Traveling Tales presents ... magical folktale

News release

See The Elephant Theatre & Dance Company based in Placerville has launched a new pilot program for El Dorado County children and youth. See The Elephant will create productions and performances that address current issues children face today and make these available to local schools, families and organizations serving youth.

The goal is to provide these arts education resources at no cost to schools or children’s families.

“Arts education is a vital component to kids’ learning,” said Tiffany Van Camp, See The Elephant program manager. “The arts help us to process our experiences, to express ourselves and to use our imaginations. This is especially important as kids have experienced such challenging things recently.”

See The Elephant’s first Traveling Tales production, “The Bluebird, The Fox Witch & The Story of Stumptown,” is based on a folktale, re-imagined for local audiences.

This story was created during COVID-19 with a team of local artists, often working remotely.

“Initially, we had hoped to tour a live theater production to local schools,” Van Camp said. “Like so many, we had to find new ways to create in challenging times.”

Needle Nellies to host outdoor quilt show

Lynn Schardt Needle Nellies, Quilters on the Divide

The Georgetown Rotary Park will be alive with colorful, handmade quilts, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept 18. The Needle Nellies’ 18th annual outdoor show will include a raffle for 12 beautifully filled and themed baskets, the sale of tickets for this year’s opportunity quilt (New York Mardi Gras), a catered luncheon available for purchase, as well as the everpopular boutique where attendees may buy fabric and sewing-related treasures at bargain prices.

This year’s art display will also include the Nellies’ 2020 challenge project: a wall hanging depicting scenes of the Divide, to be arranged on the side of the park’s iconic miner’s cabin built by the Native Sons of the Golden West.

Entry into the show is $5 and most of the displays will be in the shade under the trees on the lawn of the Rotary Stamp Mill Park. Parking is in the gravel lot inside the gate of the park, as well as along Harkness Street and across the street in the Post Office parking lot.

This year’s opportunity quilt was designed and crafted by members of the club using both a technique called “paper piecing” and hand appliqué to render this spectacular version of a New York Beauty patterned quilt. The New York Beauty is a pattern inspired by the crown on the Statue of Liberty and each square is unique. Tickets for the quilt are $1 each, $5 for six, or $10 for 15 tickets. They will be available to purchase at the show; the drawing will be held at 1 p.m. the following day at Founders’
