Homekey explored for Pollock Pines hotel Eric Jaramishian Staff writer Pollock Pines Realtor Lauralee Green remembers a time when the community opposed a homeless shelter for women and children going in at the old Emigrant Trail Elementary School, proposed in 2008. Now, more than 13 years later, El Dorado County officials are eyeing to convert the Best Western Stagecoach Inn in Pollock Pines into a homeless shelter as part of Project Homekey. The hotel is currently being used as part of Project Roomkey to shelter homeless individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Similar to the approach we’ve taken to Roomkey, we focus on older adults and veterans. We’re just looking for a place to house them while we can provide stabilization services, and then eventually get them permanent housing somewhere out in the community,” Health and Human Services Director Don Semon said.

County officials instructed Health and Human Services staff to start an appraisal process for the Pony Express Trail hotel in May 2021 to determine if the property would make a viable option for Project Homekey. The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will hear an updated appraised value for the property Dec. 7 and will decide at a later time if the county will use the property for Project Homekey. Pollock Pines residents say transparency is a concern, just like in 2008 when the faith-based nonprofit United Outreach proposed its homeless shelter. “If it was such a great idea, the Board of Supervisors would be very public about it,” Green said. In a phone call to the Mountain Democrat Tuesday, Semon explained that community engagement has not started yet since the county is ■

utting down a live Christmas tree in El Dorado County the day after Thanksgiving is a family tradition unlike any other. It’s a day spent in the great outdoors that makes the transition from Thanksgiving to the Christmas season seamless. The most visited tree farms sit in Camino but ones off that beaten path also have lots to offer. From the moment you pull into Twin Pines Christmas Tree Farm in Georgetown it feels like you are arriving home for the holidays. Folks are immediately greeted by owners Jim and Jamie Hawkins, who ask, “How have
