Sel Richard Staff writer El Dorado Hills residents battle on to remove 50-foottall lights at the future Heritage Park, located off Carson Crossing Drive in the midst of the over-55 active adult communities Heritage and Four Seasons. Although Heritage developer Lennar Homes has now offered to remove the lights at no cost to the El Dorado Hills Community Services District, CSD board members remain resistant. In accordance with initial plans, lights for tennis, pickle ball and bocce ball courts were installed, but the district agreed to designate park hours from dawn to dusk with no evening lighted courts after a petition was submitted by neighbors. Lennar representative Chad Roberts was at last week’s CSD Board of Directors meeting to reiterate the developer’s commitment to the removal, which he estimated would cost $60,000. More shake up at the Planning Commission Sel Richard Staff writer On the heels of the recent removal of District 2 Planning Commissioner Cheryl Bly-Chester by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, District 4 Planning Commissioner James Williams has now vacated his seat. “It breaks my heart,” James Williams Williams said, sharing that his resignation will allow him to focus on his family and his business, Ponderosa Auto Express in Cameron Park. He said much of his ability to donate time to commission duties was attributed to his reliance on a key employee who has taken another position. Williams explained that the loss is compounded by the lack of quality workforce currently available. As to recent accusations from Bly-Chester of vote negotiation and ex parte communications, Williams assured his resignation is in no way related. “The timing sucked but

EDH shed fire spreads to home Village Life staff El Dorado Hills firefighters responded to a residential fire on Colby Court Sept. 15. At approximately 8:30 p.m. crews arrived at the scene. The fire started in a shed near the house and broke through the home’s first- and second-story windows, where it entered the residence, according to EDH Deputy Fire Chief Michael Lilienthal. The fire also burned the surrounding trees, fences and landscape bark, he added. The blaze, which was determined to be accidental, caused approximately $200,000 in damage.

Chamber, EDHCSD dissolve partnership Sel Richard Staff writer El Dorado Hills Community Services board member Ben Paulsen took issue with an Aug. 20 internal news release by the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce, announcing the seeking of new community alliances. “One of our partnerships with the El Dorado Hills CSD, Saturday Night in the Park, has been a longstanding tradition in our community. Unfortunately, the CSD has made the decision to take over this event,” the chamber release states. “I just wanted to highlight some facts that weren’t mentioned in that press release,” Paulsen said at the September EDHCSD Board of Directors meeting. He explained that for the past decade, the CSD has covered almost all aspects of producing the concert, including the venue, security, maintenance, stage as well as promotion.

Paulsen later shared that in the past, the chamber has been given event spaces at no cost, which chamber officials have in turn sold to their members. The district notified the chamber that this year’s event would have only 20 spaces available instead of 50 and asked that the chamber return 50% of its profits to the CSD. “This return of profits would avoid any gifting of public funds,” he said. He went on to maintain that the chamber denied several CSD attempts to become a premier member and that the district suggested trading event space for a Premier Partner level membership. “Debbie denied this offer,” he said, referring to EDH Chamber President/CEO Debbie Manning. “We then offered to pay the price for a Premier Partner membership in support of the chamber, which she also denied. “Instead of taking us up on the 20 spaces and working together,

she denied the 20 free spaces and sent out a press release stating that we wanted to take over the event and that we withdrew from the community partnership,” Paulsen continued. “The reality is that we didn’t end the partnership, she denied it. I’m shocked, to say the least.” Nonetheless, Paulsen insists the district is still interested in being a Premier Partner with the chamber. “We will be exploring different programs to increase the impact of our #KeepItLocal focus,” Manning said. “On behalf of our Board of Directors and myself, we welcome open dialogue to clear up the unfortunate misinformation shared by Director Paulsen,” she shared with Village Life in response to Paulsen’s Thursday evening invective. “The El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce has always remained committed to collaborating with all community partners.”

EDH Chamber cash rebate stimulates local economy News release The El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce recently announced a successful end to the El Dorado Hills CHAMBER CA$H Recovery Rebate program. Launched for a second consecutive year on May 1, the rebate program offered $10 cash back for every $100 spent at local, small businesses or the option of donating rebates to local nonprofits. February 2020, but didn’t take a position on lighting at the time. “Admittedly, over the coming months, Lennar’s position evolved as we realized the level of opposition that existed to those lights. If it were a private park we would have just removed them, but it’s a public park,” Roberts explained, asking for authorization to remove the lights. “We view it as a problem at this point and we want to be a part of the solution.” Resurfacing courts to prevent trip and fall liability was a concern presented by the board members, who also asked to see how the lights would look turned on and if installing lower lights would be an option — a project estimated at $225,000-$300,000 in a May 2021 CSD report. Board Vice President Sean Hansen contended that removing lights at the park would set a precedent incompatible with county attitudes toward growth. “This area has already been designated as a primary area of growth by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors,” he insisted. “If we take down these lights, we’re going to say no to developing lights above our new high school football stadium. We’re not going to be able to develop Promontory Phase 2, we’re not going have the opportunity to have soccer fields, baseball fields, football, bocce, etcetera if we cave to this request to make this a dark community south of 50 … I regret my vote a year ago to not allow after-hours dusk to dawn play. “They’re pretty darn tall, I agree with that,” conceded Hansen. “I don’t want to just pull those out. I think that we should work together, maybe cantilever them or put some other things in.” He

assured that CSD references to premier facilities do not mean tournament play and instead indicate the high quality of amenities. Board President Noelle Mattock pointed out that the Heritage retirement community itself has lighted courts. “It’s literally across the street,” she said. “The lights in the park are more focused, more directional and do not bleed.” Several community members reiterated their aversion to the lights, including resident Sue Williams, who noted that park plans changed significantly during her two years in the Heritage community. “Things can be changed and should be changed,” she said. “Our county’s growth is not going to be affected by a couple of lights that are being taken off.” “Those lights are going to light up our whole neighborhood,” maintained resident Shauna Johnson. “I would guess that none of you would want to step out to those lights every single morning if you lived there. This gentleman is offering to take those lights down at no cost to you so I don’t see what the problem is.” Resident Roberta Chisam called in to voice fears that the lights will bring non-residents into the park after dusk. “Save [the lights] for Bass Lake Park or the new high school but we don’t need them in our community,” she declared. Subsequent discussion revolved around the possibility of reducing the height of the lights rather than removal, to which Roberts replied, “Lennar does view removal as the appropriate option but of course we welcome the opportunity for further discussion.” No board action was taken.

The Caldor Fire impacts EID’s infrastructure

s I write this column, the Caldor Fire is 67% contained and continues to burn. And while the fire remains active, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the valiant efforts of fire protection services who fought and continue to fight to safeguard our communities. My thanks and gratitude goes to dedicated El Dorado Irrigation District teams who acted quickly to protect infrastructure as best they could, while always ensuring staff and public safety. While some important EID water infrastructure has been spared, we know now that we have lost some sections of our important flume system. Soon after conditions allowed, EID personnel began initial damage assessments. The assessments have confirmed that four flumes have suffered significant damage and must now be replaced. Four of the sections of EID’s canal and flume system destroyed are located more than 20 miles east of Placerville, perched on steep, hard-to-access terrain along the south side of Highway 50. EID’s 22-milelong Project 184 system has a mixture of above ground flumes and in-ground canals. Some flume sections, especially those rebuilt in recent years as part of the district’s ongoing capital improvement program,

are made of concrete. Many older flumes, however, are made of wood. EID continues to replace the wood flumes with concrete each year. The flume sections that burned are the 400-foot-long Flume 4, the 179-foot-long Flume 5, the 146-foot-long Flume 6 and the 325-foot-long Flume 30. At its Sept. 13 meeting, EID’s Board of Directors approved a $17 million contract to repair Flumes 4, 5 and 6. Flume 30 replacement, a project already approved in August that would have been undertaken over two years, must now be accelerated into a single phase and be completed as quickly as possible. District staff is working with our insurance carrier, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency for potential reimbursement of these costs. As I indicated in a public release just after we learned of the damages, I want to again let our customers and community know that the loss of these flumes does not mean we will run out of water. EID’s water system is a complex, interconnected system that allows us to make operational changes to continue to safely deliver water from other sources, such as Sly Park’s Jenkinson Lake, even with the loss of the flumes. The areas that depend most on the

flumes for their water, including Camino and Pollock Pines, are able to be served by Jenkinson Lake water delivered to Camino and then pumped back toward Pollock Pines. In normal operating years, each fall season the flumes are shut down for about three months to perform important annual repairs and undertake construction projects. With the damage to these flumes, that shut down period comes a month early. As soon as the Caldor Fire broke out, EID personnel immediately began to optimize emergency water storage levels in its Forebay Reservoir in Pollock Pines in the event the canal and flume system was damaged. Our customers and community are now benefiting from increased storage in Forebay as a result of a recently completed project to raise the dam by 10 feet. Raising the dam at Forebay allowed the district to not only meet the needed regulatory improvements, it also allowed us to recover lost reservoir storage capacity from 94 years of sediment deposition. We are thankful for that storage as it will help us bridge the gap between the end of summer when demands are higher and the fall period when water demands are reduced. As a result of ongoing drought conditions, the district is currently under a voluntary call for a 15% reduction in customer water use compared to 2020. With this reduction, EID estimates that water supply will be adequate to meet customer demands. I encourage all EID customers to look for ways to reduce their water usage. Murder highlights broken criminal justice system

ate Tibbitts can’t make this plea to you. She can’t cast a vote or call a legislator or sign a petition for change. She can’t install a security system or add another deadbolt to her Sacramento home. Kate Tibbitts is dead. She was raped, murdered, her pets killed and home set on fire by a transient career criminal. Her innocent life ended in horror. Her death, while heartbreaking, is not surprising. Kate’s tragedy can be traced back to political trends and liberal policy decisions that, if not reversed, will leave a longer trail of victims behind. The recall election succeeded in highlighting California’s dysfunction. This administration will be forever linked to raging wildfires, massive and inhumane homeless camps, Employment Development Department fraud and French Laundry hypocrisy, but what most symbolizes Newsom’s reign, and the madness of the Legislature, is the upside-down view of crime and punishment. The saddest and most profound symbol of Newsom’s tenure is Kate Tibbitts’ tombstone. California is conducting a real-time experiment implementing the “de-incarceration” philosophy, which paints the criminals themselves as victims of “the system” and considers their imprisonment the true injustice. This is the animating thought behind

the emptying of our prisons and the no-cash bail push in the Legislature. Newsom’s administration recently went all-in for deincarceration by sidestepping the Legislature and unilaterally greenlighting the early release of more than 70,000 of felons back on to California streets. Expect a crimewave to follow. It’s hard to end up in prison. The myth of a prison sentence for a first-time offender for marijuana possession may be politically appealing to some, but it’s mostly imaginary. Our prisons are stuffed with hardened criminals — violent felons who get paroled and commit new felonies to get back in. Troy Davis, the suspect in Ms. Tibbitts’ murder, has a rap sheet that would defy the belief of a law-abiding citizen. A local newspaper reported Davis’ list of charges includes resisting an officer, battery on an officer, possession of methamphetamine, threatening an officer, misdemeanor sexual battery, assault and battery, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and other unnamed crimes in June 2021. He was also, according to the paper, arrested for auto theft this past June and released with zero bail, per state policy. He did not show up for his arraignment and became a “parolee at large.” One-man crime scourge Troy Davis should be in prison. Kate Tibbitts should be alive.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Recall disappointment EDITOR: y mother didn’t tell me “life is not fair,” So you can imagine how I feel as a conservative right now. I’m not really mad at the results of the recall. I just don’t understand why liberals don’t understand how it feels to always, always, always lose. Do they think we deserve it because we don’t think like them? Or is it our selfish human nature kicking in? It must be wonderful that they get their way all the time. I don’t blame them for loving it. And since I believe in a free country, I support their right to think the way they do. This is what it really amounts to: conservatives in California have very little representation. Our representatives are badly outnumbered. The main reason for this is that both types of state representatives in California are based on population. The big cities with the most people are typically liberal so they rule. I don’t understand why both of these state representative groups are based on population since the U.S. Congress has the House based on population and the Senate with two representatives per state, no matter what the population. So, this brings me to two concerns. 1.) Since the northern part of California is disenfranchised, why were efforts to separate from the southern part of the state denied? Isn’t it an American principle that justice should prevail? Shouldn’t we all have representation in political matters? And when that doesn’t happen, shouldn’t a solution be found? 2.) Our courts didn’t seem to recognize there is some similarity to the founding of our nation. The revolution occurred because there was taxation without representation. Do the courts and liberals see that conservatives feel the same in California? Shouldn’t we expect representation and justice as much as anyone? I’m not suggesting that liberals should not be heard. But I am suggesting that without representation, we should have been let go to start a state where we have a voice. Was letting us go too hard? Hard is not a good enough reason to deny us the right to freedom. Justice should take precedence.

But we’ve recently built a system where it’s hard to get in to prison and easy to get out. “Realignment,” Proposition 47 and Proposition 57, Newsom goodtime credits increase, Newsom-mandated zero cash bail — all of these policies are pillow-soft on crime. They rob law enforcement of power and the ability to hold criminals accountable. Society suffers as crime explodes. Greenhouse gas reduction is not a concern for Kate Tibbetts. It doesn’t matter that she can’t get a single-use plastic bag at the grocery store or a plastic straw at a restaurant. She can’t get a subsidy to buy a Tesla or install rooftop solar. While Newsom and the Legislature focus on fashionable, leftist, elite concerns the real state has fallen apart. Basic government services, such as public safety, which includes punishing criminals to hold them accountable as well as keeping them off the street where they commit more crime, have taken a back seat to self-congratulatory moral grandstanding. Kate’s last moments must have been grisly. I pray for her family and friends who will deeply mourn her death. No legislation can undo her loss. No policy will prevent wickedness. But we absolutely cannot facilitate it. The simple fact is that career criminal Troy Davis could not have killed Kate from his prison cell. I plead with you all — support policies that punish crime and maintain our civil society. Our lives depend on it. Sen. Disturbing development EDITOR: n Aug. 31, instead of attending to the Caldor disaster which had 50,000 of our county neighbors displaced, some permanently, the Board of Supervisors spent two hours discussing the removal of District 2 (George Turnboo) Planning Commissioner Cheryl Bly Chester. After two hours they voted 3-2 to remove her. There was only innuendo — he said she said — but no facts given. When I was on the board we had several bad actors who needed similar removal but always the board made a concerted effort to meet in closed session to discuss the issue. Closed sessions do not always yield a record either. Some board members rather count to three to jam their will down others’ throats. Still, they stimulated frank or animated discussions allowing the entire board a full understanding of the problem, perceived or otherwise. It was disclosed Supervisors Turnboo and Lori Parlin did not have benefit of all the facts and no effort was made by Chairman John Hidahl or the initiator Supervisor Sue Novasel to educate either. The public was completely in the dark about the issue(s). Absent facts the public can only conclude Bly Chester’s ouster was a direct result of her animated objections to Parker Development’s map approved by the Planning Commission weeks ago. From start to finish Chairman Hidahl and Supervisor Novasel made their intentions clear. In her opening statement Supervisor Thomas made

our women are blooming beautifully in preparation to compete in the annual prestigious El Dorado Rose Pageant typically held at the El Dorado County Fair. This year’s pageant, rescheduled due to the fair’s cancellation, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at the American Legion Hall Post 119, 4561 Greenstone Road in Placerville. The fortunate winner picked will have the honor to represent El Dorado County at a variety of public events and affairs and her history of valued volunteer work displays the heart of her title. To be eligible, a candidate must be at least 60 years old, have lived in El Dorado County for at least 10 years and have contributed non-career volunteer service to the community.

Coco DeCarlo DeCarlo is sponsored by Gold Country Retirement Community and has been a resident of El Dorado County for 43 years. DeCarlo has volunteered for Las Ayudantes, Cub Scouts, 4-H, Georgetown Founders’ Day, the Elks Lodge, Progress House and Christmas Baskets on the Divide. She wanted to raise her children where there was plenty of outdoor opportunities like the snow and water sports her family enjoyed. In 1978, when an opportunity arose they moved from Southern California and settled in El Dorado County. Once rooted, as one who has always enjoyed volunteering and helping others, DeCarlo looked forward to giving back. She has been volunteering since she was 14 years old — then as a candy striper. “I started young enjoying giving back to a community, especially our beautiful community,” DeCarlo said. “Since COVID-19, other than offerings to clothes closets and driving folks needing rides, my contribution has been handing out blessing packages to the homeless. She is currently a receptionist in our retirement community and has also driven our bus and has worked serving our residents in the dining room. We have had many El Dorado Roses

living at Gold Country and still have a few here with us: Clara Nielsen and Normadene Carpenter.” Raines noted, “We believe it is a worthy program to honor a senior lady who has given a lot to her community. We love our seniors here at Gold Country — so many have done wonderful and interesting things in their lifetimes. We are all rooting for Coco at Gold Country.” “If I’m selected as El Dorado Rose I will carry out my duties with my court and introduce people to all that our community has to offer and tell them about our rich history,” DeCarlo said. “I look forward to meeting and greeting people. Ellen Fischer Fischer is sponsored by the Placerville Shakespeare Club and has lived in El Dorado County for 56 years. Her volunteer service includes Brownie Scout Leader, 4-H, Youth for Understanding and the Food Bank of El Dorado County. “I feel very fortunate to live and work in beautiful El Dorado County; we have so much here,” she told Village Life. She has also volunteered to help with our annual spring rummage sale, the fashion show and worked in the kitchen to prepare lunches for the membership. “She has been a volunteer for the Mother Teresa Maternity Home in Placerville for 15 years and most recently joined the Emblem Club in Placerville, where she plans to continue her community volunteer work,” Burnley continued. “She has resided in El Dorado County for so many years, we think that she would be an outstanding person to represent the county at the many special events that happen throughout the year.” As El Dorado County holds many community events local and county-wide to promote county culture, agriculture, history, artists and musicians, great outdoor attractions and more, Fischer shared her excitement in being a part of promoting El Dorado County. “I am looking forward to participating in events around the county, especially the county fair and various parades so I can proudly represent El Dorado County as Ms. El Dorado Rose.”

Gatha (Gay) Willyard Willyard is sponsored by her son, Eddie Willyard Jr., and she has resided in El Dorado County for 41 years. Willyard’s volunteer service includes 4-H, El Dorado County Fair, El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce, El Dorado Hills Community Services District, Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills, El Dorado Hills Community Council, Apple Mountain Golf Course and El Dorado Hills Community Emergency Response Team. As a member on the Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills Board of Directors, Willyard has helped planned fundraising events such as the Oct. 2 pasta feed that will help people impacted by the Caldor Fire. She also recently volunteered for the EDH Brewfest hosted by the EDH Chamber and is a board member and special events director for the El Dorado Hills Newcomers, currently helping plan a fall event. Willyard spends additional free time volunteering and filling various roles with the El Dorado County Taxpayers Association. Willyard has deep roots with the El Dorado County Fair Association, for which she is the director. She also is an Adopt-a-Spot gardener on the fairgrounds and has two gardens she has been taking care of since 1982 and 1994. Willyard recently received training to serve for the El Dorado Hills CERT. In this role she’s currently helping El Dorado County Animal Services care for displaced animals due to the Caldor Fire. “I like to meet new people and be involved in making the area where I live in a much better place to be and come home to,” Willyard explained. “I like to help plan fundraising activities and attend the various events that happen all the time. I volunteer my time whenever possible. When I’m not doing that, I’m playing golf or gardening.” Willyard Jr. has many reasons to sponsor his mother beyond her being his mother. “She has always been an active volunteer ever since we moved here in 1980,” he shared. “She got involved immediately and stayed active. She’s really made a difference in our county, both culturally and educationally. “My mom enrolled my sister in 4-H and quickly became a leader and core

As they say, ‘It takes a village,’ so of course there were many people involved. My mom was a key contributor and she did this for years, even after my sister was out of it.” Willyard Jr. commends his mom for logging so many volunteer hours, it’s practically a full-time job. And her above-andbeyond efforts have benefitted many. “At some point, through her 4-H connections, my mom and dad started a petting zoo at our county’s annual fair. She got people together from all over our county and gathered all sorts of animals from across the area into a format where the whole community could enjoy and learn about them. They got a lot of people behind them and got a lot of people to help, of course,” he recalled. “She saw how much this could mean for our fair and community and how many people she knew across the county with all these animals. She had this idea and then turned it into reality. The petting zoo was at our county fair from 1986 until 2002. It was a great thing for our fair and for our community. “I pick these two things (out of many) to tell you because I think it’s the epitome of what you would want in a rose of El Dorado County,” he added. Willyard Jr. noted there was a time his mom couldn’t volunteer. “My mom is a hard worker. She’s a tough gal and she perseveres and gets things done. She and my dad passed that down to my sister and I and we are forever grateful. Underneath it all is a wife and mom who loves her family. I really got to see that growing up when she had to stop volunteering for a few years to take care of her mom in the last years of her life and then shortly after that taking care of my dad’s mom after she developed Alzheimer’s. She brought her up from L.A. to care for her in her own home. I always admired that. I feel that her dedication, hard work, commitment and care would make her an ideal El Dorado Rose.” “I believe it is important to get involved in the community you live in and strive to leave it a better place than when you got there,” the Rose candidate said.

Moore’s volunteer service has been for the Historical Society, Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, El Dorado County Western Railroad, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Friends of the Bayley House and National Civil War Association. Born and raised in California, Moore is active in the Native Daughters of the Golden West and other prominent historical organizations. Moore’s devotion to spending her spare time promoting and educating residents and visitors about El Dorado County’s rich history was praised by Jill G. Kearney, president of the El Dorado County Historical Society. “Our society board accepted the idea of sponsoring Colleen Moore as El Dorado Rose last spring right before COVID-19 shut down pretty much all social activity. Colleen has been such a great volunteer with not just our group, but so many other community organizations,” Kearney noted. Kearney explained how Moore started volunteering for them. “The El Dorado County Historical Society has had the pleasure of her involvement since 2003 when she jumped in and began organizing raffles and fundraisers, helping man booths with historical information at functions like the county fair, Clarksville Days and Wagon Train and helping as a docent at the Fountain & Tallman Museum in downtown Placerville. Kearney said she admires how Moore always puts so much energy and heart into whatever she does while keeping things down to earth and simple. “That’s probably why she did so well as a blacksmith, volunteering at the Marshall Gold Discovery Park from 2005 to 2012,” Kearney said. Continuing with a list of Moore’s volunteer activities, she added, “Colleen helped with operations of the El Dorado Western Railroad in 2015, a living history branch of the county museum that offers visitors rides on the rails and a real glimpse into our county’s past commerce of logging and agriculture.” As a member of the Friends of the Bayley House since 2003, Kearney advises readers who have an interest when driving out to Cool to ask Moore about the old house. “If you see a repetitive thread in her interest, it’s history and community,” noted Kearney. “It was simply a hands-down, no-brainer for our group to support her in this friendly contest of the El

Traveling Tales presents magical, online folktale News release

ee The Elephant Theatre & Dance Company based in Placerville has launched a new pilot program for El Dorado County children and youth. See The Elephant will create productions and performances that address current issues children face today and make these available to local schools, families and organizations serving youth. The goal is to provide these arts education resources at no cost to schools or children’s families. “Arts education is a vital component to kids’ learning,” said Tiff any Van Camp, See The Elephant program manager. “The arts help us to process our experiences, to express ourselves and to use our imaginations. This is especially important as kids have experienced such challenging things recently.” See The Elephant’s first Traveling Tales production, “The Bluebird, The Fox Witch & The Story of Stumptown,” is based on a folktale, re-imagined for local audiences. This story was created during COVID-19 with a team of local artists, often working remotely. “Initially, we had hoped to tour a live theater production to local schools,” Van Camp said. “Like so many, we had to find new ways to create in challenging times.” The result is a three-part film that uses shadow puppetry and 2-D color puppets. Kylie Balentine, a local artist currently studying animation at California State University, Long

Beach, designed the characters from which the puppets were created. Balentine called the experience “the opportunity of a lifetime” and said she loved the collaborative process. “I think the film itself is indicative of just that; when you watch it for the first time you truly get a sense of the crew members’ individual creative contributions coming together,” she shared. “The end product is something very unique — a film that captures the heart and soul of our community. “Working on Traveling Tales actually helped me to discover what I’m passionate about in the animation field, which is character design,” Balentine added. “I fell in love with the process of interpreting what the characters were going to look like and how they would exist within the story. There’s really just something so amazing about drawing from the script and getting to conjure up designs that will help bring a story to life. It’s magical.” “We want to use puppetry and performance to ignite the imagination, lift spirits and foster empathy,” Van Camp explained. The film is paired with educational guides and tutorial videos. These free resources can be used in the classroom, at home or in any other setting with youth. The Traveling Tales team encourages viewers to create their own stories and art works, which will be published on the website — a collection of creations from local youth. “The Bluebird, The Fox Witch & The Story of Stumptown” is live and available at TravelingTales.net.

Individuals secured their rappelling spot by each raising a minimum of $1,000 with many participants exceeding that fundraising threshold. “We were thrilled to be able to cohost an Over The Edge fundraiser — a first for our local BBBS agencies in this region,” said Brenda Frachiseur, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Northern Sierra. “The monies raised

NARCAN awareness campaign launched News release The Sierra Harm Reduction Coalition with support of the El Dorado County Opioid Coalition has launched a NARCAN awareness campaign to inform the community on the importance of the medical device and how to use it to prevent overdoses. The campaign is inspired by comprehensive research the coalition completed pinpointing distribution points of NARCAN in the county. The research reveals that not enough stakeholders carry or distribute the device and there is a general lack of education about the importance of NARCAN amongst community members. “Increasing awareness of what

the signs of an overdose and distribution points in the county. The campaign also features an infographic that debunks myths surrounding NARCAN and how to use the device. The campaign materials are available to any community members to share within their organizations. Sierra Harm Reduction Coalition is a California Department of Public Healthauthorized syringe service program, providing a suite of harm reduction services throughout the West Slope of El Dorado County to improve the quality of life of people who use drugs.
