Open your (check) book for the library Claire Purtich Friends of the El Dorado Hills Library 2020 could have been a very difficult year for the El Dorado Hills Library due to decreased funding. Fortunately, the Friends of the El Dorado Hills Library immediately provided $25,000 to alleviate the shortfall of funds and the community donated $33,000 in response to the Friends’ end-of-year campaign, including a $8,000 match from the Serrano Men’s Book Club. Last year the Friends and EDH Library staff accomplished so much with the community’s generous financial

VETERANS DAY

Local ceremony honors spirited, self less veterans John Poimiroo Village Life correspondent

wo glass ceilings are being shattered by the same person Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Veterans Day ceremonies in Placerville when the first California Air National Guard member and first female veteran is named El Dorado County Veteran of the Year. MSgt. Jennifer Newman, CAANGRet., was chosen by a committee of veterans as Veteran of the Year, from among nominated veterans, for her “extraordinary service to El Dorado County.” Newman was described as a “quiet hero,” giving of her time and talents generously with no thought of personal return. Standing just 5-feet, 1-inch tall, Newman said these words spoken by Dwight D. Eisenhower represent her outlook on life: “What counts is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.” She, indeed, has demonstrated a fighting spirit many times her size.

She is a volunteer hospital aide at Marshall Hospital, has volunteered at the Pope Humane Animal Shelter and has provided consistent and continual person-to-person assistance and referral to homeless veterans and the veterans community as a volunteer at the Placerville-based Military Family Support Group. Most notably, Newman assisted last year’s Veteran of the Year, Leo Cooper, in providing hot meals and frozen prepared meals to veterans in need and created and maintained a veteran case management system that tracks services rendered for El Dorado Veterans Resources and the MFSG. “When others are unable to come in, Jennifer gives up her free time to cover shifts in order to keep the EDVR office running as much as possible and she participates in committees and subcommittees, which is invaluable to the mission of the organization,” praised retired Navy Chief Petty Officer and Veterans Administration Vet Center Outreach Specialist Tim Whalen when

nominating Newman for the honor. Chief Whalen noted Newman’s tireless support of and noble sacrifices for veterans throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and the Caldor Fire, which has been described as the largest emergency response in support of displaced veterans in El Dorado County history. Inspired by her departed husband, CMSgt. James Allan Newman, CAANG, who served with her in the Air Guard, Newman served in Guard personnel and recruiting positions through much of her 21 years of military service. During Operation Desert Storm (the Gulf War), she volunteered to load massive C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to the 129th Air Rescue and Recovery Group, which are used in humanitarian relief, disaster response and firefighting. Following her husband’s untimely death from Alzheimer’s disease, she devoted herself to staying active by volunteering to help others and carries his ■
