B4 THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE
A Heart Growing Colder Dear Annie: My husband and I got married right before the pandemic. Before the marriage, we lived in different states, 3,000 miles apart. After we got married, the pandemic split us apart again geographically for eight months. We finally got back together, and I was glad to get the opportunity to work from home with him in his city. We mostly stay at home, working from home and watching movies together. We were in a car
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2021 accident a few days after we were reunited, and my leg was hurt, and I am not able to run or walk for long periods of time. He was not hurt in the accident. It’s been six months since the accident, and my husband has not shown any physical interest in me all this time. I occasionally hug him and hold him while watching movies, but he does not initiate any similar physical affection. We must have kissed four or five times since the accident, always at my request.

I keep telling him that I love him, and he acknowledges that, but when I ask him why he has lost interest in affection of any kind, he says he just has. Upon prodding further, he once said that it was because of the arguments we had when we were dating. Another time he said that after my leg is healed and we are able to go out more, we’ll both feel better. Other than the affection issue, everything else is good. I know I have extra belly fat that is difficult to get rid of, but I had the fat while dating, too. I have gone on a few hikes and walks with him, but with a walking stick, and sometimes I need help. I think he wants me to be completely self-reliant. The arguments while dating were just about our past relationships that I left behind, but I don’t think he is the kind of person who likes to forget the past. While we were separated during the pandemic, I was glad that we had stopped fighting about the past and assumed we had moved on, but now I think there is something stuck in his head that he refuses to let go of. I am guessing he would want to blame me for it, but the problem is that he does not tell me what is really going on in his head, and we don’t even argue anymore. Other than this issue, he has always been a great guy, helpful to family members and me. I assure you he is not having an affair; we spend all our time together. I can continue living with him and working from home, but I think going back to my city and state and stopping day-to-day communication with him might get him to open up and resolve the issue. My concern is that, considering the little amount of time we have spent since we met, we should be like newly married couples, making out all the time. Instead, we don’t even hold hands like we did when we were dating. Before the pandemic split us apart, he used to express his love for me, and we would cook, clean and make out like normal couples. I am not planning to give up on us. What should I do? — Feeling Lost Dear Feeling Lost: It sounds like absence made your husband’s heart grow colder, rather than fonder. Shutting you out emotionally and physically is not the solution for a happy marriage. You are right to be upset, and you deserve all the love and tenderness that a marriage can offer, but moving back to another state will not help. Suggest marriage counseling to him. In the meantime, try and let up on your expectations of what the honeymoon phase should look like. A lot of couples have a very difficult first year of marriage as they iron out this new
way of living with someone. Be patient with your relationship and try not to have such an idealized notion of what it should look like. With the help of a good therapist, you can iron out together what your individual needs are. Always remember to listen to his, and always voice what you need.
Missed the Mark Dear Readers: A great many of you wrote to say that I suggested that yoga and diet can cure depression. In no way, shape or form do I believe that. Depression is a disease like any other and requires medical attention, love and support. I suggested medical counseling in a previous column, but I wish I had been clearer in stating my belief that seeing a doctor for depression is absolutely essential. Here is a sampling of the feedback: Dear Annie: I am writing to comment on the letter from “Blessed and Happy Woman,” who lectured us all in an extremely superior manner about how she overcame depression with yoga and dietary changes and some other claptrap. Sounds to me like she was less depressed and more sad. She needs to understand that chemical depression is a very real and harmful thing that cannot be overcome by eating broccoli and doing your platitudes about how amazing you are in the mirror every morning. In fact, treatment for actual major depressive disorder has about a 65% effective rate, and the remaining 35% just suffer through life until their depression kills them by suicide or disease brought on by the stress and anxiety of depression. Please inform your readers that to implement the “cures” that Blessed and Happy Woman suggested for people actually suffering from depression will end in misery and disaster. I suggest Blessed and Happy Woman study depression and its effects on individuals and families, and perhaps turn her smug condescension into learning how to shut up and listen and understand the perspectives of other people. It’s not all about her. — Educated and Fuming Dear Annie: “Blessed and Happy Woman” was a bit off. Prayer and diet cannot “cure depression.” You did mention the counsel of a doctor, but I want to stress that a doctor is absolutely necessary when dealing with mental health issues. People still have such a fear of mental illness, but it is no different than a physical illness like diabetes or asthma. People have no fear disclosing that they have asthma and need medication for it. It’s so sad that people still live in fear of disclosing their mental illness. I’m afraid that you had an awe-
some opportunity to speak about the power of seeking professional help when there is an issue with mental health. You responded meekly, not with the response I expected — that she should get her butt into counseling and anyone in the same position should as well. You dropped the ball, unfortunately. Otherwise, I do enjoy your column. — Correcting an Annie Dear Annie: As one who has suffered from clinical depression my whole life, I feel your response was lacking. What “Blessed” is describing is not much different from the advice of some wellintentioned but mistaken folks that all depressed ones can pull themselves up by their bootstraps. There are different kinds of depression and depressive episodes. Blessed seems to have entered into her depressed state after her divorce. I applaud her for doing everything she could to help her own mental state. However, for the clinically depressed and those with mood disorders, their depression was not caused by a life event. This depression is not one that goes away with a simple improvement in personal habits. The necessary treatment for one suffering from clinical depression is many times psychological counseling along with antidepressant medications, along with many of the “tips” those trying to be helpful offer. Even with all this, it is still a struggle. I am sad that your response missed the chance to clear this up for those with the mindset of “Blessed.” The clinically depressed deserve the dignity of understanding. — Misunderstood by Many Dear Misunderstood: Thank you for your honest and kind email. I hope it helps others who are suffering. ——— Dear Annie: I am a woman in my 50s who always thought I had good manners. Recently, I have had several appointments with a new physician, who is in her 30s. She knew she had been recommended by my friend and next-door neighbor, who is a physician of the same specialty but does not see private patients. She immediately addressed me by my first name, which I thought was friendly and lovely. When I reciprocated and called her by her first name, she informed me that it was not appropriate for a patient to call a doctor by her first name. Did I miss something in my junior high etiquette classes, or did she? Is there a rule about how people in a professional relationship should address each other? — Just Wondering Dear Wondering: Since she was referred to you by your neighbor, who is a doctor and who, I assume, you call by her first name, it is understandable that you addressed this young physician by her first name. However, as a general rule, it is better to err on the side of caution and address doctors as “Dr.” until they tell you otherwise.
