Kevin Christensen Staff writer George Turnboo has captured the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors’ District 2 seat in a close matchup over Ken Pimlott. Turnboo, owner of George’s Pit Stop in El Dorado and pastor of El Dorado Community George Turnboo Church, came out victorious over Pimlott, Cal Fire’s former director, by less than 1% — tallying 11,921 votes to Pimlott’s 11,685. El Dorado County Registrar of Voters Bill O’Neill on Nov. 25 certified all votes cast in the county have been counted. “Our grassroots campaign has achieved victory,” n

ec. 5 will be a day to remember at Burke Junction, when memories of loved ones who died will be honored at the Lights of Life tree lighting ceremony. The event was launched two years ago when residents who were looking to honor their loved ones by purchasing a tree to be placed along the Highway 50 corridor that runs along downtown Placerville were unable to due to the popularity of that tradition, according to Cameron Park event organizer Loretta DeNoon. This year’s event at the popular Cameron Park shopping center, it is hoped, will be the start of an annual tradition, DeNoon said. Lights of Life trees dedicated to a loved one (or loved ones) are purchased for a $20 donation (supports those who cannot pay) and come complete with solar lights and a plaque, provided by Red Hawk casino, with the family’s name and their loved one’s name. will be played featuring two pictures of those being remembered and a loved one will be able to stand up and say a few words as well. The trees will be affixed to the fencing surrounding the Burke Junction retail area and on display the entire month. DeNoon said they have plans for 50 trees but if people would like to sponsor additional trees organizers will keep it going. Nobody will be turned away if they cannot make the $20 donation. To add to the holiday festivities, guests will enjoy music, hot chocolate and and volunteers will be on hand to assist anyone wanting a little extra help decorating. Adhering to COVID-19 guidelines, masks will be required and the trees are placed 6 feet apart for decorating. The tree lighting ceremony begins at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at 3300 Coach Lane in Cameron Park. Questions can be directed to burkejunctionlightsoflife@gmail.com. I had no idea there were rescues at the time.” She named her first German shepherd Maui and said he kept her safe, going everywhere with her during her college days in San Diego. When Williams and her husband Jim Wirfel bought property in Shingle Springs 23 years ago, it was with the intent to help dogs, her breed of choice — GSDs. “I have always had a tremendous connection to this breed, but I love all dogs,” she said, adding that how the German shepherd connects so strongly with their humans is what she loves about them; however, she warned, “They are definitely not for everyone.” Which is why, Williams explained, so many are euthanized. And that’s where Williams steps in. She pulls dogs from shelters that may otherwise be euthanized, giving them a second chance. Her nonprofit rescue organization is not big, but it’s big to the dogs she rescues. She doesn’t take owner surrenders and most dogs she takes in come with
a little or a lot of baggage, whether from lack of training or neglect. She relies on volunteers to help with everything from cleaning kennels to socializing dogs and fostering. The
more fosters Williams has the more dogs she can take in and save. Recently Williams partnered with American River K-9 to hold monthly pack walks, another effort to help

Turnboo wrote on social media Nov. 26. “A big thank you to everyone who supported our campaign. Our team moves forward now to help the residents of El Dorado County.” Turnboo will replace termed-out Supervisor Shiva Frentzen. District 2 includes El Dorado County’s southern communities as well as the Cameron Park/ Shingle Springs area and a portion of El Dorado Hills. Turnboo has said he would bring more businesses into the county, including small manufacturers, bring back logging, build a cogeneration plant for power and create a county FAIR plan to lower the cost of fire insurance and provide more support to local fire departments. He also said he has a 12-step program to put the homeless back to work. Turnboo has lost four bids for a supervisor seat in past elections. “I worked really hard on my campaign this year,” Turnboo told the newspaper the day after the election, noting that during his grassroots campaigning he learned people’s biggest concerns were about roads, power shutoffs and public safety. Pimlott conceded the race Nov. 18. “Beginning with a crowded primary race in March and a long eight months of campaigning with all of the challenges brought on by COVID-19, I am proud of the race we ran,” writes Pimlott in a post on social media. “Although it is not the outcome we were looking for we were able to highlight critical and important issues not only for District 2 but for all of El Dorado County.”

A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home

F
or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.
“We know all of our patients. They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.” Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,
San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills. “Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”
In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself. “I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.
Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.” Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.

Finding light, life and hope in the little things T he holidays are an enjoyable time of the year for me — even in winters of discontent.
Light and hope If you think about it, December — the darkest month of the year — is actually a season of light. Light breaks the darkness and symbolizes hope. Entire neighborhoods decorate to the hilt. In my neck of the woods folks are adding even more outdoor décor. Call it COVID rebellion or holiday cheer. Stringing up Christmas lights (or blue Hanukkah lights) is a strong American tradition. And if you remain in your car as you drive town streets, you are socially distanced as you enjoy glad tidings of the season. In addition to my family’s holiday traditions of singing, shouting and chanting, I enjoy selecting the food. And so begins another annual tradition: thumbing through a treasure trove of cook booklets. I have over a century’s worth of these little advertising gems, the result of 70 years of collecting. My late mother began the collection and I continue to share her passion for good recipes. Both my parents were in product marketing and development so they appreciated the evolution of the mini-cookbook genre, too.
Susan Laird The Arts word to the wise: the covers may not have gorgeous art, since these were meant to be used. Open the pages, though, and a beautiful world will inspire you. The earliest cookbooklets from the Victorian era often feature few-to-no illustrations and the recipes are laid out horizontally. Color pages start to appear in the Edwardian years. As the decades progress beyond 1918, recipes become more vertical in layout. Typeface names go from School House to Art Deco to New York.
Color graphics (which were expensive) begin to appear more frequently in the 1920s. Young flapper wives wear short skirts and have their hair bobbed. No matter the decade, all young customers are portrayed as fashionable and smart. Sensible, older matrons dress more conservatively through the decades and they are portrayed as wise. Some of the food choices of our ancestors are startling. Remember, these people raised most of their own food. “Heirloom” seeds were everyday seeds to them. G-M-O were three letters of the alphabet. Only 20 percent of the population lived in cities. Most folk lived in the countryside until after World War II so introducing a new product took some doing. It had to be better. It had to be economical. It had to taste good. And that meant the ads had to be creative. Seeing how innovative new prodn

J-E-L-L–O At our house no holiday is complete without a delicious JELL-O mold in the liturgical color of the season. When JELL-O was introduced nationwide to America in the ’20s, there were just four flavors: orange, lemon, strawberry and raspberry. Early powder packets of the fruity dessert contained small, accordionfolded recipe papers of delicious “JELL-O salads” that would make every family happy for just pennies a day. Each recipe was illustrated with beautiful color graphics. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the JELL-O Museum in Upstate New York. It has the original oil paintings on display, along with advertising memorabilia.
Depression and war era The focus on the family budget increases in booklets from the 1930s. The hat fashions are the real tip off. The bobbed hair remains, but the skirts are a tad longer. The fashions are beautiful, but not overly frivolous — unless a movie star is promoting the product. Color is still a valued marketing tool but it is usually found in premium booklets that the customer had to send for. Ephemera cookbooklets from WWII (printed 1942-1945) carry a patriotic vein. Most are printed on less-expensive paper. Feeding the family at home needed to be creative. Vital foods were needed for the boys on the front and Americans cut back. Recipes for wholesome meals promoted financial savings, as well as how to leverage food ration tickets to the max.
The American Dream Moving into the 1950s and 1960s,
cookbooklets emphasize peace, prosperity and the importance of caring for the growing family. Mid-century modern is the ideal of those decades. Women are smart and educated in the running of the home, but they are increasingly college educated in fields beyond Maple Street.

Collecting Americana Cookbooklets continued through the rest of the 20th century, but more recipes tended to run in the Sunday coupon section of the newspaper. The graphics and fashions of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s follow true to their decades, but there’s something missing in most of them. With the notable exception of 1976 (our republic’s bicentennial), the tone shifts away from America and to the individual. Care for one’s family is still important but the Me Generation is the primary focus in many pieces. It’s as if the Vietnam War took away more than just our young men. It took away a chunk of America’s soul and selfimage as a good country, too. When I travel in Europe, I notice that Swedes love Sweden. Brits love Britain. The French love France. My lifetime has seen fewer and fewer Americans willing to like — let alone love — their own land. That’s a shame. There’s a lot to take pride in here. This is the country that put a man on the moon. We will send the first woman to the moon and we will send astronauts to explore the solar system. Americans are an innovative people. We come from every nation and ethnicity and religious sect on the planet. We care. And boy, do we love to cook and to embrace every cuisine as our own. As we celebrate the end of the year no one wants to remember, take a look at your family’s favorite recipes and the ideals that inspired them. Dear Shingle Springs/Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce Members, I am honored to have been recently elected as the President of the Shingle Springs/Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce. With this announcement, I should share with you that our past President, Kristin Lannum, has had to step down from her chamber position due to medical reasons, resulting in the Board’s need to fill this role. I know that each of you share the Board’s hope for Kris’ speedy recovery and our gratitude for her years of service and involvement in the Shingle Springs/Cameron Park Chamber. As we work together, you will find that I am a goal-oriented leader who will lead with transparency, integrity and passion. As the 2020-2021 Chamber President, I am honored to work alongside our dedicated Board who all share the same vision and passion for business growth and a healthy community environment. The membership of the Shingle Springs/Cameron Park Chamber is impressive, with both small and large businesses, diverse non-profits, and companies from a multitude of industry sectors throughout the region. However, the Chamber is in what I would call a rebuilding chapter. In this rebuilding phase, we have brought on new board directors and officers, providing a greater foundation to achieve the initiatives we have before us.
