El Dorado County was abuzz Tuesday night as the community connected. From Pollock Pines to Rescue and nearly everywhere in between, neighbors and businesses fired up their grills and organized parties as part of the annual National Night Out. In Placerville, police officers, City Council members, city staff and fire safe council members rallied at the police department before splitting up and heading out to eight street parties planned throughout town for National Night Out. The National Association of Town Watch established National Night Out in 1984 as a “take back the streets” crime prevention program. That year 2.5 million people from 400 communities spanning 23 states participated. Fast forward 38 years and 38 million individuals from 16,000 communities in every state in the nation roll out the block party carpet on the first Tuesday in August to come together with public service professionals to build safer neighborhoods and stronger bonds. Placerville has participated each year and boasts recognition for its efforts. “We are very proud of our efforts in National Night Out,” said Police Chief Joseph Wren. n
