THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE
Trying to beat addiction Dear Annie: This is in response to the letter from “Outside the Bottle Looking In,” whose wife is an alcoholic. I will start by saying I am so tremendously sorry for the heartbreak you are experiencing, and I admire the unselfish love you have for your wife and your neverending desire to see her healthy. You mentioned that you hoped and prayed someone else will see themselves in your letter, and I felt compelled to inform you that I not only saw myself in your letter but also felt the pain that you, and my significant other, must experience on a daily basis at the hands of someone’s self-serving addiction. I know I will have to take multiple breaks to “cry it out” throughout this letter, but getting the pain out of my system is part of the process. As is true for most alcoholics, I grew up with an alcoholic father, who, at 74, is now drinking himself to death on a daily basis. As much as I would like to help him, I can barely keep my own boat afloat most days, so jumping into his boat right now would simply drown us both. I have quit drinking in the past, due to health issues as severe as pancreatitis, but for the past five years, I have managed to drink just under what it takes to noticeably hurt myself. Needless to say, the damage I am knowingly doing to my body is nothing short of irrational and unnecessary. Being a high-functioning alcoholic, I hold a full-time day job running a Christian school, where I get all the love I need from the kids, without judgment. They, however, deserve an adult in their lives who does not miss Mondays because Sunday was a bit too rough. My son is set to graduate from high school this year, and he deserves a mom who can masterfully plan his graduation party, attend commencement and not have to drink during the celebration because it might be a little too
stressful. And my significant other needs to know that while he’s busy caring for the family and tending to those things outside of the house that pay the bills, he need not worry that someone is home drinking the moment he leaves the house and taking advantage of his generosity and trust. In every situation, good and bad, people need to hear a message from someone else. Parents convey things to their children redundantly, but until the children hear it from the teacher, it doesn’t stick. Today, you are my “someone else.” Although I’ve only been sober for a month or so, since your letter was published in our local paper, it has been the greatest month of my life. Everyone finally got the REAL me back. That is the same amazing ME I’ve always been but spent years drowning in alcohol, so thank you for breathing life and hope back into my life. I hope God delivers the support your wife needs, just as you delivered the message I needed to help myself. God bless those who love and care for alcoholics, because until we choose to care for ourselves, we hurt so many. You are all priceless. — Finally Out of the Bottle Dear Finally Out of the Bottle: Thank you for sharing you letter and your beautiful story of courage and success. Alcoholics may be self-serving in their addiction, but the addiction itself is a disease. The choice for the sober alcoholic is whether to take that first drink. If he or she succumbs, all future drinks are manifestations of the disease. That’s why they say that for an alcoholic, “One drink is too many, a thousand not enough.” Millions of others share this disease, so you don’t
have to go on this journey alone. I hope you are going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for reinforcement, support and advice.
Parents lack boundaries Dear Annie: I have great neighbors who have two daughters, ages 15 and 16. The 16-yearold has a 20-year-old boyfriend, and the 15-year-old has a live-in boyfriend who is also 15. The fact that he lives there is OK with his parents and hers. I have walked by the room of the older girl more than once and seen her lying in bed with her boyfriend, under the covers, with the door half open. When this happens, I walk by and say hello, but I am uncomfortable as I do so. Her mother knows what they are doing. The younger girl sleeps with her boyfriend, and the mother is aware of that and says, “It is what it is.” The girl and her boyfriend are both failing in school, and their mothers are aware of this but have not taken any steps to put them on the right path. During the day, the two are left alone while the parents work. Meanwhile, the 16-year-old is doing terrific in school. The daughters both work — in fast food and retail. I have no children, but I would think this is wrong and is going to ruin their lives down the road. Their father goes along because, if he objects, the mother always takes the kids’ side. Both parents do not want drama, and giving in to the kids makes for no drama. I am just waiting to hear which one of them is going to get pregnant; the mother probably would be fine with that, but I do not think the father would be.
My wife and I are considered family and included at their family gatherings. Their relatives know what is going and defend it. They say that the girls are kids and nothing will happen. I reply, “If you think so,” and they answer that I am old-fashioned. Am I? — Am I Old-Fashioned? Dear Am I Old-Fashioned?: Having boundaries is essential for teenagers to develop maturity. These parents and relatives are acting like kids themselves. By any reasonable understanding, you are not old-fashioned. Your views reflect good parenting and common sense. ——— Dear Annie: This is about the letter from “Happy Nurse.” I’d like to share my story, which involved going back to school. I initially went for my nursing degree when I was a 36-year-old single mother of three daughters, having escaped an abusive relationship. I received my degree but then, three years later, lost it to addiction. I believe this was due to an unresolved sexual assault at the age of 7 and subsequent trauma. I wallowed in addiction (and selfpity, frankly) for a few years before getting clean in 2017. I am four years sober and have spent the last four years taking random drug tests, doing two years of DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) and one year of EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) trauma work. I will be 50 years old in September, and I have just finished my RN Refresher Course and been given my permit to practice as an RN in clinical settings! After clinicals, I will spend the first two years in a nursing position on a modified license — taking random drug tests and reporting to the Minnesota Health Professionals Services Program. I may be 52 when they fully restore my RN license, but to know that I have healed myself

and restored my mental health is the greatest gift. I would challenge anyone to see that it is NOT too late to realize your dream. For me, getting to be a registered nurse again is a testament to the work I have put in, not only into myself, but into the process of restoration and realization of my dream. Please tell your readers to not give up on themselves, their dreams or their future! — Nurse Dear Nurse: We can feel the excitement in your letter. Your pride in this major accomplishment, the first and second time around, is well deserved. ——— Dear Annie: Over the course of the pandemic, my husband and I have found ourselves drinking more. We used to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner most nights, that became a second glass with dinner, and a third glass after dinner. Neither of us gets noticeably drunk. We don’t drive anywhere. We don’t have hangovers the next day. But I do feel like it’s something I’ve come to look forward to each day. I am a little worried by that. Should I be? We do drink on weekends, and a bit more than we do on weeknights. Sometimes, we get tipsy then, but like I said, we are safe about it and don’t drive. I’m hesitant to give up our nightly ritual. What do you think? — Sipping Dear Sipping: If this was never a problem for you and your husband before the pandemic, then a respite might be enough to reset you back into healthy routines. But if you find your alcohol consumption creeping up again, you might want to quit drinking for good. Alcoholism is a progressive disease, and it’s far easier to nip problematic drinking in the bud today than it will be in one year, five years or 10 years. To ignore the issue just because things aren’t too bad right now would be akin to refusing treatment because you only have stage 1 cancer. Heed your intuition.
