Roy Shoun at 93 is still nobody to mess around with. Here he is at home with some of the medals he earned in the Army, including a Purple Heart and multiple awards for being a sharpshooter.
Even at 93, don’t mess with Roy Dawn Hodson Staff writer Roy Shoun figures that 93 is too early to hold a birthday party. Instead he’s planning a big bash when he turns 100. A man who swears that a daily glass of cold water with a couple teaspoons of cider vinegar in it is the magic elixir that keeps him alive, the Placerville resident has led a varied life as an Army veteran, gold miner and maintenance man for El Dorado Hills long before it was the El Dorado Hills we know today. Born Sept. 18, 1927 in Roda, Va., Shoun’s father was killed in a mining accident when Roy was just 6 years old. He said his mother used the money she received from the mining company to buy some apple orchards, figuring they could use the income as the country was in the midst of the Great Depression and things were tough for everyone. It was during this time he learned to box and he was also quite a swimmer, saying if he hadn’t gone into the Army he would have competed in the Olympics in the 100-meter freestyle. n

The support given to a veteran by family and friends both during service and beyond. First, I would like to introduce my amazing fiancé, Justin, who is here with me today as my support system. Races get close as end nears Thomas Frey Staff writer The El Dorado County Elections Department has counted most of the ballots that will decide several close races in the Nov. 3 election. With all the mail-in and in-person ballots tallied up, according to a Friday update from the Elections Department, in the El Dorado County District 2 supervisor’s race candidate George Turnboo leads by a mere 245 votes over challenger Ken Pimlott. A winner will not be named until the Elections Department finishes counting provisional, conditional voter registration, military and overseas and second issue ballots. All of those add up to about 2,000 more ballots to count plus an unknown number of ballots that could arrive in late mail (ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3). Those ballots will be accepted through Nov. 20. Elections Department officials say verification of provisional and conditional voter registration ballots is time-consuming — another ballot count update isn’t expected until mid-week at the earliest. Votes tallied this week will add to the already record 115,339 ballots counted this election in El Dorado County. The previous record was around
