Smiles and “k-nuckles” here — Wally Richardson’s family demonstrates his classic greeting (and his sense of humor) following a memorial service Saturday.

Noel Stack Managing Editor

P

roving it’s possible to cry and smile at the same time, about 200 people gathered at Hills Church in El Dorado Hills Saturday to fondly remember local legend Wally Richardson, hearing heroic tales about his time in the Navy as well as about a hilariously won talent competition during which he wore wife Jenny’s bathing suit. Known for his words of wisdom (aka “Wallyisms”), infectious smile, enthusiastic wave and nonstop opti-

mism, Wally touched many during his time in the community, including the countless elementary and middle school students he greeted and gave “k-nuckles” (fist bumps) during his morning walks. His actions were so appreciated a plaque and bench were installed on Francisco Drive for him in 2018, gifted by Marina Village Middle School and the Lake Forest Owners Association. Wally died May 21 at 98 years old, leaving behind his wife of 64 years, four children, five grandchildren ■

EDH Fire donates reserve engine Noel Stack Managing Editor Call it the beginning of a beautiful friendship. El Dorado Hills Fire Department and Pioneer Fire Protection District staff met Thursday afternoon at Pioneer’s Mount Aukum station to share stories, shake hands and celebrate a new role for an older engine. EDH Fire donated a Type 1 wildland/urban engine to its southeastern neighbor. The engine had been used as a reserve engine in El Dorado Hills and now takes on that same role in Pioneer. “The timing couldn’t be better,” said Pioneer Fire Chief David Whitt, explaining that some of the district’s vehicles have of late been plagued with mechanical issues. EDH Fire bought the engine new in 2000, according to EDH Fire Chief Maurice Johnson, and has meticulously maintained

the apparatus to ensure its longevity. “It has bounced around, covering for engines that have been down,” he said. The district could have sold the engine for about $50,000, the chief estimated, but said EDH Fire would rather donate it to a neighbor in need. “The fact that we’re getting this engine with their board’s blessing and our board’s blessing is unbelievable,” noted Whitt, who credits the smooth process to the relationship he and Johnson have — the two have known each other a number of years as they both served in Sacramento region fire districts prior to making the move to El Dorado County. Pioneer Fire Protection District covers about 300 square miles of rural terrain with one engine, shared Capt. Scott Ramsey, and the district’s backup is in the shop. Motioning to ■

Sheriff’s warning: Open house thefts on the rise News release El Dorado County sheriff’s office officials say they have received numerous reports of thefts that occurred during open house events at homes listed for sale. The investigation is ongoing and no suspects have been identified. Sheriff’s officials noted in some incidents the suspects may have been operating as a team, utilizing one party to distract the real estate agent or homeowner while the other remains in the residence placing items in a large handbag. To help keep home sellers and their properties safe the Sheriff’s Office shared a few tips to follow when buyers come for a tour: • Store all your valuables somewhere safe and out of view. • Do not leave things like purses, wallets, phones, keys, bank statements, documents containing personal information or prescription medications in plain view or somewhere they would be accessed easily. • Safes and lock boxes should be locked or otherwise secured.

MARK FORNI CLASSIC

• Computers or other electronic devices should be turned off or passcode protected. • Try to avoid having any family photos or artwork visible that contains names and identities of family. • Talk to your realtor and request a limited number of guests being allowed inside at one time. • Leave the main entrance as the only point of entry and exit. This will ensure nobody is utilizing a back door or side gate as an exit. • Utilize security cameras to capture people coming and going or set up cameras inside the residence. Placing a sign on the front door that says, “cameras recording inside and outside the residence” will discourage thieves. • Take note of guests who use large handbags or tote-style purses. • When the showing is over, perform a walkthrough of the entire residence to check for missing items, left items or anything that seems out of place. Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of a theft during an open house should call EDSO dispatch at (530) 621-6600.

2022 Biz Walk results released

SERRANO 1-STORY 3 BED / 2 BATH 2 CAR GARAGE PRIME LOCATION Move-In Ready

Beautiful Move-In Ready Serrano 1-Story Walking Distance to Trails, Parks & Schools

News release The El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce recently published the results of the 2022 Biz Walk survey, which can be found on its website, eldoradohillschamber.org. The purpose of Biz Walk is to determine the status of the El Dorado Hills business community and learn firsthand how the chamber, civic leaders and county can retain, improve and attract businesses to the local area. The El Dorado Hills Chamber conducted a survey of the business climate in EDH business districts this past March. The survey results were overall encouraging, considering challenges with staffing and COVID-related restrictions. Noteworthy is that a strong majority of EDH business owners and managers polled indicated that business is better now than pre-COVID. The report is based primarily on these questions: • How’s business (are you profitable)? 69% responded that business is better today than pre-COVID, but 14% viewed their businesses as dismal post COVID. • What is the biggest deterrent in running your business? 50% indicated that deterrents were not a factor in running their business, but 20% maintain staffing as their largest issue since COVID. • Do you have a qualified workforce (can you find employees)? Although 20% responded to the above question as to having staffing issues, when asked about a qualified workforce, 60% relayed they had no issues while 35% shared hiring and staffing are more difficult. • Do you support going through the process for cityhood? Only 11% of business owners polled are in favor of El Dorado Hills becoming a city. A whopping 42% are uncertain and 29% had no comment. “This is my favorite program of our chamber and we are happy to continue this important effort with and for our local business community,” shared Debbie Manning, EDH chamber president and CEO.

After a few more words of appreciation, crews from both agencies teamed up to “push” the engine into its new home at PFPD Station 38. “This is great,” said Whitt with a beaming smile. EDH Fire, which is updating its fleet, has plans to donate another engine to the Amador Fire Protection District later this month.

and one great-grandson. Grandson Connor Lehner shared that he loved his grandfather’s “boyish and joyful energy, “adding that Wally could always make him smile, even on bad days. “You might have forgotten what he said but you never forgot how he made you feel,” added Wally’s nephew Greg Dollarhyde, who said he also appreciated his uncle’s sense of humor that started the day he was born. Wally was a “surprise” twin, arriving about 45 minutes after his sister Virginia was born much to the shock of his mother and hospital staff, Dollarhyde said. The jokes kept coming throughout Wally’s life as his humor grew. Dollarhyde shared one of the most humorous Wallyisms: “Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things.” Recounting Wally’s time in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War, friend and fellow veteran John Poimiroo called him a hero more super than anything Marvel Comics could create. Wally was named El Dorado County’s 2018 Veteran of the Year. Noting Wally’s determination and perseverance not only to become a pilot but also serve in combat, Poimiroo quoted a favorite Wallyism: “Nothing is impossible. Even the end of the word is ‘possible.’” Another Wallyism mentioned: “The sign of a beautiful person is they always see beauty in others.” Thousands saw beauty in Wally and now his family hopes each person he touched during his life will pass on that beauty to others.

who rode his motorcycle in from Roseville and has been coming since he was a kid. “It was a pretty run down bar and pool hall way back when,” he recalled. “But when these folks bought it, they turned it around into a really great restaurant. It’s a destination spot.” Although the bar and grill were established in 1955, Diana Anders, her partner Pat Evans and her daughter Amy Anders opened the restaurant portion in 1985. Mike and Denise bought the business in 2006 from Matt and Stephanie Luther of VMJ Restaurants Inc., who only owned it for a few years since purchasing it from Diana. Diana’s daughter Amy is the current owner of Green Valley Center, the property that houses The Purple Place. “We acquired the trademark right to ‘The Purple Place’ name under the express terms of the purchase agreement,” attested Denise, noting that she was friendly with Diana, who continued to frequent the restaurant until her death. “We obtained signatures from the landlord and original owner approving the transfer of the trade name and signage along with the escrow documents of the sale.” The day the sale was finalized, the couple began with 12 employees, including Ann White, who has worked at the restaurant for 29 years and still serves breakfast every morning. They have since grown the local landmark to more than 50 employees, enduring pandemic shutdowns. Despite setbacks, the restaurant is busier than ever. Denise credits Mike’s expertise for much of their lasting success. “My husband has been in the restaurant business his whole life,” she said, explaining that at 7 years old he was cracking eggs at the Cliff House which his family owned. Prior to buying The Purple Place, Mike ran institutions such as the Pasadena Ritz Carlton, Kimpton Group, Paragary Restaurant Group and a plethora of high end San Francisco eateries. Red’s BBQ in El Dorado with the Genovese brothers. While managing The Purple Place, Denise entrenched herself in the community. With three boys who grew up in El Dorado Hills, she is a former Lakeview Elementary PTA president and has donated to countless fundraisers. “For 15 years I have not said no to anyone,” she declared. The former biker bar is now famous for its family friendly sports bar, live music as well as good eats. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared from scratch with homemade sauces and salad dressings, not to mention scrumptious biscuits made in-house. Controversy surrounding the restaurant’s fate has become heated, though Denise asserts it was unanticipated. “We had intended to keep this a private matter between us and our landlord. Our desire is to execute a new lease with our landlord which will allow us to continue to operate at the present Purple Place location,” she explained.

“Unfortunately, negotiations with our landlord have been difficult and the terms she has proposed have not been reasonable,” Denise revealed. “We remain hopeful that we will be able to come to terms but, while negotiations continue, we decided it was prudent to remove The Purple Place neon sign and place it in storage for safekeeping. When we have a new lease in place, we will reinstall the sign.” Amy said she is also disappointed that negotiations are deadlocked. “I’m acutely aware that Denise and Mike would like to mischaracterize me and my motives but I’m not going to do the same for them,” she contended. “What you’re getting right now is a carefully crafted story that’s been hammered out and fed to the community for years. It has no reflection of the truth.” Amy told Village Life the couple has halted negotiations. “I do not want to take their business away from them and I certainly don’t want the community to lose a beloved, iconic landmark,”

she assured. “I gave them a proposal to extend their lease for 12 months while we continued negotiating terms and their response was to rip the sign off the building.” “I’d like them to stay and make amends, amends for significant past misdeeds,” Amy urged. “I’m cast as the villain in this; that this is purely motivated by greed and that’s not true. In fact, it’s just the opposite. “I’m really disappointed with my community,” she added. “I feel like it’s a Salem witch trial.” Amy is adamant that she does not want to open another business but floated a co-op idea. “If we fail to negotiate terms for a new lease, and if all else fails, I may try to start an employeeowned restaurant, fully owned by employees, with all of the revenue generated by that restaurant going to support the individuals who want to participate in it,” she suggested. Resolution remains uncertain as the Sept. 30 lease end date looms. “It’s so sad that we can’t seem to work it out with our landlord,” Denise said. “If Amy doesn’t want us here, she has every right to decide who stays and goes. So if she doesn’t provide us with a lease, we no longer can stay here. I’m devastated by this. We don’t want to move.” As for The Purple Place patrons, they are heartbroken at the prospect of its potential closure. “I hate to see it go,” said Dan Rodrigues, who dines regularly with friends who have been meeting there every Friday morning for more than a decade. “I hope they can work something out and stay.” “It’s been here forever,” said local elementary school teacher Tammy Baker, enjoying an al fresco meal with her son and sister. “We’ve been coming here for 30 or 40 years, literally our whole lives. The food is good, the service is good and it’s purple, my favorite color. Honestly, it’s sad to me with everything going on in the world that we need to argue over a name or a place or a business or whatever is going on.”

(maintenance-free Trex decking) looks out over the saltwater pool with soothing waterfalls and colored lighting to set the mood. The pool is surrounded by patio space perfect for lounging chairs and has child-proof fencing and a selflocking gate. Other backyard amenities include a hot tub underneath a pergola, putting green, firepit with built-in seating, gardeners greenhouse and a newer Tuff Shed. The front yard features decorative steps leading to a front patio, mature trees, a lawn, manicured shrubs and plenty of space for more plants and flowers — in-ground or potted. A wide driveway leads to the home’s attached, three car garage. For added convenience the current homeowners have installed an automatic Generac generator for backup power and replaced the garage doors. The home also has LeafGuard gutters. The property is located in Greenstone Country, a gated neighborhood with three private lakes, 12-plus miles of hiking and riding trails, community equine arena and clubhouse as well as lighted tennis and volleyball courts with a nearby play structure.
