t the home of Oak Ridge defensive coordinator Darren Jonutz and his wife Kim, there is a fine line between having fun and working diligently. That line is the door in the middle of his four-car garage. On one side of the door are more than 20 classic arcade games like Need for Speed, Deadpool and NFL Blitz. But once you go through the door to the other half of the garage, the fun and games are over and it is time to work. Every Tuesday night during the past 11 football seasons, the Trojans’ defense has met at the Jonutz home following practice, where the couple supplies players with pizza, and Kim, a former Mrs. Fields employee, bakes an assortment of cookies. “I can’t even explain to you how good the cookies are,” said Avant Jacobs, who had five interceptions in 2019. “Mrs. Jonutz cooks the best cookies in the area hands down.” When the Jonutz family moved into the home, n

After a two-hour meeting held via Google Meet, parents learned the possible fate of their children’s education with a confirmation sent out the following day. On July 21 El Dorado Union High School District officials proposed that the fall session should begin with distance learning, citing limited resources available to hold in-person classes in a safe manner. The proposal went to the EDUHSD Board of Trustees and was relayed to parents via email July 22. “... our recommendation to the board is to focus our energy on distance learning to start the school year and pivot to in-person learning as soon as it is safe and we are cleared by Public Health,” states the letter signed by EDHUSD Superintendent Ron Carruth. “This is either a relief or bitterly disappointing news to all of us,” he continued. “We absolutely realize our students need to return to school. We also recognize that Public Health has not been allocated the resources needed from the state and are not able to meet the basic needs of testing for students and staff at this time. Thus, it is clearly unsafe to bring everyone back starting on Monday, Aug. 10.” Students who spent nearly three months at home during last school year shared their frustrations. “I am happy it is keeping everyone safe, but it is definitely harder with communication with my teachers and I would much rather be at school,” incoming Oak Ridge High School junior Madi Moore told Village Life. “I was looking forward to going back to school to see my friends and with online school it takes away

Firefighters’ training day turns into real-life rescue Noel Stack Editor Everyone just wanted to go home — fate had another plan. After days of training on the American River at the confluence in the Auburn area, El Dorado Hills firefighters were tired. They talked of skipping lunch on that last day in late June but Sierra Rescue International instructor Tim Warren insisted they take a break before the final lesson. The scenario: A swimmer stuck on the rocks amidst the roaring rapids and swift water. The reality: While getting geared up the firefighters saw Warren rush past them. They looked down toward the water and then heard someone scream. A 3-year-old boy was under the water and his father was struggling to reach him. “The boy’s eyes were wide,” recalled El Dorado Hills Fire Capt. Brian Wilkey. “You could tell he was drowning.” Instinct and all the lessons the team had learned in the previous days kicked in. Firefighters positioned themselves upstream and downstream, Wilkey said. A rope was tossed to the desperate father and with the help of a couple rescuers the two victims were pulled to safety. “The little boy took on a little water but he was fine,” Wilkey said, adding that the family Rottweiler also jumped in the water but he safely got out with minimal help. Tragedy averted ... but then, just upstream, a woman fell into the river and was headed to the same treacherous section. Despite firefighters’ pleas, Wilkey said, the woman’s boyfriend jumped in as well. Both had to be rescued. n
