Sierra Laundry: Not your everyday laundromat Sel Richard Staff writer Before you dismiss the new El Dorado Hills laundromat as merely a place to bring bulky items to wash in preparation for the holiday season, stop to consider the full-service options owners Rita and Greg Ferrero have built into Sierra Laundry at El Dorado Hills Town Center, their most recent entrepreneurial venture.

“This is not your father’s laundromat,” quipped Rita, a retired tech sales executive.

She and her husband Greg, a former California Highway Patrol captain, just opened their fourth store in the shopping center near Nugget Market and across from Starbucks. Their other locations include Sacramento, Citrus Heights and Cameron Park.

Rita and Greg came to El Dorado Hills in 2007, all three of their children attending Oak Ridge with their youngest a current sophomore there.

“We moved here to have a slower pace of life and be closer to the mountains,” said Rita, adding that the idea of running laundromats was a way to find some work/life balance. “We wanted to do something where we could have more time with our family.”

The Ferreros’ quest for balance has translated into more family time for patrons of Sierra Laundry. Not only can customers drop off laundry to be washed, dried and folded, contactless delivery is also a convenient option. Sierra Laundry contracts with Freshy Fresh cleaners through which both residential and commercial customers can have laundry picked up and delivered, usually with a turnaround time of a single day.

A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home

F

or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.

“We know all of our patients.

They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.”

Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,

San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills.

“Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”

In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself.

“I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.”

Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.

“I look forward to going to work and getting to see who’s on the schedule every day,” said Dr. Stanec.

Mothers, daughters wanted for NCL News release The El Dorado Hills Chapter of National Charity League Inc., the nation’s premier mother-daughter volunteer organization, announces its annual membership drive and has begun accepting applications from women with daughters currently in sixth grade through ninth grade. The El Dorado Hills Chapter is comprised of nearly 240 members who reside in El Dorado Hills and surrounding communities.

“We are excited for the opportunity to welcome new mothers and daughters into our chapter as we continue to create life-long philanthropists who graciously serve the community,” said Terri Young, El Dorado Hills Chapter president.

The mother and daughter members have volunteered more than 2,700 philanthropy hours from April through September. The chapter is partnered with 16 philanthropic and local governmental organizations in the community, including 3Strands Global Foundation, All About Equine, American Red Cross, American River Conservancy, Animal Outreach of the Mother Lode, Blue Star Moms, El Dorado Hills Community Services District, El Dorado Hills Library, El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program, Foothill Dog Rescue,

Hands4Hope, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Snowline Hospice, Special Olympics, Team Celebrate and the Upper Room Dining Hall.

The chapter also participates in the National Charity League’s National Philanthropy Initiatives supporting the American Heart Association, Operation Gratitude and The Kindness Campaign. By fulfilling philanthropy benchmarks and requirements, the El Dorado Hills Chapter has also earned the Pink Rose designation awarded by the National NCL organization.

The El Dorado Hills Chapter of NCL is proud of its collective impact in serving its community.

Strong leadership qualities, a drive to give back to the community and a passion for teaching others are attributes that help place a student on the path of achieving different ranks in this ancient form of martial arts.

Carswell likens it to the military. To gain rank in martial arts one needs to add responsibility. “Why become a general if you don’t have an army?”

Today, Master James Carswell’s army comes from teaching at his taekwondo studio, Cameron Park Family Taekwondo Academy, where his students range in age from 4 to 70-plus, impressing the fact that taekwondo knows no age.

“Parents and grandparents come in to watch and they don’t think that they can also participate, but they can,” he said.

“Taekwondo is more than self-defense,” the instructor explained. “It helps with school, relationships, jobs. It builds confidence. Some kids are bullied; it

helps them overcome that. It teaches how to become a leader. It teaches discipline, improves focus.”

In addition to teaching at his studio, Carswell travels, sometimes to South America, to teach and certify taekwondo judges. He is also in charge of the Olympic Sparring Division for National Tournaments for the United World Taekwondo Association and ever the student, he practices his own Taekwondo mastery weekly with his instructor.

In fact, one of his instructors, Willie Rankins, officially became a Grand Master after 50 years of practicing the art of taekwondo at the same time Carswell became a Master.

“Everyone who walks through the door for taekwondo is on a path to self improvement — be it behavior, discipline, self defense, fitness and so on,” Carswell said. “It’s a truly personal journey that starts with that same core idea of self improvement for anyone.”

“The donors hand off the memories of a lost loved one ... It’s a privilege to take care of those products,” Hairabedian said as he addressed the audience at the anniversary event.

It was new CEO Timothy Meadows first time at the Cameron Park location. Meadows joined Snowline Hospice just seven weeks earlier.

“While I’m knew to Snowline Hospice, I’m not knew to hospice,” Meadows explained. He came from Sutter Health Roseville Hospice.

“It’s a great time to come out and celebrate this location,” Meadows told Village Life. “I am thankful for our donors and volunteers and our way of recognizing this accomplishment. It’s quite an accomplishment

a veteran, will present a keynote address about the importance of family support to veterans.

This year’s award recipients embody service and support to veterans.

A cook with heart Veteran of the Year Cooper dedicated his skills as a cook to helping other veterans. He first learned to cook in his family’s kitchen.

After being drafted into the Army in 1966, he trained as a cook and was assigned to the 339th Transportation Unit in Nha-Trang, Vietnam.

There, he prepared meals for soldiers returning from combat and survived mortar attacks. He later attended the University of Nebraska, where he studied culinary sciences. His cooking skills were honed through a career in institutional, hotel and hospital food service, including at Marshall Hospital in Placerville.

Following the death of his son — one of 22 veterans who takes his life each day — Cooper felt a higher calling to help veterans and to direct his skills and time that no vet should ever go hungry.

A program he coordinates out of the Veterans Memorial Building in Placerville prepares 100 home cooked, healthy and nutritious meals a month for veterans who need meals for themselves and their families. Cooper also assists the homeless/indigent feeding program at Cold Springs Community Church and assists other ministries with their food programs.

Cooper said his aim is to lift spirits, hope and health by combining love, flavor, quality and healthy ingredients for people who get to eat homecooked food too infrequently.

This year’s Veterans Day ceremony will be prerecorded but the El Dorado County Veterans Monument in Placerville will be open. medical offices, resource centers, court appearances and other appointments.

On one trip in 2019 the vehicle he was driving was hit by a heavy, sharply pointed surveyor’s tripod that had been thrown from an overpass. The tripod smashed through the passenger side window and missed killing Page’s passenger only because it landed upside down.

Page said later had the sharply pointed legs of the tripod landed first, the veteran might have lost his life. The award citation notes he, “sought immediate care for the veteran and was compassionate in his response to the mentally ill person who’d thrown the tripod, demonstrating his strength of character in the face of adversity and his deep concern for others.”

Page continues to voluntarily transport veterans to medical and other appointments, all of whom he describes as “friends in need.” In the award citation, Page is noted as demonstrating “time and again that he’s level-headed in a crisis, takes action, gives his all, is extraordinarily compassionate and tirelessly serves El Dorado County’s veterans.”

Receiving the El Dorado County Veterans Alliance’s first Veterans Service and Support Award is Tim Page. The honor reflects the example this retired broker set during a lifetime of military, civilian and retired service, most recently for his dedication to transporting veterans for El Dorado Veterans Resources.

A Navy veteran, Page served as a senior Missile Fire Control Technician aboard the Guided Missile Cruiser USS Sterett (CG 31). He was recognized in 1982 for diffusing a wider international conflict by recommending that his ship light up the sea with star shells rather than open fire after Vietnamese patrol vessels had shot at the USS Turner Joy, and a year later for his service related to recovery efforts following the Soviet Air Force downing of Korean Airlines Flight 007.

At EDVR, he coordinated trips transporting veterans more than 23,000 miles, spending 1,000-plus hours driving and providing some 400 rides for veterans to

Placerville Mayor Michael Saragosa and El Dorado County District 4 Supervisor Lori Parlin will present Veterans Day proclamations.

Although the ceremony will be pre-recorded, the El Dorado County Veterans Monument will remain open to public visits on Veterans Day, as it is every day throughout the year. The county Veterans Monument is located east of Building B at the Government Center at 360 Fair Lane in Placerville.

The Veterans Monument has more than 2,000 memorial bricks and monuments representing the military service of El Dorado County residents and their relations, from the French and Indian War to wars of the 21st century. El Dorado County residents may have bricks, memorializing their military service and that of their ancestors, relatives and friends, placed at the EDC Veterans Monument, as described at eldoradocountyveterans.org/ memorials.

The El Dorado County Veterans Alliance is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization assigned by the County of El Dorado to oversee ceremonies at and improvements to the El Dorado County Veterans Monument.

“They were totally instrumental in getting us off the ground,” Rita said.

“We thought we were done with three laundromats,” she added. “But we felt there was a need with all of the building ... being done in El Dorado Hills and Folsom. So we decided to take the leap and build in our own town.”

It is due to their affection for the community that the Ferreros are launching Wash Wednesdays for a Cause. One Wednesday each month, Sierra Laundry will partner with a local philanthropy group or school and donate 50% of proceeds generated between noon and 10 p.m.

“That’s the fun part of having the store here in El Dorado Hills,” Rita said. “We want to do good things for our community.”

t’s almost Thanksgiving. And although 2020 may have been a difficult year for you, as it has been for many people, you can probably still find things for which you can be thankful — such as your family. How can you show your appreciation for your loved ones?

Here are a few suggestions:

• Invest in your children’s future. If you have young children or grandchildren, one of the greatest gifts you can give them is the gift of education. You may want to consider contributing to a higher education funding vehicle.

• Be generous. Do you have older children just starting out in life?

• Review your insurance coverage. If you weren’t around it would leave some gaping holes — financial and otherwise — in the lives of your family members.

First, consider investing regularly in your 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. The greater your resources during your retirement years the less you may ever need to count on your family.

And second, you may want to protect yourself from the devastating costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. A financial professional can suggest a strategy to help you cope with these expenses.

EID directors reject boundary change ideas Dawn Hodson Staff writer The El Dorado Irrigation District Board of Directors at last week’s meeting voted against a LAFCO proposal to alter its service boundary.

José C. Henríquez, executive officer for the El Dorado Local Agency Formation Commission, noted that periodically the agency is required to prepare a municipal service review in conjunction with an update of an agency’s sphere of influence.

The review provides data on how well EID is operating and where EID’s sphere of influence boundaries will probably be in 10 to 20 years. LAFCO’s last review of EID was in 2008.

Since no one south of El Dorado Hills is currently receiving EID water, one of the proposed modifications was to remove the area south of Latrobe from EID’s sphere of influence. Once removed it could be added back in through a request to LAFCO. Another option would have reduced EID’s sphere of influence to only include specific areas that match El Dorado County’s community regions and rural regions, as defined by the General Plan.

Presented with three different options, the majority of the board voted to recommend to LAFCO that EID keep the present boundaries with board Chair George Osborne asking, “If it’s not broken, why fix it?” Adding that it’s not costing the district anything to keep the current sphere of influence.

With that, the board voted 3-2 to stay with the present boundaries with Directors Osborne, Pat Dwyer and Lori Anzini voting yes and Directors Mike Raffety and Alan Day voting no.

EID General Counsel Brian Poulsen reminded the board that ultimately the final decision will be up to LAFCO and the board’s vote was just a recommendation.

Legislative report The board also received its annual legislative report for 2020 by Bob Reeb who acts as EID’s state Legislature advocate.

Reeb noted the “significant” impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the normal course of business in the state capitol with access severely limited due to legislative offices being closed for most of the legislative session.

The financial impact has also been considerable. Initially Gov. Gavin Newsom expected a $6 billion revenue surplus for 2020-21 but his revised budget now reflects an estimated bud-

The arbitrator is usually a retired judge or professional arbitrator. Hearings are usually closed; the arbitrator’s decisions are final with no judicial overview or appeal. Any judgements awarded are legally enforceable.

My most interesting arbitration case was one that wasn’t. Both parties had agreed to arbitration when the purchase contract was signed. During escrow the seller secretly sold the property for a higher price to another buyer for all cash. The buyer filed an arbitration claim for damage. However, the seller refused to arbitrate. The buyer then had to file a lawsuit in civil court to compel

get deficit of $54.3 billion by June 30, 2021. And despite tax revenue for 201920 coming in $1 billion more than projected, Reeb said the Department of Finance now projects the state is facing an $8.7 billion deficit by June 2021.

Because of the COVID-19 related shutdown of the economy, Reeb said the surplus the state had built up has largely been spent and the additional federal funding the state hoped to receive related to the coronavirus has yet to arrive, triggering an additional $11 million in cuts that went into effect his month. That resulted in a two-day furlough for state employees. And while revenue projections are going up so are expenses for things such as unemployment insurance and social services.

The state also suffered five of the six largest fires ever recorded in California this year with over 8,300 wildfires since the beginning of the year burning more than 4 million acres in the state.

Because of the funds being poured into suppressing wildfires, the state is having to move money around to support the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund.

Newsom also signed Executive Order N-82-20 setting a first-in-the-nation goal of conserving 30% of the state’s land and coastal waters by 2030. The order directs the California Natural Resources Agency to identify and implement near-and-long-term actions to accelerate the natural removal of carbon and build “climate resilience” in the state’s natural areas.

Previously the legislature directed the State Water Board to establish water loss standards for all public water systems in California to reduce unaccounted for water loss due to such things as leaking pipes or malfunctioning water meters.

A first try at developing a model did not work and the water board then developed a different one. Reeb said the fear is that if it is put into effect it will not only cost water districts money trying to reduce water loss but become a priority over other goals previously set out in urban water legislation.

Reeb said the state is also monitoring voluntary agreements on water quality and fish habitat as those may be changed, affecting how much water can be retained from snowmelt and used by water agencies.

As a final note, Reeb said he believes Democrats will retain two-thirds control of both houses of the Legislature, which will impact future legislation.

The state’s next legislative session begins Dec. 7.

T

he weather is changing and the nights are getting cooler. What a wonderful time to cozy up with a nice cup of tea. The exhibit, Teatime, including oil paintings by Victoria Brooks, mosaics by Martha Jones and a selection of teapots from the ceramics classes at the Gallery at 48 Natoma will start Nov. 13 and continue through Jan. 14, 2021.

Total immersion When this exhibit was planned more than a year ago, the artist Brooks explained, “Little did I know I would be painting for this show during the COVID lockdown. It was such a strange time with my other

shows and exhibitions, as well as travel being delayed or canceled. I now had a challenge and purpose to paint for the future. I totally immersed myself into this project. Borrowing teacup collections from friends, I set up three still life stations in my studio and painted outdoors when the weather permitted. I was not limited by size. The largest painting is 24 inches by 24 inches and the smallest is 6 inches by 6 inches.

After a successful career and many national awards as an art director in television and motion pictures, Brooks pursued her love of painting, which she has been doing for 20 years. In addition to being a talented studio artist, she is an accomplished plein air painter as well. She has won numerous Best of Show awards for her studio and plein air works. Brooks loves teaching oil and watercolor painting and is a favorite

of art clubs for her informative art demonstrations.

She teaches plein air painting workshops in California, Italy, France, Ireland and Greece.

Brooks is a signature member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society and the American Impressionist Society. She also is an artist member of the Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Plein Air Painters of New Mexico and Plein Air Painters of Hawaii.

PAA 54th art show features nationally recognized artists Carolyn S. Dyle Contributor

arlier this year Placerville Arts Association was a little nervous about producing a major art show in the midst of a historic pandemic.

Would enough artists submit their finest creations to produce the quality exhibition it has always delivered? Would the group be able to open the gallery in the midst of pandemic health guidance recommendations?

Should the association produce the show virtually?

These concerns have been resolved and artists from around the state and out of state have risen to the occasion and submitted an impressive collection of fine art for this year’s Mother Lode Art Show. This year’s show will feature works from California, Hawaii, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Texas. The show is open for viewing both in person at Sacramento Fine Arts Center as well as online.

Born in New York in 1963, Connelly has been a practicing professional artist since the 1990s. Noted for installation, performance and mixed media

November 15 – El Dorado Western Railroad Train Rides

The El Dorado Western Railroad is up and running. First run was Sunday, Oct. 25, out of the El Dorado Station off Oriental St. in El Dorado. Runs are at 10, 11, 12, and 1. Come join us Sundays from the El Dorado Station (off Oriental St.) for a train ride to from the Station to Missouri Flat Rd. The ride runs around 40 minutes.

Recommended donations are $8 for those 9 and older and $3 for those 3 to 8. We are practicing COVID precautions, so masks and social distancing are required in the station area and onboard the train. Our cars are set up with a plastic partition so that we can have up to 2 family units of 4 per car. Families of 5 to 8 persons will have the car to themselves. We are disinfecting our cars before and between runs. See you on Sunday!
