THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE

Stuck with unmotivated “grownup” children Dear Annie: I have two grown children living at home. Both are disrespectful to me and to my husband. I feel obligated to allow them to live here since they don’t have anywhere to go, stable jobs or means of transportation. How can I get rid of them and move on with my life? — Tired of Carrying Grown Children Dear Tired of Carrying: Let them stand on their own two feet. Ask your son and daughter to start paying rent or to find their own places. If you feel guilty, as though that’s too much to ask, then just imagine if you were in their shoes: Would you expect your mom and dad to pay your way well into your 20s and 30s? I think not. They are grown adults capable of taking care of themselves. By letting them find that out, you’ll be doing them a favor in the long run. ——— Dear Annie: I’ve been seeing my friend for four years. We’re technically just friends, but there has always been a romantic tension between us. I do call him pet names like “Bae,” and he does the same to me. He’s always insisting that we’re not together. Yet, if I tell him that I’m going on a date, he gets upset. I have no idea what to call our relationship. I just need him to tell me what this is. — Lonely Dear Lonely: I’d call it a con job. He’s using you for validation, to feel attracted and wanted, yet he refuses to commit to you after four years. Stop seeing him. ——— Dear Annie: I felt I needed to comment regarding the criticism from “Call Me From Home,” who was frustrated that people only called her when they were driving, as if they only wanted to talk when they had nothing better to do. I, too, use the free time I have driving to call my mom and friends. However, even when I arrive at my destination (usually home), I have on most calls sat in my car parked in my driveway and continued my conversation until its natural end. Works for me and the person I called. While I understand the writer being miffed, I believe getting a call while someone is driving is better than never getting a call. — Marguerite M. Dear Marguerite: I have to note again that it’s important to exercise extra caution when talking on the phone while driving, as it reduces our ability to perceive hazards. But you make a good point that one shouldn’t feel slighted for receiving these roadcalls. ——— Dear Annie: I am the mother of three incredible adult children. About a year and a half ago, my only daughter just cut me off without any explanation. My youngest son then moved in next door to her and hasn’t spoken to me in almost a year. They both refuse to talk to me. So much has happened since then. My daughter got engaged and since then has gotten married. She did not tell me of either the engagement or the wedding. I had to, unfortunately, find out on Facebook. She did not invite anyone from

ClassAds@DavisEnterprise.net my side of the family. She did invite her dad (my ex-husband) and his new wife. She also invited her new mother-in-law, fatherin-law and brother-in-law and his girlfriend. I have been so hurt I’m at a loss for words. — Mom Cast Aside Dear Mom Cast Aside: One of the hard parts of this job is trying to discern what a letter leaves out. I’m struggling with that here. It would be strange indeed for a son and daughter to both abruptly cut off contact with their mother for no reason. I wonder what their perspectives might be. No matter what happened between you all, though, I’m sure it’s very painful for you to not have contact with them and to miss your daughter’s wedding. It’s natural to be feeling some resentment right now. Counseling could help you work through these emotions and find peace, and I strongly encourage you to give it a try. Your primary care doctor can refer you to therapists, or you can also call the national helpline SAMHSA (1-800-662-4357) to be connected with resources in your area.

Moving somewhere new Dear Annie: I have always dreamed of moving to Memphis, Tennessee, and would really like to do so. It cost so much to get a hotel there, so I know I would need to find an apartment to rent pretty quickly. Can you give me some advice on what I can do as soon as I get there to get situated? I do not have a job lined up, but I would like to relocate there as soon as possible. — Dreaming of Memphis Dear Dreaming: First, save. Second, save some more. You should have enough set aside to last at least three to six months. When calculating your living expenses, take into account rent, groceries, utilities and other daily expenses such as ordering out from restaurants. Be realistic now so that you’re not sorry later. If you can safely do so, travel to Memphis ahead of time to look at apartments. Having a place lined up makes the moving process simpler and less expensive. You’ll be able to move right in, with no worries as to where to store your things, and no need to drop hundreds or thousands of dollars on staying at a hotel room indefinitely. If you are apartment-hunting from afar, then be cautious. On websites such as Craigslist, scammers will often advertise properties that they don’t actually own, in an attempt to steal the fee for a “rental application” or security deposit. It would be safer to work with a rental agent or go through rental management companies. Start applying to jobs before

you move. It’s harder to get a job in a city in which you don’t yet live, but not impossible. Let potential employers know a firm date by when you will be in town and able to work. Having a job will make the transition smoother financially and also socially, as it gives you a chance to meet new people right off the bat. Lastly, a big asterisk to all this: I’d strongly encourage you to wait on moving until the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided. ——— Dear Annie: I have complex PTSD from the first 18 years of my life involving sexual abuse and witnessing violent abuse on my brother and mother. I have found a wonderful therapist and have quieted a lot of the guilt, shame and night terrors but I continue to have low selfesteem, anxiety and depression that I choose not to medically treat because of being 54 and not wanting to increase my chances at dementia. Because of this trauma, am I likely to get dementia because of the damage that was caused from years of abuse? — Concerned About Consequences Dear Concerned: I am so sorry for what you went through and so relieved to hear you have a therapist whom you like. You raise an important issue. The available scientific research does indicate that the stress of PTSD can increase one’s risk of dementia. A review published in September 2020 found that people who suffer from PTSD are up to twice as likely to develop dementia later in life. The exact reasons for this are unknown. A 2018 study noted that PTSD increases levels of cytokines (proteins that trigger immune responses), which cause inflammation that may damage the brain. So, it’s important that you get appropriate and comprehensive mental health care. Talk to your physician and your therapist about what the best course of treatment might be. ——— Dear Annie: I contracted genital herpes 35 years ago when a sex partner failed to tell me he had this virus. Over time, outbreaks became shorter, less frequent and virtually painless. Based on talks with others with GH, this is typical of the virus’ progression. Most claim that the worst thing about having GH is confessing this to a prospective sex partner. I did this recently. “Kenny” and I dated briefly 44 years ago, and then parted to lead separate lives while on active duty. He called me out of the blue last summer, and we began talking and texting every day. We believed we had a lot in common and might someday be together. He regularly expressed his affection for me and often told me how happy he was that we have reconnected, albeit from 600 miles away. I was amazed and grateful. I really believed I’d found a man who was so happy to have me in his life again that he’d stay with me through thick and thin.

in 6 people between the ages of 14 and 49 have genital herpes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HSV-1 (which causes oral herpes) is even more prevalent, infecting around two-thirds of the global population, according to the World Health Organization. There are many ways to have a safe and fulfilling sex life despite a herpes diagnosis. To those who have been rejected after sharing their status with a potential partner, I’d say chin up. Wrong! During a talk about our childhood viral diseases, I made the excruciatingly difficult decision to tell him I had GH. His response was, “Oh, wow!” Then silence, followed by a change of subject. We hung up, and he has not called me or answered my calls since. I am so broken-hearted. Kenny effectively told me that my having GH negated every single good quality that he saw in me. So Annie, what do you say to people like me who do the right thing and to people like Kenny who are on the receiving end of this news? There are a lot of us out there who have GH. — Rejected Dear Rejected: To those on the receiving end of this news, I’d say keep an open mind. HSV-2 is more common than you’d think. An authorization from the Board of Supervisors would not approve the General Plan Amendment or other required entitlements and permits, but is a preliminary step that would allow the proposal to be environmentally evaluated and processed by the Department of Community Services, as per Yolo County Code Section 8-2.223. If the planning and environmental review process moves forward, the entire project would return to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors for separate public hearings before a decision can be made on the General Plan Amendment, comparative analysis, and other required approvals and permits. This request for authorization is statutorily exempt from the Environmental Quality Act.
