Hyper-involved school administrators Dear Annie: My 10-year-old’s school administrators are overthe-top nosey and won’t stay out of our business. I think they mean well, but at times, they try to micromanage the care of our child. For example, his favorite pair of shoes are falling apart, and although he has new shoes, he prefers the old ones. The school sent home a pair of shoes, as if we couldn’t afford to buy any. It seemed insulting and passiveaggressive, and my son liked those shoes even less than the new ones we’d bought him. So that was a waste. Also, our son recently had a cut that became infected. The school nurse spotted the beginning of the infection, so we are grateful for that, though we were watching it closely, too. We took him in immediately and began treatment. The school sent home notes about where we could take him in case we could not afford a doctor. (We can and have never implied that we don’t have the means or insurance.) The administrators even sent instructions on how to give him a bath using Epsom salt for the wound. They know that we are both professionals with advanced degrees, yet they treat us like nimrods. — Capable With a Cub Dear Capable: Unless the school addressed the note home to “Mr. and Mrs. Nimrod,” you’re jumping to conclusions. I guarantee that the administrators were just trying to help. Your son really shouldn’t wear shoes that are disintegrating — no matter what he “prefers.” A 10-year-old might prefer to eat pizza rolls three meals a day and play Xbox all night; that doesn’t mean you let him. We make concessions where we can as parents, but some matters aren’t up for debate. Make your son wear the new shoes, no matter how much whining follows. (I know, I know. Easier said than done.) Sometimes cubs need tough love. ——— Dear Annie: My brother-in-law keeps borrowing money, and my husband just can’t say no to his big brother. This wouldn’t be a problem if we were Rockefellers. We’re not. We both work full time. We have kids of our own to put through school. We are barely scraping by and even have debt. We’re just not in a position to lend money. Larry, my brother-in-law, seems to have a new career every year. This year, he’s trying to get his real estate license. Last year, he started an online store, which never took off. In the past, he’s tried photography and painting. It’s hard to watch him fail, and I would feel sorry for him if I weren’t so ticked off that he’s flushed thousands of our dollars down the drain along with each of these new enterprises. And now I find out that behind my back, my husband co-signed a loan, which his brother defaulted on, and we had to take out a second mortgage on the house to pay it. How can I get my husband to stop giving him money? How can I stop resenting both my brotherin-law and his wife for this? — Broke and Bitter Dear Broke: You’re right. He’s wrong. But you probably married him because you fell in love with his generous disposition and his desire and willingness to help others in need — qualities at play here. Recognize that big heart of his while also telling him it’s unacceptable to make such decisions behind your back. Tell him that his continuing to do so would be a betrayal of your trust. Encourage him to support his brother in ways that have no bearing on your finances. He could help Larry work out a budget or set realistic career goals. In the long run, that kind of aid is better than simply handing him a check whenever he’s in a pinch. Teach a man to fish. ——— Dear Annie: Back-seat drivers are an absolute pet peeve of mine. I have been driving for 20 years, and I’ve never been in an accident, except one time when I hit a mailbox with my sideview mirror, and never had a ticket, except that one time in upstate New York. I’m not an aggressive driver. I let people into my lane all the time. I don’t try to drive fast, but I am busy (and frequently late to things) and do try to keep up with the other cars around me. However, from the way some friends react when they’re in my car, you’d think I’m Danica Patrick. And my husband is the worst. He constantly makes com-

ments: “Stop tailgating.” “Slow down.” “You’re driving really fast.” And when he’s not verbalizing his thoughts, I can see him bracing for impact by grabbing the handle above the car door. People’s constant feedback about my driving is getting on my last nerve. How can I instill in them the confidence to enjoy the ride when I am behind the wheel? — Driving Me Crazy
Dear Driving: Well, you can start by being a better driver, because I doubt everyone who rides in your car is overreacting. You’re sending your passengers into survival mode, and they’re blurting things out in selfdefense, not picking on you. Consider enrolling in a defensive driving class for adults. Many insurance companies even offer discounts for completing such courses. At the very least, I suggest you revisit the basics of driver’s ed: Adjust your mirrors (while the car is still parked) to avoid blind spots; leave a car length in front of you for every 10 miles per hour of speed, etc. And leave the house earlier so you’re not in such a rush to get places. Those back-seat drivers will gladly hand over their keys, so to speak, once they see that you can steer them to safety. ——— Dear Annie: I have two healthy, beautiful kids — one boy, one girl. My daughter is 6, and she is really into reading. She can’t wait to go to bed and devours her nighttime reading material. She was reading on her own before kindergarten. She sounds out words and sits and listens and figures things out. But my son is 4 and can’t sit still. I open a book and he gets up. When it’s bedtime, he has zero interest in any of the books on his bookshelf. We’ve tried every book there is, from Dr. Seuss to Eric Carle to Shel Silverstein to Mo Willems. These kids have the same genes. How can one be so into books and the other want nothing to do with them? — Reading Rain-bro Dear Reading: You’re raising siblings, not clones. Of course they won’t have identical aptitudes. Although there’s no definite “right” age by which all kids should be reading, it usually happens around age 6. It sounds as if your daughter was a bit of a prodigy. As long as your son is in the healthy range of his age group and is getting a hang of the prereading fundamentals (such as identifying letters), he should be fine. Don’t give up on trying to get him excited about books, though. Read to him for short periods of time to hold his interest. Pick stories about subjects he loves. Your son may never be the bookworm your daughter is, but the bottom line is he will go to college knowing how to read. ——— Dear Annie: I am a 14-yearold girl. I have known “Mia” since the third grade, when we instantly became the best of friends. Unfortunately, things have not been great with us lately because Mia spends so much time on social media. She has been constantly “chatting” with different people, who are complete strangers, over the internet. She has even met up with some of these people in person. I am worried that she may be putting herself in danger. What is so sad is that she has a messed-up family, and nobody is supervising her when it comes to social media. I am nervous that she will send naked pictures of herself or get lured into prostitution or something else terrible because she does not have good judgment and is not making smart choices. What should I do? Please help. — Concerned Friend Dear Concerned: Your worries are 100 percent justified. It’s not just that Mia may put herself in further danger; she already is putting herself in danger by talking to strangers online and even meeting up with them in person unsupervised. You need to enlist the help of your mom and dad. They can talk to Mia’s parents or

Getting a career off cruise control Dear Annie: I’ve been working at the same car dealership for five years, since I graduated high school. When I started, it was just a job. I thought I would do this and then figure out what I really want to do. Then I started to make some money, and I got decent at selling. A week turned
into a month, which turned into a year, and here I am at 23. I got married last year, and my wife and I now have a 6-monthold baby girl. She is the love of my life, and I wouldn’t trade her for the world. But part of me regrets that I never went to college before starting a family. I don’t want to be a car salesman my entire life. I’d really like to pursue a degree and study business. I am only 23 and know that I have a long way to go, but the past five years have flown by so quickly, and I want to make sure that I am not on a path I will regret. I love my daughter and her mother. I don’t hate my job, but I can’t imagine doing this for the rest of my life. What should I do? — Stuck Salesman

Dear Stuck: Car salesmen get a bad rap, but really, it’s not an easy job. They have to be persistent, quick-thinking and good with people. If you have the finesse to be a good car salesman, you can probably do pretty much anything you set your mind to. Look into seeking a degree online or through a local college that offers night classes so you can continue working and supporting your family while laying the groundwork for a new career path. The U.S. News University Directory can match you to a reputable online program that meets your needs. The skills you’ve honed over the past five years will take you far. With real-world experience plus a degree, you’ll be firing on all cylinders.
