Loellen (Loie) Rocca Bonser

Jan. 11, 1925 – Aug. 6, 2021

Loellen (Loie) Rocca Bonser, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and 60-year resident of Placerville, passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside Aug. 6.

Loie was the youngest child of Bernard T. Rocca Sr. and Blanche C. Rocca and the wife of Dr. Quentin Bonser, M.D. After growing up within walking distance of University of California, Berkeley, she spent every summer of her adolescence at the Echo Lake Chalet, which was built by her brother and operated by her mother along with all the young women in the family (the “Boat Girls”) during the World War II years. She met her husband Quentin at Echo Lake. Loie was a 1944 graduate of UC Berkeley and the two were married in 1945.

In 1961, the couple moved with their four young children to Placerville. Both were active in the local community. Known to generations of Girl Scouts by her camp name, Flash, Loie started fi rst a Brownie Troop for her daughters and then a Girl Scout Day Camp that was originally held at Lion’s Park, then Charles Woods in Camino and later at Sly Park near Group Area 5. After running the camp for over 30 years and leading girls as they hiked, canoed, swam, camped, sang around campfi res and shot archery, Sly Park renamed an area near Group Area 5 “Flash Mountain” in her honor.

Loie also for many years served on the city of Placerville Parks and Recreation Committee, where she was instrumental in securing funding for and developing Gold Bug Park. Alongside her husband, she also supported the formation of the Mathewson Bonser Nursing Scholarship. It continues to grow and provide funds for local Marshall Hospital nurses to continue their education.

Loie had a passion for daily dog walks, swimming, her community, travel and of course her family in whom she instilled her love of nature and the great outdoors.

She is survived by her son Wayne Bonser (Marina); her daughter-in-law Cathy Bonser; her daughters Patty Sanford (Marty) and Carol Gunter (Ernie); her 11 grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren, her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Quentin Bonser; son Gordon Bonser and granddaughter Heather Bonser Bishop.

Donations can be made in her honor to the Mathewson Bonser Nursing Scholarship in care of Marshall Foundation for Community Health, the city of Placerville Gold Bug Park, or a dog rescue site of your choice.

CHP: Make Labor Day travel safety a top priority

California Highway Patrol

The Labor Day weekend is here and many Californians are preparing to close out the summer with a road trip. In anticipation of the increased tra c that often accompanies a holiday weekend, the California Highway Patrol will implement a maximum enforcement period.

The holiday enforcement e ort begins tonight at 6:01 p.m. and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6. To help keep motorists safe o cers will focus on removing impaired drivers from the road. Impairment can be caused by more than just alcohol — it also comes from cannabis, illicit drugs and prescription drugs, or a combination of any of these.

Tra c safety e orts by the CHP during the 2020 Labor Day maximum enforcement period resulted in more than 900 arrests for driving under the infl uence. Sadly, 46 people died in crashes throughout California that weekend — many of whom were not wearing a seat belt.

“Our o cers are dedicated to making the roadways safe for all who use them,” said CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray. “Driving sober or designating a sober driver is the responsible choice to keep you, your passengers and other motorists safe.”

All CHP o cers and sergeants have received additional training on detecting impaired drivers. California also has the nation’s highest number of drug recognition experts — an o cer specifi cally trained to identify drug impairment. During the upcoming holiday weekend drug recognition experts will be on duty throughout the state.

Anyone aware a driver is impaired, is asked to keep a safe distance and call 911. Be prepared to provide the dispatcher with a complete description of the vehicle, license plate number, location and direction of travel. That telephone call may save someone’s life.
