lay is essential to learning.” Noting numerous studies, El Dorado Hills Library Youth Services Coordinator Sandra Kelsey shared her excitement that the library has fully embraced this concept with its Early Literacy Play Center — a place in the library where children ages 0-5 learn by doing, whether its shopping at the farmers market, building on the LEGO wall, exploring shapes on the light table or playing with dinosaurs. Kelsey, who has worked for the library for eight years, explained that play helps children hone their reading skills, fine motor skills and storytelling abilities — all necessary for learning. The toys, puzzles and games in the Early Literacy Play Center are designed to teach without the kids even realizing it. A closet filled with additional toys, games, etc. will ■

Some El Dorado Hills homeowners getting a refund for park delays Sel Richard Staff writer Residents within the Carson Creek and Heritage Park Landscape and Lighting Assessment District will get a few extra bucks in their bank accounts via a partial reimbursement for fees paid on a park they have yet to enjoy. In a letter to the El Dorado Hills Community Services District Board of Directors, El Dorado County AuditorController Joe Harn pointed out that special benefits must be identified, quantified and calculated to confer a direct advantage upon each property in the assessment district. “The purpose of this assessment district is to provide funding for the maintenance, installation and operation of improvements for a new ■

amilies displaced due to the Caldor Fire received some much-needed assistance from the Assistance League Sierra Foothills earlier this fall. Working with El Dorado County schools, Assistance League Sierra Foothills volunteers identified 111 families displaced by the Caldor Fire. On Sept. 25, 48 families and 85 children, ages pre-K through 12th grade, were greeted at the Placerville Walmart where families were handed vouchers and gift cards and the children were able to participate in a shopping spree to replace lost items such as clothing and school supplies. “I searched for many years to find the right nonprofit ■

consortium of professional advisors recently donated more than $8,000 to Caldor Fire victims through the newly formed Advisors Giving Circle, a fund launched by the Planned Giving Committee of the El Dorado Community Foundation. As co-chairs of the Planned Giving Committee for the past two years, long time El Dorado County residents Catherine Heath and Jeff Wood lead an education campaign to teach financial advisors how to give back to the community through planned giving.
