The Caldor Fire tears through forest at Echo Summit Monday night as the blaze pushed its way down into the Tahoe Basin.

Flames charge east

Dr. Samuel Ceridon, regional medical director of Marshall Hospital’s Community Health Outreach Department, has been visiting Caldor Fire evacuation camps with medical strike teams to help evacuees with any medical needs. Nurse Shaunda Crane had already been working with this outreach team and staff from El Dorado County Public Health when the pandemic began. The teams help the at-risk and homeless population, visiting homeless sites and helping to provide minor medical assistance, access to vaccinations and other

The first of an anticipated two-day wind event triggered an evacuation order in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning as the Caldor Fire continued to burn its way east. More than 53,000 El Dorado County residents have now been evacuated, according to the state Office of Emergency Services. By Monday evening the forest fire had reportedly crossed Echo Summit and was encroaching on the Christmas Valley community south of Lake Tahoe. Firefighters performed structure defense overnight Monday in the South Upper Truckee Road area, behind Tahoe Paradise Golf Course near Mandan Street and Apache Avenue and also in Christmas Valley where flames were burning on both sides of the canyon. Crown fire runs and embers cast out as far as three-quarters of a mile are helping the fire spread. Firefighters say the blaze was also active in the Silver Lake area, the blaze’s eastern front. In the lower elevations strong, down-canyon winds Monday night tested control lines east of Pleasant Valley and in the Grizzly Flat/Fair Play area. More than 33,600 structures are threatened by n

RVs are parked at the park-and-ride off Ray Lawyer Drive in Placerville Tuesday afternoon.

Evacuees asked to move out of Placerville park-and-rides Krysten Kellum Associate editor As more personnel and equipment are bound for Placerville to fight the Caldor Fire, Placerville officials are asking evacuees who have set up at city park-and-rides to relocate. Cars, trucks, boats and RVs can be seen filling portions of park-and-ride parking lots throughout the city. Placerville Police Chief Joseph Wren said he has confirmed there is space at local evacuation sites for evacuees. “These evacuation sites are set up with resources to support you. Empty parking lots are not,” Wren said. Due to the “limited real estate” in the city, Wren said firefighters are running into challenges in finding places to stage firefighting equipment and other resources.
