An El Dorado Hills woman has been arrested in connection with a local animal cruelty case. About one month ago El Dorado County Animal Services staff was made aware of possible animal abuse at a residence on Tea Rose Drive in the Bass Lake area of El Dorado Hills. Arrested on felony animal cruelty charges and taken into custody without incident on July 19 was Sandra Sharlene Tidwell, 49. The woman was connected with the Sierra Nevada German Shepherd Rescue group, according to authorities. “There were multiple complaints regarding a stench of feces from the residence,” states Chief of Animal Services Henry Brzezinski in a news release. “The investigation continued and a search warrant was ultimately authored.” On July 19 El Dorado County Animal Services personnel, in cooperation with El Dorado County Sheriff ’s Office detectives, served that search warrant. Animal Services officials say approximately 25 dogs, including puppies, both living and deceased, were removed from the residence during the search warrant. The living canines were transported to the county animal shelter, where they are currently undergoing care and rehabilitation. “Because this is an active investigation, no further information regarding this case is available at this time,” noted Brzezinski. Tidwell was released on $10,000 bail, according to EDSO inmate records. Dogs seized were transported to the El Dorado County animal shelter, where they are currently undergoing care and rehabilitation.

Brothers Chase and Cody Bomar were each found guilty of seconddegree murder with special allegations of using a deadly and dangerous weapon in the 2018 killing of their former roommate Jeremy Fortuin on Pony Express Trail in Cedar Grove. Cody and Chase — who were 21 and 19 years old, respectively, at the time of Fortuin’s death — sat quietly while they awaited the jury’s verdict to be read Tuesday, July 19, in El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Vicki Ashworth’s courtroom. Barbara Jean Smiley Aug. 2, 1948 – June 22, 2022

Barbara passed peacefully in her sleep around 3 a.m. June 22 in Shingle Springs, Calif. Born in San Francisco in 1948, she is survived by partner Charlie Whitten, friend Pam Gardner and family Bill Burns, Bonnie Stevens and Leila Spencer. A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, Barbara was a positive, outgoing person and involved in a couple of groups supporting and advocating for women, Soroptomist and AAUW. She was honored with the El Dorado County Democratic Community Steward award. She was a caring, supportive partner, good friend and sister. She will be missed by many. Marilee M. (Lyons) Nichols Apr. 11, 1934 – Feb. 5, 2022

Marilee Nichols, a third generation El Dorado County native daughter and longtime Placerville resident, passed away after a prolonged illness Feb. 5. She was 87. Marilee was born at the home of her parents, Harvey and Mary Lyons, on the corner of Bedford Avenue and Pleasant Street in Placerville. Her grandparents Jules and Josephine Besse, lived next door. She attended Placerville Grammar School and collected dolls which became a lifelong passion. In high school, she was an active member of the International Order of the Rainbow Girls. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 1952. Following graduation, Marilee moved to Sacramento where she worked for the state of California. In June 1956, she married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Nichols, also an El Dorado County native, in Reno, Nev. The couple were married for 59 years until Bob’s passing in 2015. After their first daughter, Leann, was born in 1957, Marilee and Bob returned home to Placerville to be closer to family. Their second daughter, Julie, was born in 1959. Marilee successfully balanced work and family life. A bookkeeper, she held positions at the Placerville Montgomery Ward catalog store and Mother Lode Bank before joining the staff of El Dorado Irrigation District. She worked at EID for 12 years, retiring in 1977. A proud member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for many years, Marilee appreciated the lifelong friendship of her sorority sisters. She and Bob loved to travel, enjoying trips to Mexico, Hawaii, North and South Carolina, and Washington State among other locations. They were especially fond of their frequent trips to Bodega Bay and Minden, Nev. Marilee was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert; parents Harvey and Mary (Besse) Lyons and her sister, Julaine “Peachy” Lyons. She is survived by her daughters Leann (Nichols) Traver (David) and Julie Nichols (Terry Smith); grandsons D.J. Traver and Duncan Smith and great-grandsons Forrest Traver and Chase Traver. A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Sunday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at Sierra Vista Vineyards and Winery in Placerville.

Robert Gary Strand March 7, 1937 – July 3, 2022

Bob was born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1937 and departed this world on Independence Day weekend at The Pines in Placerville. He grew up in the mill town of Pino Grande, where his father worked for the Michigan-Californi Lumber Company. He enjoyed a wonderful carefree childhood with his sisters Roberta and Rosamond and parents Margaret and Omer Strand. He was one of the lucky kids to ride the famous cable that carried lumber across the canyon to Camino. He received his early education in a one-room schoolhouse with 13 other students. After the mill was closed in Pino Grande, the family moved to 5-Mile Terrace and Bob graduated from eighth grade at Blair’s one-room schoolhouse in Camino. He graduated from El Dorado Union High School in 1955, where he excelled in sports and was the features editor of the school paper. He attended Sierra College and worked for the Pacific Bell Telephone Company before enlisting in the Army in 1958. He married in 1963 and had two sons, Robbie and Kary, with wife Diane. Bob had many professions and interests. He worked at Aerojet and Sharpe Army Depot in Lodi, surveyed for Butler & Sanders in Placerville, attended a jewelers school in Oregon, worked as a Realtor in Citrus Heights and took a job with the U.S. Postal Service. He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Omer Strand and sister Roberta Miller. He is survived by sons Rob and Kary Steele of Lodi and sister Rosie Gier (Bob) of Placerville as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his quick wit, great sense of humor and amazing memory of dates and events. Remembrances may be sent to Snowline Hospice.

Steven Warren Foster May 3, 1955 – July 3, 2022

Nov. 3, 1949 – May 29, 2022

Richard passed away suddenly at his home near El Dorado May 29 at the age of 72. He was born in Placerville, Calif., to Leo and Corrine (Dixie) Springer of Pleasant Valley. He was a graduate of El Dorado High School. A Vietnam War combat veteran, he joined the 1st Battalion, 327 Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) of the U.S. Army in 1970 and spent much of his tour at FSB Bastogne. Following his initial service with the Army, he became a wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service in the Eldorado National Forest, and later the California Department of Forestry at various stations including Mt. Danaher. At the same time, he served with the California Army National Guard in the 270th Military Police Company. In the 1990s, he went back to active duty in the Army and was stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco in the Judge Advocate General’s office. After retirement from the Army, he went to work for the Veterans of Foreign Wars as an assistant service officer to the Veterans Administration, where he dedicated his career to helping numerous veterans achieve the benefits owed to them by their country. As a member of one of the pioneer families of El Dorado County, Richard was passionate about local history. He would spend hours recounting stories that had been passed along about Pleasant Valley, his own upbringing in the area and especially of his days in Vietnam and firefighting. Richard is survived by his two sons, Ian Springer of Colfax and Eric Springer of Truckee as well as his siblings Leo (Butch) Springer of Diamond Springs, Ellen Maxey of El Dorado, Jeanette Luna of Redding and Brian Springer of Placerville. Memorial and funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Edward Rogers

May 14, 1942 – July 10, 2022

Edward John Rogers, 80, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 10, at his home in Grass Valley with his loving wife Nancy of 46 years at his side. Ed was born in Chicago, Ill., May 14, 1942, to Lester and Marie Rogers. Upon graduating from Proviso East High School in 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served a four-year tour of duty. He traveled the world, spending time in Vietnam piloting a boat taking troops into battle and deceased troops out. On June 18 of 1981 he married Nancy Leatherby Siegrist and after months of traveling they decided to settle in Northern California to build their life together. Ed operated a Chevron service station in Placerville, where he took many young men under his wing and worked with them to learn the service station business. In 1990, he successfully established his own business, Northern Sierra Propane, currently operating in his hometown of Grass Valley. Ed was a humorous, full of life and loving guy. He thought of his employees as family and tried to keep a nurturing atmosphere in his business. In his spare time Ed enjoyed fishing, riding his quad, creating photography and traveling all around the United States, Canada, Mexico and Alaska with Nancy, his lifelong partner and best friend by his side. Ed obtained a student pilot license and received his captain’s license in Vancouver, B.C. He loved to spend time on vacations with Nancy on ocean yacht adventures, road trips in their RV or other interesting destinations together. He deeply loved his wife, his family and his dog Cody. He was loved by all; a cherished member of the family and a pillar of strength. Ed is survived by his wife Nancy Rogers, daughter Kelly Hafertepe (Mike) of Pennsylvania, his stepson Bill Siegrist (Monica) of Illinois, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisterin-law Judy Lowe, brother-in-law Rich Leatherby (Angie), niece Cheryl Floresguerra (Robert), nephew Jeff Britton, great-nieces Marina and Meadow Floresguerra and great-nephew Jordan Britton. He was preceded in death by his parents Marie and Lester Roger and his sister Carole Rogers. Arrangements are under the care of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary, 459 Hollow Way, Nevada City. Visitation was held Wednesday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to noon. Funeral and memorial services followed at 1 p.m. in the chapel.

Steven died unexpectedly at home on July 3. Steve was the nicest guy you could know. He always made you smile. Steve was born in Placerville and spent most of his life in Diamond Springs. Steve went to Herbert Green Grammer school, which was named after his grandfather Herbert Green, then he went to Ponderosa High School. Steve met Susan and fell in love. They got married and had three children named Katie Foster, Kerrie Foster and Micheal Foster. Steve was preceded in death by Susan Foster, his father, grandparents and many aunts, uncles and friends. He is survived by his children Katie Foster, Kerrie Foster and Micheal Foster; his mother Charlene Foster; his sisters Cindy Weldy and Tammie Anderson (Gordon) and his brother Brian Foster (Erika) and a lot more grandkids, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and tons of friends. Steve will be missed by many.

Vernice Windsor

Oct. 19, 1930 – July 8, 2022

Vernice Windsor passed away July 8 after a brief illness at the age of 91. Born Vernice Mabel Linebarger from Batesville, Ark., on Oct. 19, 1930. From the time she was a child, she had always dreamed of travel. She loved hiking and had an insatiable curiosity to visit other lands and know the history of other cultures. Her many travels took her to the countries that she dreamed of seeing as a child. In her later years she was blessed to be surrounded by family who enjoyed her wisdom and stories of times past. She loved to play pinochle at the senior center and dominoes with her family. Lake Tahoe and Hawaii were her favorite places to visit. Vernice was preceded in death by her husband Sam Stigall Jr., and later by Harold Windsor. She is survived by her sons Sam Stigall III and wife Louise, Terry Stigall and wife Ellen; her grandchildren: Christine Stigall, Jennifer Bloxsom and Kevin Stigall and her great-grandchildren Kayla Bloxsom, Elizabeth Bloxsom, Bryan Bloxsom, Kylee Stigall, Walker Stigall, Clayton Stigall and Luke Stigall. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Biden-Harris administration announced that the Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded $3.4 million in funding from President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for cooperative agreements with the Washoe Tribe of California and Nevada and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to combat the spread of aquatic invasive species in Lake Tahoe. The funding represents a historic effort dedicated to restoring the Lake Tahoe Basin ecosystem. “Along with continued boater education, adding permanent watercraft inspection stations will strengthen protection of Lake Tahoe from further introductions of aquatic invasive species, which could severely harm the region’s delicate ecosystem and cost millions to control,” said Kimberly Chevallier, environmental improvement program manager for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. “We thank Tahoe’s congressional representatives for this generous support.” The agreements will support efforts to remove the Eurasian watermilfoil — a pernicious aquatic invasive plant — as well as provide funding for public outreach and education about aquatic invasive species and invest in permanent inspection stations. A total of $17 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds will be available for such work over the next five years. “Our ongoing collaboration with tribal leaders and local partners is crucial to successful implementation of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said Service Director Martha Williams. “As stewards of public lands, we’re grateful for ongoing commitments to invest in communities like Lake Tahoe. Today’s investment will further safeguard a region that holds deep cultural and ecological significance.” The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law makes a $1.4 billion investment in ecosystem restoration and resilience across the country, supporting

collaboration with states, tribes and local communities to restore habitat connectivity for aquatic species, advance habitat restoration and invasive species control and conserve at-risk and listed species. Located on Washoe ancestral lands, Lake Tahoe holds significant cultural importance for the Washoe Tribe and is part of the historic range of Lahontan cutthroat trout. To oversee restoration efforts in the Lake Tahoe watershed, the Washoe Environmental Protection Department was established in 1998 and has been a key partner in ongoing restoration work. A popular area for recreation, the Lake Tahoe Basin faces ongoing threats from the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species. Common invasive weeds, like the Eurasian watermilfoil, can significantly disrupt aquatic ecosystems and crowd 275119 out native species. Aquatic invasive species management is a top priority of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program, one of the most comprehensive restoration programs in the nation. For the past 15 years, Environmental Improvement Program partners have worked together to stop the spread of invasive species and prevent new aquatic invasive species from entering Lake Tahoe. The service worked closely with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the multi-partner Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinating Committee to identify priority areas for funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including permanent watercraft inspection stations to aid in prevention. Under the Environmental Improvement Program, Lake Tahoe watercraft inspectors have inspected more than 100,000 boats since 2008. In that time, no new invasive species have been detected in the Tahoe region. To strengthen collaboration with the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, the project team also identified several projects that will increase Tribal engagement and participation in ecosystem restoration efforts and inform future program priorities with traditional perspective and methods. The Georgetown Divide Public Utility District Board of Directors is launching a public information campaign to inform customers about the state-mandated water conservation measures that were implemented in the district beginning June 16. These water conservation measures target up to a 20% reduction in overall water use to comply with the emergency water conservation regulation adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board May 24. The district could be fined by the state for non-compliance. Additionally, more restrictive measures could be put in place such as emergency drought tier rates if the district’s water saving requirements are not met. The required conservation measures to achieve the 20% reduction in water usage are: • Customers with property addresses ending in an odd-number are limited to landscape irrigation on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. • Customers with property addresses ending in an even-number are limited to landscape irrigation on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. • Prohibits landscape irrigation on Mondays. • Prohibits wasteful practices such as water running off properties onto sidewalks or gutters. • Requires automatic hose shutoffs. • Requires swimming pools and spas to be covered. • Prohibits decorative water features. • Restaurants may only serve water upon request. • Requires customers to repair leaks, breaks and malfunctions in a timely fashion. • Shortens the irrigation season. To evaluate conservation efforts, the residential gallons per capital per day usage calculated in 2022 is

compared to 2021. For the months of May/June in 2021 the treated water demand decreased by 28% and by 16% for May/June 2022. District staff will monitor usage to ensure the 20% demand reduction is being met. To achieve the 20% demand reduction for irrigation water, the irrigation season is scheduled to end Sept. 1. The board directed staff to alert customers to the conservation requirements through a variety of channels, including bill inserts, press releases, widely distributed flyers, banners/signage placed at strategic locations throughout the district, as well as the GDPUD website and Facebook. Directors took other actions during their regular meeting of July 12, including: Introduced the first reading of Ordinance 2022-01 allowing the district to place a lien on property of customers with delinquent balances as of June 30. The adoption of the ordinance was held at the board’s July 12 meeting. There are currently 298 delinquent accounts with a total outstanding balance of $83,811.58. Staff will continue to reach out to customers with delinquent accounts to resolve payment issues before the final list allowing a lien is compiled and included with the adopted ordinance. Is Gov. Gavin Newsom eyeing the White House?

resident Gavin Newsom? California’s governor repeatedly insists that he’s not interested. “I don’t know how many times you can say no in ways that others don’t say no,” he told one journalist who asked the question recently. Dan Walters “Yeah, I mean, I have sub-zero interest,” Newsom told another. “It’s not even on my radar.” That’s what he would say if he is truly not interested in mounting a run for the White House. But at this stage, it’s also what he would say were he interested, so the denials lack face value. Newsom has patiently climbed the political ladder one rung at a time, beginning with appointments by Willie Brown, then mayor of San Francisco, to the city parking commission and later to the city’s board of supervisors (city council). Newsom succeeded Brown as mayor, achieved notoriety for defying state law to sanction same-sex marriages, was elected as lieutenant governor and then as governor in 2018. He handily survived a recall election and is certain California Gov. to win a second term as Gavin Newsom’s governor this year. Having devoted nearly recent words half his 54 years to that and actions climb and having portrayed are fueling himself as a political innovator, why wouldn’t he national media look in his shaving mirror speculation and see a president staring about his back? The recent flare of becoming a national media speculation presidential was ignited by Newsom candidate. himself as he criticized his own party’s passivity to the surge of conservative — and mostly Republican — victories in political and judicial arenas and fired rhetorical broadsides at prominent GOP figures and red states. “Where the hell is my party? Where’s the Democratic Party? You guys paying attention to what’s going on?” Newsom asked abortion rights activists after a Supreme Court decision repealing the Roe v. Wade ruling was leaked. “Why aren’t we standing up more firmly, more resolutely? Why aren’t we calling this out? This is a concerted, coordinated effort. And, yes, they’re winning. They are. They have been. Let’s acknowledge that. We need to stand up. Where’s the counteroffensive?” Earlier this month Newsom spent a few dollars on a Fox News TV spot in Florida, sniping at the state’s policies and its Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, who’s making presidential noises himself. “Freedom is under attack in your state,” Newsom told Floridians. “I urge all of you living in Florida to join us in the fight or join us in California.” The ad probably had zero impact in Florida, but once again fueled speculation about Newsom’s true motives. In a mid-June Atlantic magazine article, veteran political journalist Ronald Brownstein anointed Newsom as the man on a white horse galloping to

Kevin Kiley never saw a weapons system he did not like EDITOR: he GOP defeated the Build Back Better Act because it would cost $3.5 trillion and would “bankrupt America overnight.” The truth: the $3.5 trillion would be spread over 10 years. In 2003 VP Dick Cheney urged GOP legislators to approve a $6.2 trillion tax cut, reminding them: “Reaganomics proved that deficits don’t matter.” Trump seized on this trope to pass a $4.5 trillion tax cut aimed at corporations and the super rich. (My wife and I are on fixed incomes, yet Trump’s tax cut increased our taxes). Reagan raised the national debt 186%, Dubya 101% and Obama 74%. Reagan flipped us from a creditor nation to a debtor one. Contrary to GOP mantra, the largest contributor to deficit spending is not welfare, nor Social Security/Medicare, but the military. DoD’s 2022

official budget is $772 billion. Factoring modest yearly 5% increases, in 2032 DoD will spend $11,536,000,000,000.00 (versus the proposed BBB spending of $3.5 trillion). While the BBB Act would benefit society at large, Pentagon budgets benefit exclusively the military/industrial complex. This corporate welfare generates immense campaign contributions to the corrupt organization we call “Congress.” We’ll never put our fiscal house in order until the military/ intelligence budget is brought under control. Kevin Kiley is endorsed by Trump and running for McClintock’s seat. Kiley wants to balance the budget by cutting, or abolishing, Social Security, Medicare, Obamacare, the Post Office, the Education Dept. Under Kiley’s playbook, those “savings” would go to the Pentagon and tax cuts for billionaires. r. Chapman’s predictable letter blaming the horrific events in Texas on the gun and those who support the second amendment is to be expected. Let’s examine it. He basically attacks on two fronts so let’s take the blame first. If Ted Cruz and those who support the Second Amendment are to blame, then so are you on the left who, in this state alone, are responsible for the release of thousand of violent felons and armed parolees to prey on the public. You can wear that mantle. Now to the guns. You’re lucky this wacko didn’t follow the lead of the worst school disaster, which was in 1927 when 45 were killed in a school using dynamite. You focus on this incorrectly categorized “assault weapon” while not realizing that a handgun with multiple magazines could have done the same thing in the same amount of time. Another thing to think about when you want to crack down on guns while promoting increased crime is the gangs. You see, gangs are not into drugs. Not even into human trafficking. What they are into is money and anything that provides it. Right now that is drugs and human trafficking but if you create a market it can just as easily be guns. And the ones they bring across the border won’t be so-called assault rifles, they will be the real things. How you on the left can myopically focus on guns while promoting the release of violent armed felons and lessening penalties for crime is beyond me, but it certainly explains or dismal situation. onsidering recent history, it’s kind of hard to reconcile the fact that hundreds of thousands of people are in prisons and jails around the country. They didn’t thumb their noses at the system at every turn. They didn’t have Chris millions to spend on white collar legal geniuses to keep them breathing free until the next midterm election. They don’t have elected officials claiming they got a bad rap or that they didn’t know stealing hubcaps or swiping laundry off a clothesline was against the law. They don’t have friends in high places who can front

them the millions it takes to “beat” the local, state or federal judicial entities. They aren’t special. But, let’s suppose for a minute that they believe they are special. Here’s a response to the district Attorney from a guy suspected of armed robbery: Daley Suspect: “Geez, Mr. DA, did you forget that my boss ordered me to jack that turban dude that runs the 7-11? Anyhow, I can’t possibly do court for at least six months. I’ve got a Proud Fellas rally and an Oath Wits march, my high school reunion and the Bowling for Bazookas tournament. So, talk to my lawyer and have a nice day.”

And don’t get me started on those people who consistently flaunt their self-importance and refuse to comply with a federal subpoena. That seems about as serious as a heart attack, about which I also have some hardknocks experience. Are his actions merely aimed at goading his party into being more aggressive on such issues as abortion rights and gun control, as he insists, or is he also laying the foundation for a presidential campaign, either in 2024 or 2028? A 2024 bid would hinge on President Joe Biden’s opting out of re-election and Vice President Kamala Harris — another Willie Brown protégé — once again stumbling while seeking the presidency. To play a longer game, Newsom would need a position beyond ex-governor, such as the Senate seat Dianne Feinstein is likely to vacate two years hence. Or maybe he’ll just go back to peddling wine. The annual Mark Forni Classic is routinely the biggest night of the championship season and this Saturday Placerville Speedway will host the 17th edition of the longstanding show. A stacked fourdivision program will be offered to race fans featuring the winged sprint cars, limited late models, pure stocks and dwarf cars. The winged 360 sprint car portion will dish out $5,000 to the winner, $2,000 for second and $1,200 for third. The limited late models will be vying for $800 to win their feature, while the pure stocks main event offers $500 to win. The Forni family has had a great history in El Dorado County, with deep ties to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds and much of the land on which it sits. Much like his forefathers, Mark Forni had a great passion for the county fair and its attributes, especially the racetrack. From the time he was a young child and the days when Placerville Speedway was known as “Hangtown Speedway,” Forni was actively involved with the weekly auto races, always willing to lend a helping

hand to anyone in need involved with the sport he loved. Later in life, Forni continued his contributions to local auto racing, sponsoring many race teams with his business Forni’s Trucking. He later became a member of the El Dorado County Fair Board and focused on the issues regarding the future of the fair and the speedway. Forni believed in working relationships. He understood the importance of race promoters, sponsorships and the one key element for every event to be successful — the spectator. In November 2004 Forni was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. During his final months Forni had the opportunity to say goodbye to friends and family and spend some special moments with his wife and children, a bittersweet time for those who knew and loved him so much. In the summer of 2005 Forni passed away at the early age of 45. “Mark was the guy who got it done no matter what,” said former Placerville Speedway promoter Alan Padjen. “It didn’t matter how big of a problem we may have had. He would call me up and see what it would take to fix it. He didn’t just n

The board adopted a resolution to establish the appropriations limit for 2022-23 at $3,338.002. The district is compliant with the appropriations limit since the estimated general tax revenue for 2022-23 is $1,900,850. The hearing to establish the district’s appropriation limit, based on information from the state Department of Finance, was held at the regular board meeting on July 12. Conducted the required annual review of director’s stipends. The board’s review resulted in maintaining the stipend amount of $400 per month, not to exceed $4,800 a year, which is pursuant to Public Utilities Code Section 16002(a). Authorized the general manager to initiate the process to create an administrative assistant position. The

general manager will bring to a future board meeting a union-approved job description and salary schedule for approval. Awarded the construction contract for the Auburn Lake Trails Paving Project to Sierra Asphalt. The district repaired 26 line breaks in 2021. Due to this work, the scouring of road base and the compromised integrity of paved surfaces were identified by the Auburn Lake Trails staff and reported to the district. This construction contract will complete this paving project in the amount of $114,665 with a 15% construction contingency. The next regular meeting of the board is Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. Agendas are posted on the district’s website gd-pud.org. He said the brothers also wouldn’t have given a statement to officers the night of Feb. 5 if they were planning revenge. On March 13 Chase and Cody arrived at the Pony Express Trail residence to help Ring and Jones move things out. Haley Redmond, the 18-year-old daughter of Jones came with Cody, who was her boyfriend. “I don’t think Cody Bomar would bring his soon-to-be fiancée, soon-to-be wife, to this residence if they were thinking about killing someone,” Cramer said. “You don’t bring more witnesses.” Jones told the court her blood was boiling as she saw Fortuin come up the driveway with Roesner. She said she directed her daughter to go sit in the front seat of Cody’s Lincoln Navigator and to lock herself in the vehicle. Roesner testified she and Fortuin were called there that morning to deliver a battery. “Jeremy is very, very violent and (Jones) has experienced that violence first hand,” Kramer said. Not only had she been “windmill punched” by Fortuin but she testified that in 2017 she witnessed him punch and knockout his then-girlfriend, a woman named Elisa, before dragging her unconscious body by her hair through the driveway. Ring yelled expletives at Fortuin and then the Bomars went after him in the driveway before the knife attack spilled out onto street, according to testimony. Fortuin then staggered to a broken-down truck. “They don’t break off the attack. They continue to hunt him down,” Perry said. “When he is hunched over that truck they made the decision to get on each side and stab him at least a dozen times in an execution-style fashion. This victim was not a saint. The people aren’t arguing he was. The law protects people equally whether they are a saint or a sinner.” Cramer argued the crime was “not even close” to first-degree murder, which implies intent and premeditation. “I think it’s more than reasonable to believe that (Fortuin) was going to hurt them again,” Cramer said. “Why would we think he wouldn’t act any different on March 13, 2018?” Chase and Cody Bomar will be sentenced Nov. 4.

Special to the Mountain Democrat piscopal Church of Our Saviour presents a fundraising folk concert featuring Darrell & the Darrell-Licks at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Come to the church and be prepared for an entertaining and fun afternoon. Refreshments will be served during intermission. Darrell Effinger, leader of the group, has a long history in the world of American folk music beginning in the ’6os. He was a member of the New Christy Minstrels and appears on the PBS Special “This Land Is Your Land.” He has performed with the Kingston Trio, Peter of Peter, Paul & Mary and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds; for several years he toured and performed with Glenn Yarbrough. Among Effinger’s many accomplishments is a song he wrote for Pete Seeger, “Ya Gotta Sing Out,” that he sang on National Public Radio. Effinger continues to entertain as a solo and as the leader of Darrell & The Darrell-Licks. The other two members of the group are Alan Klein and Bill Heilmann. Klein has been performing as a singer/songwriter/guitarist for many years, both as a soloist and with various bands, including as a founding member of Vintage Fare. His music is inspired by folk, country and soft rock, which he combines to reflect what he calls “boomer ballads.” Heilmann is a songwriter and singer and plays multiple instruments, including electric bass, acoustic guitar and banjo. Over the years he has performed as a soloist and with various bands and recently he was with the Irish and Scottish folk music band Celtic Grey. Placerville’s historical Church of Our Saviour opened in 1865. All ticket sales for this concert will be dedicated to the preservation of the church building thanks to the generosity of Darrell and the Darrell-Licks. The most important preservation project is the replacement of a deteriorated, leaky portion of the roofing. Admission is $15 per person with children 12 and younger free. Tahoe Art League seeks artists for mural projects Tahoe Daily Tribune The Tahoe Art League is looking for local artists or artist teams to design and create murals on walls in South Lake Tahoe. The murals will be primarily located in the newly established Arts Districts and will help to distinguish and revitalize this area. The theme is “Community Strength, Resilience and Heroes” to help celebrate the community emerging from a rather challenging last few years. The league is targeting several high-visibility walls along U.S. Highway 50 from Harrison Avenue to the “Y” in order to transform the area into a walkable outdoor gallery, support local artists, deepen community pride and promote year-around

diversified tourism. “We have a thriving local art community here in South Lake Tahoe,” states the league in a news release. “We want to promote, celebrate and share it.” The league is targeting four locations: • The large wall behind Blue Dog Pizza at the corner of Sierra Boulevard and U.S. 50 (800 square feet) • The back of Remax which is a segmented wall facing the Blue Dog Pizza parking lot at the corner of Sierra Boulevard and U.S. 50 (180 square feet) • The smaller east side of the Tahoe Art League gallery located at 3062 Lake Tahoe Blvd. next to the historical society (140 square feet) • The west and east facing walls of the old Verizon

and Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra caught Basie’s ear and soon he was playing with both and serving as second pianist and arranger for Moten. In 1935 Moten died and it was left to Basie to take some of the musicians from that orchestra and form his own, The Count Basie Orchestra. Some 86 years later, his orchestra continues to epitomize Kansas City Swing and the big band era. With the “April In Paris” recording in 1955, the orchestra began to set standards of musical achievement that have been emulated by every jazz orchestra since that time. Some of the greatest soloists, composers, arrangers and vocalists in jazz history — Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Sonny Payne, Freddie Green, Snooky Young, Frank Wess and Joe Williams — became international stars once they began working with The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra. Since Basie’s passing in 1984, others have led the orchestra forward such

as Jones, Foster, Grover Mitchell, Bill Hughes, Dennis Mackrel and, since September 2013, Scotty Barnhart maintains it as one of the elite performing organizations in jazz. Recent honors include the 2022 Grammy nomination for “Live at Birdland,” a 2019 Grammy nomination for “All About That Basie,” which features special guests Stevie Wonder, Jon Faddis and Take 6, among others, and the 2018 Downbeat Readers Poll Award as the No. 1 jazz orchestra in the world. This great 18-member orchestra is still continuing the excellent history started by Basie of stomping and shouting the blues, as well as refining those musical particulars that allow for the deepest and most moving of swing. Known as a diligent worker and beloved by Disneyland enthusiasts near and far, Martinez started his career at the park on Dec. 29, 1956, a year after opening. He started bussing tables then became a grill cook in Fantasyland quick-service locations that sold hamburgers, hot dogs and chili. Moving to Carnation Café in 1967, Martinez was a familiar face on Main Street, USA, where his breakfast potatoes recipe became quite famous. Martinez retired from Disneyland on September 27, 2017, after more than 60 years on the job.
