Diamond Springs woman’s death deemed homicide A Diamond Springs home on Fowler Lane is surrounded by El Dorado County sheriff's investigators and crime scene tape Friday afternoon.

Mountain Democrat staff El Dorado County sheriff ’s investigators say a Diamond Springs woman’s “suspicious death” has been ruled a homicide. Law enforcement officers swarmed around a Fowler Lane home in Diamond Springs Friday afternoon as they searched for clues in the death of 63-yearold Jeanie Cilley. The next day sheriff ’s officials announced they had begun a homicide investigation. No arrests have been made in the case.

The Sheriff ’s Office declined to release any further details, including how the victim died or if Cilley resided at 4271 Fowler Lane, which was surrounded by crime scene tape Friday. Neighbors said they thought a UPS delivery driver may have alerted authorities and that two men had moved into the Fowler Lane house about one month ago. No further information was released by the Sheriff ’s Office as of press time as investigators continue to follow leads in identifying a suspect.

New Beginnings sent out a news release Monday afternoon in an effort to get the truck back, sharing security camera footage that shows it being driven off at about 5:01 a.m. The truck appears to turn right onto Missouri Flat Road from the shop. Until the vehicle is returned, organization leaders are asking for help in finding a truck that they can borrow to continue their work. “Towing junk vehicles with this new truck was a step closer for us to become self-supporting. Now we are really in a bind,” states the news release. n

A Monday afternoon blaze burned about one-half acre near the El Dorado Trail at Forni Road and Ray Lawyer Drive in Placerville. El Dorado County Fire Protection District firefighters jumped on the fire, knocking flames down as they spread into dense brush. The cause of the fire is under investigation. PG&E crews were called to the scene as some electrical lines were damaged.

Suspect lights up alley Mountain Democrat staff A Placerville homeless man reportedly used a liquid accelerant to start a fire in the alley beside the Cary House Hotel in downtown Placerville Monday night. Placerville police say a witness called the fire in at about 11:19 p.m. and provided Timothy a description of the suspect, who officers were able to locate at the Shell gas station just a couple blocks from the Cary House. Timothy Frizzle, 33, was arrested

on suspicion of starting the fire. While being booked into the jail in Placerville he reportedly spat on and made threats toward officers, adding to charges against him. Frizzle’s bail is set at $175,000. Video captured by surveillance camera shows the accelerant igniting across the alleyway and dissipating Frizzle after a few seconds. The blaze did not spread into surrounding vegetation or damage nearby buildings, according to Placerville Police Cmdr. Dan Maciel.

Tahoe Daily Tribune SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — A California legislator has named a Lake Tahoe organization as Nonprofit of the Year for 2021. Clean Up the Lake was recognized by Sen. Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) as part of the sixth California Nonprofit of the Year initiative. Each year California assemblymembers and senators are invited to honor a nonprofit in their district. Dahle, who represents the 1st Senate District that includes El Dorado County, chose Clean Up the Lake because of the group’s vision and plan. Clean Up the Lake recently embarked on a mission to clean up underwater trash from 72 miles of shoreline at Lake Tahoe. In just 12 miles of that cleanup more than 5,000 lbs of trash was reportedly pulled out of the lake. “Clean Up the Lake identified a problem and set out to fix it,” Dahle states in a news release. “It is such an inspirational effort by this organization and all the volunteers to ensure Lake Tahoe remains a national treasure.” Clean Up the Lake is deploying divers roughly three times per week, averaging 1 mile per day at depths up to 25 feet to remove trash. “We are honored to be recognized as Nonprofit of the Year and our extraordinary accomplishments are only made possible by our hard working teams of volunteers, dedicated staff, committed board members and supportive community,” said Clean Up the Lake Executive Director and

The Currys said they love this event because it is one of the only chances they get to play golf together with Steph and Seth playing in the NBA and Dell broadcasting games for the Charlotte Hornets. Eighteen minutes after the Currys teed off, more icons joined the fray as Justin Timberlake and Kansas City Chiefs megastars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce took aim at the pin. Timberlake mimicked throwing a football into the crowd before finishing 30th while Mahomes took 50th and Kelce 66th. The field was full of athletes, musicians and actors looking to have fun, like Ray Romano, Brain Baumgartner, Rob Riggle and Kevin Nealon. Nealon played a professional golfer in “Happy Gilmore”and finished with a score of -72 in the 3-day, 54-hole tournament. His brother Mike Nealon

was on his bag. Unfortunately for Nealon, the scoring isn’t like standard golf where the lower you score, the better. This tournament uses the modified Stableford scoring, which gives +5 for an eagle, +2 for a birdie, 0 for par, -1 for a bogey and -3 for a double bogey or worse. On hole 16 on the first day Romano took a score of -3 after hitting his ball from one side of the green to the other repeatedly, even finding himself in the sand trap before finally hitting the ball in. Former Vice President Dan Quayle finished close to par with a score of -2 to take 57th place. This was Del Negro’s 20th year in the tournament and his previous high was seventh. “It’s the Super Bowl of celebrity golf,” Del Negro said. The American Century Championship’s purse was $600,000. California budget favors left side in the crime culture war

alifornia’s new budget makes it clear that Gov. Trees EDITOR: recent letter talked of trees talking to each other and used that to argue against salvage logging. Salvage logging is the removal of dead or dying trees after a disaster like a fire. Unfortunately, preventing salvage logging simply makes the area that new trees are trying to regenerate in a fire trap. We need to get back to aggressive forest management, proper timber harvests and the letting of thinning contracts as well as salvage logging. Decades of abandoning the above have turned many of our forests into massive fire traps. Getting things back to where they should be will also take a long time. But long journeys start with a first step and we need to make it. Also, for those who grimace at the term timber

harvest, there is a reason that the U.S. Forest Service is under the Department of Agriculture and not Interior. GEORGE ALGER Placerville

Missteps EDITOR: ohn Garon wrote a letter titled “Alger’s fearmongering” in the June 23 edition of the Mountain Democrat. In it he stated that the Three Strikes law was a draconian and inhumane Nixon-era “three strikes law.” Sorry, Mr. Garon, here is a quote, easily verifiable on the web: “In 1994 California overwhelmingly passed Proposition 184, the initiative proposed to the voters had the title of Three Strikes and You’re Out. The law’s passage was triggered by the vicious murder of Polly Klaas in 1993. Klaas, who was 12 at the time, was snatched from her home, raped and strangled to death by Richard Allen Davis. Davis had a long and violent criminal record.” California voters passed this law, Mr. Garon, not some federal, Nixon-era garbage that you promote. What a load of hogwash! I say we err on the side of not letting criminals with long records out too early, instead of being “woke” and nice and letting them out before they have paid their debts to society for the heinous crimes they commit. Not once, not twice, but three times, Mr. Garon. Mr. Garon’s letter started out with “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” I believe he has proven his own point. If what they want is opportunity for every American, government policy should aim to encourage economic growth. Bigger, more intrusive government achieves the opposite. incomes and slower growth. Bush, the average percent of the U.S. economy that government was taking in those 50 years after World War II, when growth was averaging 3.5%, was around 20%. The average percent of the economy that government will take over the next 10 years, per Biden’s budget, is 24.5%. At least Biden’s economists are being honest to project anemic economic growth that will accompany this huge growth in government. One of the major spending initiatives in Biden’s plans is what they are calling the American Families Plan, with a price tag of $1.8 trillion. At a time when we have historic drops in our fertility rates and marriage rates, somehow the Biden administration thinks, contrary to experience, massive new government spending and entitlement programs

will be a boost to the American family. Hoover Institution’s John Cogan and Daniel Heil call this massive expansion of government entitlements “the largest expansion since Lyndon B. Allen was the emcee and A & A Music Events helped make the evening festive. The event included a special presentation by District 1 Supervisor John Hidahl, chairman of the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, who presented a proclamation to Olympic swimmer Bryce Mefford and New Orleans Saints draft-pick Ian Book. Both athletes are 2016 graduates of Oak Ridge High School. Book was able to attend the event with his parents and former coach. Mefford joined the event on Zoom between training times in Hawaii, with his parents and coaches attending in person. El Dorado County Federated Church calls new senior pastor News release After an exhaustive, two-year search during the height of a pandemic lockdown, the congregation of the El Dorado County Federated Church unanimously voted to welcome The Reverend Dr. Laura Barnes as its new senior pastor. Pastor Laura follows The Reverend Dr. Andrew Headden, who retired in October 2020. The Reverend Dr. Kim Nelson served as transitional pastor until the end of May. “Pastor Laura brings with her an energetic zeal for God and a wealth of experience in

church leadership, youth ministry, leadership of non-profit organizations and fundraising,” said Susan Hunn, chair of the pastor search team. “We think she’s a perfect fit with Federated’s values and priorities. ALSF announces its scholarship winners News release After reading and evaluating more than 60 applications from very worthy students in El Dorado County, the Assistance League Sierra Foothills Scholarship Committee chose Logan Barth, Sara Ambrose and Brianna Reynolds to receive this year’s Community Service and Advantage scholarships. Both Logan and Sara were able to attend the organization’s first in-person meeting in more than a year held June 30, giving members the opportunity to meet them and hear their inspiring stories. Although Brianna was unable to attend the meeting, the members also learned about her excellent achievements. Receiving Advantage Scholarships this year, given to students who have overcome challenges, are Sara and Brianna. Sara, a graduate of El Dorado High School, will major in biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, with the goal of having a career in the medical field. She was the yearbook editor, on the speech and debate team, played softball and maintained an excellent academic record. Sara is described by her teachers as being a “dream student,” saying she is reliable, resilient, inspiring, funny and kind. Her goal is to be an example to others that one’s circumstances do not have to limit one’s goals and achievements. Brianna is a graduate of Union Mine High School and plans to attend Humboldt California State University, with the goal of having a career that would enable her to aid injured animals. She excelled academically, participated in sports and volunteered

in programs for Hands4Hope, the Salvation Army and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Her teachers spoke of her ability to “transform obstacles into opportunities.” Logan, a recent graduate of Oak Ridge High School, is this year’s recipient of the Community Service Scholarship. This scholarship was created to recognize graduating seniors who have performed exemplary community service. Logan served in the Juvenile Justice program, first in the Teen Court program. When that program proved to be less than effective he was invited to develop and eventually to lead Peer Council. This program mentored teen offenders and was able to achieve an impressive success rate. He participated in Help Mito Kids, the Interact Club and the YMCA, all while maintaining an impressive academic record. He was praised by teachers for his professionalism, passion and empathy. They say, “He works incredibly hard for all the right reasons.” He is headed for a career in the legal field and plans to attend the University of Southern California. El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ed Manansala attended and spoke at the meeting. He congratulated the students on their impressive accomplishments, made even more challenging by the restrictions imposed by the COVID19 pandemic during their high school years. He also praised the members of Assistance League Sierra Foothills for their ability to pivot and be creative during the pandemic, enabling them to continue the many philanthropic programs offered to county residents.

Place in freezer or refrigerator until ready to cook. Day 6 1. Place a clean piece of metal the consistency of a coin (mom used a couple of quarters) and place in the center of the pot. The metal pieces will rattle with the boiling water. They will stop rattling if you run out of water. Worse thing to happen is to run out of water. Add enough water to the pot the depth of your thumb.

Barri and Manning presented a check from the chamber to the UC Davis Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center. The donation was accepted for UC Davis by Mark S. Allen, who is a longtime supporter of the institute and his son recently a patient. The program concluded with the silent auction, raising $4,175 for chamber programs, including the scholarship fund for local, graduating high schoolers. Donations included items autographed by Mefford and Book. Nearly $3,000 was raised from the chamber’s first virtual silent auction in March. “Celebrating accomplishments is especially important as we rebuild from the pandemic," Manning said. "Supporting our local businesses and organizations is vital to strengthening our regional economy, which is why we promote #KeepItLocal365.” The El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce is a not-forprofit organization, founded in 1986 to serve and advocate for the local business community.
