Grace Kelly to entertain at Plymouth winery

News release

Enjoy the unequivocal musical prodigy that is Grace Kelly at the beautiful tasting room and event center at CG Di Arie Winery in Plymouth Saturday, Aug. 28.

Nestled in the Sierra foothills, Di Arie Winery is a picturesque destination with seating in an open-air, magical setting set amid a flowering hillside of trellised vineyards all shaded by majestic oak trees. At this concert guest will enjoy Di Arie’s award-winning wines and, to make this a truly amazing experience, you can opt to purchase a ticket that includes a delicious threecourse dinner provided by Taste Restaurant.

Kelly has rocked the jazz world with sold-out concerts, 13 acclaimed albums and a résumé that includes performing at the Hollywood Bowl and as part of the house band for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” — all before reaching her mid-20s. Kelly’s early career featured performances at Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration at the age of 16 and at 14 as a soloist with the Boston Pops playing an original composition arranged for the legendary orchestra; she has since played more than 900 shows as a bandleader in 35 countries at venues like the Kennedy Center and Moscow Symphony Hall and for the Montreal, Newport and Montreux International Jazz festivals.

Touted for her scorching saxophone stylings and purring vocals, Kelly has performed and recorded with renowned artists, including Lin Manuel-Miranda, Dave Brubeck, Phil Woods, Huey Lewis, Harry Connick Jr., Gloria Estefan, Questlove and Wynton Marsalis.

CG Di Arie Winery is located at 19919 Shenandoah School Road in Plymouth, For tickets and more information visit cgdiarie.com.

CRC hosts online music show

News release

The Cosumnes River College Music Department continues its unique series of online performances as a way to serve students “outside the classroom.” While some classes are now in person, the college remains in a mostly online teaching environment and the music program is responding with creative ways of reaching its students and community.

The music department created CRC Music: In the Studio a year ago as a weekly series featuring innovative artists who pushed the boundaries in their fields. The series also highlighted student voices through a series of open mics and student ensemble performances.

The series was so successful, the music department decided to continue the program, which begins this Friday, Aug. 27, at noon with CRC President Edward Bush’s Presidential Playlist.

“This series is a tremendous opportunity for our students to interact weekly with world class artists from across North America, including some right here in our own backyard,” said CRC Music Professor Kurt Erickson.

Erickson added that the CRC music department is taking the lead by providing innovative programming one would expect to find at worldrenowned, four-year universities, not at the community college level.

The innovation of putting something like The CRC Music: In the Studio together is what is putting this department at the forefront of creative programming in the community.

The In the Studio events take place at noon each Friday and feature a rotation of special guests, student performances and workshops with live Q&A.

Sacramento area newspaper legend’s collection on display

News release

The Sacramento History Museum presents the exhibit California in Print: Highlights from the Eleanor McClatchy Collection.

Early California immigrants brought the latest printing technology with them to record and communicate their ideas. The printed media introduced California to the world during a time when this distant land was still a captivating mystery.

The new exhibit is installed in the newly christened R. Burnett Miller Gallery on the museum’s third floor. Reflecting the ways Californians chose to document their lives through printed media. This collection recounts stories of adventure, hardship, discovery and triumph and highlights how perceptions of this new paradise evolved over time.

The colorful exhibit showcases rare items and collectibles from the Eleanor McClatchy Collection that were donated to the city of Sacramento and the Center of Sacramento History.

Eleanor McClatchy (1895-1980) was the granddaughter of James McClatchy, who became editor of The Sacramento Bee in 1857, its founding year. Eleanor went on to preside over the newspaper, 19361978. In addition to helping run the family newspaper business, she was an avid collector of California history. While only a small percentage of her impressive collection is on display, the exhibit highlights priceless items such as original Gold Rush era maps showing where gold could be found, first-edition rare books printed in California, letter sheets from 1850s miners, a page from the Gutenberg Bible, dime novels from the 1870s and 1880s and more.

The Sacramento History Museum is located at 101 I St. in Old Sacramento. For more information call (916) 808-7059.
