years. There are emails where they address each other with, “Hey, babe.” It is disgusting. I accidentally discovered this years ago, and again recently after I thought they had not talked for years. Upon this discovery, I

texted Mike angrily — he is not someone I actually know, but I took his number from my wife’s phone — and my wife claims that it’s “over.” I’ve heard this before. My wife asked me not to contact Mike’s wife because “they would probably divorce if she found out.” Why would I care about that? My wife thinks Mike is “a friend” and wouldn’t want to see him hurt. I am sure he’s not “a friend” and obviously wants something more. Why should I honor my wife’s wishes here? Doesn’t Mike’s wife deserve to know that he’s in love with another woman? (His words, expressed in an email.) Why do I have to be the only person who knows about this situation? I feel like someone else knowing — Mike’s wife, or maybe my wife’s mom — might shock either of these two people into realizing that they are risking too much by carrying on this way. We have kids, as do Mike and his wife. Why shouldn’t I tell Mike’s wife? Doesn’t she have a right to know about her husband’s infidelity? — Let the Truth Out Dear Let the Truth Out: Yes, Mike’s wife has a right to know about her husband’s infidelity — if, in fact, he has been unfaithful to her. Mike has to be the one to tell her about his feelings for your wife instead of you. Rather than focusing on someone else’s relationship, continue to focus on your own. Seek marriage counseling with your wife. Try to understand why she needs an emotional connection with another man via texting instead of you. Maybe

you will learn something. I know you are hurting about the texts you found — and I am sorry for that — but hurting Mike’s wife will not make it better. Instead, focus on repairing your relationship. Let Mike figure out his own stuff. When we lie to the ones we love, we only hurt ourselves, so my guess is that Mike is already suffering. Best of luck to you and your wife. ——— Dear Annie: Your answer to the parent of the 4-yearold who is not interested in books and can’t sit still left out a possibility. Mom needs to talk to her pediatrician about the possibility that her son has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. The description would make me, a retired pediatrician, very suspicious. If the pediatrician agrees that the boy has ADHD, the pediatrician can help for now with some behavioral management suggestions, but if the child starts having behavioral issues in school — often in first grade — medication may be very helpful and save the kid’s educational progress. — Retired Pediatrician
