THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE

Celebrating while being mindful of others’ struggles Dear Annie: After years of fiscal discipline, my wife and I have paid off our mortgage. We contemplated having a mortgageburning party to celebrate but were advised this would be in poor taste and akin to bragging. While we are justifiably proud, we don’t wish to offend anyone. What is your opinion? — Paid in Full Dear Paid: I would advise against hosting a mortgageburning party even if we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic and an economic downturn in which 30% of Americans have missed housing payments and an estimated 30 million to 40 million renters are on the brink of eviction. But the current climate does put a fine point on it. By all means, celebrate what is indeed a major life accomplishment, but keep it to a party of two. ——— Dear Annie: I wanted to share a solution I’ve found for sleeplessness. For the last two years, I could not get a good night’s sleep. Doctors offered pills and artificial hormones, but I did not want to go that route. By chance, I read director David Lynch’s memoir, “Room to Dream,” where he credits Transcendental Meditation with improving his mood, energy and creativity. I thought that maybe TM could help my sleep. I found a TM instructor on a beautiful horse farm. The training is 90 minutes of one-on-one instruction, followed by additional instruction for about 90 minutes a day for three days. I believe most of the instruction is taking place virtually right now due to the pandemic. In my case, the initial 90-minute session was in person and the rest were on Zoom. After seven days of practicing for 20 minutes, twice a day, I was sleeping eight to nine hours a night, only waking once a night. I am so grateful. TM is not a religion; I still attend my church and have not changed my faith.

The fees are scaled to income. To learn more, go to TM.org or read NIH Psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal’s book “Transcendence,” for research on TM for depression, addiction, anxiety, PTSD and even high blood pressure. — Sleeping Much Better in Memphis Dear Sleeping: I know several people who have greatly reduced anxiety and improved their moods overall through the practice of Transcendental Meditation. I had not heard of it for sleeplessness, but that makes sense. Thanks for writing.

Dear Annie: To the letter from “At a Loss with the Lovable Lush” regarding the brother-in-law who drinks too much, you responded by starting with suggesting talking to his wife. I’ve been in AlAnon for over 30 years. This guy is an adult and is responsible for his own behavior. Talking to his wife makes her feel responsible for his behavior. She doesn’t need that! His offensive behavior should be directly addressed with him and not when he has been drinking. Families of problem drinkers are suffering and do not need to be put in an impossible situation. The wife had no control of her husband’s behavior and should not be expected to do something about it. — Rose S. Dear Rose: Thank you for this astute and important point. I was too preoccupied with the complex interpersonal dynamics of this situation that I overlooked the simple solution. After reconsidering, I agree that it would be better for the letter writer to talk directly to his brother-in-law (when he is sober), rather than talking with other family mem-

New love won’t replace old Dear Annie: I was troubled by one particular sentence in the letter from “Missing Love,” who wanted another relationship after his wife died. He said, “My problem is that I still love her.” My husband died four years ago, and I can assure Missing Love that he will continue to love his wife, and that is a FACT, not a “problem.” What lame sort of love would it be if it just came to a screeching halt with her death? In time, he might even come to see that love as a blessing, not something in need of a solution. He may or may not find love again, but if he does, the new — and much different — love will find a place beside the old one, not in place of it. — Missing Love, Too Dear Missing Love, Too: Your letter touches on the power of love and the different forms it can take. Just because someone is physically gone from this world does not mean their spirit or love are gone. You have a wonderful approach to coping with loss while finding a new person to love. Thank you for writing. ——— Dear Annie: I am a retired educator, and I thought “Recently Retired Educator” was too tough on substitute teachers. I taught chemistry, and it was virtually impossible to find a substitute teacher who was qualified to fill in for me. Anyone so qualified would be holding down a fulltime position somewhere, and I knew that. So I rarely used sick days because I was concerned about who would fill in and how my students would fare. When I felt so badly that I really did not care about such things, I knew it was a day to call in sick. I always had a lesson sitting on my desk that any substitute could use with very little preparation: a worksheet or problem set that students could work at in small groups to develop their skills with very little

input from the substitute teacher. Substitute teachers are amazing people. They take a telephone call at 6:00 a.m. with instructions on where and when to arrive, preside over a classroom and subject matter that might be unfamiliar to them, with a group of students they don’t know. If the principal needs somebody to fill in for some extra little duty, the sub will likely get that added on to their assignment. And the pay is lousy — not enough to live on even if you are employed four or five days a week. The best motivation for the sub is that they might be able to make a good impression on the principal and perhaps have a better shot at a full-time position. Yes, some substitute teachers are really good, and some are marginal. But when you consider what they have to do and how they are rewarded, I am amazed that there are people willing to fill the need. Bless them. — Also Retired Educator Dear Retired Educator: Thank you for your letter. It adds a nice level of understanding of the life of a substitute teacher.

Respect for elders Dear Annie: I love my wife. We’ve been married for 11 years, but recently, she hasn’t been taking my side with anything involving our 14-year-old son. She tells me that I am overreacting or being stubborn. OK, I know I can be stubborn, but I firmly believe a child should show respect to his parents. Right now, my problem is that I can’t do a thing in my own house without asking permission from the 14-year-old. Say someone calls and he asks me, “Who are you talking to?” Or, if I go outside, he asks, “Where

are you going?” When I tell him that I’m the adult, that I don’t answer to him, he replies that his mother gets onto me for getting onto him, so I just need to tell him everything. And if I get onto him and yell because I’ve told him over and over not to do something, then I’m the bad guy because I lost my temper. I’m just tired of being ignored and disrespected all the time. Anyway, I try to talk to my wife about showing a united front in front of our son, but since he isn’t biologically mine — I just adopted him — she tells me that she won’t because I’m wrong all the time. What should I do? — Frustrated and Tired Dear Frustrated and Tired: Trying to speak with your wife and show a united front is a great idea. Her dismissing you and saying that you are wrong all the time is not the best way to communicate. At this point, you might have to seek the help of a professional family counselor. It is important for your 14-year-old son to learn to respect you and your wife. It will serve him well in life. If you don’t teach your son proper manners and respect for you, his parent, he will sadly have to learn that lesson in the real world. Being disrespectful to a teacher or a boss can have serious life consequences. When you express your frustrations to your wife, explain that to her and that you are coming from a place of love and wanting what is best for all. As for the process of gaining respect, remember that small victories should be celebrated. Try and focus on any subtle changes you see in your son, and remember, he is 14. Most teenagers have streaks of rebellion, of “disrespectfulness.” This can actually be healthy if it is done in a safe way and you are all talking about it. Also remember that when you lose your temper, you only make matters worse. Try to stay calm during these more tense moments. With the help of a professional, I’m hopeful you will all live harmoniously.
