Thomas Frey Staff writer A 57-year-old man went missing last week following the evacuation of Grizzly Flat. El Dorado County sheriff ’s detectives continue to search for Marvin Hardy Creel, who they say was ordered to evacuate but hasn’t been heard from since Aug. 18. Family members reported they last received a call from Creel — a 5-foot, 6-inch, 200-pound white male with blond hair, blue eyes and possibly wearing eyeglasses — Wednesday, Aug. 18, around 11:30 a.m. The family member was not able to speak to Creel due to poor reception. Family and friends tried calling Marvin back repeatedly but those calls have not been answered. Authorities say Creel’s white Dodge pick up was later found abandoned in the Grizzly Flat area. Grizzly Flat was evacuated overnight Aug. 16 as the Caldor Fire made its way through town, taking down entire neighborhoods, an elementary school, church and post office. Between Aug. 16 and Aug. 18 the blaze ripped through more than 60,000 acres, including the Grizzly Flat area and north and east of there, the most activity seen so far on the Caldor Fire. Anyone with any information that could help authorities locate Creel is asked to call the Sheriff ’s Office at (530) 642-4714 or email Sargentj@ edso.org.

Fire and drought worry EID customers Michael Raffety Mountain Democrat correspondent So far none of EID’s wooden flumes have been affected by the Caldor Fire. On Aug. 17 EID General Manager Jim Abercrombie declared an emergency for the Caldor Fire and Monday, Aug. 23, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to approve that resolution. Director Pat Dwyer was absent for the meeting. Director of Operations Dan Corcoran and others have been meeting three times a day with the fire operations managers at Incident Command at the El Dorado

County Fairgrounds, providing them GIS information about the district’s flumes. EID has 34 flume structures, of which 17 are wood. Corcoran said they had expected to lose some district assets but have not. Director George Osborne, a retired Cal Fire chief, talked to the current Cal Fire chief at the fairgrounds. “They have committed to protecting our resources,” Osborne said. Osborne also complimented the Jenkinson Lake Sly Park staff for safely evacuating campers. “It was a massive operation,” Osborne said.

Abercrombie also said he reached out to the manager of the Grizzly Flat Community Services District for mutual aid, but the reservoir, pump station and distribution lines there are all in good shape. Sly Park, Weber Reservoir, Camp 5 and Flume 46 were all largely fire proofed by cutting down dead trees and masticating brush and undergrowth and thinning out forests. The hydro crews headquartered at Camp 5 have been evacuated as a safety measure. To help protect some additional facilities at the same meeting the board voted 4-0
